Wow - looks like everyone is about to come out with their version of the TP2. The question for me now is - who to sign up with? What are the pros & cons of CDMA vs GSM versions? I've read about bad customer support with Sprint. Who's got the better (stable, coverage, speed) network? Any incentive to go unlocked?
Thank you!
I'll be getting one w/ tmobile usa because of the plan prices, great support, and GSM any where in the world!!
im going with Verizon,, im a sales man, and i need a reliable network.. if i dont get any signal i will lose clients. so im going with the best network in the US. you want the best you have to pay for it.

Personally I never lose reception in the U.S but I guess it all depends, so that is a good reason to go with Verizon, but I am gonna get it for T-mobile cause of an existing contract, otehr wise I think I would want to get it for [email protected]
If you want a weakened and crippled phone with horrible customer service then Verizon is definitly the way to go.
If you want a Touch Pro2 that works worldwide, that can be unlocked to any network, then go with AT&T or T-Mobile. Personally, I would go with AT&T as they have a larger 3G coverage throughout the US.

I tend to agree, I am an ex- verizon guy and had to deal with the slow phone deliveries, dumb down hardware issues(Thank God for XDA) as well as the CDMA not in use with the majority of the rest of the world.
If you need world wide connectivity and the best US 3G, Att is your best bet, but to be honest who deploys first tends to win. I guess the race is on.
Price, world-wide connectivity, un-crippled phone features, and customer support all point to Sprint as the best choice for someone about to choose a carrier for the first time and wanting the TP2.
The reports you've read about Sprint's CS are BS. I've been with them for 3 years and have had many opportunities to work with customer support and have walked away from the experience satisfied and better off every time. They clearly have been and continue to work hard to turn around a bad customer service department, and it's paying off.
Also, in all that time I've not had a single dropped call, save for one area between me and my office that is a "dead zone" that no carrier apparently covers (I car pool and we all use different carriers. We all drop at the same place).
I vote for Sprint. Better data network than ATT and T-Mo combined plus i read that Sprint's version is going to be dual mode (CDMA/GSM 900/1800?).
So you get good CDMA coverage in the States and when abroad, pop in a SIM and use a local GSM network. Works for me that way.
First of all, the Sprint and Verizon versions ARE global. They are CDMA and GSM. Get it straight people.
I have been with Verizon since before they were Verizon, and I have had absolutely ZERO issues with customer service, billing, phone replacement, coverage, dropped calls, etc. That is also having lived in 2 different regions of the country in that time.
I agree, they're sometimes slow to release phones, and hopefully the TP2 crippling isn't reminiscent of the TP1, but we'll have to wait and see. It all comes down to the best network in your area. In mine, Verizon is hands down the best, followed by AT&T second, a tin can with a string 3rd, and Sprint 4th.

Yes, Sprint is CDMA, and the Touch Pro2 for Sprint and Verizon will be dual mode (CDMA/GSM).
im an existing tmo customer (very happy with their service) and am craving to get tp2, but willing to switch to at&t since my contract with tmo has expired and i might get a better price at at&t as a new customer
sprint .. eh .. not sure, maybe
would be great if someone could do an in depth side-by-side comparison of these companies, like prices, features, extras ..
for example, i found out that at at&t and sprint you get to listen to pandora for free, but not on tmo, also engadget figured that at&t has better 3G than others, stuff like that
in general, question stands - tmo, att or sprint?
well, the CDMA phones cannot use voice and Data at the same time. so that's a big deal.
coverage and network speed vary largely depending on area. and nobody knows what the phone will cost yet through any of the carriers.
good, something new, kinda rules out sprint

tmo hands down.... check billshrink.com to compare all four carriers (its not endorsed by any carriers by the way)
Hope this isn't a thread hijack.. what's the scoop on ROM support for CDMA versions of HTC phones? (I see the posts about TP2 being CDMA+GSM)
I've been here flashing ROMs for 8125/8525/8925, but always had a GSM version... and have really NOT noticed ROMs for the CDMA flavors of those phones..
Sprint appears to offer me the best price for a family plan with 2 data phones + messaging (~$130 vs. $170/month if I've got my info correctly), so I'm thinking heavily about dropping ATT after ~8 years... but wanted to be sure I wouldn't lose access to all the fantastic ROMs from XDA.

Any news on release dates for the different carriers?
Finally
Check this: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009...ss-touch-pro2-to-land-september-11th-for-199/
Finally..verizon tp2 is not crippled
Engadget has a leaked internal memo confirming this as well.
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/09/04/htc-touch-pro2-graces-verizon-on-september-11/
This brings me back to the question, does anyone know if it will at all be possible to unlock this for use on US AT&T 3G?
So it will be $489.99 without contract right??

According to that leaked memo, yeah.
Anyone know if its possible to unlock for US AT&T 3G? I'd pay $500 in a heartbeat for no contract, an actual number row, green (I'm a green whore), for once not crippled by Verizon version...
nothing personally to any of you, but I've had Verizon, and i'd rather have a a GSM network that I can swap Sim's on, and switch phones when I like.
The Cdma network, has great coverage and clarity, but I'd rather have the freedom of what phone do I want today

Is there a phone better than the tp2? No then there is no need to swap!
I'm surprised more people haven't responded to this. As a long time Verizon customer, this announcement MADE MY DAY!
I called the Verizon 800-number and was told that it is indeed releasing on the 11th... can't wait! I'm going to use my NE2 $50 off and hopefully get some kind of retention discount since I'm out of contract... $149 after rebate minus whatever I can finangle , will be a nice upgrade from my XV6800/HTC Titan.
Does anyone think they will allow for preorders or will it be a grab for it on the day it launches?
Yep - the VZN TP2 is very much on my radar. I have been very happy with my current Moto A4500 (Q9 Napoleon) running WM 6.1 Standard, but looking forward to a touch screen interface. Actually, one of the nice things about VZN is that I can toggle between devices via the dial up "device programming app:" *228 option 3.

CDMA Touch Pro 2 also has SIM slot and should work on GSM networks so you can swap whatever SIM card you want in the CDMA TP2.

I don't think it'll work on domestic GSM networks though, just overseas. I have an Ozone with Verizon and it came with a Verizon/Vodaphone SIM installed, but when I try to access AT&T's network here it can't.
Edit-According to Phonescoop, it's not approved by the FCC to access domestic GSM, even though it can do 1900 and 850. I imagine the same will be true of the TP2.
I was told that the phone would be available for online ordering only on Sept 11th. I was so disappointed as I was planning to open up at the store to get the 1st one!
Has anyone else heard this?

I don't know about CDMA phones but, there are plenty of GSM phones better ACER m900, acer DX900, etc...
and Its not even a matter of being better, sometimes, when I go to work and I know its gonna be a hands on day, I don't want the phone banging around, I'll switch to a older motorla

I think this is the current list of nations with CDMA networks:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_CDMA2000_networks
I would recommend that you simply buy a phone from a local mobile company. CDMA phones are harder to get working on other systems than GSM phones.
You have to find out what networks you have where you live. American CDMA is pretty much only a North American signal. The Evo is built to run on the Sprint network which is CDMA.
Most European countries (I know you are not in European country) run on a GSM network. Two of USA's bigger companies run GSM phones...AT&T and T-Mobile. Phones from both those companies will run in Europe...but not at 3G. But they will work.
My new Evo will not work in Europe...so next time I travel I will need to consider this.
Not sure if that helps. What network does your phone company use? Then get a phone that will work on that network. Evo is only CDMA so pretty much only a North American phone.
thank you very much for your answer, i hope to get a wonderful phone soon, and thank you again
Mine roamed on both data and voice when I was in Cabo San Lucas last week...

I live in Asia and yes, as long as you have compatible CDMA networks it will work, even the EVDO works!! You'll just need to ask your CDMA provider to inject a CDMA number or you can unlock it yourself using CDMA works (a bit risky thou)
Find out what frequencies the country you are trying to use it in run on their CDMA networks, Sprint runs on 1900MHz, the EVO roams on Verizon's 800MHz band. 800MHz is only for voice, 1900MHz runs both voice and data. So if you are in a country with a 800MHz CDMA network it will work, but only for voice/texts. WiMax runs on 2.5GHz, no one else uses that band for WiMax.
Get a unlocked nexus one it will save u the cdma trouble

Even if it works, and you try and experiment with it only, you might get a few thousand dollar phone bill. Be very careful.
It has happened with many people with iPhone.

Yep, the N1 has nearly the same specs, and is available in both an AT&T flavor and T-Mobile flavor of GSM. Find out what you need in your area (I expect it will be the T-Mobile phone) and go for that instead.
The N1 has a 5MP camera instead of 8MP, but the picture quality is often just as good (higher MP just means you can blow it up or crop more) and the screen is a 3.7" instead of 4.3". However both run basically the same hardware inside, and the N1 has a more mature modding community.

While Europe is a big place, the voice & wireless data portions of the Sprint Evo will not work in England, Ireland, Spain, France, Portugal, or Germany. Just like 95% percent of all Sprint phones.

Uhm...a flat contradiction adds nothing to the conversation. More data if you have it. The non-compatibility with Ireland/Europe/etc was a huge deal to me. One I had to just swallow and accept that if I want the phone I'd have to deal with travel at that time.
I spent weeks researching and was even told by Sprint store that no go on the Evo.
CNET: "Alternatively, if your relative is a Sprint or a Verizon customer, he or she can rent GSM phones from the carrier for the length of the trip:
HTC: "Networks CDMA 800/1900 MHz EVDO Rev. A, WiMAX 2. 5 to 2.7GHz; 802.16e"
Don't be an azz and throw out a denial with no information. Even HTC shows this phone has NO GSM.

Is it an extra charge to use phone there..?
Traveling to China next week and I know CDMA networks are scarce outside of America. Is there any small chance that Ill be able to roam on some Chinese CDMA network for no extra cost? Im betting not but wanted to ask around anyway.
I think free roaming only applies on the US, PR and USVI. I would recommend getting a cheap GSM phone with their frequencies and get a prepaid SIM while over there.
The world will end.
In all seriousness, it depends on if China has a CDMA network setup that has roaming agreements with Sprint, which would result in international overage fees. Or you could just use google voice over a laptop.
Ancient Chinese secret .... LOL
But really i think they would charge the $#!T out of you....
really wish google voice's voip calls worked in android browser
Check out roamsimple.com and get yourself an unlocked quad band GSM phone. Was a great solution for traveling through about a dozen countries in Europe. Not sure on their coverage in China but they seemed like a reputable company to work with.
Once you leave the states CDMA is just about worthless in 90% of the world.
Agreed with insanity. When I was there you could get a sim for your gsm phone or look at the full bars on your phone and get pissed it wouldn't make calls I did the latter. Had alltel razr and had full signal the entire time I was there, but when I called it would never go through. I think that's why they make global phones
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Use skype in connection with wifi to make calls? Could be a cost affective way to be able to make calls over there.
There is a guy in my college who wants to sell his gs3. It is currently hot-lined. As in he still is in contract but the service has been shut off for non payment until payment is made.
So would it be possible to get this phone on another account in its as is state? He will not call in and cancel because he will not pay termination fees.
If I can't, how long does Sprint take to free the ESN from his account from non nonpayment by default?
Or do they automatically block that ESN forever until the bill is paid?
I'm pretty sure you cannot activate a phone that is active on another account that is past due. You'd have to call sprint to get more info on it though.
The esn is blocked for roughly 90 days. After that, it can be activated on another account. I have had personal experience with the same thing involving an Evo LTE.

There is gsm. The iPhone 5 for sprint is gsm and takes Sim. Without the Sim it picks up no signal at all. I am aware that sprint is CDMA. But their new LTE devices take Sim cards.
That's really irrelevant, the galaxy s3 on Sprint does not have a sim card.

you should really do your research before you talk. the iphone for sprint is a CDMA device. it is a world phone which means it also can do gsm. but as the old touch pro which was also a world phone. the gsm side is locked to the carrier issuing the device. while back then you could hack and unlock the gsm side to work with any slip in sim. it is now illegal in the united states. google it. sprint is not and never will be gsm. bottom line. you can use their sim side over seas to pony off of gsm networks. but your bill in the end comes a cdma carrier who has a agreement with a gsm provider to provide you service.
proof is in the pudding
http://www.everymac.com/systems/app...ne-5-a1429-cdma-lte-sprint-verizon-specs.html
now all this is irrelevant to the question you asked. so the answer remains no.
