I think this is the current list of nations with CDMA networks:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_CDMA2000_networks
I would recommend that you simply buy a phone from a local mobile company. CDMA phones are harder to get working on other systems than GSM phones.
You have to find out what networks you have where you live. American CDMA is pretty much only a North American signal. The Evo is built to run on the Sprint network which is CDMA.
Most European countries (I know you are not in European country) run on a GSM network. Two of USA's bigger companies run GSM phones...AT&T and T-Mobile. Phones from both those companies will run in Europe...but not at 3G. But they will work.
My new Evo will not work in Europe...so next time I travel I will need to consider this.
Not sure if that helps. What network does your phone company use? Then get a phone that will work on that network. Evo is only CDMA so pretty much only a North American phone.
thank you very much for your answer, i hope to get a wonderful phone soon, and thank you again
Mine roamed on both data and voice when I was in Cabo San Lucas last week...

I live in Asia and yes, as long as you have compatible CDMA networks it will work, even the EVDO works!! You'll just need to ask your CDMA provider to inject a CDMA number or you can unlock it yourself using CDMA works (a bit risky thou)
Find out what frequencies the country you are trying to use it in run on their CDMA networks, Sprint runs on 1900MHz, the EVO roams on Verizon's 800MHz band. 800MHz is only for voice, 1900MHz runs both voice and data. So if you are in a country with a 800MHz CDMA network it will work, but only for voice/texts. WiMax runs on 2.5GHz, no one else uses that band for WiMax.
Get a unlocked nexus one it will save u the cdma trouble

Even if it works, and you try and experiment with it only, you might get a few thousand dollar phone bill. Be very careful.
It has happened with many people with iPhone.

Yep, the N1 has nearly the same specs, and is available in both an AT&T flavor and T-Mobile flavor of GSM. Find out what you need in your area (I expect it will be the T-Mobile phone) and go for that instead.
The N1 has a 5MP camera instead of 8MP, but the picture quality is often just as good (higher MP just means you can blow it up or crop more) and the screen is a 3.7" instead of 4.3". However both run basically the same hardware inside, and the N1 has a more mature modding community.

While Europe is a big place, the voice & wireless data portions of the Sprint Evo will not work in England, Ireland, Spain, France, Portugal, or Germany. Just like 95% percent of all Sprint phones.

Uhm...a flat contradiction adds nothing to the conversation. More data if you have it. The non-compatibility with Ireland/Europe/etc was a huge deal to me. One I had to just swallow and accept that if I want the phone I'd have to deal with travel at that time.
I spent weeks researching and was even told by Sprint store that no go on the Evo.
CNET: "Alternatively, if your relative is a Sprint or a Verizon customer, he or she can rent GSM phones from the carrier for the length of the trip:
HTC: "Networks CDMA 800/1900 MHz EVDO Rev. A, WiMAX 2. 5 to 2.7GHz; 802.16e"
Don't be an azz and throw out a denial with no information. Even HTC shows this phone has NO GSM.

any idea if i change my radio version on TP2 by installing AT&T or T-Mobile it could works the 3G on it?? i have TP2 EURO Version witch is runing on Edge Speed Network.
Its highly unlikely. The only reason i'm not gonna say a definitive no is because of the rumored world tp2. Now if its anything like the last like 3-4 HTC phones the antenna for the USA 3G bands is not installed in the device so u can do all the software u want but it won't change the fact that u won't get 3G
not gonna work, there's nothing u can do. This has been addressed many times, just search.
to bad as a good phone like tp2 does not support North American 3G
maybe i should sell it because this phone one of the best in market for now and the made it in very hight quality brand but no 3G it means no internet on it 2 bad.
NorthAmerican 3G Network on TP2 ?? ¡¡¡Wait!!!

Yeah, there is not much of a difference if you use EDGE or 3G on the phone itself. I do everything on EDGE, and i'm quite happy. The peak i got here is 20kb/s and is fast enough for my everyday needs. I can even stream youtube normally, just like my PC.
The big difference here is when you tether. On everything else, EDGE is fine.
I live in a 3G area and just switched from my xperia to the touch pro 2 and there is a huge difference depending on what browser u use. And youtube loads very slow on edge at least for me it does. 3G was much faster!
Based upon my experience with the Touch HD T8282 in the US I wouldn't recommend anyone here buy the Rhodium 100 with European 3G. I'd suggest waiting for the Rhodium 300 with the UMTS850.
EDGE Sucks, forget any streaming....period.
^agree, usa 3G is a must have for speedy internet, streaming, etc.

seriously, stop posting your sob story in any thread you find.
it's no one's fault but yours that you bought the European version that doesn't run 3G in the US. if you had done your research instead of relying only on whatever online store you purchased it from, you would have known that the Rhodium 100 doesn't have the necessary bands to support 3G here.
all that info is in this forum, all you had to do was look. so stop blaming the online merchant for not being "upfront" with you, because no one here will care. it's your fault for not researching the phone further than "ooohhhh the screen tilts and it's a 3.6 inch WVGA resolution and it has dual speakers and blah blah blah" learn from this mistake so you won't waste your money and posting space on the forum.
BGR seems to think so. I'm SO getting one if it's true.

oh no! what if I buy an att desire for t-mobile, will I get 3g?
Oh please Heavenly Lord don't give such a beast to such a undeserving network! Let them stick with the iphone.
And to the above you will get 2G only!!!
Down with AT&T!!!!
This phone should come to T-Mobile since they need an exclusive phone (the nexus one doesn't count because of that lame arse plan you have to get) that is really good.
Stick with your iPhone AT&T. You need the fanboys going over to you and let the "real" carriers get the Android phones.
I thought Tmobile was getting this phone??
I don't see why everone is dogging AT&T? ya i'm not in love with the carrier or iphone. In fact i'm one the biggest iphone haters alive, but AT&T is the only service where I get 3g and it is FAST. T-MOBILE gets edge at best on the nations 3rd largest carrier. I know AT&T doesn't get good service in some big cities but the best option for me and my area within a 250 mile rdaius. You should be excited att id getting an droid phone, but of course att will some how screw with android with some yahoo android apps or something.
Desire!
This is most likely my next device. I am so glad to see that AT&T saw fit to get a real HTC with great specs. I have been anxiously awaiting which HTC device was coming my way. There is no way I was going to settle for the Backflip! They may also be getting the Sony Ericcson X10 which is also a nice device, but in my opinion nothing compared to the Desire. The confirmed Dell mini 3 is not even a consideration, but the mini 5 would definately have my attention. Cant wait to hear a release date, I know what I'm getting myself for my Bday in May if the release date works out.

Your carrier fanboyism aside, I don't want an iphone. I can't switch to T-mobile. Know why? Because there's no T-mobile 3G where I live.
Millions of americans are in the same predicament, and choices are usually limited 1 or 2 carriers. For east Orlando, that means VZW or AT&T. Hence, despite T-mobile's awesome prices and great phones (I wanted an N1, HD2 and an N900, guess whose network they only work with?), there's an important reason why they're still #4- they keep avoiding us. So piss off...
That said, I want an N1 or Desire... hurry up AT&T!!!

Will the desire with its current specification run on at&t 3G network? I noticed the 850 band is only labeled GSM, while the 900/2100 is labeled HSDPA.

No. Need to wait for a US version otherwise the best you'll get is edge.
Lol, I have AT&T and I'll stay with them only if I can't get this phone with Verizon.
Problem is, AT&T drops lots of my calls, somewhere in the neighborhood of 5% around town and as high as 20% where I live. They seem fine other wise. When i'm traveling to other areas, life is good with them. Their devices work internationally and I can talk and surf at the same time. When I'm near my home which isn't a rural area at all, drop drop drop.

Or find some way to get an unlocked one from Telstra Austrailia, they'll be rolling out the Desire next month. They run an 850Mhz 3G network and as with their 850Mhz Touch HD, their 850Mhz Desire should work on AT&T as well.
Hi, I bought my awesome, gorgeous, magnificent, incredible Desire in Poland, it is sim free. Next week I am flying to NY and then going by car to Miami and then to the Bahamas.
I tried to google some info about US carriers' frequencies but had no luck, on different forums I found contradictory info. Maybe some of you have answers for me...
I know my Desire GSM services will work in the USA, but how about data? 3G, HSPA, EDGE? If yes, which carriers should I choose for best coverage?
Thank you, I'll go back to licking my device now.
EDGE is GSM based so you will get it with any US GSM carrier and as far as 3G and HSPA it will only work with T Mobile.

There are no Desires that currently work on US T-Mobile. An A8183 from Australia will work on AT&T, but if you bought your device in Poland it is almost certainly an A8181.
Regards,
Dave
Contradictory info again... Yes it is A8181, so only GSM and EDGE? Can anyone confirm that for sure?
How fast is EDGE?
Are there any prepaid sim cards in the US with unlimited data?
EDGE isn't quick - the maximum speed is around 380kbps, and that is theoretical. Actual rates will be much lower - in the region of 80 to 120 kbps.
I'm not aware of any decent prepaid deals with data, though I've been keeping my eye on this company, which offer a no-contract solution that looks reasonable. Since they are using GSM phones, they must be using either AT&Ts or TMO's network.
Regards,
Dave

But not all was lost. I often find myself within free WIFI coverage.

I could be wrong, but I don't know of a CDMA carrier in the UK. Without a CDMA carrier, you wouldn't be able to use the Incredible as a phone (WiFi would still work, as well as running other apps in Airplane mode). Whether you're rooted or not would be irrelevant, as the radio in the phone is what would be limiting you.
No sorry the incredible is only supported in the U.S. right now. Their is no Rom or hack that can fix this. This is a Verizon exclusive that only works in the U.S. it has to do with the network types. I would consider getting the HTC desire. If you were to buy the incredible their would be no way for you to get a wireless signal because Europe doesent support cdma technology. So the only way for you to use it would be if you were in the U.S.
Their is also no way you can hack the phone to run on a gsm network they use in Europe. Sorry. U should consider the HTC desire HD that should be out on European networks before the end of this year!!!!!

Does this also mean that an US user with Incredible will not be able to use the phone whilst roaming in UK or any other countries without CDMA?

The phone is CDMA only. Doesn't support GSM which is almost exclusive in Europe.
everything but phone
So you could use the Incredible in the UK(less phone) and GPS, wi-fi, etc will work? Seeing how I'm going on vacation it will be a PLUS that the phone does not work.... Has anybody used the phones other features..say in London?

GPS (non-tower based at least) SHOULD work worldwide. Wi-fi is a toss up since UK uses different frequencies than the US. This is really why I'm hoping LTE will be adopted worldwide. The only thing that stands in it's way is WiMAX, but my hopes are LTE will become incredibly popular, and it's apparently easy enough to change WiMAX towers into LTE, so maybe Sprint/Clearwater could be forced into dumping WiMAX.
It's just time for a global standard (which for most of the world GSM is, but GSM has enough problems of it's own that we need new tech, and hopefully LTE will be it).

As long as its with another carrier and not Sprint. Also as stated above, you will have little to no luck with an overseas company running on a CDMA network as the U.S. is the only main place where that is used. The rest of the world mainly runs on GSM networks, so unless you are lucky and can find a carrier that runs on a CDMA network overseas, then your looking at either using that phone as "wifi only" with no service, or roaming off some towers (again if ur lucky) with some hefty costs. It would be best to look for a GSM phone IMO if ur planning to use it I another country
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Some newer phones I believe are being made with sim card slots so that they can be used with cdma and GSM but those would be higher end phones. Even still you would have to unlock said phone then start service with the carrier of choice and hope that they don't have a ban on world phones. I had a blackberry storm on T-Mobile like that and they banned my phone the day after I sold it to some poor kid and bought my evo lol.
