I have heard somewhere someone said this phone doesn't work in the UK, is this true?
Would root and custom ROM fix this?
Many thanks,

I could be wrong, but I don't know of a CDMA carrier in the UK. Without a CDMA carrier, you wouldn't be able to use the Incredible as a phone (WiFi would still work, as well as running other apps in Airplane mode). Whether you're rooted or not would be irrelevant, as the radio in the phone is what would be limiting you.
No sorry the incredible is only supported in the U.S. right now. Their is no Rom or hack that can fix this. This is a Verizon exclusive that only works in the U.S. it has to do with the network types. I would consider getting the HTC desire. If you were to buy the incredible their would be no way for you to get a wireless signal because Europe doesent support cdma technology. So the only way for you to use it would be if you were in the U.S.
Their is also no way you can hack the phone to run on a gsm network they use in Europe. Sorry. U should consider the HTC desire HD that should be out on European networks before the end of this year!!!!!

Does this also mean that an US user with Incredible will not be able to use the phone whilst roaming in UK or any other countries without CDMA?
If this is true... LOL...
The phone is CDMA only. Doesn't support GSM which is almost exclusive in Europe.
everything but phone
So you could use the Incredible in the UK(less phone) and GPS, wi-fi, etc will work? Seeing how I'm going on vacation it will be a PLUS that the phone does not work.... Has anybody used the phones other features..say in London?

Don't LOL us! There aren't many countries outside of Western Europe that support only GSM technologies! Still, it would be nice if there were more phones from Verizon that supported CDMA and GSM, phones that weren't Blackberry Storms and other non-android doorstops

GPS (non-tower based at least) SHOULD work worldwide. Wi-fi is a toss up since UK uses different frequencies than the US. This is really why I'm hoping LTE will be adopted worldwide. The only thing that stands in it's way is WiMAX, but my hopes are LTE will become incredibly popular, and it's apparently easy enough to change WiMAX towers into LTE, so maybe Sprint/Clearwater could be forced into dumping WiMAX.
It's just time for a global standard (which for most of the world GSM is, but GSM has enough problems of it's own that we need new tech, and hopefully LTE will be it).

Hi, I bought my awesome, gorgeous, magnificent, incredible Desire in Poland, it is sim free. Next week I am flying to NY and then going by car to Miami and then to the Bahamas.
I tried to google some info about US carriers' frequencies but had no luck, on different forums I found contradictory info. Maybe some of you have answers for me...
I know my Desire GSM services will work in the USA, but how about data? 3G, HSPA, EDGE? If yes, which carriers should I choose for best coverage?
Thank you, I'll go back to licking my device now.
EDGE is GSM based so you will get it with any US GSM carrier and as far as 3G and HSPA it will only work with T Mobile.

There are no Desires that currently work on US T-Mobile. An A8183 from Australia will work on AT&T, but if you bought your device in Poland it is almost certainly an A8181.
Regards,
Dave
Contradictory info again... Yes it is A8181, so only GSM and EDGE? Can anyone confirm that for sure?
How fast is EDGE?
Are there any prepaid sim cards in the US with unlimited data?
EDGE isn't quick - the maximum speed is around 380kbps, and that is theoretical. Actual rates will be much lower - in the region of 80 to 120 kbps.
I'm not aware of any decent prepaid deals with data, though I've been keeping my eye on this company, which offer a no-contract solution that looks reasonable. Since they are using GSM phones, they must be using either AT&Ts or TMO's network.
Regards,
Dave

Let me get this straight, you're talking about 3G and HSPA data here? I will be able to make calls and use EDGE with any carrier right?
How about Verizon? I believe they use some different type of network.

Yes, Verizon and Sprint are CDMA networks, not GSM. Your phone will never work with either of these.

Thank you very much Dave.
At least I will have EDGE... should be enough to get emails and browse mobile www.
Can anyone recommend a carrier for a one-month trip from NY to Miami? Which will have the most reliable network coverage?

I recently had a trip to the US and was also looking for some sort of prepaid plan that includes data that would work with my European HTC Desire. No luck.
But not all was lost. I often find myself within free WIFI coverage.
Tip: It's a vacation. Don't spend much of it pecking away at your smartphone. Enjoy your trip!

I think this is the current list of nations with CDMA networks:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_CDMA2000_networks
I would recommend that you simply buy a phone from a local mobile company. CDMA phones are harder to get working on other systems than GSM phones.
You have to find out what networks you have where you live. American CDMA is pretty much only a North American signal. The Evo is built to run on the Sprint network which is CDMA.
Most European countries (I know you are not in European country) run on a GSM network. Two of USA's bigger companies run GSM phones...AT&T and T-Mobile. Phones from both those companies will run in Europe...but not at 3G. But they will work.
My new Evo will not work in Europe...so next time I travel I will need to consider this.
Not sure if that helps. What network does your phone company use? Then get a phone that will work on that network. Evo is only CDMA so pretty much only a North American phone.
thank you very much for your answer, i hope to get a wonderful phone soon, and thank you again

I live in Asia and yes, as long as you have compatible CDMA networks it will work, even the EVDO works!! You'll just need to ask your CDMA provider to inject a CDMA number or you can unlock it yourself using CDMA works (a bit risky thou)
Find out what frequencies the country you are trying to use it in run on their CDMA networks, Sprint runs on 1900MHz, the EVO roams on Verizon's 800MHz band. 800MHz is only for voice, 1900MHz runs both voice and data. So if you are in a country with a 800MHz CDMA network it will work, but only for voice/texts. WiMax runs on 2.5GHz, no one else uses that band for WiMax.
Get a unlocked nexus one it will save u the cdma trouble

Even if it works, and you try and experiment with it only, you might get a few thousand dollar phone bill. Be very careful.

Yep, the N1 has nearly the same specs, and is available in both an AT&T flavor and T-Mobile flavor of GSM. Find out what you need in your area (I expect it will be the T-Mobile phone) and go for that instead.
The N1 has a 5MP camera instead of 8MP, but the picture quality is often just as good (higher MP just means you can blow it up or crop more) and the screen is a 3.7" instead of 4.3". However both run basically the same hardware inside, and the N1 has a more mature modding community.

Uhm...a flat contradiction adds nothing to the conversation. More data if you have it. The non-compatibility with Ireland/Europe/etc was a huge deal to me. One I had to just swallow and accept that if I want the phone I'd have to deal with travel at that time.
I spent weeks researching and was even told by Sprint store that no go on the Evo.
CNET: "Alternatively, if your relative is a Sprint or a Verizon customer, he or she can rent GSM phones from the carrier for the length of the trip:
HTC: "Networks CDMA 800/1900 MHz EVDO Rev. A, WiMAX 2. 5 to 2.7GHz; 802.16e"
Don't be an azz and throw out a denial with no information. Even HTC shows this phone has NO GSM.

Is it an extra charge to use phone there..?
So, I'm currently in a debate with a friend over the announcement of the LTE on Verizon. My friend (who works in multiplexing telecommunications) tells me that all current Verizon phones will receive a firmware update in order to move onto the LTE network since the current EVDO RevA communication is similar to that of LTE.
I completely disagree and state that the current radio functions on all phones including the droid incredible cannot handle communication with the LTE standard and will require a different chip in order to properly access LTE network.
Does anyone have any documents or citing that says current 3G phones are not forward compatible with LTE?
Thanks.
It would take David Copperfield to make LTE work on our devices
You might want to convince your friend to place a large bet on this with you because there is virtually no way that I know of that he will win the bet. Your friend has lost his marbles...

I agree, place a very large bet on this. You are absolutely correct. I work for Vzw, if I didn't run the risk of getting fired for screenshotting some of the documentation we have about 4G, I'd attach it. 4G devices will be backward compatible with 3G networking, not vice versa.
something but what
LTE no, but voice&data at once maybe?
I was on the phone with VZW activating a new device last week and the rep on the phone was trying to tell me that certain devices will end up getting an update that allows for data communications and voice communications simultaneously. Which is currently not possible. I tried to tell them that this sounded like it was not possible and that only new devices with new hardware will be able to do such things. They remained firm that certain current devices would get an update to allow this. I just don't see it happening. Time will tell.

I dont see why they can't...I can talk and text at the same time on 1X rofl!
I have read for a while and I have found nothing that will make me 100% sure for what I need.
I'm interested in buying this phone as it's similar to the Sprint Evo Shift but will work with the new GSM network my carrier has with HSPA+ (at least for 7.2mbps as far as I've read).
So, I know the DZ will work as my carrier uses 850/1900 for HSPA, but I've seen that people with AT&T in the US buy the DZ (not the G2 as T-Mobile uses other frequencies).
My question is, what's finally the difference between both phones? Is there a hardware difference that makes them operate on different frequencies or is it only related to the flashed radio?
It's confusing to me as many people in the forum assure in other threads that the phones are exactly the same, but if people with AT&T spend more for the canadian version makes me think it's a HW issue.
Thank you and regards
Frequency compatibility is set in hardware, and can't be modified with software. You need to buy the phone that is compatible with your carrier's 3G network. As you suspected, this is the reason why AT&T customers (like myself) have paid premium prices for the Bell Canada version of the Z, the only version of the Vision that is fully compatible with AT&T's 850/1900 MHz 3G network.
Aside from frequency compability, the Z and the G2 are essentially the same phone. The G2 has a keyboard button for .www and .com (its a Tab key on the Z). But that's really it. Of course, the Z has Sense, but that is software, and you can flash a Sense ROM if you want.
redpoint73, thank you very much. I have the Evo Shift right now that works on the 3G CDMA network, but my provider just released the 4G HSPA+ GSM network and since then, I feel 3G speeds are getting lower every day and the network isn't as stable anymore as it used to be.
I was about to buy the T-Mobile version, but now I'm confident that I need the Bell version... Will have to wait for a good deal on Ebay. Too bad that HTC has only these options with keyboard, I really like my Evo Shift, but I'm getting speeds as low as 380kbps for download while users with HSPA+ are getting up to 4mbps...
Are you sure that GSM phones even work on Sprint? My understanding is that the your phone needs to be Sprint branded, otherwise they will not have an ESN number to activate in the system.
BTW, please click the "Thanks" button, if my post helped you.
No, I'm in Mexico, my carrier is Iusacell. They used to be a CDMA network, the first 3G network in Mexico built more than 10 years ago, most of us used to buy Sprint phones as they were the best to port to this company, however now they are starting their GSM network and it looks as if they're starting to leave the CDMA network out of the priority, so I'm looking for a phone that will work. I have done my research and they use the 850/1900 frequencies for HSPA+, so most US/Canada phones will work but not T-Mobile.
Thank you...

Ahh, I understand now. That makes a lot more sense. You didn't mention your carrier (or country), but mentioned Sprint, so I assumed that was your carrier.
Right now, it seems that indeed the Bell Canada version of the Desire Z is best fit for what you want (same conclusion that I came to a few months ago).
Redpoint, don't forget the partitions are different on the phone also. The DZ has smaller partitions (system at least) than the G2. This hasn't been an issue... yet, given than every custom so far has been well below the stock size of even the DZ. With the new sense though, things are going to only go up in size for those ROMs. That being said it still shouldn't be an issue.

Hard for me to forget it, since I wasn't aware of that :-/
Whats the exact breakdown of the difference in system partitions?
That's actually opposite of what one would expect, since the Sense ROMs take up more memory.
Yes, I hadn't mentioned my carrier earlier. Now my issue is that shipping from Canada to Mexico is prohibitive (more than 90USD), so maybe I will have to stay with the AT&T inspire... Will have to use Swype or something similar as an alternative to the physical keyboard.

I was going to recommend the Inspire, even though you seemed to need/want a physical keyboard. It looks like a great phone.
The Desire Z is my 3rd smartphone, and all have had physical keyboards. But for my next, I am seriously considering going without the physical keyboard. I can't stand typing on a touch screen by the "traditional" method. But I've found that with Swype, I can type as fast, maybe even faster than with the physical keyboard. I've been finding myself using the physical keyboard much less than I thought I would.
Yes, I really like Swype too, but I have some issues with it. I write moste messages in Spanish, but I also use English and German. Changing languages is not as easy as I think it should be. But well, the main issue for me is that Swype always uses special charecters in Spanish/German (ñ, á, ä, etc.) which is nice on Emails, whatsapp, etc. but is a big problem with SMS texting as carriers in Mexico don't support these characters (it's really stupid) so messages sometimes get messed up completely.
I think that's the main reason why I like the physical keyboard. I have had many smartphones (mogul, touch, diamond, touch pro, motorola droid, htc evo and now the evo shift). I really hated the droid's keyboard, but the shift is really nice to use. Will have to get used to using on screen typing again... I think it's not worth paying 500 bucks for the Desire Z due to shippig if I can get a brand new Inspire for less...
Regards

1. Is it laggy for normal use that is while not too many apps in background?
2. Can it be rooted (I guess yes, from Dev section). If yes, can I run ICS?
3. Any hack or ROM or something for 1080p video?
4. Will you suggest getting this phone now?
5. Most important, is it really both GSM and CDMA?
Thanks

1. I have never experienced lag that was not due to a misbehaving app while running either stock or rooted/custom ROM. This processor is plenty powerful enough for the vast majority of people's uses and this phone has more ram than many phones with the same processor.
2. Yes read the instructions in the stickies in the dev section thoroughly before attempting. Tacoroot is required for the newest firmware. Both ICS and JB ROMs are available and run quite well (well enough for dd for most people anyways). I currently run AOKP but CM9 and sense 3.6/4.0 ROMs are available and are nice too.
3. Not sure. I don't think so, but I could be wrong.
4. If you are buying used for a reasonable price then definitely. If you are upgrading there are better phones available depending on your price range and features that you desire. I would buy it again if that means anything to you.
5. Yes. GSM is meant for global roaming only but if you are sim unlocked (either by calling VZW for an unlock code or by purchasing one elsewhere) it can be used on domestic GSM carriers if you have a sim card for that carrier. Data speeds are edge only on domestic GSM carriers from what I hear. PLEASE DO NOT ASK IF A ROM HAS GSM SUPPORT WITHOUT READING THE ENTIRE OP AS WELL AS SARCHING WITHIN THE THREAD! Thanks for your reply.
What would you prefer between this and Inspire 4G? Seeing I won't be using 4G for years to come, I don't see any considerable difference between the 2.
About the 5th question, I am not very sure about what "global roaming" means here. Suppose I buy this phone on ebay, then will I be able to use it as a GSM device (i.e with SIM card) in another country without any unlock or anything?

Personally, I would prefer this phone just because its confirmed to get the ICS update (Inspire 4G isn't getting official ICS). As a note, the Inspire doesn't use true 4G, but rather HSPA+. Just to let you know.
The phone can be used globally, but it will be hampered with GSM because it would only support Edge or 2G. You would also have to get it unlocked and insert the SIM card as well in order for it to work (don't know how the global unlock work since I'm using Verizon)

To shed a little light on the global unlock for you both, once the unlock code is received from VZW (or eBay, whatever) you install a non-VZW SIM and it will prompt you for the code. Once entered the phone will restart and connect to GSM networks. Once the correct APNs are set, data and MMS work across all.global GSM (2G) networks, and 900/2100MHz HSPA networks, which you'll find in Europe and Australasia.
I have a GSM unlocked unit and use it no worries in Australia. As mentioned before, performance is fine for day-to-day use, and the Incredible S (true GSM variant of Incredible 2) is one of my favourite handsets of all time.

Are you saying that I won't be able to use 3G while on GSM network? Is it true, coz that might be a deal breaker.
Somewhere I read, you can "switch to WCDMA mode which is HSPA/3G". I don't know if this is true or if WCDMA mode will even work with a GSM SIM card.

You will only be able to use 3g if the network uses the 900/2100mhz bands for their 3g. Even the vast majority of Tmo and ATT phones do not receive 3g on the other network currently.

I'll be using it in another country. It uses 2100 frequency band for 3G.
I have another question.
If the phone is not unlocked yet, will a normal flash of a ROM is all that is required to unlock the phone to use it on abroad GSM networks or do I have to get the unlock code? My guess is flashing will not work, but I am confirming this.
Also, if I get a phone with a Bad ESN, will I be able to SIM unlock it and use the phone in other countries on GSM mode, or the phone need to have a Clean ESN in order to SIM unlock it? I am thinking of getting the unlock code from one of the websites that gives the code for some $.
