Hi,
I've got my phone at Insertcoin ( IDK what version ), but for speed improvements I would like to go to Cyanogenmod, but.....
1. I am S-ON.
2. I have Amon Ra recovery.
I've seen several s-off things for cyanogenmod. But I don't prefer to go S-OFF, is it possible to stay S-ON and have cyanogenmod?
And Amon Ra recovery... I prefer it for partitioning SD cards... I have seen already steps from the wiki with Amon Ra
Amon_Ra's Recovery process
1.Download the latest version of CyanogenMod. Optional: Download the Google Apps for the device.
2.Place the CyanogenMod update.zip file on the root of the SD card. Optional: Place the Google Apps .zip on the root of the SD card also.
3.Boot into Amon_Ra's Recovery.
4.Once you enter Amon_Ra's Recovery, scroll up & down with the trackball, and the trackball button to select.
5.Select Wipe, then Wipe data/factory reset
6.Select Flash zip from sdcard.
7.Select the CyanogenMod update.zip. Optional: Install the Google Apps by performing steps 6 & 7 again and choosing the Google Apps update.zip.
8.Once the installation has finished, select Reboot system. The HTC Desire (GSM) now should boot into CyanogenMod.
So its possible with Amon Ra, but do i really need to go S-OFF?
that sounds all good to me far as am concerned you only have to go s-off if you want to change the memory partions using alpharel tables.
And that means?
I just want Cyanogenmod with the ability to set apps to the SD card ( just so I have more then 150 MB ( thats stock )
( And I'm also on Insertcoin already! )

Cyanogenmod doesn't officially support the A2SD+ implemented on Insertcoin ROM. But it is possible to do so by flashing a script. There is a link provided at the bottom of the original post (or the 2nd post I cant remember) on the Cyanogen thread.
As for the S-Off I think you really do not need to do it if you are not ready to change partition tables. The only disadvantage is that you are going to waste system space that can be allocated to your apps since Cyanogenmod requires a lot less system space than Sense roms. But since you are going to do A2SD+ and move everything to the SD, I don't think you'll have problems with running out of space.
You don't need to go s-off.. There is an easy way to send apps to your sd card with cyanogen, download an app called s2e from Android market and follow the instructions. Its the simplest way to achieve the result. I have this installed, I have heaps of apps installed and I have tonnes of internal space left.
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
So, just stay Son , wipe, flash cyanogenmod, flash gapps, and how to do the app2sd then?
And where can i get that app2sd mentioned by timaaaaa?
Like I said just go to Android market and search for s2e
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
Ok, so the steps I have to take
- Wipe my phone with Amon Ra
- Wipe my partition and SD card
- Flash CM7
- Flash Gapps
- Reboot
- Install S2E ( from market )
- Let it install the script
- flash CM7 again.
( Is this right? )
( Do all the steps work with Amon Ra? )
Does S2E work with a ext 2 partition?

Make sure you backup your apps using titanium.
Do all your wipes etc.
Flash cyanogen.
After you flash cyanogen, let it boot once, do the phone setup but skip google account setup. Once you've done that reboot into recovery and flash gapps. Now boot again and do the google account setup.
Go to settings/cyanogen settings/applications and make sure your app download target is set to internal.
Now download s2e, open it and check the boxes you want to move to the ext. You will be prompted to reboot so do that and it will install the script.
Download titanium again from market.
Use titanium to restore your apps.
There is no need to flash cyanogen again.
Yes do your wipes and flashes via recovery.
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
Oh and s2e uses ext4 type partition
Let me know how you go
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
S2E will create the ext partition? Or do I have to create it myself?
( And still the question: )
Is this still possible with Amon Ra recovery?
You will need to partition it yourself, use gparted. I've never used Amon recovery but I think its safe to say you can wipe/flash using it.
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
I you were using Insertcoin before then you should have ext3 or ext4 already..
Sent from HTC Desire via XDA App
I have a ext 2 already... Is ut possible to use this partition for cm7? Dont want to empty my SD card again....
Cyanogen itself doesn't require an ext.. But I think you will need ext4 for the s2e. Just dump your files from the sd to your PC.. Format it, partition it, and dump them back on.
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
I can create ext with amon ra, but on what step?
Before you flash the rom
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
Your steps:
Make sure you backup your apps using titanium.
Do all your wipes etc.
So here must the partitioning? And then how much ext and how much swap? And it is really not possible with a ext2? Otherwise do via amon ra, create ext with ... ext and ... swap, and then upgrade ext2 to ext3 and then to ext4?
Flash cyanogen.
After you flash cyanogen, let it boot once, do the phone setup but skip google account setup. Once you've done that reboot into recovery and flash gapps. Now boot again and do the google account setup.

Anywhere up to 2gb will work ok, and at least 1gb. Zero swap. I've never partitioned via recovery, I just used gparted which allows you to choose ext4 straight away. But if the process you mentioned is how you do it via recovery then I guess you do it that way.. If you don't want to use gparted.

I'm going to bed now, if you have any more questions I will check in the morning.

hello
every single time i try to install a custom rom i get stuck at the HTC boot screen what am i doing wrong ??
for example i tried to install this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861690
i first rooted my phone using unrevoked then backed up my data then i go on recovery wipe data and cache then flash the zip file tried the same on couple more roms but still the same problem so i don't know what am i doing wrong please help !!
Well, the first thing to check is compatibility. That was the first thing I had to learn when browsing these forums. These forums integrate CMDA & GSM Desires. Also, they encorporate the Desire Z, the Desire, and the Desire HD.
First of all- Are you trying to flash a GSM ROM to a CDMA phone?
2) I see that is an HD ROM, do you have the Desire HD (I'm only assuming the ROMs labeled with "HD" in the title are meant for the Desire HD)?
Things like this are stuff you definitely have to take into consideration do the research for when browsing the Desire forums.
Hope this helps a little.
it's under the Desire section not the DesireZ or Desire HD and the video is shows it's tested on Desire )
The ROM in question requires you to have partitioned your SDcard to have both a FAT and EXT partition.
Have you partitioned your SDcard in this way?
My SD card is in FAT32 format but what is EXT partition ?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
It's a good start that when you want to flash a rom you actually read the first post and make sure you understand it.
Ext partitions are not that complicated and searching should give you all the info you need.

Use GParted in Linux or Linux Puppy to wipe and then partion ur card. Check which type of Ext the ROM requires but usually an Ext3 or Ext4 will be required. So if u have a 8GB card make a 1.5GB Ext3 or 4 and then make the remaining space in to a Primary Fat32 partion.

you can also EXT your sd card with Amon RA recovery.
you can download here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839621
read the post!!
you can use unrevoked, choose custom recovery: choose the recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0-CM.img
in the menu you can ext your SD card.
this method i found very easy. after you made an EXT partition you can choose to make it an EXT2, EXT3 of EXT4 whatever you like. do some reading
be aware: your sd card will be formatted if you make an EXT partition.
Guyz can any1 help me install this rom step by step ?

Make a nandroid and copy it to your pc. (It's in the clockwork foldermod).
Decide what version you want A2SD, D2WE or D2EXT, if you have no idea go with the recommend one.
Read the second post and create the required ext partitions. (keep in mind this will wipe your card so copy everything you want to keep to your pc)
Copy your stuff and the rom you want to flash back to the partitioned card.
Boot in to recovery and wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache under advanced.
Go to "install zip from sd" and select your downloaded rom.
Wait till its finished installing.
This should be the way but it's still your responsibility.
Thx bro I will give it a try hope it works their it didn't I will restore my data )

Hi Guys
I flash my Phone now many Times and i have always Problems whit my Device after Flashing. Many Roms have no Lockscreen, i can't send MMS or another things. I read "all" tuts but maybe i do anything wrong :>
1. I Root my Desire whit Unrevoked (newest) whit Custom Recovery (recovery-RA_2.0.1)
2. I splitt my SD Card whit the tool on Revnet.
2a. 3GB @ FAT32 & 1GB @ EXT4
3. Copy the ROM on my SD Card(latest Rom Aces v19(?)).
4. Run Recovery
4a. Wipe Data, devlik cache (I Wipe All! ok no SD-EXT).
4b. Install zip from SD Card
5. Installation - wait wait wait wait wait...
6. Settings + Install Apps...
Is this Wrong?
Alex
EDIT - I USE ONLY A2SD - NO S-OFF ROMS!!!!!!
2 things
1. flash the latest radio
2. if you didn't use Gparted or your recovery the ext4 won't work, if you used it just flash the latest radio
I use the last radio :'( nobody idee?

Do your restore settings even if you use an aosp rom when coming from sense rom or reverse? Partition your sd card directly in recovery or with gparted (both primary). Never use other tools, it seems they cause problems.
I use gParted for my SD Card EXT4- I Restore always Nothing. If i install a new Rom, i fill all manuel I have Time and Emails/SMS ... dont need it ^^
In which order do you create partitions? Are they both set to primary?

Hello all I'm new to the desire which I bought on eBay a few weeks ago and now I want to install new ROMS. I have rooted my desire using unrevoked a few weeks ago but when I use clockwork recovery to partition SD card all that happens is it fails almost straight away so I have tried to root it again using same method and that also fails almost strait away. Would it be best to factory reset the desire then root it again? I'm running stock RUU 2.2
Also I want to flash a newer Rom so I can add lots more apps but I don't know which is the best to use so any help on this also would be great!

If you have clockworkmod recovery and want to flash a custom rom you don't need to root again as nearly all custom roms are prerooted so when you flash the rom you will have root access already.
I would partition the card using a gparted live cd on the pc and then factory reset & clear dalvik cache from clockworkmod and install the custom rom zip from sd card.
You may want to make a nandroid backup in clockworkmod first.
There are loads of guides on partitioning your card and the thread for the rom will probably give you an installation guide.
As for the choice of rom you will have to try a few and see what you like. A few that I have used are CM7.2 gingerbread is AOSP(no HTC sense), runnymead AIO gingerbread with sense 3.5 (like the sensation) or nikez for ICS.
Good luck

Excellent! thanks for that this will save me some time! I assume I will need to flash S-OFF before I partition and nand backup?
Thanks for your help so far!
If you have successfully flashed clockworkmod and rooted with unrevoked you don't need to be s-off to flash a custom rom or perform backup from recovery.
The s-off applies to the internal memory of the phone not the external card. I personally remove the sd card and create partitions with the pc.

As Hans moleman already said, i wouldn't recommend to partition your SD-Card via ClockworkMod because it produces known problems. If you have a card reader in your PC i would also suggest gparted or if you want to use a Windows tool use the MiniTool Partition Wizard.

Best thing to do is first flash a custom rom. Making sure to clear all data when you do. Then download Ubuntu and Virtual Box. Install Virtual Box and create a new VM with the Ubuntu ISO. Navigate to the Ubuntu app store when it is installed and download GParted. Once that is done mount the sd card into the VM by clicking devices, USB and then the name of the card. Partition the SD card with Fat32 and a secondary of your choice (I use ext4)

After s-off, you will install 4ext recovery. From recovery, you will install SuperSu flashable zip, which you can get from the official thread. Google it.
Thats the rooting process.
Redux is very fast, stable, and a good rom to start with.
That is the exact order, except installing 4ext recovery comes right after s-off.

do i need some backup(ROM backup) before i set new ROM? titanium or nand? and what to do with it when i do that?
and can i remove custom rom same way as i remove stock ROM?
You do a backup with titanium, so you can restore your apps later, on your new rom, and you make a nandroid backup every time you do major changes to the phone.
If you want to restore the stock rom, just restore the nandroif backup from recovery.

Rooting your phone is a must. Post that you can search from a variety of ROMs available here. Can go for redux as suggested above, or any other GB based rom - MildWild is the most recently updated.
With stock hboot - you get 150MB as user memory. You can change your hboot to cm7r2 and get about 300MB in user memory. However, not all ROMs are compatible with cm7r2 hboot. Check before you change hboot.

Did you make an ext partition? If not, backup all your sd-card contents on your pc, go in 4ext recovery, choose tools>partition sd-card, and make a 512mb-1gb ext3 partition. Swap-skip, sd-ext2-skip.
Then, you can install an a2sd script, like Mounts2sd ( google it) and move apps, data or dalvik, or all of them to sd.
i followed some guide he didnt had that 4ext on it...
anyway i installed 4ext recovery now and i stuck on 2 things in there

1. will it work?
2. and it say download downgrader - there is zip and img file which one do i need to download and rename zip or img one?
3. when i flash RUU file i put it in root on SD card too right?
ps i have some RUU bravo froyo that i download but its exe found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
so which one do i use at the end and how? (to get it back to stock) so i can get 4ext this time or i can just get 4ext somehow?
To install 4ext recovery, simply download the recovery control from the Play Store, then flash the recovery with it. I recommend the latest touch version.
You just rooted your phone. Why would you want to flash a RUU?
thanks... i have downloaded it instead of install it...

System and data are internal memory partitions. You can change their layout by changing hboot.
You only need one sd-ext partition. You can make one using 4ext recovery.
Simply backup all the contents of your sd-card on your PC. Then enter recovery, select Tools>Partition sd-card, and make a 1gb ext3 partition ( or ext4, depending on the rom you're using). Skip swap and sd-ext2, and anything else.
Then, copy everything you had on your sd back, and use an a2sd script, like Mounts2sd (google it).
And.. Voila.
I recommend only moving apps and dalvik to sd-ext. Leaving data on internal makes the rom run faster.

You need to create only an EXT partition. you can skip swap. The size of EXT partition may be minimum 512MB (If you have a small SD Card). The recommended is 1GB (Don't go for more than that).
Then you can go on flashing ROMs on your phone. Most of the ROMs have in-build apps2sd script. If not, you can flash one of the scripts or may use s2e (Simple2ext) which is available on Google Play...
If you just want to move the apps to sd, keeping your ROM, you will need to flash one of the scripts. But what the hell, why not try to flash some ROMs
Hi,
I'm running MildWild V-4.8 on my Desire, and I got a 8 GB class 10 sd-card i would like to partition.
I've been reading a lot about it, but they all seem to use clockworkmod recovery mode "advanced > "partition sdcard". I dont have that option, bc it just doesnt appear on my phone.. what do i do? How could a partition my sd-card and make it a "part of" the internal memory?
Kind regards
Christoffer
Ps. I think i did a fair search of the forum already, but if i've i missed a the answer somewhere then im sorry!

I tried out the 4ext recovery, but it didnt manage to partition it, so instead i partitioned it (2gb ext3) on my computer following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning.
I then used s2e and selected Applications, Dalvik cache and Download cache before i rebooted.
My phone still says that the internal memory is148 mb? What did i miss ?
NB. I partitioned and used s2e on C7, do I have to re-flash before it will see my sd-card?
Strange that 4 ext didn't work, even though your phone is still reporting limited storage, if things are working as they should add you install apps that should remain roughly the same. Maybe download something to see?

I tried installing it, and i removed rom-manager, but whenever i rebooted i got into clockworkmod recovery, which does not give me the option of partition the sd-card.
I will try using gparted instead, but my question still remains.
Once they card has been formated, is there anything else i need to do besides s2e and reboot it? I've been doing some google-search and i've read about hboot and even flashing the phone again? Is this really something i need to do, or should my phone se the ext3 as internal harddrive right after i've run s2e and rebooted it?

i also recommend gparted, it's the best method alongside 4ext recovery. step 5 here is better.
do not use S2E, read the app description: "S2E works only with CyanogenMod7, CyanogenMod9 and CyanogenMod10". also, you don't need to do anything else to move apps to sd-ext with this ROM.
the reason it shows only 148MB is because you are on stock hboot. basically your current system size is 250MB, and the rom's system size is only about 110MB, wasting 140MB.
you need to s-off and change hboot to cm7r2 hboot to maximise space. it has a system size of 145MB. (there are ways to optimise it further but this will be the easiest way for you.)
It will still only show 287MB of internal afterwards, and it will never 'see' the partition. keep your apps on 'internal', this should trick your apps to sd-ext.
so...
- backup your apps etc using titanium or similar
- backup your sd to computer
- repartition sd using gparted guide exactly
- copy everything back to sd
- s-off if you haven't already
- change to cm7r2 hboot (search for guides, i recommend using fastboot, set it up and read the fastboot bit here).
- reboot into recovery, full wipe and flash rom.
- restore apps, keep them on internal as suggested.
- use another app like 'diskusage' to browse all your partitions, you should see your sd-ext filling up with app apks and dalvik cache as expected.
- internal memory will still decrease as app data is still stored on internal nand, but it will do so much slower, and 287MB should be plenty for app data.
sounds like a faff, but the guides and info are already there for a reason...you'll be using the space more efficiently, and hopefully understand a bit more how things work and where everything is...

After reading this post, I think he just installed the 4ext app, without flashing the actual recovery, which made me facepalm.
Do you have s-off?
