I'm looking to install a Desire HD rom on my Desire and it requires an SD-EXT partition.I tried partitioning through Rom Manager but, even tho i have it ,it says that i don't have clockwork mod recovery installed. What should i do? is it safe to overwrite the clockworkmod recovery installation through ROM manager? And is it possible to partition the sd card directly via recovery?
Clockwork Mod doesn't have partitioning in it, you'd need to use AmonRA to partition in recovery - it's the reason why I went to AmonRA as I have a 1GB partition for the RCmixHD ROM (which is awesome btw)
Thanks for the answer.
How do i flash amonRA over clockworkmod? do i use unrevoked again?
Using ROM Manager with clockworkmod I was able to partition my sd card. I also flashed desire hd rom on my desire. The partitioning process using rom manager is a bit wierd.. my 8gb class 10 sd card partitioned without hiccups, the 2 gb class 4 card did get through
Yeah but my problem is that ROm Manager doesn't let me partition my sd card because it says that i don't have clockworkmod installed even tho i have it...

Did you root your phone with unrevoked? If so then it must work via ROM manager otherwise it wont.
The directions to work on ROM Manager are this ones:
Keep in mind that first inside ROM Manager you need to select the option Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, and after that go to the SD partition option otherwise it wont work. And also remember you need to have the PREMIUM version otherwise it might not work
Now if you want to have more than a 512 mb you can use gparted. It is a livecd which means that can work on linux, mac or windows just reboot with the cd inside and is quite straightforward to use. Hope this helps.
i had this problem and here's what i did at the top of Rom Manager, it says Flash clockworkmod recovery. select it and select HTC Desire. then go to partition SD Card and select 512MB for Desire HD Roms. and a swap file of 32mb and it would simply boot into recovery and do the job. hope this helps
hello
every single time i try to install a custom rom i get stuck at the HTC boot screen what am i doing wrong ??
for example i tried to install this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861690
i first rooted my phone using unrevoked then backed up my data then i go on recovery wipe data and cache then flash the zip file tried the same on couple more roms but still the same problem so i don't know what am i doing wrong please help !!
Well, the first thing to check is compatibility. That was the first thing I had to learn when browsing these forums. These forums integrate CMDA & GSM Desires. Also, they encorporate the Desire Z, the Desire, and the Desire HD.
First of all- Are you trying to flash a GSM ROM to a CDMA phone?
2) I see that is an HD ROM, do you have the Desire HD (I'm only assuming the ROMs labeled with "HD" in the title are meant for the Desire HD)?
Things like this are stuff you definitely have to take into consideration do the research for when browsing the Desire forums.
Hope this helps a little.
it's under the Desire section not the DesireZ or Desire HD and the video is shows it's tested on Desire )
The ROM in question requires you to have partitioned your SDcard to have both a FAT and EXT partition.
Have you partitioned your SDcard in this way?
My SD card is in FAT32 format but what is EXT partition ?

It's a good start that when you want to flash a rom you actually read the first post and make sure you understand it.
Ext partitions are not that complicated and searching should give you all the info you need.

Use GParted in Linux or Linux Puppy to wipe and then partion ur card. Check which type of Ext the ROM requires but usually an Ext3 or Ext4 will be required. So if u have a 8GB card make a 1.5GB Ext3 or 4 and then make the remaining space in to a Primary Fat32 partion.

you can also EXT your sd card with Amon RA recovery.
you can download here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839621
read the post!!
you can use unrevoked, choose custom recovery: choose the recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0-CM.img
in the menu you can ext your SD card.
this method i found very easy. after you made an EXT partition you can choose to make it an EXT2, EXT3 of EXT4 whatever you like. do some reading
be aware: your sd card will be formatted if you make an EXT partition.
Guyz can any1 help me install this rom step by step ?

Make a nandroid and copy it to your pc. (It's in the clockwork foldermod).
Decide what version you want A2SD, D2WE or D2EXT, if you have no idea go with the recommend one.
Read the second post and create the required ext partitions. (keep in mind this will wipe your card so copy everything you want to keep to your pc)
Copy your stuff and the rom you want to flash back to the partitioned card.
Boot in to recovery and wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache under advanced.
Go to "install zip from sd" and select your downloaded rom.
Wait till its finished installing.
This should be the way but it's still your responsibility.
Thx bro I will give it a try hope it works their it didn't I will restore my data )

i did wat u said and did everything right tried 2 install d2ext and d2we stuck at boot screen the a2sd pass the boot screen but it keeps loadin never starts the screen
After I read through several hundred pages on different topics but all treating the sd-ext one or the other way, I still think, that my problem has another twist.
I recently rooted my phone and I'm running Leedroid 3.0.8.2 APSD with S-On. Now everything runs perfectly: quick system info shows my apsd partition, apps are saved there (also new ones I installed after flashing the rom), titanium backups them and my phone runs smoothly.
But, clockworkmod cannot mount the sd-ext, cannot backup it nor restore it. And root explorer cannot find it.
I tried to format the sd card and remaking the partitions. I tried all other solutions I found on xda, but the problem remains.
Can anyone help?

hi,
seems that your problem is your CWM version, already read a problem's like this.. buggy recovery.
look into devlopment thread recovery cwm, think this issue is related there.
depends the version u got
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112658
be aware that to flash new recovery, best way is to be s-off
hope this help
How did you format it? With Linux or the Rommanager,...? Is this problem new?
Maybe you have to flash a new version of the Clockworkmod. Therefore you would have to S-off the device.
Please give us more information.
I made the partions using MiniTool Partition Wizard on Windows. I have cwm 2.5.0.7. But the first time I made the partitions I used the rommanager.
The thing is, that the root explorer doesn't recognize the sd-ext either. I will try to flash a new recovery though. Can't I use unrevoked for this too?
The format of the sd-ext partition is ext3.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
After the first partitioning, I zipalingned the sd-ext using the recommended tool by Leedroid. But after that I was stuck on the splash screen, so I remade the partitions using MiniTool.
Then I was able to flash the rom and get my phone going again, but had the problem with sd-ext.
A week later, I wiped the sdcard anew and tried again, but the problem persisted.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I had a similar problem. I solved it by flashing the alignment patch twice (first time: splash screen freeze, second time: bootup and mountable in recovery)
Goodluck
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Please try to format the card with linux, the rommanager or the cwm. It is only possible to flash another recovery when you are s-off as far as I know.
You can also backup the data with linux. Copy the files to the card back and restore the ext in the recovery otherwise it won't work. I would also backup the apps with TB before just to be on the safe site.

Hi don 't use alignment zip iit was design for typical rom (data2ext ) 'use instead gpartes but since your rom with a2sd or whtever with ext boot means that U got a working ext fs... To see what is stored in ext use quick system info or browse to system/sd directory.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Hello!
I think, your ext is working well. If its not working, you should not be able to use the Rom as you described. As written by other user, look with root explorer into the directory /system/sd. Here you see the content of the ext-partition. You won't see a folder like /sd-ext in a file explorer. On a running phone the Fat32 partition of sd-card is accessable as /sdcard, the ext-partition as /system/sd .
After you mount your sd-ext in recovery, look into the mounts section, there you should see a line called unmount sd-ext - if you see this, the ext-partition should be successfully mounted. In recovery with mounted sd-ext you should be able to access ext-partition with adb, mounted as /sd-ext
Hope what I have written makes sense
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Ah, I always thought that I should look for a folder called sd-ext. I know think that the problem lies with the cwm and the fact that v2.5.0.7 doesn't recognize my sd-ext partition, probably because it is ext3. The sd-ext partition isn't and cannot be mounted in recovery.
You think flashing a new recovery could help? And if yes, what is the best way to flash it when s-on?
Thanks!
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I would try to format the card again (with linux or the rommanager, cwm).
You have to be S-Off to flash a new recovery as I told you before.
Therefore I would first try to format the sd card again (not with windows).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112658 if you want to flash a new version (You would have to s-off the device. It could be that you have to install a ruu and reroot the device for that procedure, because alpharev is not able to install the hboot with every rom)

I Use the same recovery like u. No problems with ext-partition (ext3) here. I don't believe its your recovery, I think its your sd-card or partition. Download gparted boot cd, burn it to cd, boot it. Delete at first all partitions on the sd-card, kick apply! Then build new partitions. There are a lot videos in YouTube about using gparted if necessary.

1. root it (alpharev/unrevoked)
2. s-off (revolutionary)
3. NAND backup the current ROM from recovery mode
4. flash custom HBoot based on your requirement (refer to table in alpharev.nl)
[by this you get more internal memory increased, maximum you can get
332Mb for data]
5. install custom ROM of your choice which uses different scripts to move apps
to sd (s2e, a2sd, data2ext, etc....)
6. NABD backup the newly installed custom ROM
7. partition SD card for Fat32 and EXT3 (1gb) using gparted
8. reflash it the custom rom or restore from the back
you can refer to rooting guide which is available in the xda forum, below url may also help you regarding custom roms

What our sarcastic friend Terepin is trying to say is that you can't really use the SD card as an extension of your phone's internal memory without using an A2SD ROM.

Root your phone mate, and then use a RoM with data2SD If you want to stay with HTC sense then I recommend Droidzones RoMs.
This one is Sense 2.1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1143456
And this one is Sense 1.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045824
Note you will need a SD card class 4 and above, Read up about Gparted after you have Rooted your phone this will let you partition your Sd card Giving you upto 2GB internal Memory.
If your bored of HTC Sense, I recommend MIUI RoM its superb
Good luck
HUummm... why is it always so hard for me?
I tried to root with un Revoked which I have used in the past but that failed because I have 2.3.3 installed.
I then went back to my Froyo RUU but that failed because of the H Boot.
Finally I rooted with http://revolutionary.io and now need to sort myself out with a ROM.
Just a note: you don't need Gparted for ext partition. You can either format your entire card with CWM, or you can use free partition manager EASUS Partition Master Home to create ext3 partition and then convert it with alignement script from coolexe. It certainly saves time.

Hi everybody,
got the same problem as the person who started this thread with the memory issues. Done everything except install a custom rom, which I am about to do.
(note: currently 0n 2.3.3)
Currently have CM 7.1 downloaded on computer and going to install....BUT every instruction i see requires me to have rom manager/ clockworkmod recovery. HOWEVER, I can't install these because ''this app can't be installed in your country''. unfortunately used to this.
So does anyone by chance have any links to instructions or have instructions of how I can install this without downloading any apps, hopefully an idiot proof version.(Not worried about saving a recovery etc....phone is basically blank.)
Also would CM 7.1 be a good start?? Is there any easier rom to install that still has the apps2sd feature which is the primary point of doing all this( maybe miui).
Thanks in advance for any help.
Regards,
rkdeane

Hi There,
First off, this is my second time installing a custom ROM and I had someone else Root this phone but I used revolutionary to S-Off. I haven't installed a custom kernel and it's running clockworkmod 2.5.07.
I flashed and installed PARANOIDANDROID Woh 4.2.2 -------------------------------------->[v. 3.10b2/7th/March/2013] as per the instructions. Before starting I formatted the microsd card to 512mb of EXT4 with remaining 6.whatever Gig's of Fat32 (I used Minitool Partition Wizard on Win 7). Both were set as primary, while Fat32 was set to active, EXT4 was set to none (didn't think it made a difference?).
Everything installed fine, however, I first noticed issue when i went to run the terminal script for a2sd and it said it was read only (as attached). I tried to change permission to read/write and that didn't work. Then I realized after mounting USB storage connecting to Win 7 and opening Minitool Partition (because sd wouldn't show in My Computer) that all that was left on the micro sd was the FAT32 partition and nothing else.
So where do I go from here? I haven't added any Google account yet or did much else because there is only 14.65MB on internal now and I obviously can't send anything to sd and although I thought GAPPS went to sd in some form I guess not.
Can I recreate the EXT4 and push anything that was originally supposed to be on that partition onto it and then start installing apps there?... or do I need to repartition and reflash everything?
Also if I need to reflash, how can I ensure the same thing doesn't happen with the micro sd?
CWM wasn't formatting when I was trying to partition from Cyanogenmod 7 running Gingerbread (although then I read that CWM has bugs and could patition NAND and brick phone) so Minitool was my only sort of n00b option despite that I was having some issues but it seemed to be all fine before flashing 4.2.2.
Hopefully the attached photos will provide any further info you need to help.
Truly appreciate your help! This is my GF's Desire and I've been in the dog house playing with it all week (Cyanmod 7 was killing battery and was buggy, even stable version).
Thanks in advance once again!
** UPDATE ***
I just used my SD adapter directly into Win 7 and it's showing both partitions in Minitool and the Fat32 is available in My Computer showing music folders etc. However, the script for A2sd still never worked in Terminal Emulator saying "sh: can't create N: read-only file system"
So it appears the partition and the data is there and available but does the above message mean I can't send apps to the sd because it's read only?
Thanks again :S
Well one of your mistakes may have been using mini tool partition wizard. Many users have reported it's unreliability, and i've also had bad experiences with it in the past.
I would recommend using gparted to delete all partitions, and then using it to format the whole card to fat32.
Then install 4ext recovery instead of cwm, and use that create the ext4 partition.

Actually, I just ran your terminal codes above and that worked without reformatting or flashing!! It moved something like 94 or 96 apps and now shows 139 MB of internal storage!! Wow, I'm sooo excited. Imagine a n00b installing the latest version of Android on what is basically the original Android flagship HTC Desire/Nexus One!
BTW Should the developer maybe update with your script above vs the one listed which didn't work for me?
You guys rock!
I will start using GParted though and I assume using the liveimage USB would be best for me.
Now, I have to decide if I want to root my S3. I have 6 months left of my 1 year warranty so that's the only reason I've been debating it. Although most people say they've never heard Samsung not doing hardware repair just because a device is rooted. That sound about right?

Despite the fact that it's working now, should I indeed start from scratch before she's gets too comfortable with this? Flash recommended recovery and reformat sd and reflash everything? (since I originally formatted with Minitool)
BTW it appears that when we install apps will they appear to initially go to internal but after reboot they move to sd, is this actually what is happening and we should always reboot after installs and updates? I just installed about 8 apps and the internal shows it's down to 39mb but then upon reboot it's back up to 76.46 (Originally at 139 but I assume it's all app data consuming it).
Do you recommend anything to occasionally clear app data to ensure there is always space?
For the S3 I would love it if you provided a link to root without tripping the flash counter! Gesh, I love Android more and more everyday (never an issue without solution)... this community rocks!

I just tried installing one more app ROM Toolbox (only 8.something MB) and it said insufficent space despite showing the above amount just before install. Before installing or updating anything when I realized the ext was still there, it showed I had 267MB available and I only just installed about 45mb worth of apps, likely updated about 40MB as well. So the ext4 shouldn't be full yet. Could this actually be because of the poor partition?
Ya all that stuff shouldn't be happening. I'm using the same ROM and have non of these issues, so its likely the ext partition.
Your best bet is to start again, and do what I said a couple posts up.

I'm going to attempt this now. First question is that the 4ext instructions say to download the updater, put on sd card and install. Then they instruct you to partition from there. They list the alternative as GParted.
You're saying to use GParted first and then install 4ext to partition. I just want to be sure on this but also if I format first, where I already have apps on sd will this mess anything up not allowing recovery flash or anything?
I suppose once I format the sd based on the current a2sd rom that only recovery will function. Just want to be sure on steps.
Thanks!

i said to use gparted to delete all the partitions, then use 4ext to make the ext partition. But now that i think about it, its probably more efficient to use gparted to do everything. So just follow the gparted method in the guide.
I would recommend creating a 1gb ext4 partition and whatevers left fat32. Also theres no need to make a swap partition for this rom.
Its perfectly fine to format the card even with the apps on it. Again just to recap this is basically what you should do:
1. Use gparted to completely wipe all partitions on the card just for a clean start, then create the fat32 and ext4 partitions (use the guide)
2. Once the partitioning is done, put the rom + and gapps on the card (on the fat32 partition)
3. Put the sd into the phone, boot into recovery and choose wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, then go to advanced and wipe dalvik
4. Flash the rom and gapps
5. Once the rom is flashed reboot and give it a couple minutes to settle. Then run these commands in terminal:
Code:
su
a2sd install
y
n
y
6. From then on, all apps you install should automatically go to the ext partition. I'd also still recommend installing 4ext recovery...i find it better for the desire than cwm.

Also just to be sure, the link from xda for instructions on gparted say a bootable cd, however usb seems easier, is that okay to use instead?
Thanks (I'm growing

ya that should be fine. Just make sure you create the bootable usb properly by following the instructions from their site
Why go to the hassel of downloading and using gparted when u can just use 4ext recovery?? if u have a bad partition, 4ext will say ur partitions aint aligned properly or something then u just partition with 4ext recovery. sorted

he used minitool to partition the card which may have corrupted it. Wouldnt it be safer to start fresh using gparted to wipe all the partitions, so that he wont have any further issues in the future?

minitool just doesnt align it properly, just use 4ext recovery. so all he has to do is save whatever from the sdcard to pc then partition sdcard with 4ext and it will be done right. trust me, if he flashes 4ext recovery then in recovery, goto tools and check partition alignment and i bet it will say ur partitions are not aligned properly. i tried minitool ages ago to see what all the fuss was about it being sh1te and 4ext said that my partitions aint aligned so i re partitioned with 4ext and all was fine again.
Well this is welcoming because 4ext seems much easier for a n00b like me if it'll work just as well.
I was going to do a 2gb ext4 partition, is that okay versus 1gb?
Btw do you recommend any custom kernel with the desire in this rom? I noticed it is a bit laggy at times and sometimes requires a few taps before certain things activate. Maybe kernels are a little too advanced for me now though?
Or maybe some cpu tweaks or anything. I do own ROM toolbox.

Anything over 1.5gb for the ext partition is not recommended, so you probably shouldn't do 2gb.
The kernel that comes with the ROM is usually the best for the ROM, and theres not much you can do about the speed in jb roms. Ive tried the supercharger script but i honestly didnt notice any increase in speed. If your looking for a faster ROM use gingerbread.
Also dont mess around too much in rom toolbox if u dont know what your doing, you might get stuck in a boot loop and you will have to reflash the ROM.
All had worked out well and indeed the original minitool said the fat32 wasn't properly aligned. The only thing which keeps aborting is the calendar fix. I noticed chrominum's post about corrupted for our sd, redownload, check md5 and reflash. If doesn't work reformat sd, clear everything repartition and try again.
I did all that and same thing. It doesn't say why it won't work but just aborting per attached.
It did work for me previously in cwm. I only installed the last rc and not the testing version of 4ext.

We were posting at the same time. I'm starting all over again with 1.5g and we'll also see if that helps the calendar fix work.
Thanks!
