[Q] No "partition sdcard" - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm running MildWild V-4.8 on my Desire, and I got a 8 GB class 10 sd-card i would like to partition.
I've been reading a lot about it, but they all seem to use clockworkmod recovery mode "advanced > "partition sdcard". I dont have that option, bc it just doesnt appear on my phone.. what do i do? How could a partition my sd-card and make it a "part of" the internal memory?
Kind regards
Christoffer
Ps. I think i did a fair search of the forum already, but if i've i missed a the answer somewhere then im sorry!

I'm not sure who "they"are, but I use 4ext recovery to partition mine, just boot to recovery and see which you have.
Be aware I'm pretty sure partitioning will erase ALL data on the card!

I tried out the 4ext recovery, but it didnt manage to partition it, so instead i partitioned it (2gb ext3) on my computer following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning.
I then used s2e and selected Applications, Dalvik cache and Download cache before i rebooted.
My phone still says that the internal memory is148 mb? What did i miss ?
NB. I partitioned and used s2e on C7, do I have to re-flash before it will see my sd-card?

Strange that 4 ext didn't work, even though your phone is still reporting limited storage, if things are working as they should add you install apps that should remain roughly the same. Maybe download something to see?

minitool is bad at partitioning sdcards, cant believe 4ext didnt work, u must not have done it correctly. anyway if 4ext didnt work, u should always use gparted instead.

I tried installing it, and i removed rom-manager, but whenever i rebooted i got into clockworkmod recovery, which does not give me the option of partition the sd-card.
I will try using gparted instead, but my question still remains.
Once they card has been formated, is there anything else i need to do besides s2e and reboot it? I've been doing some google-search and i've read about hboot and even flashing the phone again? Is this really something i need to do, or should my phone se the ext3 as internal harddrive right after i've run s2e and rebooted it?

i also recommend gparted, it's the best method alongside 4ext recovery. step 5 here is better.
do not use S2E, read the app description: "S2E works only with CyanogenMod7, CyanogenMod9 and CyanogenMod10". also, you don't need to do anything else to move apps to sd-ext with this ROM.
the reason it shows only 148MB is because you are on stock hboot. basically your current system size is 250MB, and the rom's system size is only about 110MB, wasting 140MB.
you need to s-off and change hboot to cm7r2 hboot to maximise space. it has a system size of 145MB. (there are ways to optimise it further but this will be the easiest way for you.)
It will still only show 287MB of internal afterwards, and it will never 'see' the partition. keep your apps on 'internal', this should trick your apps to sd-ext.
so...
- backup your apps etc using titanium or similar
- backup your sd to computer
- repartition sd using gparted guide exactly
- copy everything back to sd
- s-off if you haven't already
- change to cm7r2 hboot (search for guides, i recommend using fastboot, set it up and read the fastboot bit here).
- reboot into recovery, full wipe and flash rom.
- restore apps, keep them on internal as suggested.
- use another app like 'diskusage' to browse all your partitions, you should see your sd-ext filling up with app apks and dalvik cache as expected.
- internal memory will still decrease as app data is still stored on internal nand, but it will do so much slower, and 287MB should be plenty for app data.
sounds like a faff, but the guides and info are already there for a reason...you'll be using the space more efficiently, and hopefully understand a bit more how things work and where everything is...

Hi, I have been trying for quite some time to flash this rom onto my Desire but I keep getting caught in a bootloop. The link to the rom is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250815. I have a Telus HTC Desire, I have S-Off and am using CWM-AlphaRev Recovery v2.5.1.8. My hboot is CM7r2 and I have been searching the previously mentioned thread but can't figure out why there is bootloop. Can somebody walk me through the steps on how to fix this issue?
Did you partition your SD card with ext partition?
SwiftKeyed from dGB using Transparent XDA App
No I did not. How do you even do this? Also, will that delete everything on my sd?

You have that option in AlphaRev Recovery v2.5.1.8.
And yes,its format all data on SD card so make backup of your data
After I partition my sd, do I put everything back on to it and then try the flash again?

Yes that will work.
Unfortunately the op in the thread does not state that an external partition is needed. But yes, an ext4 partition of 1gb will be enough to get the rom to work.
Alright. I will try this out and post later with my result. Thanks guys!
Use an ext partition with minimum 1 Gigabyte to make sure there is enough space.
SwiftKeyed from dGB using Transparent XDA App
It worked but it seems to be a bit laggy. I'm not sure if this is because it is a beta still, or I did the partitioning wrong. I chose 1 Gb as my first option to partition, but then it gives an option after saying 0M, 32M, 64M, etc. I chose the 32M, is that still right?

PVT4 ver. and move apps to SD problems

Hello.
Recently I got changed faulty motherboard of my HTC Bravo GSM. Before that I was using CM7 and other custom Roms with the scipts that moves apps to Sd. Discovered that my new motherboard is PVT4 revision, so the root process was not so easy like with PVT1, but I managed to root it.
The problem is now, when I use any ROM + scipts that moves apps to EXT-SD, the phone starts to freeze, lag, and many applications or system processes wants to 'Force Close'. Tried two microSD cards, full system wipe - all the same.
With Old motherboard CM7 + Simple2ext woked great (because of faulty MB it rebooted constantly, but no lags ar Force closes)
So does the PVT4 version somehow affect the process of application data and dalvik cache moving to EXT-SD?
Hoping for help. Thanks.
Things to try:-
- Redo partitioning and format of sdcard with 4ext or gparted only.
- Which a2sd? Darktremor works for me with cm7.
- Move in stages in a2sd. First move apps. Then move dalvik. Check in stages.
Not encountering any issues like you do. PVT4+CM7+S2E
via xda app
I'm not sure but I think you need s-off to have a2sd scripts working properly.

I rooted the phone firstly, with Revolutinary - it gave S-off, and the symptoms were the same. I thought it didnt like the rooting method, so I rerooted it with Revolutionary and amon ra revocvery, but id didnt change anything
I tried S2E (simple2ext), tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342387 too. All the same.
Ext3 or Ext4, does it make any difference?

Which recovery do you use? If you used cwm to partition your sd than that can make problems. Use 4ext to partition your sd.

used g-parted to make partitions - ext3, linux-swap, fat32. Recovery is Amon Ra. Still dont have a clue in which direction to search
Use ext4 file system for sd-ext, don't use swap cause most of roms don't require it. I also recommend you to install 4ext recovery and repartition sd using it. You can find it here
www.4ext.net
Go there and download recovery updater app and use it to flash recovery.

You need to have only 2 primary partitions. First - fat32. Second - ext4. Swap not req.
Suggest redo.

S2E app on the market. I really don't bother with all the other scripts and implementations out there.
re-formatted SD card - 1024 - ext4, remaining - fat32. ROM - cm-7-20120826-NIGHTLY-bravo and installed Darktremor Apps2SD 2.7.5.3 Beta 04. Moved apps and dalvik cache to sd-ext.
Now installing apps, so far no glitches and force closes. GPS works without fixes, as it was with stable CM releases. So fingers crossed.
Thanks for the suggestions

I'm not getting that problem whatsoever. I'm on Aug 19th nightlies. My suggestion is to do a clean install. Check everything is working fine before you install your apps. I've used S2E on the Playstore and never had a problem with it.
You never specified what hboot or recovery you are using. Also what tool you've used to repartition your SD card. Gparted would be the best one to use aside from 4ExtRecovery's sd partition feature.

Hboot is stock and the recovery is Amon Ra. Hboot version could change anything? To format sd card I used Gparted.

I use a custom Hboot basically somewhere between Oxygen and CM7r2 in System size. So I really do not need to move /data/dalvik and /data/data to the sd-ext like your set up do. Advantage is my phone doesnt have to read those data from the SD card and lessens the load quite a bit making it a bit fast on pulling up info.
Anyway, try to just use the rom without any of your apps and see if the issue persists. One thing you can also try is fix permissions via recovery. I would also recommend using 4EXT Recovery. You'll notice that it's quite popular on the desire forum.
installed Stock ROM + unrooted my Desire. And the flashlight still doesnt work.. Eh, back to the warranty... but at least there were no force closes and gliches any more.

[Q] Rooted, S-Off, hbooted, CM7, but can't partition??

Hey guys, as the title mentions, I've got my device almost up to speed. The trouble is, I can't seem to get it to partition properly. Or at all. I'm at 20mb of internal space left, and that's really hampering my ability to enjoy this otherwise fantastic phone.
I've tried Minitool Partition wizard, but my device thinks its corrupts my SD card. I've tried ROM manager (setting it to 512mb external and 0mb swap), but rom manager runs, reboots the phone, and nothing changes. Well. Mostly. I tested it out by installing a 10mb app from the store, but it used up the internal storage space, and disappeared! I can't find and uninstall it anymore! This is driving me absolutely crazy. I've lost so much time looking through forums and trying things out.
- uninstall rom manager
- do not use minitool partition wizard
- backup your sd card and use gparted to partition sd card, step 5 here. alternatively you can use 4ext recovery, easy to install as you are already s-off. copy everything back once partitioned.
you say you are 'hbooted', but have you actually changed your hboot to cm7r2, this will repartition your internal memory so you have more space. search for guides (how to change hboot...), recommend to do this through fastboot commands (again this is easy because you are already s-off).
once this is all set up (cm7r2 hboot and correctly partitioned sd card), you need to use a script or app to move the apps to the partition. i recommend something like s2e or link2sd.
for general reading, i recommend these set of guides.
Use 4ext recovery to partition SD, and get rid of ROM Manager.

it's not that it's a bad app, just particularly bad for htc desire. can screw things up. found out here, suroot is well respected and i trust his advice
plus you don't actually need to use rom manager...all the actions can be carried out within recovery anyway.
Hey Eddie, thanks for the info. I'll load up the Gparted this evening. Get this damn device running properly finally.
Once partitioned, I'm worried about this aforementioned missing facebook app. I don't care that it's not working, only that it's taking up unusable space. I'm down to 13mb of internal storage. After using Gparted to partition, would it be best for me to do a fresh install of CM7? And would that reset my root and S-off?
I'm also constantly getting confused about fastboot and hboot. Aren't they intrinsically linked? Actually, scratch that. What is fastboot, and how does it relate to hboot?
And why, when I tried to partition my card using clockwork recovery, did it update (and possibly replace) my recovery?
As for whether I have CM7 hboot set up, I'm honestly not sure. My hboot / fastboot window (the one that shows up after rebooting, with a white screen and 3 android on the bottom on skateboards, with the options for FASTBOOT/RECOVERY/CLEAR STORAGE/SIMLOCK?) is set to -REVOLUTIONARY-, HBOOT 6.93.1002. If that doesn't answer the question, how can I check if I have the CM7 hboot?
Thanks for the time, man. I appreciate you helping me understand how all this works! There was a time when I thought I was understanding the process. Then things stopped working. =p

take your time and read the guides i first linked you, and the one above to help with definitions.
minitool can go horribly wrong. clockworkmod recovery is also not very good at partitioning. gparted is always recommended.
you are currently on stock hboot because you haven't changed it. hboot just refers to the way all your internal memory partitions are laid out. in other words currently you have a 250MB system partition, but your cm7 rom system size is say 140MB (i.e. you're wasting 110MB)
when you change hboot to cm7r2, it has a 145MB system, so you waste say only 5MB. the extra reparitioned space becomes more internal memory (increases from 147MB to 287MB)
i say fastboot commands because that's just a method of actually changing your hboot.
so:
- use an app like titanium to backup all your apps. backup you contacts to gmail if you haven't already, use another app to backup sms if you need them too.
- backup your entire sd card to PC
- partition sd card, ~1gb ext4 should be enough, using the guide i linked.
- copy everything back to sd
- change hboot to cm7r2, search for guides (i recommend using fastboot commands)
- boot into recovery, nandroid backup
- full wipe and reinstall (you won't lose root or s-off)
- before you restore, install s2e or link2sd. select to move apps to sd-ext, keep app data and dalvik cache on internal (287MB should be enough space unless you have LOADS of apps), may need to reboot afterwards.
- restore everything else.
- i recommend to use another app like 'diskusage' to check all your partitions are working correctly.
seems like a faff, but this should have been the way to set it up in the first place
So, things went well, thanks to you guys.
I had already paritioned using minitool partition wizard. Gparted would NOT work for me, so I gave the minitool partition another shot. Installed the CM7 HBoot, wiped everything, reinstalled CM7 (since I was getting a bootloop problem), now everything seems to be running fine. Android detects 280mb of internal storage. I installed a 40mb app, transferred it to the SD card, and it's working beautifully. Im pretty darn happy with how things have turned out. Are there any other things I should verify, to make sure everything installed alright?
it wont boot coz u partitioned ur sdcard and changed hboots. so because u didnt do a backup u will have to flash the CM7 rom again. put CM7 rom on ur sdcard, boot into recovery, full wipe and flash the rom

gparted should always work if done correctly, what exactly would not work? if repartitioning using gparted, delete all existing partitions and start from scratch. as per guide, FAT32 should be first (on the left), ext4 partition second, both labelled as primary.
if minitool worked then you got lucky (many cases including myself in early days when it just screwed things up), i'd still recommend giving gparted another go.
when you say transferred to sd card, are you manually moving apps to sd using 'move to SD' within settings? if so then you're actually moving them to FAT32 partition of sd card, and not the ext4 partition...
follow what i said before, use an app (easiest) or script to move apps to sd-ext. if done correctly you shouldnt have to move any apps to sd, keeing them on should internal 'trick' them to sd-ext, it moves all of the app (and can move widgets too). and like i said, another app like 'diskusage' you can actually see your sd-ext filling up if setup correctly.
[you successfully changed hboots which is good! :victory:]

[Q] EXT-4 gone from sd after install of HTC Desire PARANOIDANDROID Woh 4.2.2

Hi There,
First off, this is my second time installing a custom ROM and I had someone else Root this phone but I used revolutionary to S-Off. I haven't installed a custom kernel and it's running clockworkmod 2.5.07.
I flashed and installed PARANOIDANDROID Woh 4.2.2 -------------------------------------->[v. 3.10b2/7th/March/2013] as per the instructions. Before starting I formatted the microsd card to 512mb of EXT4 with remaining 6.whatever Gig's of Fat32 (I used Minitool Partition Wizard on Win 7). Both were set as primary, while Fat32 was set to active, EXT4 was set to none (didn't think it made a difference?).
Everything installed fine, however, I first noticed issue when i went to run the terminal script for a2sd and it said it was read only (as attached). I tried to change permission to read/write and that didn't work. Then I realized after mounting USB storage connecting to Win 7 and opening Minitool Partition (because sd wouldn't show in My Computer) that all that was left on the micro sd was the FAT32 partition and nothing else.
So where do I go from here? I haven't added any Google account yet or did much else because there is only 14.65MB on internal now and I obviously can't send anything to sd and although I thought GAPPS went to sd in some form I guess not.
Can I recreate the EXT4 and push anything that was originally supposed to be on that partition onto it and then start installing apps there?... or do I need to repartition and reflash everything?
Also if I need to reflash, how can I ensure the same thing doesn't happen with the micro sd?
CWM wasn't formatting when I was trying to partition from Cyanogenmod 7 running Gingerbread (although then I read that CWM has bugs and could patition NAND and brick phone) so Minitool was my only sort of n00b option despite that I was having some issues but it seemed to be all fine before flashing 4.2.2.
Hopefully the attached photos will provide any further info you need to help.
Truly appreciate your help! This is my GF's Desire and I've been in the dog house playing with it all week (Cyanmod 7 was killing battery and was buggy, even stable version).
Thanks in advance once again!
** UPDATE ***
I just used my SD adapter directly into Win 7 and it's showing both partitions in Minitool and the Fat32 is available in My Computer showing music folders etc. However, the script for A2sd still never worked in Terminal Emulator saying "sh: can't create N: read-only file system"
So it appears the partition and the data is there and available but does the above message mean I can't send apps to the sd because it's read only?
Thanks again :S
Well one of your mistakes may have been using mini tool partition wizard. Many users have reported it's unreliability, and i've also had bad experiences with it in the past.
I would recommend using gparted to delete all partitions, and then using it to format the whole card to fat32.
Then install 4ext recovery instead of cwm, and use that create the ext4 partition.
If you need help on installing+using 4ext to create the sd-ext partition check out this guide
Finally do a full wipe, reflash the ROM, and activate a2sd through terminal emulator using:

Actually, I just ran your terminal codes above and that worked without reformatting or flashing!! It moved something like 94 or 96 apps and now shows 139 MB of internal storage!! Wow, I'm sooo excited. Imagine a n00b installing the latest version of Android on what is basically the original Android flagship HTC Desire/Nexus One!
BTW Should the developer maybe update with your script above vs the one listed which didn't work for me?
You guys rock!
I will start using GParted though and I assume using the liveimage USB would be best for me.
Now, I have to decide if I want to root my S3. I have 6 months left of my 1 year warranty so that's the only reason I've been debating it. Although most people say they've never heard Samsung not doing hardware repair just because a device is rooted. That sound about right?
Thanks Again!! So excited I'll end up using the old desire more than my S3!! lol

Despite the fact that it's working now, should I indeed start from scratch before she's gets too comfortable with this? Flash recommended recovery and reformat sd and reflash everything? (since I originally formatted with Minitool)
BTW it appears that when we install apps will they appear to initially go to internal but after reboot they move to sd, is this actually what is happening and we should always reboot after installs and updates? I just installed about 8 apps and the internal shows it's down to 39mb but then upon reboot it's back up to 76.46 (Originally at 139 but I assume it's all app data consuming it).
Do you recommend anything to occasionally clear app data to ensure there is always space?
For the S3 I would love it if you provided a link to root without tripping the flash counter! Gesh, I love Android more and more everyday (never an issue without solution)... this community rocks!

I just tried installing one more app ROM Toolbox (only 8.something MB) and it said insufficent space despite showing the above amount just before install. Before installing or updating anything when I realized the ext was still there, it showed I had 267MB available and I only just installed about 45mb worth of apps, likely updated about 40MB as well. So the ext4 shouldn't be full yet. Could this actually be because of the poor partition?
Ya all that stuff shouldn't be happening. I'm using the same ROM and have non of these issues, so its likely the ext partition.
Your best bet is to start again, and do what I said a couple posts up.
Which S3 variant do u have?

here you go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
I'm going to attempt this now. First question is that the 4ext instructions say to download the updater, put on sd card and install. Then they instruct you to partition from there. They list the alternative as GParted.
You're saying to use GParted first and then install 4ext to partition. I just want to be sure on this but also if I format first, where I already have apps on sd will this mess anything up not allowing recovery flash or anything?
I suppose once I format the sd based on the current a2sd rom that only recovery will function. Just want to be sure on steps.
Thanks!

Code:
su
a2sd install
y
n

i said to use gparted to delete all the partitions, then use 4ext to make the ext partition. But now that i think about it, its probably more efficient to use gparted to do everything. So just follow the gparted method in the guide.
I would recommend creating a 1gb ext4 partition and whatevers left fat32. Also theres no need to make a swap partition for this rom.
Its perfectly fine to format the card even with the apps on it. Again just to recap this is basically what you should do:
1. Use gparted to completely wipe all partitions on the card just for a clean start, then create the fat32 and ext4 partitions (use the guide)
2. Once the partitioning is done, put the rom + and gapps on the card (on the fat32 partition)
3. Put the sd into the phone, boot into recovery and choose wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, then go to advanced and wipe dalvik
4. Flash the rom and gapps
5. Once the rom is flashed reboot and give it a couple minutes to settle. Then run these commands in terminal:
Code:
su
a2sd install
y
n
y
6. From then on, all apps you install should automatically go to the ext partition. I'd also still recommend installing 4ext recovery...i find it better for the desire than cwm.

ya that should be fine. Just make sure you create the bootable usb properly by following the instructions from their site
Why go to the hassel of downloading and using gparted when u can just use 4ext recovery?? if u have a bad partition, 4ext will say ur partitions aint aligned properly or something then u just partition with 4ext recovery. sorted

he used minitool to partition the card which may have corrupted it. Wouldnt it be safer to start fresh using gparted to wipe all the partitions, so that he wont have any further issues in the future?

minitool just doesnt align it properly, just use 4ext recovery. so all he has to do is save whatever from the sdcard to pc then partition sdcard with 4ext and it will be done right. trust me, if he flashes 4ext recovery then in recovery, goto tools and check partition alignment and i bet it will say ur partitions are not aligned properly. i tried minitool ages ago to see what all the fuss was about it being sh1te and 4ext said that my partitions aint aligned so i re partitioned with 4ext and all was fine again.
Well this is welcoming because 4ext seems much easier for a n00b like me if it'll work just as well.
I was going to do a 2gb ext4 partition, is that okay versus 1gb?
Btw do you recommend any custom kernel with the desire in this rom? I noticed it is a bit laggy at times and sometimes requires a few taps before certain things activate. Maybe kernels are a little too advanced for me now though?
Or maybe some cpu tweaks or anything. I do own ROM toolbox.

Anything over 1.5gb for the ext partition is not recommended, so you probably shouldn't do 2gb.
The kernel that comes with the ROM is usually the best for the ROM, and theres not much you can do about the speed in jb roms. Ive tried the supercharger script but i honestly didnt notice any increase in speed. If your looking for a faster ROM use gingerbread.
Also dont mess around too much in rom toolbox if u dont know what your doing, you might get stuck in a boot loop and you will have to reflash the ROM.
All had worked out well and indeed the original minitool said the fat32 wasn't properly aligned. The only thing which keeps aborting is the calendar fix. I noticed chrominum's post about corrupted for our sd, redownload, check md5 and reflash. If doesn't work reformat sd, clear everything repartition and try again.
I did all that and same thing. It doesn't say why it won't work but just aborting per attached.
It did work for me previously in cwm. I only installed the last rc and not the testing version of 4ext.

We were posting at the same time. I'm starting all over again with 1.5g and we'll also see if that helps the calendar fix work.
Thanks!

[Q] Custom Rom -> Factory Reset ?

Hi there,
I got a custom Rom installed on my HTC desire, but now a year later it's getting a bit slow .. I would like to re-install this rom (believe it was MildWild 8.0 ) but whats the best way to do this ?
Can i just make a 'factory reset' from the CWM recory menu ? Or should i wipe everything and flash the Rom again ? Or maybe some other option ?
Thanks in Advance.
try wipe cache and dalvik in recovery then reboot.
maybe help .

You should try to work out why it might be slow in the first place.
Are you using an sd partition for A2SD? How did you create the partition? Any other scripts?
If you want to simply reinstall the ROM, you can:
- make a nandroid backup just in case
- flash the ROM.zip straight over the top, no wipe
This may clean things a little on your /system partition, and you shouldn't lose your apps.
If you "wipe data / factory reset" within cwm, and do nothing afterwards, this will wipe the ROM and it will not boot as you won't have any OS.
You can reflash the ROM.zip after "wipe data / factory reset", this is simply a full wipe and reinstall from scratch. Make sure you have a nandroid, backed up your contacts to google, and a titanium backup of your apps etc before you try this.

Despite this being repeated millions of times in xda, it rarely ever actually solves anything. cache is just temporary files. dalvik is required for apps to function. after you wipe it, it simply rebuilds, which is why it takes so long to boot afterwards...
In other words don't bother wiping dalvik...save yourself the time.
Thanks for the help.
It's probably getting slow because I run most apps via A2SD .. Cant really remember how i created the partition back then, it's more than a year ago now...don't think i use other scripts.
I don't use this phone that much anymore, but i wanted to have a backup phone in case my newer one gets broken or something, therefore i wanted to do a clean install on this one.
So if i flash the ROM straight over this one, without wiping, i still got al my personal data on the phone ?
Does a Nandroid backup also backs up the apps ? Cause when i reinstall this backup it probably gets slow again right ?
Is there a way to backup only the system settings from the ROM, so that when i do a full wipe , reinstall the same ROM again, i can restore the changes i made in this ROM ?
Thanks.

If you can't remember how you did it, then there's a chance you did it wrongly. It should be done with 4EXT recovery or gparted only, not clockworkmod recovery or minitool partition wizard. You mention clockworkmod recovery, so I assume you are also still S-ON?

To be honest, these are kind of basics you should know before you try anything with your phone A nandroid backup is a backup of everything. When you restore it, it should be exactly the same: apps, settings, texts, home screens etc.
You should be making a nandroid backup before you wipe / install anything unless you know exactly what you're doing, as it is a safe point to restore to if anything goes wrong. You can even move them off your sdcard to PC or cloud storage to save space and for safekeeping (normally stored in the /clockworkmod folder)
You can backup anything you like with apps like Titanium Backup. It is best used for your normal apps and app data. You can backup and restore /system apps and data, but this is very risky and I don't recommend it.
Personally I would recommend a full wipe and restore, setting everything up properly from the start as it should have been done in the first place. I'm assuming you're still S-ON:
- Install Titanium Backup, backup all your user apps and data (not system apps)
- Make sure your contacts are backed up to your Google account, backup SMS if you need to with another app
- Backup your whole sdcard to PC
- S-OFF with revolutionary
- Flash cm7r2 hboot using fastboot, this will optimise your actual internal memory more efficiently.
- Flash 4EXT recovery using fastboot
- Reformat your sdcard in 4EXT, partition with maximum 2GB ext4 partition, no swap
- Copy your sd card backup back
- Full wipe (wipe all partitions except sdcard)
- Flash ROM.zip
- Restore user apps + data with Titanium
Hey Eddie,
Thanks for you answer, really appreciate it.
I installed the custom rom on my phone more than a year ago, and back then i was really into it, now most of the details i forgot..
But it's S-OFF for sure, and i installed HBOOT also..i can't really remember how i formatted the SD card, is there a way to find that out ?
I will probably just install the same rom again, but first do a full wipe like you advised. Then it probably will work as smooth as it did in the beginning when i installed this ROM for the first time..
Do i need to reformat the SD-card again then, or is only a wipe enough?
Also, when installing apps, i now move them to SD card via the 'apps' menu -> move to SD , is that the right way to do it ? Or is there some other method ?

S-OFF means you unlocked the bootloader, it's a good start but nothing more. Explain 'installed HBOOT', did you already actually flash a different hboot? Write what is says on top of your bootloader screen. If it just says 'Alpharev', means you are actually still on stock hboot.

Reformat your sdcard from the start, do it the right way so you know you've done it the right way, rather than be uncertain...then follow instructions as above.
Roms like Mildwild have A2SD built in, you only need to keep apps on 'internal' to trick them to your sd-ext partition. 'Move to SD' is redundant, and moves part of the app to the FAT32 partition of your sd card. A2SD moves all of the app apk (and dalvik cache if you choose to), to the sd-ext which is where you want.
Other ROMs you need to activate A2SD manually, read the first post. Same rule still applies, don't use 'Move to SD', because if you do, you are not actually using your sd-ext partition...
Some ROMs like MildWild are also better installed on smaller hboots like cm7r2 to use your internal memory more efficiently (stock hboot is wasteful). Again instructions should be given in the first post of each ROM.

However i cant find any app called A2SD or is this a script that runs automatically ?
When i check the app 'freespace' it says : internal, microSD, Sd-ext, system.

Its a script so if your apps are on internal it will automatically trick them to move them to your sd ext which is the partition you have made which is 1gb recommended...

No, for the third time...
You think you already did it, and you have no idea how you did it...
Therefore: it is most likely is that you haven't done it, or you 've done it incorrectly.
If you've done it using clockworkmod recovery or minitool, they make bad partitions. It could be the exact reason you're having these slowdowns in the first place
You should do it with 4EXT recovery or gparted ONLY, nothing else. If neither sound familiar, then this increases your chances further that you have partitioned incorrectly...

Have a look again at freespace. You see all that free empty space on your /system partition? This is completely wasted redundant space.
You have exactly the same internal memory layout as before you rooted / S-OFF. With S-OFF you can change your actual internal memory layout by flashing a different hboot, see alpharev.nl.
By flashing a different hboot, you reduce your /system and /cache size -> and therefore increase your /data size (internal memory) = more space for apps :good: This is probably why you rooted in the first place...
So I believe you have narrowed it down to two choices:
- Keep full wiping...and never understand what you're doing...
- Follow the instructions and try to learn what you're doing and how your memory is actually being used Set everything up from scratch. It is the only way to guarantee you have a proper setup.
Up to you

Up to you

Ok Eddie, you got me convinced
Will follow your instructions , do a full whipe, re-partition it and perform a clean install like you mentioned in a couple of posts earlier .. thanks !

You're supposed to run all your user installed apps via A2SD, that's why you rooted and partitioned your sd card in the first place. Otherwise you run out of space again

Hi Eddy,
Finally I got the time to set up everything properly on my (new) Htc Desire, cause i lost my old one
Here is what i've done so far:
- Got it Rooted via the method advised here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275632
- Then I S-Offed with Revolutionary script, and installed CWM 5.0.2.0 .. not really what you advised me but i wanted to test if it was working, cause i had this recovery on my old phone also.
- Then I flashed cm7r2 hboot using Android Flasher. Could not get it to work via CMD->Fastboot on windows.
- Now i end up with a boot loop, only giving me the white HTC screen. When booting up in Hboot, it says:
AlphaRev CM7 r2
S-Off
HBoot-6.93.1002
I can enter CWM recovery, but it gives me some errors like 'E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log
And like i said: booting normally it ends up in a bootloop.
Did i do anything wrong, and what s the best way to move on now ?
Thanks in advance.

When u change hboot u have perform full wipe then reflash rom or restore nandroid backup. So in recovery wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache then reboot recovery then flash rom or restore nandroid backup if u have one.
Also ul prob need to partition ur sdcard for a2sd in roms so u must use 4ext recovery or gparted only. So again, flash 4ext recovery.

Ok thats clear, thanks for your reply.
I'd like to install 4Ext recovery, but it seems installing this recovery is done a little different from other recoveries right ?
Cause on their website it's done via an app frome the market..
Should i install a new rom first, then install 4Ext recovery ? Or can i flash 4Ext recovery from a zipfile in clockworkmod recovery ?

Go to desire general and ul see a thread by me "4ext recovery as PB99IMG" download and extract the file and flash the recovery.img via fastboot commands then once u have a rom installed u can download the 4ext app and update the recovery to latest version.

Thanks.
Installed it , and am trying to re-partition my SD-card (8 Gb) in the 4Ext recovery mode.
I followed this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2125513
Set 1st sd-ext partition to 2048 mb, skipped second, and skipped swap.
But then i get the message:
You new partiotion table would look like this:
Fat32: 5580 mb
SD-ext: 2048MB
Is that correct ? Shouldn't be all the memory on the SD-card partitioned to SD-ext ?

Okay thanks.
I thought that the whole SD-card would be partitioned as 4ext.
Is it true that A2SD now only uses the 4Ext partition (2gb) to trick apps to ?
Anyway, i'm happy to have my desire now set-up properly, so thanks for your help
I tried 2 Mildwild roms already, but didn't find a way to encrypt SD-card within these roms , does anybody knows if that's possible somehow ?
Any suggestions for other (Mildwild) Roms ? (tried MildWild MW-14 and MildWild CM-8.0 JG Stable)
Thanks.
