opening up my desire hd... - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

was hoping for a bit of help... the bottom left of my screen has come away from the phone slightly. I can push it back and it stick for about half a second then back to normal. not sticking out a lot but enough for dust and bits to get under the screen. I therefore want to open up the phone and see if i can fix it and clean away the gathered dust underneath.
has anyone done this before? if so i'd really appreciate some advice on how i go about it.i have insurance if it all goes t*ts up!
cheers

I know someone else recently asked about taking their DHD apart.
Some of these YouTube vids might help.

trust me you don't wanna do that it is so complicated that even jesus himself would send it to repair centre, lcd is glude to middel plate and middel plate is glued to tow boards it takes lot of nervs and skill to tear it apart and even more to put it all back together, don't do that or your dhd will suffer the same fate as mine(a very ''well-educated'' tehnician serviced mine he did the job almost as a butcher lol) don't do it take it to repair centre take my word for it

100% agree with you. Saw an 8 min video on it and it involves removing all the components in order to get to the lcd. was hoping it would a lot simpler. will contact htc and see if they can do anything with it otherwise i'll just get over it and hope ti doesnt get worse.
cheers

PLEASE don't take apart your Desire.
I took apart my HD2 to attempt a minor fix, even though I followed the leaked HTC HD2 disassembly video...I FU**ED up bigtime!
Even though at the time I was 100% confident at doing it and looked real easy...trust me....you end up like I did, by thinking "oh SH*T!! I wish I didn't do that!"
matt

haha yeah i've definitely lost a lot of confidence after seeing the video. best leave it for a pro...or just leave it
cheers

Dont try this at home...haha
Send it to service centre....

small bit of moisture under the screen....

I was just looking at my TP2 last night and noticed in the center of the screen it appears under the screen there is a tiny small bit of moisture.
It's not very noticeable, but enough to bother me.
can I take it apart and clean it? Does anyone know where there are instructions to take it apart?
The device wasn't released that long ago. I assume yours is still under warranty, so just bring it in for HTC to deal with. There's no reason for you to take the risk...

Moist screen would imply also having red moisture detection stickers.. Good luck!
Drop it in a pitcher of beer recently?
are you sure it is not Newton ring, mine had this and HTC tried to tell me that it was down to excessive pressure on the screen. This in my case was not true as never used it in my pocket only in its belt clip. After days of arguing with HTC they eventually agreed to repair it which meant a new phone as got sent one with a different imei no.
good luck anyway
I had mine in bits the other evening. i was in a rush otherwise I'd have taken some pics for the folks here..
It was far from the easiest phone to take apart, but its 'do-able' if you're really carefull!
Good luck however you deal with it.

It's not coming apart again unless I have to, sorry.
It wasn't the worst job in the world - get your torx drivers out!
If in fact it is water you can put it in a bowl of white rice and cover it for a day or so...should do the trick...Tj

Manufacturing Floor - Cracked Screen

Good Morning Guys and Girls,
Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same issue as me and how they got on.
I have had my phone exactly 3 weeks today I was using my phone and it was absolutly fine (no scratches/dents etc) put it face up on a table went had a showever when I came back there is a very large split in the screen perfectly straight (which would indicate manufacturing problem) going from top left corner half way down the phone to the right side.
I have spoken to HTC and they say its a chargeable fix as the warranty doesn't cover accidental damage but its not accidental damage! I have just phoned up my provider who said it would have to be sent back for them to determine whether it was accidental or not before sending out a new one but then they realised I actually got it through the carphone warehouse (as T-mobile direct were out of stock) and have now said I will have to take it to them as its their phone even though my contract was taken out with T-mobile direct.
This is a pain!
can you upload a photo?
Sure you had no impact before that? Or excessive pressure like in a pocket. Maybe it cracked later.
If not I don't know, maybe some faulty panel indeed that had a weak area that cracked due to thermal stress or something. In the lab it is probably easy to determine if it was cracked from the inside or due to external impact or torsion.
I have had a couple of light bumpbs but no damage/scratches after them and it was sitting all night on charge in my front room got up this morning picked it up used it for a minute (still fine) walked away came back 15 minutes later to find a crack. Noone had touched it.
Normally when I break a screen its a tiny crack and not normally in a perfect straight line. This one is 2.6" long
Pretty upset with this as its only 3 weeks old. I have had HD / HD2 / TD / TYTN etc and really abused them and I only end up with minor chips and scratches after about 10 months. Where as this one I have really tried to look after it
Also to add I never put my phone in my back pocket wher eI can sit on it.
It never shares a pockets with coins / keys or anything else that can damage it
And I will try and get a photo of it somehow - only cam I have at the moment is on the phone so don't think I can use that
Heres a picture, you can see where the light is reflecting is roughly the start point of the crack and it goes out both ways. I just don't see how a crack like this can form on its own sitting face up on a table.
That really sucks man.
I am going to get a hard cover for my phone. Don't want a cracked screen.
Having a look at your picture though - there doesn't seem to be a pressure point of impact etc. So what you're saying looks to be correct.
Hope you get it sorted.
I know thats what is frustrating me. Everyone telling me its accidental damage and I know I am not lieing, I have broken screens in the past and seen many more and I know how accidental damage looks you normally have a point of inpact as you say, its normally small or if it is big normally has multiple fractors no just one long steady line.
Yes, exactly.
However - you're going to have a hard time proving this to any retailer. As they normally have a very strict policy on warranty claims.
I'll get my way I have a nack of getting things I want from shops and businesses
I am hoping like the guy said at T-mobile as its only 3 weeks they might just do a handset swap rather than fixing it.
Anyone by any chance know how much it is to get a screen replaced?
Done some research for you - you're looking at 70 + pounds to replace it.
Thanks. Hmmmm thats quite a bit that I don't really have. Just hope I can get them to accept it as warranty. Might have to visit all stores in Sussex until one agrees to repair it lol.
Well it is even more, if you didn't actually cause the crack on the screen!
Hoping my Desire doesn't suffer the same fate as yours!
Good luck. My advice is do not put it on a table and walk away!
Ill post here how I get on.
I will be sure to keep a constant look on it, while I leave it on the table. Will test later if the same situation arises when leaving it on a chair.
Jokes aside: mine fell twice already. Once it was after a week I had it, it landed from about 1 meter high, 50cm far away after it slipped from my hand when picking it up from ... a table ! (I see a pattern, the desire doesn't like tables). Landed and rolled on my polished floor and I still can't see no visual damage. From that day on, I grip it so firmly, that it almost behaves like an iphone4
Second time it was from about 30cm and obviously no damage.
I had it for about 2-3 months and -knock wood- screen is ok.
It does look as a factory defect.
Is ur handset not insured either mobile phone insurance or as it happened in your house - your house insurance

Well, don't know how the law is over there with you. But here in the Netherlands (and I thought it was EU, but not sure). Within a certain period of time the seller of the device is the one that should prove it wasn't used properly etc.
So.. they can say whatever they want about it being accidental damage. But at least here in this country, it's not up to you to prove otherwise. THEY have to prove you mistreated the device.
Your screen cracks without mistreating the device, sounds like a proper warranty claim to me!
It could be there has always been some tension on the screen, and when it got hot or cold it finally cracked. Who knows. I'd say let them prove you mistreated the device.
i work for carphone warehouse mate i wouldnt no what to do really say some thing elswe is wrong with it like crashing or some thing. depends on how noticeable try putting a cheap screen protector on it and see if it cant been seen then take it back LOL gimme a message if you want any more info =]
Don't CPW give you 3 months insurance for free as a come on?
That's nasty. I dropped mine from 30cm onto a wooden floor and the battery cover flew off and it sticks up in one corner now so had to bend it back to shape!
Good luck getting it sorted out.

[Q]Dropped phone, broken glass, now what? (picture inside)

Hello sweet sweet XDA members,
I've dropped my phone flat on the screen. It didn't even jump around once it hit the ground, it just lay there... and when I turned it around, I saw something that broke my heart.
[Look at the picture now]
Now... everything works great... it seems that just the glass is broken...
I've seen a very advanced manual of how to replace a screen, with like a thousand pictures... I've also had contact with a shop near me, and they said they'd replace it for 100 euro's...
I just can't imagine that a little piece of glass would cost a lot... but I have no idea what that part of the phone is called, so I can't really do a proper search.
My question: what would you advice me?
I think that must be the digitizer...But dude, you just made me sad...Poor Desire...
Yeah, imagine how I feel! :-(
And I just installed DeFrost last week... so it kicked ass again!
It still works though... it's just really ugly now, and I have to be uber extra carefull with everything I do (plus the surface of the screen isn't smooth anymore...)
you can search ebay for digitizer. and then change it by yourself
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768535
Changing is really easy, there is a picture tutorial somewhere on the internet. Just disassemble your desire and use a hairdryer to heat front and the glass. Then change the screens en reassemble.
You can change it yourself, get the shop you mentioned to change it or get HTC to change it they might charge they might not.

Shattered Desire Screen, T-Mobile UK/ Warranty ??

Hello All,
I have the HTC Desire, last night it fell out of my pocket face down. The screen shattered from the drop. The touch screen repsoniveness seems the same. Just waondering is this covered by T-Mobile UK or HTC warrant. It's been about 10 months since I had the phone. If so, how can I go about getting phone replaced.
If it is not covered how much is it likely to cost get screen replaced and how do I go about this.
Thanks
Don't think warranty covers screen damage, that would be an insurance job
Thanks for your prompt reply. I don't have insurance. Do you have any idea how much it might cost to get screen replaced and where I can go to get this done. Do HTC provide a repair service?
Haven't a clue! It's why I have my phone on my home/contents insurance

Eddy is right don't forget that home/contents insurance should cover accidental damage to your phone. Warranty will in no way cover your phone i'm afraid as this will only cover inherent problems with the phone eg Microphone stops working for no reason etc. You could try going to HTC directly as they may have a service center somehere in your area (you never know til you try) a slight warning though that this can be quite a costly process to get done by HTC - there is a number to call here for you http://service.europe.htc.com/Wizard.aspx?pageid=0
also found this place through google http://www.htcrepairs.co.uk/htc_rep...el=&phone=&name=&network=Network&title=repair no idea how reputable they are so might want to check them out first . Won't hurt to ask for a quote though - But if it seems really really cheap then it may not be a good deal so be careful
Well, what probably is broken is the digitizer. You can fix this yourself for about 30 euro.
Atleast, that's what I did...
Never done such a thing in my life before, and I was kinda scared... but it turned out to be a really cool job and not that difficult!
I'm trying to find my topic, but search is down atm... When you see this post, go to my account and see for a topic I started or one I replied in recently... it's probably about the same problem with a photo of my phone back then...

@ZasXxSAz: Thanks, will search for your post. How can I tell if it's just the digitizer or the other screen. I read there are two screens ? The screen seems to be available for aboput £30, the assembly is the hard bit. If you say its as easy as you say it is I may just check it out.
Thanks guys.
Keep the help coming.
Thanks, I have e-mailed HTC last night. Will see what they say regarding repiar service.
Will check out the other website also.
Edit: I just checked out the htc reapirs website, I live in London, they are based in Wimbledom and aslo have a walk in service. Will email them and see if I can get a quote.
Best way just to check first as HTC can be expensive from what iv'e heard but the other place may well try ripping off as the desire is expensive.
It does indeed sound like a digitizer that is broken rather than the lcd (armoled) screen as they tend to bleed or not work at all -- think broken calculator screen and that's what you would get -- basicly the digitizer is the screen that you touch the lcd armoled is what is underneath it .. so if it is just the digitizer don't press the screen too hard incase a piece breaks off and goes through that too

Dropped in water - was working well for few hours and then went black - please help!!

My son dropped his Oneplus 3 in water, took it out immediately and dried it. Phone was working well for few hours, then it had some screen rotation issue and when he tried to reboot it, it went black. When he got home, he dried it and then put it in Rice for four days. No luck.
Now when I charge the phone, it gets warm, so power is going in but the screen is black. I tried the Volume up and power button simultaneously, but to no avail. The screen remains totally black.
Not sure if I have to take to the repair guy at the mall to replace some parts or should I trying something else before doing that.
Please advise and provide guidance.:crying:
Thanks in advance.
Ric.
Its probably dead.
I mean, you can try the Mega Unbrick Guide but thats definetly not the case we have here.
Get it repaired as fast as possible over One Plus Support.
Shouldn't have used the phone and put into rice straight away. Probably the display connector accumulated rust and maybe service centre can fix it easily, MAYBE... In most cases some part of motherboard may be shorted, which would cost a lot to fix
Don't know if I can use unbrick guide... PC doesn't recognize the device!!

Contacted Oneplus support, they mentioned that it may cost around $175 for the repair but they have to look at it first. I may be better off getting a new device.

Wouldn't call it a bad price.. I mean for he S7 you already pay 400 bucks because you dropped your Phone once, try to open it up and see if the contact points are messed up, JerryRigEverything has a nice video.
Thanks Puddi_Puddin..viewed the video
Thanks Puddi_Puddin,
I took a look at the taking apart video on youtube. I was able to remove the screws with the appropriate screwdriver but to remove the screen, I think I may have to buy the JerryRigEverything Metal Pry Tool from Amazon. Any other alternatives?
I assume the water damage indicator would have changed color. What should I look out with regards to contact points? Anything else that I should look out for?
Thanks for the input and appreciate it.
Ric
If i did that to my own oneplus 3, my dad won't be getting me another phone that's for sure. And he will well pissed off, 400 dollars gone down the drain. He'll probably make me pay for it and if i wanted a phone, i will have to buy myself one. In your case, maybe not get him a phone so he will appreciate it more. You might as well get a phone with water resistance. I had to wait 5 years to get my own phone. My oneplus 3 was my first ever phone and i got it last year.
Well, for the replacement he is going to pay from his summer job.
For the replacement he is going to pay from his summer job.
I trying to salvage the OP3 so that I can use it as my backup or secondary phone.
Thanks

Well every thin piece of metal should do, as long as you are careful. You want to watch out for the screen tho. And switch to something like paper ASAP.
