Warranty Still Good? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My sister recently ditched her Droid Incredible in favor of a Iphone 4. (blasphemy I know) The reason being, The power/sleep button no longer works. Since she no longer needed the Incredible, she gave it to me! I've been enjoying having a Android device to play around with but the lack of the power button has been killing me. I have not turned the phone off in over a month and have to use a tweak that wakes the device with the trackpad/volume buttons. Now here is the question. She had a warranty on her Incredible that goes up on the 25th of this month. Can she still replace her old Incredible even though she is Using a white Iphone 4? By the way, She wasn't scheduled for an upgrade to get the Iphone, instead she stole the upgrade from my brothers line and somehow applied it to her line. Just putting that out there in case it helps. I'd like to have her phone replaced so i can start rooting the device and flashing custom ROMS to it. I am also learning Java so I can develop for Android, thus, I really need a future proof Android device that won't conk out on me for testing any apps that I plan on making. Thanks for any help!

Take it in, the worst that can happen is they say no.

As in take it in to a store? I was hoping we could just mail it in. Our last experience with the goobers at the verizon store was not enjoyable at all. They are usually noobs who only know how to do a factory reset...

Or call support then. If the warranty's still good, then they'll probably just send out a CLNR replacement.

Just got my 2nd refurb from verizon 3 days ago.

Called Verizon about an hour ago... They gave me a number for HTC, and than HTC gave me another number for their warranty and repair shop. Which won't be open until Monday. So I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens....
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App

Doesn't sound like you are getting a warranty replacement. Sounds more like a warranty repair you're going to have to pay for but I've never called in for warranty personally.

call verizon and if the warranty is still good they usually will next day you a phone

[Q] Past 30-days, but should I ask for a replacement?

So I notice the screen lifting up on the bottom left corner of my phone, and I can feel it moving around when I push on the corners. It's starting to concern me, and well... it shouldn't be happening; I don't appreciate paying for something that seems like it's going to fall apart.
Apparently this is a common problem... which is weird since people give Samsung so much crap.
Anyhoo... I'm past my 30 days (they ran out at the beginning of the month, new Sprint customer as of early Feb '11) what would happen if I took this back to Sprint's store? Would they just give me a new one, or make me go through HTC?
Hardware version 0003.
They should give you a refurb, as you still have warranty for 1 year for hardware defect just like that. Take it to the store-unrooted and all rooting files removed, and you should be fine.

Basically the only thing I'm concerned about is having to send my phone into HTC and having to wait to get one sent to me. You think they'll just switch it out in the store?

Yea, they should just switch it out in the store. or worst case if they don't have one in stock, they'd order a refurb and you'd have it in a day or two, but you won't need to send it to HTC.
Maybe I'll just deal with it.
The problem I have is... I wouldn't accept a refurbished phone. It's just a pet peeve... I paid for a new phone, I want a new phone. I don't like the idea of buying a new one that's defective somehow and getting given a refurbished phone as a replacement. It might not bother some, but I'm just anal like that.
Then again... I haven't talked to Sprint about it, so maybe they would give me a new one.
EDIT: I'll un-root and flash back to stock tomorrow then take it to Sprint on Monday and see what happens.

I got a HTC hero that was a referb, worried that the phone was trash I kept waiting for it to go bad. It never did, in fact I sold it on eBay some time later. Refurbs are hit and miss, you will know within a few days if its a keeper. If not raise hell and get another one!

Bad touchscreen

Ever since I purchased my evo I have had strange touchscreen issues. Ie.. it will start pressing buttons or long press all by itself. At first I thought it was the rom I was running but later found out that every rom I have ran does it. Now I'm sure everyone is going to tell me to just replace the phone but I don't really have the money to do that right now. Just wanted to see if there has been any other evo owners that have run into this and if they had any suggestions. Thanks.

I had a similar problem with my HTC HD2 back in the day and it turned out to be a hardware problem. I took it back to the store where they confirmed it and replaced my device right there. If you rooted your phone and have a custom rom installed on it right now....unroot it and put the stock rom back on it and take it back to the store where they'll be able to give you a brand new one for free! Things like this aren't your fault and so they shouldn't charge you at all!
As mentioned, Sprint should replace the phone free of charge - especially if you have insurance. Be sure to take it to a true Sprint store and not just a store that sells Sprint stuff. Without insurance, it may cost you $35, more, or absolutely nothing.
Just be sure to unroot first, as Sprint may void your warranty or refuse to replace it if they see that it's rooted (and since the issue is with the screen, they will). If you used unrevoked to root, remember to flash the s-on tool in recovery before running the RUU. Also double check that you're s-on before taking it in.
Good luck!
Thanks for the responses. I do have insurance but the quirk is that I purchased the phone second hand from an acquaintance. The screen issue happened so minimally that it didn't really bother me until late. Now its happening more often. I guess I'm gonna have to suck it up, lose it in the bathroom at my local pub and fork out the deposit for replacement. Thanks again.

My stepmom bought her BB Curve on ebay. She has insurance, it went funky on her & they replaced it for free.
She's a customer service rep's worst nightmare, though.
I dont think it matters where you got your phone if you have TEP....

[Q] Returning htc evo to sprint help

Ok so im having the loose usb port problem with my phone and im going to be sending it in for warranty exchange. One thing is i rooted my phone and the S-off shows up if you look. Also i never installed custom roms or anything so it looks like a normal evo if you flip through the menus and stuff. Superuser is also gone and no root apps or anything is on the phone just that it shows s-off if you look. So will sprint look for the s-off when i ship it back to them a charge me or anything?? im also running the OTA 2.3.3

Different stores have different standards for root. My store here in knoxville told me, of course after I've unrooted sadly enough, that they do not check for s on. They only look to see if you have a custom Rom. And especially if it is a hardware, the rep told me they don't normally care either way. If it is software related, they will not work on a device running a custom Rom.

I'm curious as to why you are sending it? Going to the store is easier. And also, if they don't fix rooted devices, all they can do is tell you no and send you away.
But personally I don't think they will check. Especially because your issue seems to be a major hardware issue.

I also have had bad experiences at Sprint stores. They all seem to treat you like you're dumb, but soemtimes you get lucky and get to speak with a nice respectful rep.
Here is what I would say/do.
First, do you have insurance? That is very important.
If you do, try this. But proceed with caution.
Take your micro usb cord and really jam up your slot. Like, really bend the attachment piece out of place.
Go in and tell the rep that your device does not charge properly and really needs repair or replaced. Ask nicely. I'm sure those peeps deal with jerks all day long. Prolly why they dish back out to some of us nice folks.
Show the repair tech the damage.
If you have insurance they will be more than happy to help you.
If you don't have insurance please please please do not take this route!!!

Oh.......
Here is the deal. I've asked several different sprint reps about this over the phone as well as in the store.
Once you purhase your Evo, sprint gives you a 30 day warranty. Within 30 days, you are eligible to return phone, trade phones, or replace phone with a brand new one if there are manufacture defects.
After 30 days, your Sprint purchase warranty ends. But HTC also has a warranty. It is a one year limited warranty. It is mainly for defects and other various issues. Basically, you send your phone ($6 shipping handling) to HTC and they diagnose it. If it is manufacture defect, they either repair or send you a refurbished device without charge. If they decide it is user error or you damaged phone, they call or email you to inform you that you have two options. A. pay full price for repair and shipping back home. B. Pay 35$ fee to get phone back unrepaired.
The deal is this. Sprint offers you the service and guarantees you service and only the service. Your device was not made by sprint but by HTC, and being so, issues must be dealt with through HTC...unless you purchase insurance.
This is my advice to you. Call sprint. Ask them about insurance. It is $7 a month. Ask them how soon it takes affect after you purchase it. Usually is immediate. Then, in the next week or so, go to sprint store. Now you have insurance and they will deal with you and repair your phone right there and then. And if you want, later after your device is fixed, you cancel insurance.

[Q] warranty replacemen - which phone will i get?

hey there,
I had my evo replaced under warranty about 3-4 months ago and opted in to the insurance at that time. since i got it, the camera has been flaky -- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
My question: If I take the phone in to be replaced, will I get an evo 4g back or a different phone since they are at end of life?
I am ready to go ape**** for a new phone (instead of refurb) as I told them I really didn't want a refurb last time and its had camera problem, the front screen has always had light shining up out of the corners, etc.
would love it if they bumped me to a 3d since they will be getting ice cream sandwich.
thanks.
I've heard that all replacements are 3D's from here on.
You may get real lucky....but I doubt it. I just had my OG EVO stolen in DC right out of my work truck on Wednesday and Sprint put me through to Asurion. Asurion sent me a 0003 refurbished (really fast BTW) and its been bootlooping all weekend when I never had one issue with my 0002. I called them and they sent me another which is waiting for me @ home as we speak. I guess what I'm trying to say is, since your EVO is defective, they might swap it @ store but will prob be a refurb. Good luck.
via EVO.
They may not have any more new og evo. They have a crap load if refurbished ones. So unless they room out of refurbished, you wouldn't get a 3vo unless you are lucky.
You need to have it replaced 4 times in 6 months to get a different phone. they still have plenty of Evo4G's. They even have Heros left still.
Yeah we just did an insurance claim for my wifes evo last week. She got another EVO. She had the white one and got a black one this time. With as many evos that have been sold and sent in for insurance claim, I'm sure they will have plenty to go around for quite a while
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
You will get a refurb evo, they have plenty of them. You will not get an evo 3d, the two phones are way different to be offering them as a replacement.
You guys are totally wrong. I checked on Asurion today, and the website said that the replacement for my EVO would be a 3D. I'm not switching, but you can get a 3D if you're lucky.

It is a definitive upgrade. MP count may be lower but I've seen comparisons with the 3D offering better pics.
The only reason it wouldn't be considered an "equal replacement" is because its actually an upgrade.

When you check it online, does it tell you what kind of replacement you'll be getting before they lock you in? for example, if it says I'd be getting an OG, do I have 30 days to complete the claim, or is it an incomplete claim? Can I just keep checking it until it says 3vo? Also, what happened to billing the deductible to my account? Back in the day they would allow the deductible to be billed, but now they only take it direct over the phone.

No, it doesn't tell you. You can call Asurion and ask, but again, they have plenty of OG evo's last time I checked. And no, you cannot just "keep checking" until they give you a 3d. Insurance is NOT an upgrade program, it's a replacement program.

Last week on Wednesday i lost my white OG EVO, went through Asurion online and filed a claim, 12 hours later i got a new 0004 black OG EVO even though in the email notification i got it said that my order was going to take couple of days because my phone wasnt in stock.
Both my father in law and my wife got their OG Evos replaced with 3D's. I was going to claim insurance also and was told by asurion that i would be getting a 3d. I dont know why they are giving them to some and not others.
You can start a claim online and it will tell what they are replacing your phone with. If its not a 3d then just exit and nothing happens.

Nothing you can do about it now, your warranty is over and you can only add insurance during the first 30 days of the phone. Every once in a while Sprint/Asuiron will do an open enrollment, allowing anyone to get insurance, but I believe they just had one a few months ago, so probably not again for a while.
Edit: actually, since you cant get it replaced, have you tried a factory reset?

[Q] Camera with purple fringing - ok to send to HTC for repair with S-off/root?

Hi guys,
So my trusty M7 finally started exhibiting the infamous purple fringing camera defect after close to two years. I thought I got lucky and got one of the original good ones, oh well. I've been busy with school and unfortunately haven't had chance to keep up with the M7 xda developments since I did S-off and root with the original exploit. I've been running the stock verizon ROM - never updated (blocked OTA update) because I need foxFi and I thought the more recent updates (kitkat) killed or crippled tether/foxFi operation.
Two questions:
1. I'd like to have send my phone to HTC to repair the camera module. A friend who did the same last fall had his phone updated to kikat and the latest official ROM. However, his was completely stock when sent in (no s-off or root, stock recovery). Is it wise for me to send in the phone as is to HTC? If not, what steps should I take?
2. I'd like to keep my existing ROM for the sole purpose of keeping FoxFi/tethering fully operational and trouble-free. Am I being completely nonsensical - do the more recent Android builds (kitkat and beyond) from Verizon really kill FoxFi/tethering?
Ideally, I'd love to have the camera repaired and keep my S-off/root status. Is this possible with sending back to HTC?
I did a search on the topic but didn't find an exact answer. If I missed it, I apologize in advance. Trying to finish grad school, and unfortunately just don't have as much free time to keep up with all the cool stuff at XDA as I used to be
I don't have any answer for you, but would like to know myself. The purple tint is the only reason I'm considering getting rid of my M7 soon.
Return to stock and lock/s-on. HTC may give you a different device, they may change the board out. If you send it in stock with s-off, it may invalidate the warranty on a worst case. If they honor the warranty, they will run their ruu and turn s-on anyway,, so just save yourself the trouble and do it yourself to avoid invalidating the warranty.
Edit: when you get your phone back, you can s-off with Sunshine and then use the old ruu's to return your phone to the old stock Rom and firmware.

My roommate sent his phone in for HTC to repair it. The CSR said for him to send it in and if they deem the camera issue is due to H/W malfunction they would repair it at no cost. He sent it in and it took over a month for him to get contact from HTC on whats going on with his device. He tried online chat, email, phone calls, and no one could give him an answer about whats going on. Another month goes by and he gets tired of waiting so he went onto his claim ticket and checked the box saying "just return my device". This is when he started to get emails, lots of emails, that they want him to pay $250 for the repair because it is out of warranty. I had him do another online chat with HTC and tell them, on htc twitter account they posted a tweet (that is no longer available) that the fix they had for the camera was software and that it WILL fix the purple hue issue. After about an hour or so the CSR wouldnt confirm HTC would fix the device so he requested for it to come back, as is and he would get just go insurance route. Another month passes and a box showed up from htc. It was his phone, or we thought it was. He hurried up and activated it and proceed to see if they fixed the issue. Once logging the IMIE into sprint site, it came back saying the phone was a Black HTC One m7 (the device is grey). Not a big deal, and we didnt think anything of it and tried out the camera. Camera worked great, and still does but now he is seeing the screen lifting off as if they forgot to glue it back down. you can almost separate the screen from the body with a finger nail or guitar pic. HTC wont offer to repair it because in the system it shows he declined the repair and wanted the device back. (they had to do something to the device because the IMIE is for a black phone not a grey one)
now i have the purple hue issue on my phone. I dont have a back up to let them have for 3 months as they figure out what parts they can pull to put into it. so i wont be dealing with their repair center. to much hassle to maybe get the phone fixed.
@synisterwolf
I find it VERY hard to believe in your story. (Trying my best not to sound negative... lol) Because I was one of the first people people to get the M7 and I got the Purple Hue as well. From the day I sent me phone, to the time it came back repaired at my doorstep... it was about 10 days. Including shipping. My HTC rep online was so helpful and helped me send it in with ease.

When did you send it in? Everyone has different experiences. If you read up in the international One section, you would see his story isn't too far fetched. If you used an unlock token or sent it in s-off and/or unlocked, they can in fact deny warranty claim and try to charge you for a new motherboard. (That is where the $250 charge would come from).

Well,, if you sent in shortly after the m7 was realised, HTC said up and down it was software for quite awhile. You must have sent it in after they admitted it was hardware.

it was easy because it was in warranty. Mine and my roommates are both out of warranty. Even though HTC did say they would fix because they acknowledged it was in fact hardware related. I was like pulling teeth to get it done. I understand they will be fast for warrantys but the could care less if you are out of the 1 year range.
My roommates phone was never S-off or dev unlocked. he still has it 100% stock (which is weird to me) and HTC still did what they did. I guess you need to catch the right CSR on the right day or you could end up like he did. I'm not trying to persuade you not to do so. i just wanted to share the experience he had. When i couldnt get HTC to tell me they would without a doubt fix mine for free i gave up. I do have bestbuys insurance and i get a NEW device if i pay the 150 delectable. So i might wait till the last month i have on contract and pay the delectable and get the new device.
Appreciate the feedback. I haven't contacted HTC yet. My phone is obviously out of warranty (got it aug 2013 I think), though I was banking on HTC taking care of the repair for free since it was a hardware defect. I don't have access to a backup phone, and at this point, I am starting to think it's not worth the trouble to send it in :-/
This is a bummer... I really like the M7.

synisterwolf and uzephi thanks guys for the input! Got the PM uzephi. I'll definitely give this a shot whenever I do upgrade, although that might not be until August or September. The M7 is still pretty sweet even now, despite the camera issue. Honestly, if I could put in a new battery, I can see myself using the M7 as my main device for at least another year if not more.
Going on a tangent here, but it looks like I may have to with the mixed reviews of the M9 so far. I am guessing Qualcomm really messed up with 810 this time around...
