Hello,
My HTC Desire HD will go for repair and i'm sure it has no water damage, but in HTC agreement thats one off terms which will not be under the warranty.
So I want to know where to find the water damage indicators, so I can verify there is no water damage, so I also would like know how you can see that.
On a dutch consument program there has been theme once that repair centers give phones water damages even if they not have it.

Hi all my girlfriend has(had) a DHD and it developed a problem where it wouldn't charge and couldn't even turn on with power cable plugged in. (flashing green indicator light)
Anyway she sent this obviously faulty phone off the htc and after a week got a phone call saying that the phone has water damage and they will do noting for her. When she rang them up they told her would she like them to dispose of it for her (WTF?) anyway she said that there is no way she could have damaged it with water and they said they will send proof that it has water damage (still waiting for this)
I'm guessing they are going to show a picture where one of those moisture stickers have changed colour and state that this means it has been damaged by water. I would be very interested to know if any of your phone water damage stickers have changed colour?
I have had a touch pro 2 and touch hd and I'm pretty sure one of them showed the moisture sticker had changed even though I had never got it wet and it worked fine for the year or so I had them.
Does anyone have any advice on forcing HTC to honour their warranty?
(oh she was told on the phone that a single drop of rain could cause this to happen !?! A phone that breaks after being hit by a single drop of rain doesn't sound like it is fit for purpose to me, what do you think?)
:=)
good luck (hope this works out positive for you both).
to the single drop of water: hope it doesnt. ;=) but with really bad luck, maybe possible on such a high end device. -> good luck once again
owned a defy before this, so hopefully i dont forget its not a defy anymore
btw. if u dont want a fragile phone, get a defy, if u wanna flash everything, stay with htc ;=) (bricked my defy :=/ on flashing)
I think your probably on to a lost cause with this, HTC are going to claim that as the stickers have changed colour it has been water damaged and refuse to honour any warranty claim.
If you are adamant that it has not been in contact with water, an option maybe to get an independent electrical engineer to assess the device and produce a report showing it has not been water damaged, which you could then use to force HTC to honour the warranty, the drawback with this is how sure are you of the source you purchased the DHD from? is it possible it had been exposed to water before you received it?
I don't know where I read this but apparently others have had this happen. The little sticker that indicates water damage can and does sometimes change color without direct contact with water.
I tried to Google but could not find it though sorry.

My speaker and mic stopped working, I was in the shower and some water got on the screen, but it didnt seem like it went in. The two water damage indicators are fine, no sign of water damage.
I called and they are sending me a refurbished phone, but said if they detect any water damage they will charge me with $300. I have insurance, but it will cost $100 for a new phone, but if the phone is malfunctioning because of something else I don't want to pay $100.
There is what looks like rust on the right side of the sim card. Can anyone identify it for me?
the water damage indicator should be this little white sticker behind your battery. The thing in the image just looks like dirt to be honest, you could always use some cyber clean to clean the thing up.
make sure to check the little round white water damage sticker behind your battery. if it is white its ok. if it is red, then you're dead.
The normal indicators are white with pink x's on them which is normal. Its not dirt though. How extensively do they check the phone?
There's also one inside the phone, just below the camera. Not that I've ever seen it

Hi all,
So was very happy with my Nexus until I had the battery indicator/ charging issue noted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21029770#post21029770
So went down to Vodafone store (general ball ache as it is ~15 miles away, had to take morning off work, also they had no loaner phones!) they sent it off for repair getting me to sign to say if water damage I would have to pay.
So they have sent it off now I get a call saying the water damage indicators say it is a water damage issue. I have never got the phone wet or suffered any form of water damage. That being said it hasn't been in a waterproof bag its whole life.
I'm pretty pissed as they want £100 for repair, which I refuse to pay. I could repair it myself but I don't think I should have to as its only 6 months old. 2 questions really:
1) has anyone else had this issue with water indicators when no water damage?
2) Is there any way to argue that water damage isn't even a little bit of a factor here as it wasn't water damaged and is likely a physical issue with the actual USB slot?
I may well be buying an HTC one x as a friend said he had the same issue with his SII and I'm generally not all that impressed with Samsung build quality.
Cheers y'all
The water damage indicators is not very reliable. Demand that they provide other proof that the stickers. If water have damaged the USB port then it clearly should be visible proof of this on the port.
Also let them read this: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23789 Samsung should be painfully aware of this issue and their flake USB port.
So you signed an agreement to pay the repair costs if there was water damage. The phone does have water damage and you refuse to pay? Interesting...
Unfortunately those indicators can change color just from having the phone in the bathroom while taking a shower.

The steam can also cause actual water damage
Still, water indicators do tend to get set off all the time without having any actual damage done. They're very unreliable and are only present to give companies an easy way out of warranties as they're designed to go off very easily (your sweat can set them off if handled enough).

They won't take the phone to the repair centre unless you sign the repair agreement. I don't have to pay anything unless I want the phone fixed but I refuse to pay £100 for £5 worth of parts and a trained monkey jamming it in. Especially as the Samsung Repair Centre charges £40 for the same job.
I would happily pay if there had been an actual liquid damage incident but I refuse to be screwed over not sealing up my phone in a vacuum on a humid day.
All of this is on top of the fact that the I have had the phone for 6 months and it has broke due to shoddy build quality.

there is more than 1 indicator on every phone. there's usually 2, most of the time 3.
have them take pictures of all of them.
I bought my watch with insurance, and this shop i think tries to scam me now
my watch wasn't working and i brought it back to them to fix it but then they told me its water damage
I never had it inside water, the only water that got close to it was my sweet
So i told then i need more prof and they gave me this pictures (sorry needed to take it from the screen they didn't wanted to send it to me)

Yeah dude, that looks like classic water damage to me. Water damage can also cause things to burn, source: i watch enough louis rossmann on youtube repairing water damaged macbook motherboards
Hi how old is the watch , maybe check with Huawei direct, as it does look strange to me as I would expect damage through out the unit from water ingress instead of it being so localised as here.
There also does not appear to be any signs of damage to watch where the seal should sit either, so strongly suggest you pursue this with the Manufacture even if outside of standard 12 months warranty as this may have been a manufacturing defect which has contributed to this failure.

Told by LG Canada my phone had warranty coverage specifically for the bootlooping issue, and sent it to FutureTel in Ontario for what should have been a free repair (hell, I should have it back by now).
FutureTel dings me back with a $450 repair quote saying the warranty status is denied because of 'corrosion'. I had them to forward me the photo above.
What? No. I'm the kind of person that keeps my phone is a ****ing ziploc baggie outside of the home - there is no way this phone saw any moisture outside of what is normally in room air. No steamy bathrooms even. I photographed the moisture indicator being white and untouched, immediately prior to sending it in.
1. how does corrosion occur without moisture stickers showing moisture?
2. can corrosion not occur for reasons other than user damage/exposure to external moisture? Don't batteries leak sometimes? I've found corrosion inside electronics remote controllers on the contacts for the AA batteries and that had nothing to do with user damage or external moisture.
3. Isn't corrosion on the opposite end of the motherboard from the CPU (the photo is showing near the usb port) very unlikely to be causing bootloops where the phone shuts down due to processing stress of booting up the OS?
4. they repair the bootloops under warranty by replacing the entire motherboard anyways. I feel like this is them refusing to repair my car's engine because they found a bit of rust near the gas cap. are they just trying to weasel money out of me for what should be a free repair?
5. arggg
that's the problem, your board could get moisture from your washed hands, sweat, trapped moisture between a case,
I had the same thing happened to me, the moisture stickers are still white but the area by the USB had some corrosion, sent in for warranty and was told a new board is required at 600$.
i think in the future i will try only get phones with some water protective grade or nano coating because very easy for the board to get wet and an easy way for them to avoid responsibilities.
I had two phones denied warranty coverage in the past 2 weeks because of this same crap. I recommend sending an email to the law firm that originally engaged with LG here:
www[dot]girardgibbs[dot]com/lg-g4-bootloop-class-action-lawsuit
It seems to me like LG is trying to deny as many warranty claims as possible. If there are enough reports of this, I think we may get another lawsuit against LG.
I just received a similar letter from LG, denying warranty for being a 'tampered device' with a 'fake backcover'. Now, while I did replace the back cover (I broke the camera lens); I fail to see how that affects the required repair, which is a motherboard replacement.
They claim that it is no longer covered under the 'original limited warranty'; but the original warranty period is over anyway, the only warranty remaining is for the bootloop. They want $356 to do the repair; I paid $430 for the phone originally.
LG certainly appears to be trying to deny as many of these as they can.
I’m going to call them and complain; maybe see if Google is better about honoring the warranty. But I don’t really want to buy the phone again when it will just bootloop again sooner or later.
