[Q] Nandroid successful, but not there? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I was planning on doing some stuff to my EVO, nandroided, then messed around some. Decided I didn't like my changes, went back to recovery, wiped, and then when I went to restore, my backup wasn't there.
Now, when I did the backup, it said it was successful. What else could I have done to keep things from getting fried?
Of course, my app backups aren't updated so I've lost all my game high scores

well if using amon ra, you can look for your nandroids in the nandroid folder on sd card.
if using clockwork, you can look for them in the clockwork folder on your sd card.
remember you can only restore amon ra back ups with amon ra, and the same goes for clockwork

Clockworkmod Recovery Nandroid over 3GB! ?

So I tried to make a nandroid backup today and had to pull the battery because it was taking forever. I checked the size of the file and it was over 3GB. I've made a bunch of backups before and they are usually aroud 200mb or so. What could be the problem? Any help would be great. Thanks.
my average aosp backup is 200-300mb, sense 500-600mb, desirehd mod 600-700mb
theres definitely a problem there, you could try RA recovery and do a backup (honestly i think its better but your absolutely fine if you have at least 1 good RA backup just to save your RSA keys) delete that 3gb backup file/folder because its obviously bad, try again and see if it still does it, if so then go into Rom Manager and flash RA recovery then reflash Clockwork and try the backup
That's either a glitch or you have some SERIOUS stuff on your phone lol. Anyway, I'd recommend reflashing Clockwork if it happens again.
I deleted the bad backup then I tried flashing RA Recovery and doing a new backup with the same results. What I ended up doing was restoring a previous backup and then tried and new backup. All is back to normal now.
I want to update my radio, wimax, pri, and nv. I know I should make a backup using RA recovery. Do I do a normal backup or backup with ext? I want to make sure I backup my RSA keys. Thanks for the help guys.
normal backup is fine
glad your problem is resolved

[Q] Which is better ClockworkMod or Amon-Ra recovery for EVO 4G recovery

I have read other threads in regards to this but nothing up to date. I wanted to know what is recommended now especially since gingerbread is out. And another question is if I do a nandroid backup in CW can I restore in Ra??

Personally I like Amon-Ra better & I believe if you do a backup w/ one recovery you can't restore w/ another one.
IN RA what is the USB-ms Toggle.

I like Amon RA better. I have never had a problem with it. I'm still running 1.8 with out any issues and I flash a lot.

SO i guess the upside to USB-ms toggle that you can mount your sd card while in recovery mode.
Which has better support though CW or RA.. I have read on other posts that RA will not be around much longer. And also that some have dual booted these two together..
its all preferance, both do the same thing, and both are not interchangable when it comes to nandroid backups, that should answer everything
Amon is better looking, but clockwork has support from rom manager. Both backup your wimax keys now.

Most people on the forums like Amon Ra more. It is less glitchy than CW and it has never let me down. (Clockwork mod totally messed up my Evo once)
But if you want to be a newb and use Rom Manager instead of flashing in the recovery, you need to use ClockworkMod.
I prefer Amon RA
I use Amon's because it is compatible with Fresh Evo.
Clockwork has issues with Fresh Evo. Also, being able to mount SD from recovery is very very nice.
I prefer Amon_RA for two reasons:
1) Its layout makes more sense to me.
2) Selective backup. In CMR you backup your /data, /cache, /system, /boot, wimax, and .android_secure folders/partitions every time, no matter what. In Amon_RA, I can tell it to just backup /data, /system, and /boot, cutting down the size of a backup from 30-50%, nevermind the time it takes to backup/restore. Let's face it, you DON'T need to backup your WiMAX every day, backing up cache is pointless (because the ROM/kernel can just rebuild it later), and .android_secure is on the SD card already (if your SD card goes, how are you going to restore your nandroid anyways?).
And a half-reason: Amon_RA still supports amend and edify scripts, so files like FORMAT_ALL.zip work for it, but not CMR.
Having said that, if you're looking for an easier time, and don't mind pruning your SD card more often, ClockworkMod Recovery is your choice, since it integrates completely with ROM Manager. You just select a ROM in ROM Manager, let it download, tell it to wipe and backup, then come back to your phone in a few minutes and you're in a new ROM.
Eh... i use amon-ra.. but i have had two backups that wouldn't successfully restore (Boot loop). Ended up losing some contacts..
+1 for amon-ra
Cw has given me nothing but problems
I will go out on a limb and say that I use CW, I tried RA, and honestly, I had nothing but problems with it. Looking at a lot of posts, people say that CW never wipes correctly, and I found out on my phone that RA never wiped correctly.
Really it's all a matter of choice though....use what works for you.
I just want to point out that you CAN use ROM Manager to flash even if you have Amon_Ra installed.
I have Ra installed and when a new CM7 Nightly come out, I get a notification, I tap it, and ROM Mananger does the rest.
There are other functions in ROM Manager that don't work unless you have Clockwork installed though, for sure. I just wanted to point that out!
Ra 1.8 has been flawless for me so far. I am moving on to try 2.3, but i don't really know if i want the new complications...
@drmacinyasha, if one goes the 2.3 route, after the initial backup of everything, what is the minimum you would recommend one backs up w/ all the options available?? /data, /system & /boot only? (as you posted)...and why?
Ok. Would I be able to do a nandroid back up and installing it on another EVO. Could that be done with RA or CW???

I believe it is technically possible but highly discouraged. Some of the things you back up are unique to your phone. I wouldn't do it.

Change from Clockwork mod to Amons ?

Hi Guys, I need to change from Clockwork mod to Amons because like eveyone says in forum Clockwork sucks and makes problems but the think is that I have my Nandroid backup with clockwork and it was my original sprint scene. I do not want to loose that backup.
Whats the solution ?
Only thing I can think of is to back that nandroid up on your computer or a spare micro sd card. So if you ever need it again you can put your clockwork mod recovery back on there and restore it. Ofcourse, you won't be able to restore it through RA, but here is the Amon recovery, just put it on the root of your sd card and let it find the update through the bootloader. If you want to save that nandroid, be sure to back it up so you can go back to clockwork and get it.
Edit: Actually, duh, you can back it up if you want to but don't have to. You can keep it on your card, just flash back to clockwork if you want to restore it.
And thanks to dougjamal for having it so handy!
You can restore it while your on cwm then change to ra do a nandroid from there and you will have it you can go back and fourth with recoverys I was in that same boat at one time had 3 backups on cwm took a little time but I got them all backed up with ra.
Also make sure you check off the right things in ra backup its different from cwm like you don't have to backup cache and dalvik cache it saves on memory too.
Just search how to do a nand backup with ra.

Thanks guys It was very helpful.
yeah amon ra is better

Two nandroid problems, need help

First issue is that for some reason, my wimax.img created when making a nandroid backup with ra 2.3 is only like 2,000 kb or a little larger. I understand from a previous post that wimax images are usually around the 12,000kb mark. When I backup using Clockwork, the resulting wimax.img is just over 12,000kb leading me to believe it is a good backup. This all came to issue a month or so ago when I thought my keys were gone. I ended up finding a few old backups on my pc, one nandroid and one clockwork, both of which contained the wimax image. However, when I nandroid restore the nandroid image, key checker said my keys were present but I wasn't able to connect to 4g. I then restored the clockwork backup and was able to connect to 4g right away. After further discovery in the backup folders, I found the nandroid wimax image to be just over 2,000kb while the clockwork image was over 12,000. I have tried to reflash ra recovery but it still only creates a 2,000kb wimax image. What is wrong????
The second part of the problem is that when I try to switch to clockwork from Rom Manager, it won't do it. It is stuck in RA!! Therefore, I cannot get into clockwork to restore any of the images I backed up that way. I had this issue in the past only I was stuck in Clockwork and couldn't get into RA. At that time, someone sent me a PC36100.zip (of RA recovery flash) which I put onto the root of my sd and flashed in bootloader, which allowed me to access RA recovery again. Why does it get stuck?? And, does someone have clockwork in a pc36100.zip format I can boot from?
Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it!
ok heres the pc36img for clockwordmod that you flash from hboot/fastboot http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=575257&d=1303478367
and for first issue try falshing an older recovery of amon ra then the newest amon ra 2.3
Great Jadden, thanks for the help. Do you by any chance have a zip of an older version of RA as well? What adverse effects will there be by downgrading? Can I recover a backup made in 2.3 with say 1.8? Are they 100% compatible?
By the way, is there any way to tell how big the wimax image is that the phone is currently operating on without making a backup of it? Some type of terminal prompts or something?
Sorry I don't have an older version of Amon-Ra and I don't know of any terminal promts either

Nandroids not working... help?

Apologies for what is probably an often asked question, but the search seems to be down at the moment. I'm currently running Ras 2.3 and when I make a nandroid backup of my MIUI, it always runs into an error when trying to restore? I don't even know where to begin looking for solutions to the issue, is this a common thing? Should I just re-flash Ras or something?
Seems the backup was corrupted, reflash your recovery, then make a new one.
Yeah every backup I do seems to get corrupted. I'll try reflashing AmonRa.

Let me know how it goes. Also make sure to have at least ~500mb available for a backup.
So I finally re-flashed AmonRa 2.3, and my nandroids STILL show an error! It gets like one dot into resotring and says "oops! an error occurred, check the logs" or something like that. What is happening
first thing would be to check your memory card to see if you have enough space like the post above says. if that doesn't work move the recovery.log via your recovery screen to the sd card and post it here. that should get some questions answered.
edit: also i had this happen to me a couple times when trying to restore it only happened when i changed big things like the radio or the hboot or switching from aosp to sense. that kinda stuff. you might just need to start over and flash a new rom. good thing you used titanium...right? p.s. just relized you were trying to restore not backup so the memory card issue shouldn't apply sry.
I have my MIUI backup so it's not so much of a big deal since that works, but I'd like to have a 100% working nandroid backup in the event that I wanna try out a new rom. Where to I find the recovery log so that I may post it up on here? Thanks for the help guys, I'd be lost without xda
So I just tried moving my recovery log to the SD card and I got the same message, "Oops... something went wrong! Please check the recovery log!"
WTF is going on here?
Potential causes and solutions:
Corrupt SD card. You're screwed, reformat SD card and flash the rom over again.
Corrupt Nandroid file. You're screwed, delete from SD card and flash the rom over again.
Corrupt Recover. Download Rom Manager and re-flash recovery (if you use clockwork, flash alternate then back to clockwork or vice versa if you use amon ra). If this doesn't work, it's likely one of the two above.
However, this is usually the problem when they mess up.
Is there a space in the name of the Nandroid backup? Nandroid backups can NOT EVER have a space in the title. Go into your favorite file manager and remove the space if it has one and it should work just fine.
For example:
MikFroyo 4.61 is NOT an acceptable name. There's a space between the o and the 4.
KonisEliteSeriesIII IS an acceptable name. Notice, there's no spaces.
Hit the thanks button if I helped. Toodles!
Don't use ROM Manager to reflash Amon Ra. Just use the PC36IMG
Trust me on this.
Is it possible that your original nandroids were with clockwork and now that you have updated to amon that they will not work?
Okay so I've re-flashed Amon Ra and reformatted my SD card and I STILL can't get the nandroids to work or my recovery log to move over to the SD card! I've only used Amon Ra for as long as I've been rooted, and nandroids previously worked. Also, these are nandroids that I made within the last 2 weeks or so, they're not old and I have not renamed them. Should I maybe try an older version of AmonRa or something?
OMG I figured it out! Here's the story:
So I bought a new SD card a few weeks back and put it in with just a straight copy of my old SD card in there. This included my nandroid folder. I had been making backups and deleting old backups, but the folder under sdcard/nandroid/HT089HL02240 simply needed to be deleted. I kept sdcard/nandroid, deleted HT089HL02240, then made a new nandroid so that the recovery could simply make this folder itself. Somehow this worked, I don't know why, but it seemed like it might help being that you can't restore nandroids between phones. Perhaps the recovery thought I was attempting to do this, given the SD card switch. Well it works now!
