Nandroids not working... help? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Apologies for what is probably an often asked question, but the search seems to be down at the moment. I'm currently running Ras 2.3 and when I make a nandroid backup of my MIUI, it always runs into an error when trying to restore? I don't even know where to begin looking for solutions to the issue, is this a common thing? Should I just re-flash Ras or something?

Seems the backup was corrupted, reflash your recovery, then make a new one.

Yeah every backup I do seems to get corrupted. I'll try reflashing AmonRa.

Let me know how it goes. Also make sure to have at least ~500mb available for a backup.

So I finally re-flashed AmonRa 2.3, and my nandroids STILL show an error! It gets like one dot into resotring and says "oops! an error occurred, check the logs" or something like that. What is happening

first thing would be to check your memory card to see if you have enough space like the post above says. if that doesn't work move the recovery.log via your recovery screen to the sd card and post it here. that should get some questions answered.
edit: also i had this happen to me a couple times when trying to restore it only happened when i changed big things like the radio or the hboot or switching from aosp to sense. that kinda stuff. you might just need to start over and flash a new rom. good thing you used titanium...right? p.s. just relized you were trying to restore not backup so the memory card issue shouldn't apply sry.

I have my MIUI backup so it's not so much of a big deal since that works, but I'd like to have a 100% working nandroid backup in the event that I wanna try out a new rom. Where to I find the recovery log so that I may post it up on here? Thanks for the help guys, I'd be lost without xda

So I just tried moving my recovery log to the SD card and I got the same message, "Oops... something went wrong! Please check the recovery log!"
WTF is going on here?

Potential causes and solutions:
Corrupt SD card. You're screwed, reformat SD card and flash the rom over again.
Corrupt Nandroid file. You're screwed, delete from SD card and flash the rom over again.
Corrupt Recover. Download Rom Manager and re-flash recovery (if you use clockwork, flash alternate then back to clockwork or vice versa if you use amon ra). If this doesn't work, it's likely one of the two above.
However, this is usually the problem when they mess up.
Is there a space in the name of the Nandroid backup? Nandroid backups can NOT EVER have a space in the title. Go into your favorite file manager and remove the space if it has one and it should work just fine.
For example:
MikFroyo 4.61 is NOT an acceptable name. There's a space between the o and the 4.
KonisEliteSeriesIII IS an acceptable name. Notice, there's no spaces.
Hit the thanks button if I helped. Toodles!

Don't use ROM Manager to reflash Amon Ra. Just use the PC36IMG
Trust me on this.

Is it possible that your original nandroids were with clockwork and now that you have updated to amon that they will not work?

Okay so I've re-flashed Amon Ra and reformatted my SD card and I STILL can't get the nandroids to work or my recovery log to move over to the SD card! I've only used Amon Ra for as long as I've been rooted, and nandroids previously worked. Also, these are nandroids that I made within the last 2 weeks or so, they're not old and I have not renamed them. Should I maybe try an older version of AmonRa or something?

OMG I figured it out! Here's the story:
So I bought a new SD card a few weeks back and put it in with just a straight copy of my old SD card in there. This included my nandroid folder. I had been making backups and deleting old backups, but the folder under sdcard/nandroid/HT089HL02240 simply needed to be deleted. I kept sdcard/nandroid, deleted HT089HL02240, then made a new nandroid so that the recovery could simply make this folder itself. Somehow this worked, I don't know why, but it seemed like it might help being that you can't restore nandroids between phones. Perhaps the recovery thought I was attempting to do this, given the SD card switch. Well it works now!

I am getting this error when ever I try to do a nand restore : Error: run ' nandroid-mobile.sh restore ' via adb!
I am running amon ra 1.8, I have the latest sprint lovers installed running 3.70, new radios, pri 1.90. Hboot 79. I've succesfully backed up and restored nands in the past but now I get this error. I've tried to backup and then immediately try to restore the backup and I get the same error so its not a corrupt backup. I have more than 6gb available on my sd card and am fully charged. I've looked in other threads and haven't found an answer. Any help is appreciated since I'm flying without a net when I flash if I can't restore my nand.
Run the command from adb shell, and it'll tell you what's wrong. Duh.
In other words, do what it tells you to do. Is it really so hard to follow instructions?
Hey man had the same problem. I was on miui and I went back to sense to update profile and flashed the new radio combo so I made a nandroid of miui first and then when I tried to restore that same back up I got the same error that you got. I'm not positive but I think that it has something to do with flashing the new radio and then switching to aosp rom. I ended up having to reflash miui and then every thing went back to working normally.

nandroid won't work if battery is low, I think if it's less than 30% charged, might want to try charging it before restoring to see if it helps...
I've had this happen with a full battery. The couple of times I had it happen I just wiped cache and dalvik. Rebooted back up, then gone back into recovery and then was able to restore the nand backup. Might give that a shot.

I had the same problem and what nefariouss is saying might work. Also, once i wiped several times and then completely turned the phone off and booted back into recovery and then it would restore. Another time i reflashed the rom that i was trying to restore and once it booted i went back to recovery, wiped all and then it would restore. Hope that helps. Just keep messing with it. I know its a pain but eventually it will restore.

if your sd card didnt partion properly this will happen.
save everything on your sd.
reboot into recovery
repartition sd card.
read that a few people running clockwork recovery have this issue frequently.
Delete Spaces!
If you are trying to flash a file in recovery that has spaces in it, it will not flash and will give you that error. so 'Fresh Evo.zip' won't work, but FreshEvo.zip will work.
FML, ignore this post please. I was a bit stupid.
Sorry for bumping, I have the same problem on my Optimus One p500
Sorry for bumping but I'm really worried about my phone. I have the same problem on my Optimus One and I've tried stuff mentioned above with NO success. Is there maybe another way to restore stock Froyo or to get this working?? I'm a total noob by the way..

Download and flash this. It is a rooted stock rom (Froyo) that has NOT been deodexed. In other words, it is THE stock HTC sense rom (3.70) that will allow you to maintain root privileges. While in recovery, wipe EVERYTHING in the wipe menu EXCEPT the SD card BEFORE flashing.

This happened to me and I tried everything listed. Reformatted my SD card. Copied everything back and nand restore finished first time. Polly unrelated but the only thing different was I had upgraded my RA recovery after I had made the backup.

Same thing happened to me after I updated Amon Ra recovery after doing a nandroid backup. Desire wouldn't boot and got stuck on white screen. Tried to do the backup using ADB but each time I got to the last step it failed. So I tried clearing Dalvik cache etc and finally wiped my card using recovery. After a couple of attempts, I was able to restore the last nandroid backup. Big relief.

Backup problems with DInc 2 and CMR

I have s-off and am permanently rooted. I am able to flash and run such roms as CM7.1 and RMK Gingersense from the original .zip file without a problem. However I have been unable to restore a single backup made with ClockworkMod Recovery.
For example, once I flash Gingersense I am unable to restore a backup to CM7.1. If I flash CM7.1 I am unable to restore a backup to Gingersense. In fact, I can't even successfully restore a previous backup of the same rom. I have reloaded CMR several times.
Every time I try to restore a backup, when I reboot I freeze on the white HTC screen. I have tried wiping everything before restoring, but that doesn't help.
It's a pain not being able to play with new roms and variations without being able to painlessly restore from a backup.
Any ideas?

Here are a couple of thoughts.
1 - Is your SD Card full? I had been flashing ROMs and doing back ups a lot recently. As I flashed a ROM to give it a try, I noticed that my back up went very quick. I thought nothing of it, but when I restored that back up, it did not work and caused problems. Looking into things, their was not enough room on the SD Card for the back up to complete all partitions, so it did what it could and finished. You may have several back ups that are incomplete.
2 - You are not waiting long enough for the phone to boot. I have had my phone stuck on the HTC screen for a minute or more before it finally starts the boot animation. If the HTC animation keeps starting over, you have a boot loop, but if it is just on the screen, it may just be taking longer to boot.
I hope this helps.
I had some similar issues at one point. I would try deleting the entire clockwork folder from your SD card and let it recreate when you go back into cwr. That's what worked for me. I believe it was due to some older files that were left behind from prior versions of cwr.
Sent from my ADR6350
Sounds like the same problem I had. Which was a bad SD card format. You can try to format your SD card via Windows and start all over. One thing to note is when you hook your phone up to your computer and mount it that you must use the safely remove device icon in the system tray. This will cause many problems for you if you don't. Trust me, I learned the hard way!
Thanks for suggestions, but I don't think we've got it yet.
Plenty of room for backups (more than 7 GB) on SD card. Have looked at backup files and am pretty sure they are complete. Backups take the usual amount of time, but I notice the failed restores go more quickly than full new installs.
Always use safely disconnect to disconnect from computer (rarely mount to computer anyway - files are usually sent to phone through Dropbox).
Suppose I can reformat SD card, but what a hassle to copy/paste everything back on.
Will try deleting CMR folder, but don't think there could be vestiges from previous versions since this is the first/only version installed since root.
Any other ideas from the incredibly bright and helpful people on this forum?

This is your best solution. If it doesn't work then you might have a bad SD card. It is a hassle to format the card but if you want it to work then it's the best solution.
Just a follow-up for anyone who lands on this thread because they have a similar problem.
Following the advice of spizzo03, I completely deleted ClockworkMod Recovery -- the app, the paid license app and the folder on the SD card. I then reinstalled just the free app of CMR from the Market.
Testing by trying to restore one of my backups ... IT NOW WORKS. Goes through the entire restore process -- system, data, cache, etc. -- whereas before it used to stop while restoring system.
Thanks to all who offered suggestions.

Another one here. I was having issues as well restoring backups and simply wiping the sdcard's clockworkmod folder was enough for me.

RA Recovery Error

First off I have searched through the threads and Google and havent found an answer to my exact issue.
I was messing with BootManager 2.0 and running CM7 and trying to install a stock sense rom as a SD boot ROM. The rom wouldnt run from the card. So I backed up CM7 and tried to run the sense rom as my default and then run CM7 as the SD bootable. Then when I tried to run the RA Recovery of CM7 I got the generic "oops somthing went wrong" and it hapend on all the recoveris I have. I cannot move the recovery log to the SD card either because of the same error.
I copied my needed content off my SD card and formatted it and coped back mu pics, downloads, and nandroids, and tried again and still same error. Even after reflashing RA nothing is changing.
Is there anyway to get my nandroids back?
Was there enough space on the sd card when you made the backup?
Yeah I had plenty of room. I had at least 1.4 GB free after the backup.
My origanal WiMax and Stock Rom recovery are looking like they are corupted as well.

Have you tried re-flashing the recovery via PC36IMG? And if your wimax is corrupted, then its shot. You have no other copies of it?
My wimax still works, its just the backup, the very first backup I made when I rooted my phone will not even work now. Any new rom I install will still run wimax. The partition is fine.
I wiped everything and then placed my recoveris back on my card and went to CWM and then back to RA to try to get rid of anything lingering. I know my previous backups worked because I use them all the time. It was after using BootManager that none of my recoverys new or old will work. It will let me flash new roms and even back them up but then I can not even restore those
Edit: One thing I was thinking of doing. What if I compleatly whent stock unroot and s-on and then rooted again. Would that have any effect? It seems like its something on the phone or in RA that is causing the issues. Just because any new backup I make it will give the same error. So if I go back and start fresh, then try to use my backups, would that work?
Why not try re-flashing Amon-Ra first
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I have through the bootloader and still no change. I then wiped everything and then installed CWM, then reflashed RA 2.3 and still when selecting Recover or Move Log to SD Card It starts working and gives 1 progress dot and then stops and says Oops something has happend, and ask me to check the log, but I cant because it wont let me move it because of the same error. I tried to look in the cache/recovery folder with ES File Explorer with root access but the folder is empty, so I have really no idea whare it is breaking at.

This.
I've had that happen twice since I got my Evo (Both times on CM7, ironically) and I reflashed AR and it was good to go.
As I have said in 3 of my 4 post I have re-flashed RA. No change.
Reflash via pc36img not through bootmanager. Put it on root of ur SD card. Boot into boot loader and accept the update.

As I said also in post #7 I flashed it through the bootloader as well. BootManager is for duel booting roms, or quad-booting rather. I wasnt trying to flash through that. I went as far just now as compleatly unrooting to stock GB 2.3.3 with s-on and then rerooted and reflashed RA 2.3 and they are still not working. Why and how did my backups become corrupt? I did not touch them. What could I do to bring them back?

Just want to double check, did you download RA to make sure your download isn't corrupted... Also I wonder if you were using sdcard multimount, which can corrupt data on the sdcard
The only mounts I was using was the USB-Mount built in RA and the Disk Mode in the roms. The download of RA I am using is the same one I always have that has never given me issues before.
Have you tried formatting your SD card from Amon Ra? I know that you formatted an reflashed, but it's just odd. It seems like one of those two things would do something. You can make backups but just can't restore, correct?
Do you have an extra card you could use? Maybe that way you can narrow down if it's the card or your recovery. I don't know if it's even possible, but can your recovery partition get messed up?

I formatted the card threw windows after running a chkdsk on it. then I formatted again through RA. Still no go. Now I am trying to partition it and see if that makes a difference.
EDIT: Success! for whatever reason that makes no sense at all, partitioning the SD Card to a ext4 made the recovery work. I have never ran my card with partitions before so I have no idea why this worked. Thoughts?

Honestly...no reason why that should have worked, though beware, you pc may not read you sd card because windows only likes ext 2 and 3 partitions; it won't see ext 4.

Pardon my harshness but Boot Manager, ROM Manager, Kernel Manager, it's all crap. Add CWM in there too.
The BEST ways to do something is to not shortcut the process with these programs. Like flashing radios. You know if you find a pc36img of the radio you want ot flash, there is no reboot to recovery, wait, blahhhh.... it does it all in Hboot, just like this. Put the PC36IMG on your SD Card and flash it in Hboot, as it was designed to be done

[Q] Amon Ra 2.3 Nandroid Restore Couldn't Open Directory

I rooted my HTC Evo 4g 2 days ago using revolutionary and replaced clockwork mod with amon ra 2.3 and I flashed the Synergy - [RLS1 + GodMode 08/05/2011] rom and it worked fine.
Last night I flashed the Warm Synergy Theme For RLS1 and it didn't work and it was force closing on multiple apps like messaging, people ect. so I restored the nandroid I created right before flashing.
Now today I go to recovery and try to go to nandroid restore and it says "E:Couldn't open directory /sdcard/nandroid/"
I also had deleted the recovery zip off my SD card because I thought I no longer need it so I tried putting it back on there and nothing changed.
Anyone know whats going on? I couldn't find any threads with this same problem.

Honestly, you don't TRULY need the nandroid backup file to resolve your issue. If your nandroid was just a backup of your stock ROM then just flash a rooted stock ROM. If it was just a previous flash of Synergy then just reflash that ROM.
lol the rom isnt the problem the only problem is that it wont let me go into my nandroid restore.
do you think that the rom is causing this?
Did you rename the nandroid restore?
I believe he said he did and put it on root of SD. That is wrong location for it hence his problem

Check the name of the backup. Make sure there is no spaces or characters, other than -
While you can add to the end of the default name that the nandroid backup is given, you cannot change or remove that name. or have any spaces in the name. Also, it has to be in the folder that it was originally set in when you did your nandroid.
For example, the name I have for my last nandroid is
BDEARS-20111008-1719_MIUI-10-7-complete

You can change that name completely. My backups typically look like:
CM7_30_Oct
The only thing is: you can't use spaces, or invalid characters, like an asterisk. Underscores and hyphens are fair game.
And yes, you can't change the name of the HT.....[device name] or it'll say the backup is corrupted.

What stands for the android_secure folder?
That's why you should make a nand backup from time to time.

What was said to you is actually useful for you... just not in your current situation. So the next time you mess with your phone do a nand.
What you can do is reflash the rom from the original sd card WITHOUT wiping. Just put the rom zip on the original sd card and flash. That should reinitiate and detect your sd ext.
Of course I haven't tried this but given your situation this might just work. If it doesn't then you should have made a nand prior like what was said before.

Nobody wants to listen, they all just go mad.
Symlinks are broken, try to delete cache and dalvik from recovery, but I'm not sure if it will help.
The best solution is to start from scratch, it's only your fault that you don't have any backup.
THE GOLDEN RULE OF FLASHING - MAKE A NAND BACKUP PRIOR FLASHING AND PLAYING WITH YOUR PHONE!!!
