[Q] Apps not to install when running CM7 - Defy General

How about a list of apps that should not be installed by someone running CM7?
I already bricked my phone once by installing 2nd init on a modded phone.
I was running setvsel but just realised that that should not be run on CM7 phones.
Does anyone know if Juice defender is ok to run?
What else should not be installed?

Why not setvsel?, I have it running without any problem but you're right, I've realized that Cm7 has this feature built in, but I like the setvsel CPU meter
Also lol @ the 2nd unit install, cm already boots off of it

[Q] too many task-killers?

Hey all,
I've got a rooted Incredible, thanks to many of you on here. I installed AutoKiller Memory Optimizer soon after rooting...as well as SetCPU. I played with the settings and have been using those for the past month that I've been running with no issues. After reading a post in Lifehacker yesterday I thought twice about using some of the tools they listed there...such as Autostarts and Watchdog...instead of Autokiller.
Without this becoming a discussion about whether or not task-killers are needed on my Sense 2.2, what would be my best set-up? Should I use all three, or am I doubling up when I don't need to? And finally, is Autokiller a "task-killer"?
What should I be running on my machine?
Thanks.
With my experience, on 2.2, task killers result in worse battery life. I have no task killer, no setcpu, and I'm on stock 2.2 with KingBFS#5 kernel and get an average of 19 hours on the stock battery.

Auto killer is not a task killer per se, it allows you to tweak the parameters of Android's internal memory management. It works very well from my experience with it.

since root i find no reason for any task killers.
I have deleted all bloatware.
And if i have battery trouble I will use systempanel to find out what's the trouble maker.
Auto-killers seem like a good option but so far i don't have any trouble apps.
I think I'll delete Autostarts and Watchdog and possibly just stick with Auto Killer for now. It seems as if it's not really a task killer...but it keeps everything running smoothly. I just think that Android is smart enough to keep things running when they need to run, or may need to run. There are apps that go out of control...but there's easier ways to monitor those. In time, I think I may uninstall...or be persuaded to uninstall AutoKiller.
I've been thinking about kernels, radios...and new ROMs ever since I rooted. As far as right now, I'm cool with Sense...but having more control of it and what runs.

Well if it's any help to you I am running virtuous with a Hydra kernel and so far it's splendid.

I might think about doing that. The one thing that would sway me would be getting updates and tweaks faster than Verizon or HTC get them to me.
If I backā€“up my Sense 2.2, and then start playing with Roms, kernels, radios, etc... and I don't like it, can I go back to basics?

Yes backups would allow you to revert to when you took the backup. Virtuous is very good and close to stock but with options. Check out the forum "best sense ROM" in the incredible general section for sense based roms

[Q] Gingervillain v1.4 vs. CM7 RC1

I have a couple questions in regards to the two different ROMS. I'm currently running Gingervillain v1.4. Didn't update to 1.5 because there was a bug or something that I read into that made me decide not to update.
Now, with the release of CM7, I would like to know if I should flash this.
The main problems I have with Gingervillain that's irritating are:
1) WiFi Calling does not work
2) Sometimes screen does not go on after hitting the unlock button (talks about this being an OC issue)
3) a bunch of random reboots
But I found it extremely convenient that Gingervillain included an OC kernal within their ROM so it saved me time and research. Does CM7 have an OC kernal built in too? And what are some MAIN issues that CM7 suffer from? I've read in a few but I wanna know of the main things that will cause a problem in daily usage (I heard GPS had issues).
Get CM7. Nothing against GV but all u seek is in CM7.

I second that

I have no issues with CM7, GPS gets a lock in less than five sec., been using it since Build 0 and yes it comes with an OC'd kernel.
CM7 RC1 all the way lol. No issue at all for me

Been using CM7 since nightly #30 (were on #40 now). WiFi calling works, GPS now seems to work for everyone (confirmed working just fine locks in <10 sec), and I've never had a reboot.
I'm running at 1017mhz OC and no screen on/off issues or wakelock, although I've heard that people overclocked are having some issues here and there. I've also replaced ADW with the stock GB launcher and its extreeeemely smooth.
get cm7 rc1
Wow... majority rules... CM7 here I come.. LOL
I dont know if my gps isn't working or if it's just taking a stupid long amount of time to lock on to satellites. How can I make sure my gps is working?

1) using wifi calling in GV1.5, no issues for me.
2) OC'd screenlock issue fix: use Interactive scaling instead of on-demand.
3) (I haven't had random reboots on any gingerbread roms so I can't help you there )
not saying don't go CM7 - pretty obvious that it's a solid rom, but I quite like GV1.5 on my G2. it's snappier for me, even at stock clocks.
I run GV1.5 the exact same way I was running CM7 - same settings, LauncherPro with 1 homescreen and 2 dock screens and 3D drawer, 1113/368 with interactive scaling and no profiles set up (haven't needed to yet).
the main reason I switched from CM7 is that LauncherPro would FC every time I started my phone. GV1.5 fixed that for me. other than that, I don't think you can go wrong with either of these roms at this point...
plus, GV2.0 is fast approaching
I have a gray GPS icon in the notification bar when I'm trying to use it. But I've waited over 15 minutes without a lock-on.
Is my GPS not functioning, or is it just taking ridiculously long to lock on??

[Q] APKs wont run on CM7 Mytouch 3GS

lol ok im back already people, here again for those of you that didnt see my first post i have a MyTouch 3GS w/ gapps and CM7 installed, along with apps2sd AND data2ext. now i downloaded the NFS shift apk before i rooted my device, and it ran fine on 2.2 froyo (the official one), and even after i rooted and used 3rd sense rom, it worked, BUT wen i got to CM 7.0.0 and CM 7.0.3 , it will load the "NFS Shift" boot screen, go black, then exit back to the screen i was on before i ran the game (typically the home screen) so does anyone hav a solution to this problem. let me add that i downloaded CPU tuner from the market, if i increase the amount of Mhz it uses to increase performance, will this allow the games to run!? please someone help me
p.s. i tried it on a modified NOVA apk and the same thing happened
Thanks in advance!!!
I believe it's because the app isn't supported on 2.3 yet, or at least not CM7. Not much you can do about that. If you want, you can flash a froyo rom, you should be able to run it on that.
Try moving the app to SD card, in case you haven't yet and see if it works that way.

USB storage problem

Just flashed Decks 1.2 ROM along with Tiamat 2.1.5 kernel. for some reason when I connect the USB cord it only charges and will not allow me to use USB storage. Any ideas as to why not? It worked with CM7 and Warm 2.2 so there shouldn't be a reason for it not to work now.
Download the kernel manager app and try the godmode kernel it should work. If not try the savaged-zen cfs kernel and if it works but you don't like the idea of having SBC send me a pm and ill give you a link to a flashable zip that disables it
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Thanks for the info. It's going to have to wait until I home later tonight though. Apparently I can only download apps over wi-fi and not 3G. I'm hoping it's just a kernel issue because I'm loving this ROM.
Just flashed the Savaged-Zen kernel and now its working like a charm. You sir are a genius.
No problem like i said tell me if you don't want the SBC in the kernel because some people aren't comfortable using it thinking it will toast their battery...
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Brief description of SBC please? I don't know all that much about kernels. All I know is that it's supposed to help my battery life. It's been off the charger for 15 hours now and only down to 65% with me texting all day so I would say it's doing its job.
sbc will help you a lot with battery life it increases the batt life.
I use sbc with no problem. But 8 people have reported tht their battery has been fryed becuz of sbc (they have no proof but their word)
by the way decks rom with sz kernel sbc with viperboys scripts is amazin batt life
Ok thats another new one. What exactly are scripts? Forgive me for all the questions, I know how to root and flash ROMs but I never really got around to the nitty gritty until just recently.
Just google "kernel starter guide xda" that decribes everything you need to know (i also think its stickied in the development forum). And a script long story short is a line of code that when entered into the terminal emulator app will change how you phone does a certain thing(depends what that line was meant to do such as undervolting to save battery)
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I'll go check that out, thanks. Still having a problem downloading apps from the market over 3G though. I can download all day long over wi-fi with no problems so I dont get it. When I click install the download progress bar comes up and the icon appears in my notification bar but when it's done the app isn't installed.
Nevermind, I found the fix. Installed S2E and everything is all better.

[Q] Fast ROM? Among some other q's

ive been kinda out of the rom flashing game for a bit.
but i just flashed prime 3d about a month ago and i've been finding my phone is rather slow, and the battery life is horrible.
so today i read about the ext4 mod, and tried that. my phone seems slightly faster than before as far as opening app drawer and getting into settings and little stuff, but.... my quadrant scores tanked my best is 1046.
with my previous rom i got up to 1700's. am i missing something? was i supposed to make a partition first before the ext4 mod thing?
should i not use setcpu or auto memory manager?
also, what is a good stable ROM that has full camera/camcorder(720p) and can be fast, or long battery life while tethering to my Transformer?
thanks for any info
I would try flashing the ext4 on a fresh rom install with a supported kernal. The 3.x roms are just battery hogs. I run Bugless Beast(aosp) Incredikernal with the ext4. My top quadrant was 2200-2300. I'm pretty sure 720p works but don't quote me on that. Wifi tether works fine.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
i was also wondering about something else. a while back i flashed a kernel with some kind of opengl (or whatever the GPU software was) update, and since when the quadrant graphics 3d tests happen my screen is blank except for the DNA strand one? \
any clue on how to fix this?? i thought it was an incredikernal, but not sure
i switched to bugless and it feels faster after i did the supercharge v6 thing, but my quadrants are at 1100.
i remembered that when the screen was blank on quadrant i had flashed an incredikernal with gpu+, it was from 2010 and i think thats what my problem is
Here's the link for the website just download the latest gbread AOSP build

Try this
So this ROM has some purple in it, but you can use the UOT Kitchen to change what you don't like. I was in the habit of trying all the new ROMs that came out and was flashing all the time until I ran across this ROM. It is pretty much stock, but the battery life is incredible. From what I can tell Facebook for HTC Sense is not present, but with this ROM I have no reason to try the new ones that bog down the phone.
