HTC Desire on Orange Network - Desire General

Is anyone else having massive problems with the Orange Network in UK? My Desires signal is weak a majority of the time, if any signal at all and mobile network poor. Is it just me or is there a tweak for my phone to make the signal stronger? After chatting to a mate who has a Samsung Galaxy S, he has the same problem with Orange so i'm wondering if it is the network?

not sure probably depends on your area. One thing as Orange and t-mobile have merged in the UK you can use the t-mobile network as well as orange without additional charge.
http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/personal/Signal-sharing

It's the network being rubbish as they're trying to merge T-Mobile and Orange. Mine is coming and going all the time and has been like that for a while. Will end up leaving them when my contract finishes as they used to have the best signal where I live.

Something similar happened for me at home at the start of the year. Previously I had decent EDGE coverage.
Then signal came and went, all data came and went and now I have passable GPRS only. Good thing I also have decent wifi.
Long story short - its probably a signal 'upgrade' to do with the T mobile merger. One of the features of the merger is rationalisation of cells - or switching them off to you and me.

Most likely it is Orange. Earlier this year I ring them up about 5 times complaining about the same issue. Tbh it never got dealt with but it ironed itself out. I'm not happy with Orange anyway so when my contract ends I will be changing.
Swyped...

Make sure your phone is set to auto network select...not manual ..

Cheers guys. I think i'll be leaving Orange at the end of the contract. I notice that since the t-mobile merger my signal has got much worse.

Definitely a problem for me too, i am using a stock Desire bought sim free and get a really poor signal but my mate has an Orange branded Desire with an older firmware and gets a much better signal so may be a problem with newer rom updates.

I found out something very interesting today.I'm on tmobile and when my phone picks up the orange signal it only a 2g signal. They don't tell you that when you sign up.I'm not sure but it might be the same set up visa versa and that would explain the signal problems. For now I have selected tmobile only and things have been better and I noticed a difference straight away.Tmobile has a message on the Customer Service line saying that sometime in the near future we will be able to use orange 3g as well, though i'm not sure if that means orange customers can use tmobile 3g,although I should think it would..
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

Same for Orange, they said we will be able to pick up T-mobile 3G signal sometime in the future.........until then, when the Orange signal is ****, not very good, i get standard T-mob signal, sorry Orange, but i'm also off at the end of my current contract, the signal is garbage.

HTC Desire on Orange (data issue)

Hoping you could help me.
I switched from o2 to orange and got a desire in april. one of the first things I did was debrand it, now I'm running defrost. The problem is, it's never worked properly and I'm getting sick of it, so it's going back to orange. My problem is that I can get internet fine on GPRS and HSDPA, I've never seen the EDGE symbol and if I'm only on 3G (not HSDPA) I cannot get any data at all (ever).
I've tried every radio in existence, does anyone else have this problem?
Anyway, I called tech support earlier and they asked do I have 3G symbol in upper or lower case. I can't remember how it looks on the stock orange rom, I know hsdpa is 3G+ but besides that I can't remember whether it's upper or lower case. Could someone please let me know.
Also, anyone got a link for the stock orange rom?
Pretty sure it is all uppercase.
+1 to uppercase. Lots of people have the same problem. I have in some situations been able to use UMTS 3G but 90% of the time it just stalls for ten seconds and then reverts to GPRS o HSDPA. Since I've been away from the city, I've started getting EDGE connections quite frequently.
Orange data seems extremely unstable for me. Especially annoying when im with someone and i tell them "oh let me just check google maps" and then nothing happens even though i've got full signal and H/3G.
Same here in Glasgow.
Debranded Orange with stock ROM and I can often have full 3G+/H coverage but no data throughput
This is an inherant problem though, even though you may have four bars of signal from the local cell, there's no guarantee of any data bandwidth on that cell.
Think of it like my home network:
I have an Apple Airport Wi-Fi base station providing my wireless network.
I then connect it this into my DSL router via an ethernet cable.
Now, even if my DSL connection is down, the router is fully utilised, down, or the ethernet cable to the Airport is down - my Desire, iPod Touch, Laptop etc will all display full wireless connectivity, but I can't do any browsing on them
Thanks guys, I knew there were widespread problems but didn't know whether or not everyone had the same symptoms. Pretty irritating, I'm getting pretty sick of not being able to rely on my phone! I had an unlocked g1 on o2 previously and in comparison it was awesome. I'm definitely going to tell Orange this isn't good enough.
Sadly, I don't think getting a replacement is going to help. Completely spoils an otherwise amazing phone.
I'll never recommend thus to anyone!
Phone> "*#*#4636#*#* >phone information > preferred network type > GSM Auto (PRL)
That did it for me

I had the same problem. My advise to you all is do what I did, call Orange executive office, tell them the problem and that you'd like to cancel your contract because they are not supplying what you pay for. Then go to tmob, and get the same contract, except the mobile internet works 100% of the time. Just a heads up, I had an 8 month battle with Orange over this. Now on tmob, and I've never been happier.
I bet if you phone customer services over this they'll say "we've never heard of this issue before" even though they've heard it loads. Orange are not acknowledging the problem exists.
PS I hate Orange (incase you couldn't tell!)

Thanks, that's good to know. I've had some experience of what the exec customer complaints team do at work -its a very effective route!

T-Mobile linking with Orange

If you want to take advantage of the improved reception service. Download the app Your Orange from the market "if your on Orange of course". Then there should be a link on there to sign up to use the both network carriers which is coming online in October.
Thought I'd let orange users know if they didn't. I'm not sure about the T-Mobile users though.
The link on Your Orange is called "Text and call in more places"

How dare you make malicious claims that orange bloatware is usefull. I nearly believed you.
Thanks for the hint I didn't realise you had to do something to take advantage of this.
Brilliant...I've filled my details in cos i get naff all signal in my house!! lol
T-Mo and Orange are really looking for early adopters, at some point in time (next year I think) the ability will be rolled out to all their respective customers.
Just got a call from Orange regarding this because I sent them an email. And they said that T-Mobile users will also take advantage of the Orange network as well so its not just for Orange.
Happy Days

Fairly sure that initially this is voice and text only so if roaming, there will not be any data (push email etc)

Orange told me that if the phone picks up a stronger signal with T-Mobile than orange in a specific area. It will connect with T-Mobile instead of orange. So I think it will use data
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
According to the various news stories a couple of weeks ago, it will be 2G initially and 3G will be coming later. Going live 5th October, apparently!
So does this affect Virgin users since Virgin are piggy-backed on the T-mobile network?
If it is 2G only then booo. I don't have a problem getting a signal ANYWHERE however i do not get 3G in my home or within half a mile of it. Orange has 3G in my area so was hoping for that lol.
EDIT:
No data til next year possibly.

The shared network at the moment only supports voice calls and text messaging. Everything Everywhere said next year the offer will be extended to mobile data, and will also provide seamless mid-call hand-off between Orange's and T-Mobile's networks.

All T-Mobile & Orange UK Customers Look Here!

As some of you may know, T-Mobile and Orange are merging
So what are the benefits to T-Mobile customers?
You should be able to get better coverage
Improved signal
Faster Internet
So when do you get these benefits?
NOW - and it's free
I've just done it and now instead of 3 bars i get 4

All you have to do is turn on Data Roaming in Wireless & Network Settings
I did this yesterday, thought it would be good. Seen no difference, not a thing so far!
Anyone know how to keep an eye on if I'm on T-Mobile or Orange cell towers??
Also when you enable "Data Roaming in Wireless & Network Settings" there is a rather nasty warning about potentially incurring charges from other operators, could it hop me over onto other providers without me knowing and getting me cross-network charging? (I'll admit I don't really understand the roaming part of this)
couple of issues with this:
1) 2G roaming only until 2011
2) Orange cell will only be selected if their is zero tmobile coverage. Auto selecting best cell site for signal strength will be next year.
In other words, this is a very basic roaming service.
You can force orange service but then you will only get 2G
i did this yesterday, will be better when HSDPA is added.
At the moment, until sometime in 2011 you will only use the "other" network when you lose your existing signal completely.
In 2011 it will just give you whatever is strongest, but at the moment you have to completely lose all your existing signal.
And it only shares 2g at the moment, so you will not be able to get better 3g signals.
but still useful for those times when you do in fact lose signal or your signal is low.
and if you sign up now then you'll be ready for 2011
First quarter is when 3g/Hsdpa roaming will be enabled.
You can manually select either network at the minute tho

One benefit is lower power after it locks on to an Orange signal when having lost the T-Mobile signal. Otherwise, mine would be stuck with high power drain searching, checking, verifying and registering to the T-Mobile network consecutively. I definitely now have 1-3 bars with Orange when I had 0 priorly. Very happy at the move.

Yes, it will be called Everything Everywhere but if you're on T-mo and sign up for this, the network will appear as "T-mobile Orange" when you're "roaming" on the Orange network. I think for Orange customers "roaming" on the T-mo network it shows as "Orange T-mobile"

Their project is called Everything Everywhere, but the network that you connect to when yours has lost signal is Orange T-Mobile (and vice versa)

This looks really good.
I never got a T-Mobile signal inside our local supermarket, but now got a full 4 bars under 'Orange T-Mobile'... and as soon as back home, Im back to T-Mobile again. Cool!
I sent the text to have this set up on my iPhone. To get this to work on my desire I will just need to turn on roaming and aromatic network selection won't i?

well orange sent me a text the other day to tell me my phone switched over to the t-mobile network for the first time...
after breaking in to a cold sweat and holding on to the nearest fixed object rather tightly, waiting for aliens to land, or the world to end...
I deleted the text and life went on as normal lol
I have just set up my phone! Hopefully this should improve Orange's poor coverage

Anyone on Three Uk having signal problems (2g) ??

I have my Desire on Three UK network. It used to fall back to a 2G signal when there was no 3g coverage, for example when I am at home.
I noticed yesterday that my phone just wouldn't get a signal in the house, I then checked my old N95 which still has a Three Uk sim card and same problem.
Anyway I went to work and same issue inside the office. Can get a 3g signal when there is one but no 2g signal.
I deceided to phone up Three customer service to see if there was a fault or something but no real help there apart from they said they would report what I said to their technical team.
I then come home and look on the net and see things like this....
http://www.gogadgetnews.com/2010/11/08/3-starts-killing-off-2g-coverage/
Is anyone else experiencing similar problems ?
If they have switched of 2g here then I am fuming as it means I cant receive any calls at home !!

They used to use O2, but they switched to Orange some years ago.
If you no longer get a signal at home or work you may be able to get out of your contract.
Regards,
Dave
Yes. so much so i have got out of my contract eary without penatly, over the last 6 months the 3g transmiter works for a few days every time thay fix it.
Thay have turned off 2g now a quick look on Google will fill you in with the information.

Loss of signal, no auto reconnect.

I am having an issue on my One X (unbranded and unlocked) with the signal vanishing and not reconnecting unless I force it. I was wondering whether it effects all networks or just networks that use more than one carrier. Three has its own 3G network but it uses Orange 2G signal. I also saw a thread with the same issue on T-Mobile / Orange which is also dual carrier.
I am wondering whether it is the switch between these networks which is causing it to lose signal and not reconnect.
I have had several instances where my signal has an R next to it as if it is roaming, this would be when it is connected to the Orange 2G network, I never had this problem on my Desire HD or Sensation.
Does anyone know of any issues on Vodafone or O2 regarding signal loss or is it just networks which use multiple carriers.
My One X is stock and bootloader has not been unlocked.
Thoughts?
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Are you still on the 126 SW?
As your unbranded then you should be able to get the 128 update.
With 126, my Three handset recieve level was about -88 to 91dbm.
With 128 its now at -75dbm in the same location.
Most, if not all of the roam to Orange has now been disabled, remaining where there is no Three signal at all.
Steve
No I have upgraded to 1.28, unfortunately I am still in an area where it does switch to Orange 2G signal.
It seems to hang on to 3G until I have virtually no signal, then goes to no signal and doesn't reconnect unless I force it. It seems to mostly happen when I put the phone away on my pocket so I dont notice I have no signal until I check my phone.
I lost signal today and to test the reconnect I left the screen on and I drove about 20 miles through large-ish towns and it didn't reconnect once, had to force it when I got home.
Not sure if this effects single carrier networks, O2 or Vodafone?
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Have you had the same issue with any other handset?
Are you a new customer to Three and this is the first you have seen of this?
Reason I ask is when I was thinking of going to Three for my main phone, I tested with a handset I just used for tethering off the one plan.
I drove out of town to an area where I guessed there would be no Three coverage.
The signal hung on for ages but when it dropped I made a note of where it dropped. After a few moments the handset went over to Orange 2g. I then drove back home. I must of drove at least 5 miles past the point I noted earlier before the Orange signal itself dropped and had to force the handset to Three myself.
This sounds similar to your issue and was with a Desire S….but you say you didnt have this with previous handsets. All very strange
Steve
I've had a Desire HD and a Sensation both on Three and never had issue on either of these.
There must be something different about the way the One X handles the switch of signal, or maybe it's just faulty.
Might try some other SIM's from other networks, if that doesn't work I'll get a replacement.

I have this phone second day and I see this signal problem as well, I got iphone 4s in Three and HTC One X in Three as well and in same place Iphone show me 3G connection and 3 bars, HTC show only one bar and sometime nothing.
How get update to1.28?
I check update via my phone and nothing show me
My phone have no 1.26

I'm on three and it never seems to switch to gsm just looses signal all together and takes ages to reconnect once I move location. this is a proper pain I've had the phone replaced three times changed sim still not got better I'm thinking its the radio version on this phone or some software related issue.
If you're phone is from Three you won't get the update until Three release it.
I did see on another thread that Three won't be releasing 1.28 as HTC are currently working on the next update. Don't know how true that is.
My phone is unbranded and unlocked to any network, which is why I got the update.
Think I'm going to get a replacement and see if that's any better, hope it's not a general issue with the one X having lower signal.

If you dial *#*#4636#*#* on your phone and select phone info you can select GSM only which is 2G, this really improves signal but because it's 2G you are stuck on really slow data speeds.
If that is the case and you've had 3 replacements, maybe it's worth holding out for the next update to see if that fixes the problem.
I'm a little uneasy about returning it for a replacement as I don't have any other problems with it (bad screen seal, banding on display or yellow display) I may end up with more problems with a replacement.

Is any chance change three rom on factory rom?
I had similar issues to what you are describing with yours on my original unlocked/unbranded HOX on T-Mobile. I had issues on top of the ones you mentioned where it was also saying I had a signal and had appeared to lock up and would just drop the mobile network and say at the bottomg of the screen "preparing sim".
Most the time I was stuck with putting it in and out of airplane mode to make calls, only for them to drop or fail all together.
This was on both 1.26 and 1.28 FW. In the end I took mine back and swapped it and the replacement has been perfect since. so it was without doubt a hardware fault in my case!
Good luck solving your problem, but I would suggest taking it back and getting a straight swap.

You can't change you ROM unless you unlock the Bootloader at HTCDev and this will void your warranty with HTC.
Three will release an update eventually, and 1.28 is no better signal wise for me than 1.26 was!!

Interesting, I too had the Preparing Sim message until I got a new SIM from Three, this seemed to fix this message but I am still having Signal Problems.
I think I'll follow your lead and go for a replacement, I have to use Airplane mode to force the signal to reconnect as well.
Thanks
I can confirm I have these problems. I'm on three but the phone was from Dialaphone and with orange but is unlocked. I have exactly the same problems as those been described. This is a very irritating problem that makes me miss calls and texts in my poor 3 signal area.

I think it might depend on location, in some areas the 2G signal (Three use Orange network for 2G) has been turned off. In my Area (South West England) I still have access to the 2G GSM Signal.
Obviously Three save a lot of money from turning off GSM and not paying Orange to use their network.
