Hi,
will Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 run on HTC Desire ? The background of this question is the new discovered dataleak in 99 % of all android based smartphones.
http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/99.7_of_android_devices_vulnerable_to_data_leak/
can we expect a 2.3.4 Gingerbread Rom or ist it not possible to port it to the HTC Desire ?
Gegards,
Frank
I think there are some custom ROMS based on 2.3.4 - mainly AOSP ones at the moment I think already.
I'd like to hope that when the official HTC Desire GB rom comes down it will be running the latest 2.3.4 rather than the current TEST ROM that was leaked of 2.3.3 - but also I'd like to hope it has a slightly updated Sense UI too - but only time will tell...

exactly that, only time will tell, I am looking everday for some news and still nothing...
Will everyone stop worrying about this!!!
You're only at risk if you use unsecured Wi-Fi hotspots. 3G is fine as are personal/work Wi-Fi so unless you're just dumb you won't be in any risk
My Desire runs fine with Cyanogen Mod 7 NB #77 which is Gingerbread 2.3.4 and there is no problem.
this thread is useless. there are already 2.3.4 roms out for the desire and hes linking to an article from a website that pretty much smears anything not apple.
The BBC have also covered the story but, again, it's just there to scare people
MIUI ROM is GB 2.3.4, for example:
MIUIXJ
Running it without probs, only FM Radio app is not there, but it will be fixed by original devs from miui China.
adamg's oxygen rom is also gingerbread 2.3.4

and honeycomb - honeycomb is fine
just look in the development section for anything with the numbers 2.3.4
why there are no official news on Gingerbread for desire ?

HTC are scared? no idea. HTC don't seem to release any news until last minute really.
All they have said so far is that there will be a Gingerbread update.

Hello every one, I've got a question (maybe already asked but I find nothing sorry) about de Desire:
My N1 was stolen a few weeks ago and I have the possibility to have a Desire. But the fact is that I don't want sense and I'd like to have the official Google OTA update, without waiting for HTC.
So my question is: is it possible to root the desire and install the same rom as on the N1?
Thanks by advance for the answers, and sorry for the english, I'm a poor french frog
Just look around the forum
If you look around in the htc desire development forum you'll find a lot of custom roms and how to's on rooting, s-off and theming.
This thread is in the wrong place
N1 ROms are essentially ASOP roms, they're all over this forum.
But if I take a custom rom, I won't be able to have the officials OTA Google updates, like it was with my N1, and that's what I want : /
see, the google updates are like cake, and the custom aosp updates here are like cake with chocolate sauce on top of it.
ok (I love cake so I love the image^^), if there's really no way I'll take a tour on the forum and check which ROM seems to be the best for me, thanks for the help.

althought the desire and n1 are similar there not the same, you cant just put the n1 rom on the desire so when google does an ota update, you'l magically get it on your desire too, the cake anology is good as generally the asop roms are more or less the n1 roms with tweeks to make them even better ( like overclocking etc) id recomend the defrost rom, it has ota updating built into the rom and am pretty sure as soon as gingerbread comes out we'l have it on the desire at the same time as the n1 people have it ( also you have the option of having a sense rom which is nice, always good to have options)

Crazy. You can NOT run N1 roms on the Desire
To OP: just use CyanogenMod

Hello!
I'm currently running Oxygen's excellent Gingerbread 2.0 RC6 on my Desire. It's been fine, although I notice many of the visual enhancements don't currently work - like screen on/off animation etc. I also get the Oxygen loading screen hang frequently.
Now, I can put up with these things IF there is a way to get the Sense UI onto the device while running Gingerbread... I have no idea if this is even possible or not!
Can someone please advise? Is there a launcher ROM that can be flashed over the top of Gingerbread that will give me the Sense UI goodies while giving me the other benefits of GB? Or am I limited to waiting for a modified Sense-based 2.3 ROM rather than an AOSP one such as Oxygen?
Appreciate you advice and input

Totally agree. I had the updated oxygen ROM and missed some of the sense features. COME ON HTC give us gingerbread with sense 2!!
Get the full version of launcherpro which has sense style Widgets for your homescreens. Then get the sense theme for the launcherbar at the bottom of the screen. Looks exactly the same without having to flash a sense rom.

They said so, but is is reasonable to assume that DesireHD and Desire Z get it first, then we are next.
That however could take a lot of time, I read something about September at the earliest.
Someone correct me please if I'm wrong.
Desire Gingerbread is coming around June time. No specifics as to whether DesireHD and Z get it first but it says they are all on the same schedule as the Incredible S whereas Desire S and Wildfire S will ship with 2.3
source: engadget.com/2011/02/27/htc-incredible-s-desire-hd-desire-z-and-original-desire-will-a/
That could take a while, which is why some of us are installing Gingerbread Roms in the 1st place
Probably will especially if you have to wait for your relevant carrier to tinker with it first. That's why I flashed custom. May go to official HTC rom if/ when this is leaked just depends how slow it is compared to CM 7 unless of course it has sense 2 (crosses fingers)
I'm running CM7 RC1 with Honeycomb Alva v4 theme with ADW EX and I'm loving the look of honeycomb. I hope the brilliant devs that works hard for our free roms can work their magic on the SDK. I wish I could do it, I'm going to start reading up on it nut I never have time so I'd be a cack dev lol. but I must say I'm looking forward to seeing sense on a gingerbread rom!!!

^The same ROM has a Sense port theme using the same method as you installed the Honeycomb theme
It doesn't have the Sense widgets and functionality though, quite obviously.

Can't find any answers on forums so here goes...will a future 2.3 OTA update for DHD be by carrier or phone manufacturer i.e by HTC direct.
I got mine p&g on 3 network but don't use the 3 sim, I use an o2...so how wld any OTA update arrive, do I need to keep putting 3 sim back in the phone from time to time or when I check for updates will it come from HTC direct?...I take it that it wldn't come from o2...
Thanks
**Emailed HTC..they say they wont be releasing any OTA update, it will come from carrier, and for me to contact 3
***Just spoke to 3...didnt expect much from them, according to their c/s call centre assistant in Mumbai, the latest version of Android 3 network has is 2.1...dimwit, I bought the phone from 3 and had 2.2 already on it, which he disputes..obviously he knows better than me who bought the phone and uses it
Have a look at the software build. If it's x.x.405.x then any updates will come from HTC directly. Otherwise you'll have to wait for the carrier to modify it first.

We are all new to it at some point but the whole process is actually a lot easier than it first sounds. Just read the instructions and FAQs until it's clear what you need to do. See my reply in the thread linked below to save you searching and to save me typing it all again!:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920238&page=2
As for things not working in custom ROMs, well that was maybe the case when the DHD was first released but it's certainly not the case now. Lets take Android Revolution HD ROM as an example - Everything works as it should and the performance of it blows all stock ROMs away.
There are other 100% working / stable / every day use ROMs too, like LeeDroid ROM which also gets great feedback from the people who use it.

Many thanks...maybe I will have a try...getting bored with Froyo cos of all the 2.3 hype so wld like to see what the fuss is about...cant read anything on android forums without them banging on about gingerbread this, gingerbread that...and an OTA from 3 or HTC isnt worth holding breath for
Ah... now most fully working DHD ROMs are also Froyo, but don't let that put you off as they will all be like night and day compared to stock Froyo. You jsut have to have a quick look at the release notes and change logs to see the differences.
However if you really do want a slice of tasty Gingerbread look at the CM7 builds, but this is where you will find things not working or unstable etc as they're experimental.
Another option to relieve your Froyo boredom is to flash one of the custom Froyo ROMs and then start customising it with mods and themes etc. See post 2 in the Android Revolution HD thread for some really cool stuff, and also in the first few posts of the LeeDroid thread.

We'll have to wait for HTC to release the official update, or wait for another model HTC to get 2.3 and then be ported over to DHD.
It will happen, we just have to be patient... something I learned waiting for the 2.1 update for Hero!
In think custom 2.2 would be better than stock 2.3 anyway. On the other hand, custom ROMs based on 2.3 are something to get excited about

HTC! there's potentially a lot of work with the framework and API changes from Froyo to gingerbread and I wouldn't expect personally to see a GB sense ROM until HTC have ported it
I had an original Hero a while ago and was using Modaco roms but that was over a year ago now before jumping to Palm Pre for a bit.
So I am totally new on modern hacks and concerning the DHD.
I know I need to downgrade and something called S-OFF and Visionary. However what I need to know is if I use a 2.3 Rom presumably from a Cyanogen source will I have full functionality? All Google Apps? Can I still use HTC Sense widgets if I choose too? Will HTCSense.com still work?
Thanks

Depends where you get it from, but on here most are full of bugs currently, I would wait until they are ironed out. No HTCSense.com won't work without the HTC Sense homescreen, but I would only worry about this if you REALLY need the service. Google Apps will work, and if they arent supplied they can be downloaded from the Market

does 2.3 bring with it marvelous battery life improvements?
I did all the nececssary and now I am succesfully running slightly modded cyanogen7 daily #5. Very stable actually no problems at all so far other than the Microbes live wall paper freezing and needing a reload

99.9% no, if Google makes update for us, they must make for many other Motophones who gets max 1 update, it's Moto politics.
official or not, whats the difference ?
just install CM7 or Miui be happy
They are better then MotoBlur

Totally agreed.
The only true benefit would be in kernel / modules ... but Motorola keep pushing the 2.6.32 kernel in every single device ... so, who cares ?!
Could anyone upload the Official Chinese 2.3 update to any filesharing site?

Hey guys Ive read that there are some issues using those roms, is it stable enough for use everyday I mean to a "simple not so geeky point of view.." Everything working? Are the softwares often installs, you know compatibility issues... Because I like it flawless im pretty demanding but its all what we want dont we? I mean cheap phones with lower specs than ours have Gingerbread running flawlessly, so why cant we. Calling all devs around here make us happy guys!
defy+ gingerblur can be ported on defy red lense.
does that sounds official for you?
the bug remains is because for now defy+ rom is the leaked one.
wait until defy+ released worldwide, so the devs could port it from the official releases.
anyway you could use CM7 for the GingerBread experience.
and it could be looks like gingerblur, if you install this theme for CM7.
