[Q] Gingerbread with HTC Sense? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I'm currently running Oxygen's excellent Gingerbread 2.0 RC6 on my Desire. It's been fine, although I notice many of the visual enhancements don't currently work - like screen on/off animation etc. I also get the Oxygen loading screen hang frequently.
Now, I can put up with these things IF there is a way to get the Sense UI onto the device while running Gingerbread... I have no idea if this is even possible or not!
Can someone please advise? Is there a launcher ROM that can be flashed over the top of Gingerbread that will give me the Sense UI goodies while giving me the other benefits of GB? Or am I limited to waiting for a modified Sense-based 2.3 ROM rather than an AOSP one such as Oxygen?
Appreciate you advice and input

I sort of expected that would be the answer...
...but BOO HISS anyways
Thanks for your reply!

Totally agree. I had the updated oxygen ROM and missed some of the sense features. COME ON HTC give us gingerbread with sense 2!!

Get the full version of launcherpro which has sense style Widgets for your homescreens. Then get the sense theme for the launcherbar at the bottom of the screen. Looks exactly the same without having to flash a sense rom.

They said so, but is is reasonable to assume that DesireHD and Desire Z get it first, then we are next.
That however could take a lot of time, I read something about September at the earliest.
Someone correct me please if I'm wrong.

Desire Gingerbread is coming around June time. No specifics as to whether DesireHD and Z get it first but it says they are all on the same schedule as the Incredible S whereas Desire S and Wildfire S will ship with 2.3
source: engadget.com/2011/02/27/htc-incredible-s-desire-hd-desire-z-and-original-desire-will-a/

That could take a while, which is why some of us are installing Gingerbread Roms in the 1st place

Probably will especially if you have to wait for your relevant carrier to tinker with it first. That's why I flashed custom. May go to official HTC rom if/ when this is leaked just depends how slow it is compared to CM 7 unless of course it has sense 2 (crosses fingers)

I'm running CM7 RC1 with Honeycomb Alva v4 theme with ADW EX and I'm loving the look of honeycomb. I hope the brilliant devs that works hard for our free roms can work their magic on the SDK. I wish I could do it, I'm going to start reading up on it nut I never have time so I'd be a cack dev lol. but I must say I'm looking forward to seeing sense on a gingerbread rom!!!

^The same ROM has a Sense port theme using the same method as you installed the Honeycomb theme
It doesn't have the Sense widgets and functionality though, quite obviously.

[Q] Is there a viable Gingerbread 2.3 Rom for Desire HD yet?

I had an original Hero a while ago and was using Modaco roms but that was over a year ago now before jumping to Palm Pre for a bit.
So I am totally new on modern hacks and concerning the DHD.
I know I need to downgrade and something called S-OFF and Visionary. However what I need to know is if I use a 2.3 Rom presumably from a Cyanogen source will I have full functionality? All Google Apps? Can I still use HTC Sense widgets if I choose too? Will HTCSense.com still work?
Thanks

Depends where you get it from, but on here most are full of bugs currently, I would wait until they are ironed out. No HTCSense.com won't work without the HTC Sense homescreen, but I would only worry about this if you REALLY need the service. Google Apps will work, and if they arent supplied they can be downloaded from the Market

does 2.3 bring with it marvelous battery life improvements?
I did all the nececssary and now I am succesfully running slightly modded cyanogen7 daily #5. Very stable actually no problems at all so far other than the Microbes live wall paper freezing and needing a reload

[ATTN] Nexus 2.3.3 OTA is live

It's official!
OTA url. Do not flash this zip. It is for ROM cookers only.

UPDATE
I've just noticed that this thread has been moved from the development section. For those who aren't aware of the significance of this update, it is useful to us Desire owners because it will allow us to use stock, AOSP based Gingerbread ROMs with improved stability, graphics performance and battery life. It will also also give ROM makers more straightforward access to camera hardware.
goodbye bootloops!!
Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) update now rolling out to Nexus S and Nexus One. Be patient, may take a few weeks for OTA to complete.
this is news.
a good news. I can't wait to try it .
Great news, here we,HTC DesirE users can not wait to download via OTA now...
That's some great news, but since I read that HTC (pocketnow.com/android/gingerbread-coming-to-htc-desire-this-spring-or-summer) is waiting for the Desire S to come out first, we Desire users might have to wait quite a while before getting an official update!?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yes, that's true... if you have some sort of love affair with HTC Sense!
I've the new Sense (Froyo build) from RCMixHD on my Desire and have to say... it's okay but man is there a lot of HTC crap running on it!
Since most of us are running Cyanogenmod, Oxygen, etc... it's great news for us! We'll have a nice clean ROM in a matter of weeks (if not days). So I don't see how HTC dragging their feet matters at all. And just so you know, another reason they (HTC) might be slow to upgrade is because the new Desire S and Wildfire S models are coming, and they've changed so little on them that I'm sure they want to give users more (artificial) reasons to update. Thank god for our Rom Chefs!
I'm waiting for Sense personally, stock Android is fugly - even with different launchers. Only one remotely good is the MIUI launcher

Stock Android is ugly? Look at my Signature
In my opinion Sense is more beautiful than stock Android, but at least Gingerbread has a black bar instead of the hideous grey bar in 2.2 and also the icons are a bit nicer. Combine 2.3 with LauncherProPlus and a few other tweaks and it looks good. Altough what I really don't understand is why the stock dialer sucks so much. Unable to call a contact by pressing the first few letters of a name... Phones did that already at the turn of the millennium, maybe even before that. (Yes, I have DialerOne)
Really good news for all of us indeed!! Sense and clean Android followers will have our update, and all (our at least most of it) the issues will be fixed!!
Cheers for that!!

Hopefully it is possible to port the Desire S Android 2.3.x ROM to the old HTC Desire. I think this should work much better then the Desire HD port..

Subjective - personally the fat, dark (but not quite black) borders in Sense apps were something I was glad to see the back of.
In fact the aesthetics of Sense were a major motivation in ditching it (I stopped using the Sense launcher within a couple of days, well before rooting).
It's all a matter of taste - but at least we do have options

What is the best sense and non sense Roms out?

Right now I'm running cyanogenmod 7 nightlies but getting kinda bored with the same old thing
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I love HTC Sense, its so professional looking & has convenient widgets.
I am currently using the HTC Desire Z ROM on my Incredible. It is a port of the actual ROM used on the Desire Z, so it has a very nice customizable menu instead of the basic "+" icon. And it is light & runs pretty smoothly also.
Found here!
But there are several other good Sense ROM's available.
Magnolia is a very nice looking version of Sense UI Here...
Different styles of Sense UI:
Nil's Business Sense Here...
Incredibly Re-Engineered Here...
Warm TwoPointTwo Here...
I also recommend using the attached file to flash over your newly installed ROM, it will wake your Incredible without needing to press the power button, using the Optical Touch device instead.
Good luck & hope you find the ROM that is right for you.

Like it was said above, there are quite a few of them out there. But the best one is all about which one YOU like using best. Chcek them all out, make backups, and see which one has the features YOU like the most. Everyone here has their favorite preference, now its time to get yours
My opinion: Best Sense - Incredibly Re-Engineered
My opinion: Best non-Sense - CM7
Once I've used a Z rom I can't use any other sense rom anymore I'd recommend Uber Z. Link in my sig.
For AOSP I'd have to recommend the same old CM7.
There are quite a few good sense roms but I was always partial to Skyraider. The developer has stated that there will only be one more update to it, but its fast, stable, and has quite a few modifications that can be done while still staying true to the overall sense theme.
As for non-sense I have to go with CM7 too. Fast and stable and extremely customizable.
Try as many as possible and throw some different kernels in there too. That's half the fun of rooting.

I'm another supporter of the SkyRaider 3.5 ROM
There's a bunch of really great ROM's here, so I'm sure you'll find something you like.
I like Sense ROMs apps, like the camera and people/phone app look and function much better than non-sense ROMs. With that said, non-sense ROMs are so much faster in my experience.
Best Sense ROM: Magnolia, the developer is seriously committed to providing the highest quality ROM to his users.
Best AOSP ROM: CM7
Magnolia!!!!

i also love sense and am using my first ROM (myn's). i love it and really dont even care to change to anything else at all. Very similar to stock with some enhancements. perfect.
I am a fan of Sense roms. I like Warm 2.2 and Incredibly Re-engineered personally, and was using the Z variant of Warm until yesterday when I switched to try IR Z. I love the speed of both of the Z roms, and the new Sense 2.0 is much smoother than the original.

They have access to htcsense.com which is cool, also they have the super quick reboot. Its generally faster, and is what most of the devs seem to be moving to using.
Skyraider 3.5 is my favorite sense rom. ihtfp is a great developer and maintains very stable and functional roms. Used to be my daily driver and might be once again when the new version comes out.
However, for AOSP I can't stress enough how awesome MIUI has been. It's like a completely different OS but no less beautiful and functional than what we've come to expect. I especially love the built in theme manager. It makes switching things up super easy. The launcher is really smooth too, something I could not achieve on any 2.3 rom no matter which launcher I've used.
Unfortunately MIUI isn't gingerbread yet, but they're going to start releasing gingerbread versions to phones this Friday with a fancy new UI. Can't wait!

Thanks Blockhead. I am new to the incredible but have experience with the droid x. They seems to be different mainly due to the locked bootloader on the x. When flashing roms there is no talk of s-off, radio, kernals, ect. I do have a question will some roms not boot because someone's system is s-on? I ask this because i previously rooted using unrevoked3 and have the superuser icon in app drawer but am still s-on (shown in hboot) i created a backup in clockworkmod recovery. Then i tried to flash Incredibly Reengineered rom and it installed fine but when i restarted it just stayed at HTC boot screen, i waited over 10 min pulled battery and same thing happened where it would not go past the HTC boot screen. I did wipe data, cache, and delvk cache.

What is the best Gingerbread 2.3 ROM with Sense 3.0

Hi, as above I would like to find out which is the best 2.3 Gingerbread ROM with Sense 3.0.
I have updated like probably most to the 2.3 Gingerbread OTA update but Sense 3.0 is missing and probably won't come from HTC seeing as they have stated 3.0 needs the hardware which the DHD isn't in their opinion. But as we know that's bull crap as the DHD can run Sense 3.0.
Just would like to get opinions from frequent ROM users and possibly devs as what's the best one to be looking at as I'm completely new to custom ROM's.

well if you insist then... After using RCmix for a while, I flashed an i00, and is working as my daily driver.... no operational bugs so far...

Can anyone confirm do both the Kingdom and i00 ROM's have root access already? They both look excellent so I wasn't sure. I'm now looking at ROM's as the 2.3 update all us stock users had really is missing Sense 3.0 so these ROM's actually are better by the looks than what HTC themselves give us

Can either the Kingdom or i00 rom be used for daily use yet?
Just I noticed some functionality like srs isn't working from the bug list. Just wondering which is the closest to perfection?
I have tried both, and the latest Kingdom release beats i00 hands down.
Kingdom's 'Android' widget ratios are just about spot on, so none-Sense widgets display correctly. This is a major issue on i00's, and the deal winner for me.
Very stable (no random reboots or f/c's), good battery life and fine for every day use. The autoinstall is an absolute must.
I tried Kingdom - gallery widget is out of line to the left, Twitter widget not working, other widgets far to small as its for a larger screen, video camera and sound is awful and not sure how that latter part can have optimization for DHD as certainly can't record 1080p on a DHD as it already struggles with 720p in stock.

Good question, I was actually wondering the same, while android 4.0 is here working on this phone, I feel sense 4 makes it a bit sluggish....

That is correct. I like Sense 3.5 on my old Desire S and I think it's possibble to have custom sense 3.5 running on 4.0.3. that would be awesome to have Sense 3.5+ICS features.
Android 2.3.x with Sense 3.5 is good
I think it is batter to have Android 2.3.x with Sense 3.5 for Htc One V, to perform better then Android 4.0.x, so i hope there is any developer the port it from Desire S or Desire HD

We're not picky, we just want to have more options. For the CM9 fans there should be CM9 ROM and for the Android 2.3/Sense 3.6 there should be ROM too. I strongly feel that the hardwer of HTC One V is designed for Sense 3.6. HTC made a mistake by porting Sense 4.0 to this smartphone in first place because we didn't get the full Sense 4.0 but something similar to "beta" i.e HTC customized the Sense 4.0 specially for the One V which resulted with losing some genuine Sense features like the Leap view.

When asking for stuff, make sure to get your nomenclacture correct
Froyo / eclair (Android 2.1 / 2.2) had "sense", referred to as "old sense" or 1.9
Gingerbread (Android 2.3) had sense 2.1, 3.0 and 3.5 (the latest referred to as "runny" ROMs)
Handsets that shipped with gingerbread, and were then upgraded to ics came with sense 3.6 HTC wanted the same user experience as 3.0 / 3.5 for its "older" handsets
Ice cream sandwhich (Android 4.0 +) sense 3.6 (upgraded gb phones), sense 4.0 lite (One V), and sense 4.0 full
So, NO handsets, as in NONE have gingerbread and sense 3.6......ZERO.
I can understand asking for:
1. Gingerbread / sense 3.5
2. ICS with sense 3.6
3. ICS with a sense 3.6 / 4.0 hybrid (like the old 2.1 /3.0 hybrids)
4. ICS with full sense 4.0
But not gingerbread and sense 3.6........doesn't exist.
I have been running sense since the beginning, literally, the "cube" on the HTC touch, then manilla 2D, 3D, sense as in winmo sense ala HD2, then Android sense. When talking about sense, proof read and make sure your not mixing up the varients and what they can run on. You cannot ask for a "port" for something that doesn't exist.

yes. no sense. if you want sense. stick with sense 4. it is much more optimized than any other older sense, I can tell you that! but if you want a faster phone with no lag, go with stock android with no user interface. install a great launcher like Nova and enjoy android experience how was meant to be!
We do not need Sense... All we need is stock working Android 4 ICS build and cm9.. If someone want to help me port that Rom please pm me.. I do not have the phone yet.

Yes as we need
1. Gingerbread / sense 3.5
4. ICS with full sense 4.0
any one from them, whatever easy to port with full function.
but we like to have full animated Sense as it was i think option 1. Gingerbread with Sense 3.5 as best for HTC One V and compatible with hardware.
I like choice as much as anyone, any "flashaholic" does. The more the better.
There is always the possibility of "rooted stock" that you can add flashable zips to. Examples would be added leap view (available on the desire), rc team tweaks, optimo tweaks etc which offer different animation on / off, different Rosie (that's the name for the sense launcher btw) mods, flashable themes (requires deodexed ROMs), etc.
My so called list was the various sense / android combos that could work on the One V hardware, by no means meant to be definitive. I have not heard of many people wanting to downgrade their version of android though, sense 3.6 is basically sense 3.5 reworked for ICS.
Shubbysomethinorother (sorry Dude!) was a talented dev on the Desire, I have always enjoyed his ROMs. Cpk5 (sorry if I got that one wrong too) is a talented themer. Asking guys like that for ROM extras like flashable zips that may or may not work on a rooted stock ROM is the best, imho way to go for most as it allows you to add the features you want, and ignore the rest. No one ROM will satisfy everyone.
A device with alot of dev support tends to get this, if not, be nice to the devs you have! Politely asking for features, and not demanding etas etc is a good way to start.
Good luck guys, myself I keep visiting this phone at my local store comparing it to my Desire. It's cheap enough off contract to make a nice development toy while waiting for a One S with real storage, or the "two" series!

Just take the plunge. I bought one as a stop gap until the next HTC Nexus device (hopefully released November as per the rumours). Until then, the One V is great. Just needs an AOSP ROM really.

yeah! stock android gingerbread or icecreamsandwich would be great. htc sense is consuming too much RAM on HTC One V.
