Hello every one, I've got a question (maybe already asked but I find nothing sorry) about de Desire:
My N1 was stolen a few weeks ago and I have the possibility to have a Desire. But the fact is that I don't want sense and I'd like to have the official Google OTA update, without waiting for HTC.
So my question is: is it possible to root the desire and install the same rom as on the N1?
Thanks by advance for the answers, and sorry for the english, I'm a poor french frog
Just look around the forum
If you look around in the htc desire development forum you'll find a lot of custom roms and how to's on rooting, s-off and theming.
This thread is in the wrong place
N1 ROms are essentially ASOP roms, they're all over this forum.
But if I take a custom rom, I won't be able to have the officials OTA Google updates, like it was with my N1, and that's what I want : /
see, the google updates are like cake, and the custom aosp updates here are like cake with chocolate sauce on top of it.
ok (I love cake so I love the image^^), if there's really no way I'll take a tour on the forum and check which ROM seems to be the best for me, thanks for the help.

althought the desire and n1 are similar there not the same, you cant just put the n1 rom on the desire so when google does an ota update, you'l magically get it on your desire too, the cake anology is good as generally the asop roms are more or less the n1 roms with tweeks to make them even better ( like overclocking etc) id recomend the defrost rom, it has ota updating built into the rom and am pretty sure as soon as gingerbread comes out we'l have it on the desire at the same time as the n1 people have it ( also you have the option of having a sense rom which is nice, always good to have options)

Crazy. You can NOT run N1 roms on the Desire
To OP: just use CyanogenMod

Hi all,
I'm a newbie of the Androids world. (and also in HTCs one).
I'm coming from the world of Nokia hacking and modding and here, with all the mods changed, I feel a bit (just not to say totally) lost.
I bought this week a new HTC Desire, I feel very happy and proud of my choice, the AMOLED screen is something superlative.
But, coming to my problem:
I discovered that to join the wifi hotspot in my university i need to set the proxy and other stuff which i can do only with root privilege and other apps, so I decided that is just arrived the time to f**k up the guarantee and install a rom one time for all, at the beginning so i must not reinstall many apps, settings and other stuffs.
I'm searching for a ROM which is the most possible similar to the original Sense FroYo that is now installed on the phone. But at the moment for me I think it's to hard to be able to recognize the differences between two ROMs, so...
Which is better for me to choose in the huge list of post #1 of the "Desire Index - Everything is here" thread?
Obviously it must have the root capabilities, ap2sd and..? (i'm totally ignorant in which are the starter-important mod)
thx for you help and sorry for my poor english..

LeeDroid! But I'm biased, been using it a couple of months and it rocks, full Sense ROM, A2SD+ (need an ext partition on your SD card for this), themeable, overclockable if you want. I've tried other but nothing has persuaded me to switch.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997
this one is all stock but for the root access, but if you root, why just go for the same as you got?
Invest a few bucks in titanium backup or mybackup pro and rom manager and try some of the top roms like AuraxTSense, LeeDroid, both with Sense as you know it, or Miui and OpenDesire which run alternative launchers.
There is never just flash one rom and be happy once you have set yor foot in here
By far the greatest of all is LeeDorid.Lots of good features and a lot of updates !
Modaco Custom ROM
Should be as good as Leedroid or even better in my opinion ;-)

MIUI 10.0.29 is honest to god stunning, its fast, overclockable, excellent batterylife and the whole UI is a nice overhaul. Its clean and everything has been designed for use, the system menu has been re-organized for the better making it easier and clearer to get to all options. They have also done things like add settings to the notification panel, added kintetic scrolling (so things bounce) FM radio re-skinned all major apps. The lockscreen has also been changed to a custom lockscreen which has quick access to phone and messaging, barring that i'd suggest trying DeFrost, he does good builds of CyanogenMod, or Cyanogen Mod 6.1 rc1. Not a huge fan of CM6, its seems as slow as sense roms on my phone. OD and DeFrost dont seem to suffer this issue however.
Mr favourite non-Miui rom is OpenDesire, theyr quick and dont come with bloatware r crap pre-installed, but Adam_g has been absent lately.
For 'sense' builds try leeDroid (imo bloated with tonnes of crap), Modaco Custom Rom (www.desire.modaco.com) or Alex-V sense rom. Theres also AuraxTSense but its hideous. Imo for a good sense rom try a modaco rom with a sense kernel such as vorkKernel, or 'HAVS 2.6.32 for Sense Roms V5' by richardtrip

CyanogenMOD is one of the fastest ROM and the one with the most fixes and updates! Dont say bad things about CyanogenMOD Rom´s !! Without him this Community would be nothing!
Sense or AOSP? Minimalist or Feature-Packed? Depends on your personal needs...
You could start with a rooted stock, after a week try Leedroid/RCmixHD/MIUI and next week CM6.
Or you just get DSIXDA's Kitchen, learn some ADB and Shell Stuff and make your own ROM.
Go for cyanogen to get the best android experience...
This post might fit better in the Desire Q and A and not the Development section mate
this is not a post for the development section, in future please reasd the forum rules before posting
I've tried Leedroid (SENSE) and DeFrost (NON-SENSE).
Both are really good but after some experience I've decided to stick with non sense ROMs. They are by far faster but that eventually comes at the price of some higher battery drain.
DeFrost FTW !
You must be thinking, i'll find the best and most popular one and i wont be flashing again in the next few months/weeks. You're wrong. You come here, you'll be flashing all roms as the clocks ticking.
I have tried all except MIUI and Defrost so far. and am sticking on OpenDesire for the longest AOSP rom and Modaco R8 for the sense ROM.
But my personal choice;
CyanogenMod : Be it Nightly, stable or RC, i love it to the core! Best AOSP rom ever. I tried them all and they are super fast! The reason i didnt use it currently because i waited for the stable 6.1. Hehe~~ Love the nightlies before RC1 got released though.
OpenDesire : The dev(AdamG) used to have minor updates almost everyday but now, very2 long time before an update, meaning it is at the most stable version now. and it is true cuz i didnt believe it at first( I used to use the older versions and it still have some bugs) but now it is the best for me. Best after CM(cant deny CM, they are the master here).
LeeDroid : Well i've tried all Sense roms already, and this seems the most stable and fast(though i found out it become slower over time, my fault for installing so many apps maybe). I used to love NeXTSense by Neo, but when it got changed to AuraxtSense, i jumped to Lee.
I'm sorry for posting in the wrong section, but i wasn't sure where to post in the different areas.
Well, you named different roms, but which are the differences (explained to a nearly-noob)?
I'm searching for something with the same interface of the normale roms, but purified from all the (in)utilities. In fact a clean and fast rom, in which THEN i decide what i like to install and personalize...
If I can make a representation, a roms with no apps which are not native (facebook, twitter, opera and all the others), but with only the things that you nedd as a basis for all the rest.
Lol the op will still have a hard time deciding. XD
The best way for you to choose which Rom to use is to download and test each one individually. Hope you get ORD btw

I'd like to test them all, but at the moment i'm under exams and for next 5 weeks don't have enough time to test anything.
so I was searching for a direct suggestion explaining what will change and what will not change..
If you want a rooted rom similar to your current one, why don't you just use unrevoked to root your current rom?

MIUI! or Defrost!
If you want speed, then go for Cyanogenmod 6.1, DeFroST or OpenDesire. If you want a nice UI, too, you have to put a theme on it or use a Rom like RCMixHD, AuraxTSense or smth. like that.
a-ehm...are there ROMs that haven't been named yet? LOL

easy, test it while you go. thats what i did.
Here's my timeline(some are examples);
I'm meeting my girlfriend tomorrow, lets bring LeeDroid! and yeah i did it, i manage to test all features and stability while I'm in the bus travelling from my place to her(took 8 hours in the bus). i screwed up while playing around though, the phone didnt boot so i had to restore nandroid of my modaco R8 back...haha~~
This weekend is examination time(yeah seriously no joke), so last week i flashed OpenDesire. Now i'm still using it. done exploring it in a day though, and keeping it longer than i imagined since i love it.
Presentation week, damn it this week was very busy and i tried Cyanogenmod Nightly 149. Love it. but no themes for it so i flashes CM 6.0.2...but aah too many gallery crash for me so i'm back to OpenDesire.
Well those are my moments, you'll be done exploring in 2 days at max for a rom though. Be sure to test all primary function first before you begin to like them. I did all in a day only. shouldnt be too hard.
Can't find any answers on forums so here goes...will a future 2.3 OTA update for DHD be by carrier or phone manufacturer i.e by HTC direct.
I got mine p&g on 3 network but don't use the 3 sim, I use an o2...so how wld any OTA update arrive, do I need to keep putting 3 sim back in the phone from time to time or when I check for updates will it come from HTC direct?...I take it that it wldn't come from o2...
Thanks
**Emailed HTC..they say they wont be releasing any OTA update, it will come from carrier, and for me to contact 3
***Just spoke to 3...didnt expect much from them, according to their c/s call centre assistant in Mumbai, the latest version of Android 3 network has is 2.1...dimwit, I bought the phone from 3 and had 2.2 already on it, which he disputes..obviously he knows better than me who bought the phone and uses it
Have a look at the software build. If it's x.x.405.x then any updates will come from HTC directly. Otherwise you'll have to wait for the carrier to modify it first.

We are all new to it at some point but the whole process is actually a lot easier than it first sounds. Just read the instructions and FAQs until it's clear what you need to do. See my reply in the thread linked below to save you searching and to save me typing it all again!:

As for things not working in custom ROMs, well that was maybe the case when the DHD was first released but it's certainly not the case now. Lets take Android Revolution HD ROM as an example - Everything works as it should and the performance of it blows all stock ROMs away.
There are other 100% working / stable / every day use ROMs too, like LeeDroid ROM which also gets great feedback from the people who use it.

Many thanks...maybe I will have a try...getting bored with Froyo cos of all the 2.3 hype so wld like to see what the fuss is about...cant read anything on android forums without them banging on about gingerbread this, gingerbread that...and an OTA from 3 or HTC isnt worth holding breath for
Ah... now most fully working DHD ROMs are also Froyo, but don't let that put you off as they will all be like night and day compared to stock Froyo. You jsut have to have a quick look at the release notes and change logs to see the differences.
However if you really do want a slice of tasty Gingerbread look at the CM7 builds, but this is where you will find things not working or unstable etc as they're experimental.
Another option to relieve your Froyo boredom is to flash one of the custom Froyo ROMs and then start customising it with mods and themes etc. See post 2 in the Android Revolution HD thread for some really cool stuff, and also in the first few posts of the LeeDroid thread.

We'll have to wait for HTC to release the official update, or wait for another model HTC to get 2.3 and then be ported over to DHD.
It will happen, we just have to be patient... something I learned waiting for the 2.1 update for Hero!
In think custom 2.2 would be better than stock 2.3 anyway. On the other hand, custom ROMs based on 2.3 are something to get excited about

HTC! there's potentially a lot of work with the framework and API changes from Froyo to gingerbread and I wouldn't expect personally to see a GB sense ROM until HTC have ported it
Ok so here is my dilemma.
I have been waiting for an update and still not got 2.3 and now I have given up. I have used cyanogenmod before so thought maybe that was an option but never really used the extras and hated the bugs. I currently never user HTC sense stuff so I am now wondering if there is a pure Android only 2.3 Rom/ruu for the dhd and does anyone have experiences with it?

bugs in cyanogenmod?currently? everything goes smoothly in CM7xx
i think that can judge by yourself...
it deppends.. you are a sense lover?
you don´t want or need root access?
etc...Then with this rom (official) it is sufficient
but i tried a oficial ruu vs leedroid (example) and leedroid gb,, its soooo much fast than the official RUU... and more advantages

There is a GB ROM that is pure bar root as well as Android Revolution which is highly recommended (although I prefer LeeDroid) and whilst visually you'll not tell the difference it does have plenty of themes, add-ons etc. on the development forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=765
I use CM7.0.3 and have found no bugs at all. Perhaps you flashed a nightly.
[EDIT] Dang!! Sergi beat me to it.
I have not tried cm7 yet but have tried 5 and 6 before on other phones and know that it is never 100% stable. I just wondered if a.basic stock version of Android would be better or not.
As I said iam not to bothered about sense. Only.thing I will miss is the contact sync stuff.

The customised Sense based ROMs are MORE stable thus "better".
CM6 and cm7 for me have been 100% stable for me. Never had a system fc or random reboot but won't argue with you about it. I can only tell you how it is on the DHD (and Hero) now. I'll say no more.
I used CM6 on my HD2 before my kid decided to unplug it from the charger and throw it onto the kitchen floor and break it, and let me tell you, it was the best android experience I had on a phone. Now that I have an Inspire 4G, I've had CM7 since the wonderful devs here got to root it, and it just blows my mind on how better and stable this thing is, as a matter of fact, I recommend it to anyone of my friends that own any android phone. So go ahead and try it, play with it, the worst thing that can happen is that you don't like it and go for a Sense ROM instead.

They are all faster then the stock version. And the support in the threads is great.
This is probably as close as you can get
Hey there, here are some ROMs that I thought you might like to try. I had the same dilemma as you. I wanted a stock android 2.3 ROM, so I searched around but to no avail. Then I found these ROMs. Both are Android 2.3.3 and based on CM 7 but have the stock android interface. Check them out! In my opinion the question is not "Witch is the best Android 2.3 rom for HTC Desire ?", it is " Witch of these Android 2.3 roms is more suitable for me ?"
I say that becouse i try all the roms from the launch of HTC Desire until now and i like all of them. I`ve had miui rom for like an haf a year at the start, becouse i didn`t like so much Android 2.2 froyo, then i migrate to the cook of devs around XDA, and CM7, Oxygen also.
I think that, when you have a free day, you should try these roms: MIUI, CM7, the one made by baadnewz, it`s much stable than the others for now, the one made by Alex (i like his roms from when he start doing stuff for HTC Desire).
I think these is the big categories made by me.
Personaly i like and use for now the one made by baadnewz (the stable v1.0.8)
If youd like effects you shoud try MIUI first.
If youd like simplicity and speed you shoud try CM7.
If youd like sense and a little speed you shoud try the one made by baadnewz.
Without anger, i apreciate all the work from all the devs around here. I have a big respect upon them (i`m not able to do anything then flash a rom )
This is just my opinion.
MIUI of course
I think the question is incorrect. Everyone chooses what he likes, what fits his needs more.
Want latest HTC Sense, that was not designed for Desire, but theoretically can run there - go for RCMixS
Want slim and quick but naked ROM - go for Oxigen
What pros of CM I don't know. Basically it's like fat Oxygen, with added features.
Despite they look different, but have very similar concept of UI. MIUI has different approach, which for my taste is much more successful. As it claims on MIUI official website, it takes best of Android and iPhone. Totally agree. Tried latest RCMixS after I tested MIUI and couldn't keep it even couple days, returned back to MIUI.
But it's of course my opinion.
Non-existent!

Sorry, but there's no such thing as "the best ROM" for any device. There's ROM's you like and ROM's you don't. That's like asking what's the best film, or best music track, or best food. Everyone has their own opinion which is why life is so much fun!
Personally, I've been using Baadnewz InsertCoin Nightly for weeks (now on v43). Superb Gingerbread ROM and lot's of great features from Sense 3 too
I prefer insertcoin. Very fast, no lags, bugs - everything is ok
This is Development forum and I believe this thread needs to be moved.
And I rather prefer Oxygen Everyone basically likes different ROM, but better one is with smaller amount of bugs

I´m addicted to InsertCoin too.

But i suggest, you download 2-3 ROM´s you "like", and install them, and find out which one is Great for you

stop spamming here its a dev section
Since I got the phone with Sense on it I take preference to Sense ROMS, I have also tried MIUI and AOSP ROMS like Cyanogen and GingerVillain all of them offer something that the other would be lacking.
So for me out of the 3 variants these are what I use,
• Sense ROM: Reflex S
• AOSP ROM: GingerVillain
• MIUI ROM: MIUI XJ
I use all of them and I change every few weeks when I feel for a change of scenery, they all for are the best ROM because they are made by the best developers.
As for the BEST ROM for you, thats is your decision!!!
A very generic question in a wrong section.
Hi,
I think this post is usefull so different users can state why they choose this or that ROM.
In my case I currently use MIUI (from XJ) mostly because that ROM is fast, has a very nice interface, the menus are very different from stock android, the phone/dial and messages apps are great. However sometimes I get some FCs in Camera app so sometimes I like to install the Leedroid Sense ROM as I also like he Sense UI. However in the last Leedroid ROMs the notifications area is too transparent so some notifications are hard to see (not sure if you can change that) so I get back to MIUI.
After reading this thread I'm now going to try the insertcoin ROM and maybe the CM7. The only thing with non sense roms is the phone/dial app, even apps like Go Contacts are not as fast and usefull as the one with sense or MIUI.
Of course there's no such thing as the best ROM, but for each person there are some ROMS that are better.
Cheers.
There is no best rom. It depends on personal preferences.

Ok so change the question a bit. Whats the fastest rom "Benchmark wise" the fastest i have found is oxygen 2.1.3 all others are slightly slower. Also another question i have is can you flash things from one gb rom to another like for example "Volume button music track skip?" from cm7 to gingervillian?
i know this will be something that you are probably already seek of reading but i really would like some answers.
I have a new desire z , i already did the tutorial to root and s-off the phone, now i would like to know what roms do you guys recommend me to install.
please give options for roms with and without sense.
thanks!
1) Whatever looks good to you
2) Whatever meets your performance/feature requirements.
Unless you specify what you are looking for in a ROM, its hard to narrow down. There are tons of these threads and the common answer is "try some".
Not trying to be a jerk, but it really comes down to what you want/like.

I've tried the ICS roms and I'm just not satisfied with them as a dailey driver yet. They'll get there, my biggest thing is the glitchy cameras. I'm excited for the time when ICS roms are 100% working.
I've tried just about all the roms out there, except sense 4.0. I keep finding myself going between CM7 and Virtuous Glite. I like the performance and customization of ILWT and I like the long battery of Glite.
I like that ILWT seems to be the only CM based rom that has a GPS fix.
I really like sense, but they're too laggy for me so far. Maybe, I just haven't found the right one?
The question of "what is the best/favorite ROM" gets asked a couple times a week. Just browse through this forum and you will find plenty of threads with opinions on ROMs.
As already mentioned, everyone has different needs and tastes. What is one person likes, may not be the best for you. Just do some reading, and you will find the benefits and features of the various ROMs, then pick one from there.
Just flashed this mod : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1495255
I love it, but having an issue with the wifi with 2.0.
Good luck!

Well, basically, ILWT is CM7 on steroids. Many optimizations for battery life/performance.
