http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_HD:_Rooting
Taken from cyanogenmidwiki for the desire hd
lashing the Engineering HBoot (Optional)
The Engineering HBoot is NOT required to run CyanogenMod on the HTC Desire HD and NOT recommend to flash unless you absolutely know what you are doing & what the Engineering HBoot does to the device, due to a bad flash can brick the device, proceed with caution. 1. Download the Engineering HBoot: Download md5:b2c8834905bfa2349f5223077493140a
2. Unzip the Engineering HBoot to the same folder as adb (the /platform-tools folder with the Android SDK folder). 3. Connect the HTC Desire HD to the computer via USB. 4. On the computer, open terminal and type the following commands:
adb push hboot-eng.img /data/local
5. This next step could severely damage the HTC Desire HD. Using the incorrect file could cause irreparable damage, making the phone nothing more than a brick. Type the next command in the Terminal Emulator:
su
dd if=/data/local/hboot-eng.img of=/dev/block/
mmcblk0p18
6. At this point the Engineering HBoot is now install on the HTC Desire HD.

Read or brick.
you dont do that with a device thats s-on, there is an iso and you burn it to cd and boot, plug in the device and let it doe its thing

Why do you want s-off? Just for fun I think..U dont need it if u dont know nothing about MD5, fastboot, etc..U will brick ur phone of course
I was wondering the same when I did this. Instructions arn't that great (at least not on AlphaRev's site). Just download the reflash utility and then you boot it as an OS. It runs off TinyCore.
if you use the forum post created for alpharev it tells you all you need to know

I have written an extensive article on this, which you can find here:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/gain-s-off-on-htc-desire-gsm-with-alpharev-1-8-custom-hboot/
I used this method to gain S-OFF on the Desire that I am using and decided to write a guide for newbies on it, after going through a lot of guides here and elsewhere, where the writers assumed the reader knew much of the stuff already.
i dont see whats so hard about the current guides
BURN THE ALPHAREV.ISO TO CD
PUT IT IN PC
BOOT VIA CD
WAIT TILL PROMPTED TO CONNECT DEVICE
CONNECT DEVICE
UNPLUG DEVICE WHEN FINISHED
its literally that !!! whats difficult
if you find that difficult sell phone and sell computer as you cant boot from cd

Howdy:
Here's the deal.
I need to flash a pd98img.zip or a nandroid backup from fastboot. Can anyone tell me what the commands are once my phone's serial number appears after entering 'fastboot devices'?
Here's why. The phone isn't reading the sd card. Might be hardware, I'm not sure but I want to flash a stock rom and find out.
The phone is eng s off and radio s off super cid blah yadda blah......
I've access to cwm recovery 3.x... and the bootloader but there's no rom on the phone so it won't boot past the Htc splash screen (unless selecting recovery from the bootloader) and when I use an ruu with it plugged into the usb with bootloader connection the ruu says there isn't enough battery and stops.
Any instruction would be really appreciated but please remember, I can't use any sd card (tried several that work on my other dhd).

If you have the system & data .img's from a backup you can try,
Code:
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash data data.img
Thank you for your suggestion. I flashed system and all is ok but when I flash the data image i get
failed remote: partition does not exist.
Any suggestions?

Hey guys,
I'm in desperate need of some help here.
I tried to install the latest build of Coredroid today, installed all the way to start up screen, then saw safe mode sign.
Rebooted phone.
Straight to bootloader (Android skateboarder page).
In bootloader, volume keys do NOT work, thus, I cannot navigate.
I tried several things, my phone will NOT allow me to boot into Clockwork Recovery, no matter what I do.
I have tried renaming several different roms to PD98IMG and then rebooting, bootloader loads the file then takes me here:
Parsing...[SD ZIP]
[1] BOOTLOADER
[2] BOOT
[3] RECOVERY
[4] SYSTEM
[5] SPLASH1
[6] SPLASH2
[7] USERDATA
[8] TP
[9] TP
[10] TP
[11] TP
[12] RADIO_V2
[13] RADIO_CUST
I can't select any of these since my volume keys are unresponsive.
Just so you know, the details at the top of my bootloader screen are as follows:
ACE PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.2007 (PD981000)
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.03.02.26
Can you guys please offer some suggestions?
I'm in such desperate need of help!
Kind regards,
- Ric
My volume keys seem to work in boot loader. Strange that it isn't working for you.
What you can do is open up cmd and use adb shell reboot recovery It should reboot into recovery for you.
There's a fair few threads where people report similar things, although there doesn't seem to be a conclusive solution.
I just tried an adb shell reboot recovery in boot loader and it couldn't find the device. Will try a few other things and get back to you.
The command you want is 'fastboot reboot recovery'

Yes...
You need to get adb and fastboot working. There are plenty of tutorials on here. They both come with the sdk.
Once you have fastboot working its just a case of using that command.
I would use an ruu as a last resort. I don't know about your phone.. but with mine, I have to switch s-on first. So makes it complicated.
Hope u get it sorted. Simply by having bootloader on your phone it means you are recoverable.

Ok, well thanks for the support.
I'll see what I can do.
Hey, So I think I've figured out how to fix your problem. Is your phone unbranded? And the RUU file you have. What steps did you try to get that to work? From what I've read around the forums you can either go into the bootloader. Plug in your USB, and it should come up something like "FASTBOOT USB" on the screen to confirm it. Run the exe and it should take you through the steps. You said you got an error so im assuming thats the steps you tried already.
Failing that, have you got a card reader? If so, you can drop an RUU's pb99img file onto the root of the sd card as Hboot looks for this file when it loads. This will then performs the same action without the need for USB connectivity.
So it's just "pb99img.zip" so delete everything between pb99img and .zip from the filename.

Hello mate, got everything downloaded.
fastboot reboot recovery
Doesn't do a great deal.
After I type it and press enter, the command prompt displays a list of commands and options.
Something along the lines of:
usage: fastboot [ <option> ] <command>
update <filename>
flashall
flash <partition> [ <filename> ]
erase <partition>
and so on...
There doesn't appear to be any interaction with the device itself...

The RUU file you have, It should be about 150mb or something right? and make sure it is the correct RUU file. It should be zipped up and just rename it so it is "pb99img.zip" and make sure not to put it in any sort of folders onto your sd card.
I'm assuming you have the RUU already as you said you tried it already. If not try this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824357

the rom.zip found in an RUU is usually 250-290mb in size depending on carrier addons. This is what is renamed to PD98IMG.zip
AGAIN, PD98IMG
And why hasnt anyone asked him if HTC Sync has been installed?
If you plug in your USB cable while your DHD is powered off, does it go into offmode charging? (does the charging led turn on after a few seconds?)
If so, you should be able to "adb shell" into your phone
Hi!
I USB-Bricked my Desire PVT4. Now it is with HBoot 1.02 and official unrooted Gingerbread 2.3.3.
I tried common methods, but I cant get access to write misc partition.
I got my SD card working with fastboot oem enableqxdm 0. I made a valid mtd0 Image etc... but after copy the flash_image, rageagainstthecage and mtd0 the terminal emulator wont run after stopping the task.
Cant downgrade HBoot without root. Alpharev (revolutionary4-4) needs USB running in ROM.
I did following steps to unbrick (with help of "Leinad"):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955845
Cant pass step 5! Relaunching the Terminal Emulator fails! Doesnt open anymore. I read, that writing Misc partition in HBoot 1.02 is not possible using this method.
Need working method for HBoot 1.02 with official Gingerbread 2.3.3 in order to USB-unbrick my Desire!
Any ideas?
Please !!!! I need help!!!!!
Thanx guys

Which ROM should be included in pmg99.zip?
An ruu is an htc utility that restore everything to stock
as u are usb bricked and can't run the ruu from the pc, u can use a PB99IMG.zip
is it basically what an ruu contain inside the exe
so the steps are:
1) run the gingerbread ruu 2.3.3 without plug the phone..start the exe go next till it ask to plug the phone or something
2) then from windows/run write %temp% and search a rom.zip file
3) rename it as PB99IMG.zip (ensure is not .zip.zip)
4) with an microsd card reader put it in the root of ur sdcard (not in any folder)
5) switch off the phone (pull the battery and plug in again just to be sure)
6) boot the phone in bootloader mode by pressing and holding vold down + press and hold power button..hold both untill u go in a menu with a white screen
7) after some seconds it should ask u automatically to flash the update..the choice yest with volume keys, then confirm yes with the power button
the update will restore everything, so u will lose everything in the phone (not in the sdcard)..ensure to have enough battery..thats it
EDIT: just edit this, check it

maybe my sim card is too old please help...and know that I posted this in the correct thread just wasnt getting any views because its such an old thread. Thanks!!!
I'm not 100% sure but I think you're getting that error because you don't have an ENG bootloader (it says HBOOT and not ENG-HBOOT), which means you shouldn't be allowed to flash anything with fastboot commands.
I am also trying to upgrade my radio (kind of, actually it's the rcdata.img) and fastboot just isn't detecting my PC10IMG.zip
You need to have engineering bootloader in order to use fastboot flash. Is weird that it isn't picking it up from the root of the SD card. Are you sure in the bootloader you selected the first option with the power button it should immediately begin to load and detect

I went on #g2root and a nice guy named skorgon helped me out with flashing PC10IMG.zip even if your bootloader does not detect it.
Just open a command prompt and change directory to where you have PC10IMG.zip, then
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
your phone will reboot into RUU mode and show an HTC logo on a black background
Code:
fastboot flash zip PC10IMG.zip
it will show a progress bar on both the phone and the command prompt will give a text progress. if you see "error: cannot load 'PC10IMG.zip'", make sure your command prompt is in the same directory as the actual PC10IMG.zip file (using Win7, hold shift, right click, then choose "Open command window here")!
when it's done, just do
Code:
fastboot reboot
done!

neither of my desire z's say ENG-HBOOT...
so what have i done wrong?
i followed this guide when rooting http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting
if you followed that guide you should have an engineering hboot, without know exactly what you did I can't say why you don't have it. are you rooted and have s-off? do you have a custom recovery?
if so not a huge deal but I tend to use fastboot a lot and would still recommened getting the eng hboot

you have an engineering bootloader. spl/hboot/bootloader are referring to the same thing by the way
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
whoop, above two posts are right .. i somehow missed the ENG S-OFF bit
if the error message was "error: cannot load 'radio.img'" then perhaps real problem was that the command line directory wasn't the place with the radio.img
