[Q] No way out of bootloader, keys not responsive, please HELP! - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I'm in desperate need of some help here.
I tried to install the latest build of Coredroid today, installed all the way to start up screen, then saw safe mode sign.
Rebooted phone.
Straight to bootloader (Android skateboarder page).
In bootloader, volume keys do NOT work, thus, I cannot navigate.
I tried several things, my phone will NOT allow me to boot into Clockwork Recovery, no matter what I do.
I have tried renaming several different roms to PD98IMG and then rebooting, bootloader loads the file then takes me here:
Parsing...[SD ZIP]
[1] BOOTLOADER
[2] BOOT
[3] RECOVERY
[4] SYSTEM
[5] SPLASH1
[6] SPLASH2
[7] USERDATA
[8] TP
[9] TP
[10] TP
[11] TP
[12] RADIO_V2
[13] RADIO_CUST
I can't select any of these since my volume keys are unresponsive.
Just so you know, the details at the top of my bootloader screen are as follows:
ACE PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.2007 (PD981000)
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.03.02.26
Can you guys please offer some suggestions?
I'm in such desperate need of help!
Kind regards,
- Ric

My volume keys seem to work in boot loader. Strange that it isn't working for you.
What you can do is open up cmd and use adb shell reboot recovery It should reboot into recovery for you.

There's a fair few threads where people report similar things, although there doesn't seem to be a conclusive solution.

I just tried an adb shell reboot recovery in boot loader and it couldn't find the device. Will try a few other things and get back to you.

The command you want is 'fastboot reboot recovery'

Mate I seriously appreciate your help!
Someone suggested downloading a RUU but that didn't work for me either?
I kept getting error 170 (usb connection)

So I typed that and received the message:
'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file
Could you please elaborate on that?

Yes...
You need to get adb and fastboot working. There are plenty of tutorials on here. They both come with the sdk.
Once you have fastboot working its just a case of using that command.
I would use an ruu as a last resort. I don't know about your phone.. but with mine, I have to switch s-on first. So makes it complicated.
Hope u get it sorted. Simply by having bootloader on your phone it means you are recoverable.

Ok, well thanks for the support.
I'll see what I can do.

Hey, So I think I've figured out how to fix your problem. Is your phone unbranded? And the RUU file you have. What steps did you try to get that to work? From what I've read around the forums you can either go into the bootloader. Plug in your USB, and it should come up something like "FASTBOOT USB" on the screen to confirm it. Run the exe and it should take you through the steps. You said you got an error so im assuming thats the steps you tried already.
Failing that, have you got a card reader? If so, you can drop an RUU's pb99img file onto the root of the sd card as Hboot looks for this file when it loads. This will then performs the same action without the need for USB connectivity.
So it's just "pb99img.zip" so delete everything between pb99img and .zip from the filename.

Hello mate, got everything downloaded.
fastboot reboot recovery
Doesn't do a great deal.
After I type it and press enter, the command prompt displays a list of commands and options.
Something along the lines of:
usage: fastboot [ <option> ] <command>
update <filename>
flashall
flash <partition> [ <filename> ]
erase <partition>
and so on...
There doesn't appear to be any interaction with the device itself...

Yes, tried the first part, the RUU didn't detect my phone.
With the second part, how do I find the pb99img file?
Can I just download one?
Could you please point me in the right direction?

I'm still no further forward.
Could you please point me in the direction of one of the tutorials you're talking about?
I have searched extensively but I haven't found anything that seems relevant.
Desperately need my phone!

The RUU file you have, It should be about 150mb or something right? and make sure it is the correct RUU file. It should be zipped up and just rename it so it is "pb99img.zip" and make sure not to put it in any sort of folders onto your sd card.
I'm assuming you have the RUU already as you said you tried it already. If not try this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824357

the rom.zip found in an RUU is usually 250-290mb in size depending on carrier addons. This is what is renamed to PD98IMG.zip
AGAIN, PD98IMG
And why hasnt anyone asked him if HTC Sync has been installed?

If you plug in your USB cable while your DHD is powered off, does it go into offmode charging? (does the charging led turn on after a few seconds?)
If so, you should be able to "adb shell" into your phone

OMG Please Help me!

Ok I think I've actually broken my One X.
I was trying to put a default ROM back onto the system, I had my phone plugged into my PC, and "ran Android_Revolution_HD_Super_Wipe_One_X"
STUPIDLY I deleted a couple of files off the SD card in Windows Explorer, and now I cant get into recovery mode for ClockwordMod Recovery (as I'm assuming like an idiot I deleted it somehow)
Literally if I boot the phone it won't go past the HTC welcome screen.
I apologise profusely if this is already covered elsewhere - but I am an absolute noob and do not understand much of the jargon. I shouldn't have messed in the first place, I could cry
1. Fastboot and erase the cache, that will then allow you back into the recovery.
2. Fastboot the boot.img to your phone, as S-OFF won't allow the clockwork to flash it.
3. Don't panic. You can always recover the phone through Fastboot.
I should know, i was once in your position.
thanks for the reply,
I read about erasing the cache, but I have no idea how.
the guide just says type it into your pc
sorry again for being thick!
No problem.
Do you have fastboot open on your pc? if so.
Type : fastboot erase cache
Then download the Boot.img from ARHD, and follow the instructions.
Mike has included a .bat file that will automatically erase the cache and flash the boot image. I suggest going on to his forum and running the file.
I know I have downloaded it (I'm so lost) but the file in my downloads isn't something that opens a program?
Thanks a bunch!
It should have a .bat named install-boot, it shouldn't run a program, but open in CMD with options displayed on what to do next. Follow the instructions and you'll be fine.
ok I don't have a file called install-boot, just adb, fastboot and a few .dll files. both exe files flash cmd but it doesnt remain open.
any chance you can point me in the direction of this software as it would appear i have the wrong thing!

It seems like we need to get back to basics a bit. Are you familiar with MS-DOS? Those programs are not meant to be run from windows by clicking on them. They are run with command lines typed in a DOS type window that is opened when you type "cmd" into your search box in windows.

sorry, confusing fastboot and flashboot I think,
I'm being told that I'm missing adbwinapi.dll - looking into it
I'm no genius but I'm not usually this bad, just so worried - got the phone 12 hours ago, naturally feeling sick!
ok, followed the steps with flashboot (ran the cache delete and install-boot)
still not let into recovery. it goes past the htc sense screen, all black with a mobile with green arrows in a circle (like a sync) which eventually changed to a triangle with '!' in it.
what am i missing?
You can't delete recovery through windows explorer for the record.

That's stock recovery it sounds like. Just relock your bootloader ( fastboot oem lock) then run an ruu. Then once booted you can start all over.

sorry noob alert again: how do i do this?
Sounds like it has the stock recovery on it. Download the Cwm recovery and you should have a file called recovery.img. Place this file in the adb platform-tools folder. Go to that location in cmd prompt then type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img or you can find on xda via search one x all in one kit which if you download and open then put your phone in fastboot mode via bootloader will allow you to flash Cwm recovery and should do it for you

int the adb platform-tools folder? again im very very sorry, but where is this?
When you downloaded adb did you download the exe or zip version. If exe download zip version then extract it place the contents on your c drive then when using cmd use the cd commands to get to the correct folder.

ok, I have managed to boot a recovery (i think) and can now get into CWM, only problem now, is that my PC no longer recognises my phone in order for me to put any ROM files onto the SD card so that it can load them?
Yes Cwm does not support sd mount atm. I think you will need to refer to the post by someone saying relock bootloader and flash ruu. You will need to find and download the ruu that matches your device. ie network your on and country ur in. As I'm guessing you have deleted the rom image of the sd or nand backup?

[Q] Flashing New Radio

my vision:

MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.10.04.12_M

please a little help...I am trying to upgrade the radio on my phone so that I can use wifi calling.
I tried the PC10IMG zip on the root of sdcard and that will not work...now I am trying to manually push from adb.
I followed instructions for the radio.img perfectly.
I put in fastboot devices in terminal and the device is recognized but when i try to flash the radio it says," error: cannot load 'radio.img'"
current radio: Vision_Radio_12.57.60.25_26.10.04.12
wanted radio: Vision_Radio_12.62.60.27_26.13.04.19
maybe my sim card is too old please help...and know that I posted this in the correct thread just wasnt getting any views because its such an old thread. Thanks!!!
I'm not 100% sure but I think you're getting that error because you don't have an ENG bootloader (it says HBOOT and not ENG-HBOOT), which means you shouldn't be allowed to flash anything with fastboot commands.
I am also trying to upgrade my radio (kind of, actually it's the rcdata.img) and fastboot just isn't detecting my PC10IMG.zip
You need to have engineering bootloader in order to use fastboot flash. Is weird that it isn't picking it up from the root of the SD card. Are you sure in the bootloader you selected the first option with the power button it should immediately begin to load and detect

Ill take some pictures in the morning and look up the guide that I used to flash my engineering bootloader

I went on #g2root and a nice guy named skorgon helped me out with flashing PC10IMG.zip even if your bootloader does not detect it.
Just open a command prompt and change directory to where you have PC10IMG.zip, then
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
your phone will reboot into RUU mode and show an HTC logo on a black background
Code:
fastboot flash zip PC10IMG.zip
it will show a progress bar on both the phone and the command prompt will give a text progress. if you see "error: cannot load 'PC10IMG.zip'", make sure your command prompt is in the same directory as the actual PC10IMG.zip file (using Win7, hold shift, right click, then choose "Open command window here")!
when it's done, just do
Code:
fastboot reboot
done!

Got the radio, got the eng hboot and I have my wifi calling working!!!
neither of my desire z's say ENG-HBOOT...
so what have i done wrong?
i followed this guide when rooting http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting
if you followed that guide you should have an engineering hboot, without know exactly what you did I can't say why you don't have it. are you rooted and have s-off? do you have a custom recovery?
if so not a huge deal but I tend to use fastboot a lot and would still recommened getting the eng hboot
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
I have ENG S-OFF as it is in the post at the top of the thread.... I thought that was the engineering hboot?
The posts below are talking about eng-hboot on the hboot screen?
you have an engineering bootloader. spl/hboot/bootloader are referring to the same thing by the way
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
whoop, above two posts are right .. i somehow missed the ENG S-OFF bit
if the error message was "error: cannot load 'radio.img'" then perhaps real problem was that the command line directory wasn't the place with the radio.img

Hi
Take the sdcard out of the phone and check and see if you have access to the volume buttons again. If so does your hoot have a factory reset option? Should be forth one down if it does.
Your hboot is not htcdev unlockable, but you can attain s-off if we can get it to boot. If the factory reset is not an option try booting into recovery, mash all the buttons until the recovery text options come up and factory reset from there, then report back here

That is whole world's of not good. That means that the area in the bootloader holding the information about the phone, and more likely how to boot is corrupted. The only way to try get out of this at this point is going to need another android phone. You will need to make what's called a gold card, which will format your sdcard making it into a special sdcard which commands htc phones to ignore CID. Once you have this we can attempt to flash a ruu update with a bootloader update and hope that it fixes the issue. But if it fails your only other option aside from getting htc to fix it (unlikely for free) will be to pay to use an xtc clip, force the device to become s-off and them flash several bootloaders in the hope that one works. Let me know what you want to do next pal.

You need to create one using an micro sdcard of 2-4 gb. (The one in the phone already should do ) you will need to place the phone into another android phone, or tablet, and download the app goldcard helper. Use it to determine the reverse CID of the sd card. Then go to this website link here and tell it the reverse CID. It will then let you Download a goldcard.img. once you have that you will need to go to this thread (link) and download this package. This will have a program called goldcard helper. Using this program you will combine the goldcard .img with the sdcard and then you will be good to go to run a ruu.

well, so the first step is to put an external sd card in another android phone, and download this app, and get the code needed to put in that link u gave me?
the job in that thread requires:
5. A htcdev unlocked bootloader follow my previous guide here.
6. cwm recovery installed.
7. superuser installed.
and all of these don't exist in my case
the thread works with adb, and i don't have
and does a 8gb card work? 'not 2 or 4)
edit:
can i pass all the steps to GoldCardTool.exe?
and what comes after?

Yes skip all of it until it talks about gold cards. All you need to do is make the gold card and then run the ruu that's in the downgrade package. It's the same hboot that you are on but it should flash without any issue. If you get error 131 then the goldcard has failed. You can certainly try with a 8gb but personally I've found that the bootloader struggles with anything over 4gb.
So to recap.
Use the app to generate the reverse cid of the sdcard.
Then insert the reverse cid number into the website I linked and download the goldcard.IMG
Then follow the goldcard instructions in the guide where it refers to goldcard tool.exe
It is recommended to use an external micro USB card reader and not a phone when writing the goldcard.
Once done place goldcard into phone,
Then connect phone to PC and then double click the ruu.exe
If it runs without error then wait for reboot of the phone, hopefully all will be well.
If the phone is not picked up then issue the fastboot command fastboot OEM rebootRUU And then try again.
Any error codes from any program just post back here, sorry for my late reply
Edit here is a good tut with a more in depth explanation of goldcard tool. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145035

well,
i got the reversed CID, then i got the goldcard.img from that site
now after i load it to that .exe tool, i get:
An error occured Object reference not set to an instance of an object. tool used: 0.0.5.
i found another version of that toll: 0.0.7, i got that problem:
object reference not set to an instance of an object
i used both files as admin,
and also tried compatibility mode (i'm using win8)

Hmm. ive been re-reading my info on goldcard (its been a while) and it turns out goldcardtool.exe has been know To have issues with cardreaders, so keep the card in the working android phone and mount it to the pc as usb mass storage and try again.
also run it compatability mode windows xp sp3 if possible and if it still fails post your reverse cid to this thread, ask nicely and @matter1 may be able to help you with a new goldcard.img, just incase the one from the website is faulty.
oh and use version 0/0/7 pal
sorry the problem that i didn't enable usb mass storage, it worked now and said that the sd card now is a gold one
now the next step is putting it in the htc-not working phone, and run the ruu.
edit: at last the phone booted up
i used http://revolutionary.io/ to install the recovery and root the phone

[Q] HTC rebooting by itself. What should i do?

I have a HTC desire HD hboot-2.00.0029, radio 26.14.04.28_M .I installed on it RUU_Ace_Sense30_S_Orange_UK_3.13.61.5_Radio_12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M_release_235697_signed .I turn it off and leave it off like 3 weeks. so you mean that your phone still in stock right..?
while you installing that RUU before..is that already finish..?
did you already tried flashing that RUU again...?, maybe you can try it to flashing it that RUU again but now is tried flashing it from your bootloader..
to do that you must go to bootloader and select FASTBOOT..then connecting it your phone to pc until indicator is FASTBOOT-USB..then try open cmd from your adb / sdk folder..then typing "fastboot oem rebootRUU"..then after that..you can try running again RUU.exe from your computer..and wait until finish..then just tell me if that success booting or not..
hope this help..

firstly remove your phone serial number and imei from the attachment picture...avoid someone can cloning your phone...
you can try download this RUU from here..
after that without connecting your phone to pc..firstly you must find the rom.zip file from that RUU.exe..to do that..
just running that RUU.exe until two steps next..then hold there..do not continued and do not closed that..just let it open..then open your explorer..
C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\Temp\[here you will find a lot folder like this "{5CAD3393-EEC0-44CE-9F93-BCAA365B77FB}"] ..search the latest folder by date..and inside that folder you will find subfolder like that again..open it..here you will see the rom.zip file..just copied the rom.zip file to another location...then after that you can cancel and close it RUU.exe
rename it the rom.zip file to "PD98IMG.zip" then copied to the root directory of your sd card (do not place it in any folder)..you can using card reader to copied that file..
after that...just put it in back your sd card to your phone..then boot up your phone to bootloader..then let the bootloader check it the PD98IMG.zip file..and wait until they ask to updating it..just confirm it with volume up..then wait until finish and ask you to confirm reboot with pressing power button..after that if your phone is already success a booting normal again..you must remove it the PD98IMG.zip file from your sd card..

that's so weird things...
what if you try too installing that RUU.exe like normal way...i mean just connecting your phone with pc (select FASTBOOT mode from your bootloder) then running that RUU.exe until finish..
if that still fail too...then another way is you can try it to unlocking your bootloader via htcdev.com first..then after that you can continued installing custom recovery like 4ext, twrp or cwm..and then installing custom rom..
to unlock your bootloader via htcdev.com...firstly you must update your hboot version to 2.00.0029...that hboot update file is already in there site..just follow instruction from site it self..

[Q] Will I save my htc Desire?

Dear all,
I have been looking around the forums and downloaded a few things and looked at various solutions, but I am stuck at the first hurdle.
I have been given an htc Desire Bravo that just will not boot. I do not know how it failed originally but I can only get it into the boot screens, either the fastboot/hboot logon ot the 5 buzzes and the htc logo lock. Also it takes about 30 minutes with the battery out after every failed boot attempt to restart the boot screen.
I have run adb but it cannot tell me a cid number, I have a micro sd card in it but it does not have the pb99diag.zip on it. When I put such a file on the sd card it does not find it. Communication via adb and the phone has varied success. I suspect it is drivers and what I read is an old adb bug where server is out of date.
I have never done this before this weekend so please be gentle with me!
If I can get it to work, even to use it like a wifi tablet without phone I would be happy. I am in the UK and if we have real success I would get it on tesco PAYG
I get the "cannot find pb99diag.zip etc" dialogue when going into hboot.

If u phone does not boot then u can NOT s-off, ur phone needs to be booted.. also if ur s-on and not rooted then all u can do is flash a ruu.
Did u try factory reset from bootloader menu? Try that first, u never know but chances r ul prob need to ruu a ruu.

Hi jmcclue,
Thanks for the comments. I can boot to the HBoot and Fastboot screens, thats how I could find the S-ON and version data. If I get it to reboot, I get either a white screen with just "htc" on it, or 5 buzzes and a screen with no life at all. I am hopeful to get it to S-OFF as I have had some communication through the usb to pc connection. I am not sure if I can do an RUU update as I don't seem to have a CID. I do not have a factory reset option on the HBOOT screen. I have tried clear storage but that has no effect. Perhaps I need the S-OFF first.
Cheers again,
A
Use the 2.3gb update ruu its wwe (world wide english) so dont worry bout cid. U can find it in bortaks troubleshooting guide in resources section and its naned 2.3.3 ruu. U will find it easy enough in google aswell. Search for "htc desire 2.3gb update" its a exe file so just boot ur phone into fastboot, plug in ur phone and run the ruu, hopefully it willvwork. Im a bit worried tho about the 5 vibrations u get, maybe a sign of hardware failure. But try that ruu anyway. And again u can not get s-off unless ur phone is fully working/booted.

Well that was a bit wierd
If anyone can see where I went wrong, feel free to say.
I could not seem to get the link between the phone and the pc so I removed the htc sync and restarted the pc. I could then connect to the phone in some way as abd gave a command error when I sent a fastboot oem readcid which it normally does. So leaving it in fastboot with usb I ran the wwe~.exe file and it all seemed to be doing installing. There were tens of installations going to the phone I guess each reaching 100%. Suddenly I had a web page popup in my browser s.rev2pub.com/ul_cb/player.html?a=19471543&context=c23573548&size=800x600&rt=popunder&ci=10&cb=[CACHEBUSTER] recommending I download latest drivers. The wwe ruu vanished and I have no continuing processes in Task manager that I can see.
So, should I have installed in hboot? Thankfully I can still get the phone to power on. What should happen after the exe file installs?
I am able to get some response from the phone as adb devices returns the phone device number. So I hope I can try again.
Any thoughts?
Many thanks

Hey Adrian, I had the same problem as you did, hopefully I can be of help.
First, like everyone else is saying you will need S-OFF.
To do this head to this site on your PC revolutionary.io hit download for windows or Linux or whatever your pc is running, then you will need to fill out information about your device (see attached screenshot). Device, HBoot number, and serial number, (the serial number can be found behind the battery of your device). Once you have done that, click "Generate Key". it will give you a key, remember it or write it down.
Then, open the file that was downloaded, and extract the contents to your documents and Run the revolutionary( should look like the screenshot attached). Plug your device in (assuming you have the drivers) and it should ask you to enter the beta key we had before. Enter that and hit enter. it will then S-off your Desire and soon ask if you would like to install a custom recovery. hit Y and then enter, once that is finished, unplug your device and in HBoot go to "Recovery". Now you can flash a ROM of your choice.
Hopefully I made sense!
Best of luck

Can I confirm that I can do this from the HBOOT screen or the fastboot screen? Also where jmmclue said if I can't boot then I can't S-Off, does that mean boot to the HBOOT screen or into Android? Then if I want to load say WWE, do I put that on a microSD to get it to recover?

Thanks lilsafbig, that was a little too ambiguous to understand, but I have a few developments.
I am able to communicate to some degree with adb between phone and pc. Before I was unable to get anything back but now with the right syntax I have got back the CID as HTC_001 and the device number. But when I run revolutionary from the fastboot USB screen the revolutionary continues to wait for the device to show. Is it likely that USB degugging was off prior to the failure, is there a way to get it on. I suggest this as when I connect it to my pc it recognizes the device and shows in the device manager as an htc unspecified device (this is progress). As I cannot boot android it does not show as an additional drive in file manger. when I try some of the fastboot oem commands I get bad command errors, whilst fastboot getvars is ok. Could this be why I cannot get revolutionary to S-OFF!
Thanks
additional info, when usb is in an in fastboot usb, the device manager sees it as android 1.0

If you can still get to bootloader / fastboot screen, then you are rarely ever bricked.
1. Ignore anything and everything to do with revolutionary and fastboot for now. I'm afraid the first few posts while trying to be helpful have been misleading. Get your phone booting up into Android OS first, i.e. into a stock ROM using an RUU
2. Use the 2.3.3. GB RUU, nothing else, it doesn't need a goldcard or care about CID etc.
3. Download it from the bottom here, then use Bortak's troubleshooting guide stickied to the top of Q&A, Point [7] to run it as a PB99IMG.zip from the root of your sdcard. That way you don't need to run it through USB or care about what drivers are installed.
Thank you Eddie, I will try that. I did try flash a PB99IMG.zip before with no success but I will try again.
I found it here Official Stock Sense Gingerbread_v1.2 GB-2.3.3_A2SD – http://androidba.se/J7 for desire (neophyte)
I hope it can work out ok. I guess I format the sd card to fat32 not ext4
Will let you know how it goes.
Thanks,
A

That's a custom rom.
Here's the link for the 2.3.3 ruu.

That did not work because the file is not an RUU...it is a stock rooted custom ROM with A2SD (the clue is in the name). It is designed to flashed in recovery like any other ROM. Renaming it to PB99IMG.zip won't do anything.
Use the actual shipped roms RUU link provided.
Reformat your sdcard to a single FAT32 partition if necessary, then follow Method [7] of the guide, place only the PB99IMG.zip on the root of the sdcard (not in any folder)
