What amazes me is you post a question like this..why the hell wouldn't you call the company you got it from and ask? This isn't the warranty department for your cell phone ya know. Ya I'm a **** but **** like this...

If you're not rooted, I'm sure they'll do something for you. If you are rooted, do a search on how to return your phone back to stock settings (S-off as well) before you bring it back in for warranty. You definitely shouldn't be taking your phone apart if you don't know what you're doing.
If I read it right, the 3.5mm prong is stuck in the headphone jack. Never heard that, but I'm assuming the tapered edge was brought out as well, so you could probably wedge some tweezers or a very fine metal between it and pull it out if you really didn't want to go through the hassle of the warranty you're entitled to (or voided if you rooted).

Yeah, i admit - my question was quite stupid. It should be more like: should i repair this on my own and lose warranty or send it to orange (i bought it there) and for 4 to 5 weeks (propably) not being able to use my brand new, awesome, and quite pleasing phone. Thanks for all answers, rational or not and, again, sorry for stupid questions - i'm not used to having something called "warranty" - never had brand new phine before - allways repairing by myself
Ps having a **** doesnt makes you one

Okay ill be straight foward... Warranty is only used for phone defects. Am from T-Mobile and if I told them what happened am sure they will say that it was my fault and will not fix it and if I send it in I would have to pay restocking fee... Well like one of the people said, try to take it out first and if it won't then, if you have experience with opening phones you can to fix it yourself but I don't recommend it though. Wish you luck my friend

I tend to agree here. It seems you used either a defective or damaged third party accessory with your phone, and that's not really HTC's problem. If they fixed it, it would just be purely charity. They may fix it for good customer relations, but I wouldn't count on it. Based on user experiences here, the warranty department seems to lean pretty heavily toward not fixing things they aren't responsible for. You can always call and ask. If they say they will fix it, I would document the conversation (date, time, name of person you talked to) in case they tell you different later.
I found some clever tips on removing the offending object from a Macbook headhone jack. But try at your own peril, of course. Some of the techniques sound like they could do more harm than good, if you aren't extremely careful. One method was similar to the first thing that popped into my head, using a drill with a screw extractor. But I would be scared about damaging the jack or getting metal shavings everywhere. Screw extraction tends to be far from delicate or clean, at least in my hands.

Thanks for that link....quite ....hmmm....interesting way of getting this plug out...i have to try this, but first a call to the warranty center....
Thanks for all answers....

G2 screen discolored

So I droped my phone and now I have a purple spot in my screen.
I was wondering do you think I can get a replacement G2 even if I have S-off. I was thinking about just flashing the stock rooted backup I have and sending it in. Has anyone gotten a replacement with S-off?

you would need to go back to stock to send it back to tmobile or you will be voiding your warrenty

Obvious physical damage is unlikely to be repaired under warranty unless you have paid extra for this kind of protection.
Search around and you can find an LCD to install yourself. This is one EXAMPLE (I don't know the provider and there are other places to buy them from, possibly for less money...)
http://www.gultek.eu/htc-spare-parts/lcd/desire-z.html
Thanks for the info but I think the phone gods really like me or something cause the purple spot just disappered...how I have no idea and I don't care but it is awsome...G2 #1 lives on to see another day with me

Yeah, LCD's can be funny like that. Like touching a laptop screen gets you some funny colors. They are somewhat flexible, on a phone, the flexible lcd is somewhat protected by the inflexible digitizer.
Year at first I was very disappointed cause I had the spot there for about 30 mins the posted this thread, went to sleep and it was gone which made me happy...would have sucked ifap I did send it back cause I just put one of those stealth guards on my phone the full body cover one.

I think the best thing to do in this case is to brick the phone to the point it doesnt even turn on. Discreetely of course. I had major water damage on my TP2 with a custom rom before. But the fact that the phone didnt even start up and that I bleached the moisture indicators helped me get a warranty replacement.

You're late to the thread (and obviously didn't read it through). His problem was just temporary. Also, your solution is in extremely poor taste (both ethically and legally).
I sent my g1 in, with a crack all the way across the screen, discoloration everywhere, and lots of other scratches. (fell out of my pocket from a motorcycle) and they offered me the "upgrade" to the click at the time so i took it. I wasnt charged anything, and what they dont tell you is that if you are charged, its only gonna be 100 bucks, which is the same as what you'd pay with insurance.
Well with my g1 any problem I had with it I just sent it in for a replac ement and all it ever costed was $40 but I think that's cause the plan I have. But not sure about my g2 now cause I haven't had to send it in for a replacement yet "knock on wood" but I do wonder how much it will cost me to get a replacement.

It only cost you your soul for 3 years, which should be worth a whole hell of a lot more than a measly $100.

I knew that the OP's original problem did not apply anymore. The purpose of my reply was rather to share my experience with the others reading the post, ethics aside. As far as legality goes, you got me there now that I think about it, so I am forced to advise against doing this. Although in reality I hardly think it's any worse than not claiming the money earned from selling a phone, laptop etc., on your taxes.

[Q] Replacing the Camera?

I dropped my G2 and now the camera doesn't work Now the camera button doesn't do anything and I get FC's from any app using the camera. I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem since I tried in two different ROMs.
Anyone know a place where I can get the camera module?

And if your rooted, 'try' follow the instructions to unroot....and then send it back .....

Yep, I'm rooted (albeit with the old ENG method)

If you got the accidental damage warranty from Tmo when you got the phone, you can send it in for replacement.

No, it is NOT worth the try... because once you've posted all over the internet that you dropped it, it is provably FRAUD (prison time...) to try to pass it off without disclosing to the manufacturer that it was, in fact, dropped.
The thing is, on the bottom right part of the front of my phone, there's some chipping of the plastic :/ I think it's a bit obvious that I dropped it now. I didn't get the handset protection, which I really regret now
But back to my original question: can I easily replace the camera and is there a site that sells camera parts?

Wow law enforcement agencies in your area really must have a lot of time on their hands....im not aware of a single person receiveing time for returning a phone under similar circumstances.....!!!
Ive had countless phones for countless years and legitimately paid for insurnace and never claimed so its what i would call 'karma'....and whether you did or didnt drop it, sh*t does occassionaly randomly stop working....
I think its more down to your own moral standing....but as for posting it on the web, its obviously better that you dont !
NB - just for the record before I get shot down in flames, I'm not openly condoning criminal activity, were not talking about doing this on a commercial scale this is as a result of an accident.....read the small print on your phone and or home insurance and see if you are covered but don't freak out about it

Dude seriously.....flowers and bunnies? Are you on acid ?
Your obviously one of three things.....a cop, an insurance salesman or a religious nutcase.....all off which I have utter contempt for lol
Right I promise to make this my last post on this topic....
<Rant>
With the exception of Ned Flanders above who clearly lives in Pleasantville, la la land the vast majority of people on here live in the real world. You have to accept that sometimes, legitimately or otherwise things happen outside of the realms of what you are covered for....If you were to insure your items for every possible waking scenario your policy cost would far outweigh that of the items insured thus being totally unreasonable.
Now I'm pretty sure that the OP isn't running a multi billion pound insurance fraud empire, he's just an average Joe who's worked hard to pay for a phone which is now damaged. Whilst I'm not saying its ok to be fraudulent, sometimes rules need to be bent to suit a scenario in which you 'are' covered, i,e if your phone insurance doesn't cover for damage but your house insurance does then claim on that, or if your covered for loss and theft (then you could theoretically 'accidently' lose it.....!)
To put this into perspective I currently pay Household, Car, Phone, Life, Teeth and Pet insurance (to name but a few) totalling hundreds if not thousands of pounds per year and have yet to make a claim and insurance companies make millions each year from this. Its also stated that to warrant insurance you'd need to make on average at least 2 claims per year....which the vast majority of people never do. So while I appreciate your point I think you need to get off your high horse, and change your 'mightier than thou' mentality.....go to church, say your 100 hail Marys or whatever it is you feel you need to do to redeem yourself over this obviously criminal conversation lol
Also - I'm also fairly sure that he will learn from this and will take the relevant accidental damage insurance out going forward. And should I see the OP's name in my local tabloids tomorrow for having run said multi billion pound insurance fraud empire I personally will eat my desire for the delight of you !
Oh and one last thing......NO ONE is out to get me, or you or anyone else for that matter (unless your a full blown crook?!)....this isn't a conspiracy theory......oh and err and crackpot extremist Muslims DID blow up the world trade centre....its wasn't the US government, Aliens or any of those pesky bunnies you previously mentioned just in case you were too scared to leave the house ?! lol

Man.....
The whole idea of this site is about the freedom of choice and the ability to run custom ROMs etc etc on your phone but the whole concept whilst not illegal goes against the manufactures warranty and what they would have you do with your handset....hence the reason why there's so many requests to unroot/revert in the event of an issue.... and I know you know this.
If you accidently bricked your handset as a result of a bad flash or whatever .....your first port of call isn't to go out and buy another handset is it? (unless your a lottery winner, stupid or any combination therof) You'd try and undo what youve done and if needs be send it back to the manufactor hoping they will fix it without spotting any changes (or at least thats what id do....and im pretty sure so would thousands of others) but where then do you draw the line ? That is in fact also dodgy .....but its a bit of a grey area and whilst not a hardware issue its just as ropey a topic, yet you somehow pick and choose the bits of the rules you adhere to ? Go figure !!.....If HTC found that you had changed any element internally resulting in a malfunction you'd probably incur a charge same as if they found that you 'had' dropped the device and damaged the hardware but result is still the same.....
I've had devices that have been looked after, never dropped or abused and hardware does sometimes stop working....does that mean I'm not eligible to make a claim ? NO, does it also automatically imply that I've misused or neglected the item ? NO....its down to the discretion of the person reviewing the item and obviously an internal inspection.
So whether you ultimately source an independent part or return it regardless (hoping they fix it for free) but end up having to pay what they ask.....your still going to have to pay someone !! All I'm trying to say as a result of all this is....What have you got to lose? Nothing.....if it gets through great, if it doesn't your no worse off.
Whilst my view on the subject maybe different from yours I still agree that you take the appropriate cover and you are responsible for your item, but don't come on here giving it all the 'rules and regulations talk' when in fact your very being here is breaking the rules in the first instance.....
Thanks though
What the hell are you talking about? Cut out the strawman arguments. I've never bricked a phone out of negligence and when I've cracked a screen I've fixed it out of pocket. This has nothing to do with custom roms.

Oooooooo !!!
lol whoever said you did ? But plenty of people on here have and its primarily deemed ok to return a phone on that basis.....but not on damaged hardware basis?!
And by your own admission.....
If you drop your phone thats damage due to neglect
If you flash a rom and it goes bad thats damage due to missuse
But the principal is the same....damage is damage and the hot topic was about returning a damaged phone.....my missus works in insurance and I happen to understand how a return policy works (the same applies for a manufacturors return).....its not down to you to prove you didnt drop it its down to the review to prove you did..... all i originally mentioned was try return it and see what they say.....if theres physical damage internally you'd be hard pressed to say you didnt drop it, but if something has just come lose you could argue that it worked its way lose thats all....
I quite frankly dont give a sh*t about the moral element (which is what seemed to be the issue)
At the end of the day all that will happen is they will either repair it for free or they wont.....f**K me!
And if you actually read my post, I never said rooting and custom ROMs was illegal but companies like HTC and whoever dont spend millions on development of encryption and preventative measures for sh*ts and giggles mate, they do it to prevent a a mass influx of devices getting returned due to missuse/bad flashes (amongst other things).....they wont openly just accept devices that have been tamperred with as its not good business sense....so whilst not illegal you try return a phone thats had a change of software/HBOOT/Whatever and see you willing they are to accept it.......errr not very.....hence the reason why so many people ask about unrooting etc !
Now pi55 off

Look I agree on the fraud side but were not talking about throwing your phone on the floor whenever you want a new one, or regularly taking the pi55 with bogus claims but sometimes accidents happen and why after paying for insurance shouldnt you be entitled to a replacement irrespective of the reason the damage came about?
And as much as much as I love the products etc I have yet to receive one that works 100% from the offset (and i have to put up with and accept this....and who's stood fighting my corner as a consumer?) .....see my post 'desire behaving badly'. I paid £420 for a phone and havent touched it (in terms of root etc) yet it still has faults and i negate this fact by occasionaly bending the rules and maybe getting a replacement.....its swings and round abouts......
If you have a problem with that, thats fine........I dont.

[Q] How do I short circuit my E4GT? (serious)

Long story short, I flashed a boatloader for the european version of the phone and my phone is bricked.
I want to know how to short circuit my phone without making it look intentional. I am not insured but I do have warrenty, if I short circuit the phone, will they be able to fix it in the sprint store? I am really hoping they don't. I just want a new phone. I was told that I was have to pay a $35 fee to get the phone fixed, what do you guys think? BEst way to short circuit this phone? (Not with water please)
UPDATE:
So my cuz and I went to the sprint store and his friend saw the phone and the first thing he asked if it was rooted, I said yeah. He couldn't fix it, but said he will take care of it when exchanging it and since I didn't have insurance, I had to pay the $35 warranty exchange. Furthermore, I added the insurance with the exhange, I am picking up the exchanged phone tomorrow because it had to be ordered.
Thanks a lot guys for the help.
This is why im glad i have insurance if i brick it its at the bottom of a lake. What warranty. As he said even download mode warns you of the possible warranty voiding. Least expensive option now is probably repair.
Besides the things I'd like to say about this situation, I'll say something else. It won't go into download mode? You could try getting a USB jig and see if that will force it into download mode. I'm holding back the temptation to say something really smartass. This was a very expensive lesson, huh? Sending it in to unbrick it, if all else fails, is your last resort. With a $500 phone, you can't afford NOT to get insurance for it?! Even if you had insurance, you wouldn't get a brand new phone.
I'm not trying to be a ****, so don't take it that way.
im referring to the 1 year warrenty that comes with the phone, it protections against defections in the phone. If I short circuit it, it will be defected... no more useless comments please, don't remind me of what I already know; I know that I should have gotten the insurance, enough said about that.
Would really appreciate it if someone could actually answer my question
newalker, would sprint be able to tell that the phone is rooted if i shorted out to the point that it wont turn on? was thinking about using a 9 volt battery to do so.

If you fry the usb port theyll blame it on you using an aftermarket charger since your stock one is fine. You probably wont be lucky enough to even keep them from checking the rom status. You have a phone capable of being repaired by samsung soon you may have nothing.
The warranty covering defects was voided by a custom rom. The reason they wont honor it after rooting or custom rom is things such as overclocking. Many things can be done via software that would normally be replaced as defective.
If you cant make it so they never find out then all warrantys are null and void period. Truth and fact.
how do I get this 35 dollar exchange done sir? How can I get the 35 dollar exchange w/o them finding out I rooted the phone? :/ been such a stressful week, been bricked for a week. What's the BEST thing I can do right now in my situation?>

#1 --- Avoid Flashing Cooked ROMS on your phone...live with stock!!! I do and havn't had any problems at all..
Seems like there are more people complaining about all theses cooked ROMS and how they either work perfectly...or suck some way or another or have tons of glichs.
#2 --- Always, and I mean Always get $8 insurance on a Smartphone, in the long run this will save your ass...big time...
#3 --- People look at the 2 year contact price of the phone...not the really price of the phone (which is $549 I believe) and thats what gets them in trouble...ahhh my phones only $200 or less, I dont need insurance...yet if you break your phone you have a POS brick weight...that will now cost you over $500 to replace...or you could pay $8 a month and if something goes wrong, The Sprint Repair Center will fix it free...or replace it with a refurb unit....Even if you make a claim due to water damage or something, its still cheaper than the $500+ dollars you will have to fork out...

Your one smart guy John. You have helped me a several times with some responses to my questions and I really appreciate it. If your idea works you’ll make a quite a few people happy on here. Seen a handful of these issues with people flashing the Int versions. If this doesn’t work I would use the 9V battery idea and run it across the board.

I dare you to bring it to my store. Nothing gets passed a well trained tech. Your best bet is to go to an advanced exchange only store, the reps are not trained like the techs. Pay the 35 and call it a day. As for the microwave comment, solder points get a white residue on them after being microwaved, to a trained tech it looks like corrosion.

Sorry, not to be n [email protected]@hole here, because what happened to you really sucks, but if you screwed up your phone by doing something dangerous without doing proper research (ie: try to flash something designed for the European Galaxy S2 onto an Epic touch), why should Sprint eat the cost and give you a replacement phone? I mean you are basically asking for a way to cheat Sprint.
Something to consider. I really do feel for you and hope somehow someone comes up with a fix.
the best easy to do what ur asking and not get caught would be to take a fully charged 18v battery from a drill, 2 wires either stripped on both end or to make it easier put alligator crimps.on each end and hook the battery to the terminals on back of phone where battery usually touches and then hit the power button on your phone. it will leave no trace and even if it does get powered up its well enough outside the read parameters to where nobody can catch it. ive seen this done already to atleast 7 or 8 phones. have fun

So sprint covers rooted phones but doesn't cover physically damaged phones......try telling the truth and not being an idiot and listening to almost anyone else here. 9v battery? Really?

Aren't you able to add insurance on your phone at any time??

Yes you can but it would look suspicious if the phone needed work shortly after the insurance kicked in.

[Q][Asurion]Question before I send back my freshly dropped E4GT

So I dropped my phone today and cracked the screen. Already made the claim, listed a major crack or multiple cracks, blah blah blah.
What I'm wondering is this: Since it's obviously hardware damage and in no way linked to software, should I even worry about flashing back to stock before I send it in? If so would it not be just as easy, and in a sick/twisted way fulfilling, to just render the screen completely unusable after I activate the replacement? I'm thinking as long as the screen is inoperable they won't even worry about firmware/modem/etc, but wonder if that's just me being naive.

Asurion could care less if it's rooted/ROM'd, etc... It's not their job to care. Even if the damage to the phone was caused by rooting, like a hard brick or something, they would still replace it. It's incidental damage, which is what they cover.

You are the man. I figured as much, just wanted the highly regarded opinion of some XDA members . Anyways, thanks for the quick reply.

_MetalHead_ is correct, I recently cracked a E4GT just like you and it was rooted.
Asurion does not care, send it in.

Thanks for the additional input.
So really the only people who would care are the service techs if its a software problem or some issue they can write off on rooting? I know it voids your warranty, but who if anyone would care at all?

This is some good information to know just in case this exact circumstance may happen to others. I thought there was an FCC rule stating that rooting/jailbreaking a phone was allowable?
Dude if you a bit technical, you can swap the lcd and send back the refurbish mother board back to them with the crack screen, unles you are having sw issues or you have them send the device activated already, then just keep the refurbish unit

I remember hearing the buzz
about this when it was fresh, albeit the exact details are eluding me. Anyways, the legality of rooting is no longer in question when you sign that 2-year contract. Yes you are in the legal clear to root, but the contract states clearly that rooting will void your warranty

I don't doubt for a second the possibility of doing so, however I've yet to have an issue with a refurbished phone. Yes I'll have to reroot, relocate my data, etc. but I'm sure all of that will take a fraction of the time it'll take me to swap out screens. Although I do see some of the perks for those that are far more technologically inclined, as you're basically refurbing your own phone. But for $100 I expect to get more than just a new screen. These scratches are just plain ugly all around the bezel and on the battery door.
Thanks for the advice though, just because it isn't right for me doesn't mean someone else won't find it useful in some way, shape or form.

No problem I had so refurbish issues before, so I try to go that route
ICS E4GT
So my next thought is if by some chance I brick the phone before I send it back, will that have any affect in itself? I'm debating on using my 10 day window to see if by flashing from ICS to GB to see if there's any information I can find to share with our devs as to what's bricking everybody. That is, only if there is any actual information that that could provide. If not I'll just let this horse die and just migrate to the next handset quietly.
Obviously if I could I'd just donate the phone to one of you guys as a spare to try tinkering with, but Asurion takes insurance fraud quite personally from what their site says

You can brick it, submerge it in water, drive over it with your Hummer H1, toss it out a 10 story window, microwave it, urinate all over it and then send it back to them and it would make no difference.
Gotcha, as long as they get the phone they could care less about its actual condition.
Now would it even be helpful to flash back and forth grabbing logcats along the way or is it pretty much at a point where only source will help?
I'd like to contribute some how, figured maybe that could be my start.

W_arranty and rooted

Hi!
my phone is rooted and unlocked via HTC Dev. My head phone jack has been acting up in a most annoying way. The jack is very glitchy, if you touch the stiff part of the headphone (the part just above the hole so to say), it pauses the music because it thinks I pulled out my headphones. To get it to work again I need to pull the plug and put it back in again and start the music again.
This is very annoying and I would like to get it fixed. So my question is: To return it for warranty, shall I unroot and relock it or doesn't hthat matter because they will find out that I had it unlocked anyway? Any advice at all would be appreciated!
//BloomTwig
I would unroot the phone and back to stock.
You then have the biggest chance to get it fixed, if they find out its a easy way to say fixing it
God, I had them tell me I had water damage and they sent pics, but I knew it was a lot of crap, so they took it back for a 2nd loook and admitted the pics were not even my phone.
I think the manufacturers will cover you even if you're rooted, but I'm not entirely sure so don't quote me on that! i.e. Carrier won't, but contact HTC directly and they might be able to help!
HTC are clear on rooted phones. DONT give them the info, if you do, do at your own risk

That's backwards for most places (well, certainly most of Europe). The responsibility to uphold statutory rights lies with the retailer, not the manufacturer.
If in 1st year then you can force the retailer to deal with it, but they would just send it to HTC cos they cover it for a further year. So the root problem would still be there.

Thanks for the input. So I will just take a chance I guess... If they realize it's been rooted, what will they do then?
Will the fact that this is a hardware error, some kind of glitch in the connecting, and not a software mess up have any influence? The problem would be there even though it was never rooted...
Even if its not related, it breaks their t&cs. If they find out they will just post it back unfixed or might fix it. Fingers crossed
