Hi all,
I'm a newbie of the Androids world. (and also in HTCs one).
I'm coming from the world of Nokia hacking and modding and here, with all the mods changed, I feel a bit (just not to say totally) lost.
I bought this week a new HTC Desire, I feel very happy and proud of my choice, the AMOLED screen is something superlative.
But, coming to my problem:
I discovered that to join the wifi hotspot in my university i need to set the proxy and other stuff which i can do only with root privilege and other apps, so I decided that is just arrived the time to f**k up the guarantee and install a rom one time for all, at the beginning so i must not reinstall many apps, settings and other stuffs.
I'm searching for a ROM which is the most possible similar to the original Sense FroYo that is now installed on the phone. But at the moment for me I think it's to hard to be able to recognize the differences between two ROMs, so...
Which is better for me to choose in the huge list of post #1 of the "Desire Index - Everything is here" thread?
Obviously it must have the root capabilities, ap2sd and..? (i'm totally ignorant in which are the starter-important mod)
thx for you help and sorry for my poor english..

LeeDroid! But I'm biased, been using it a couple of months and it rocks, full Sense ROM, A2SD+ (need an ext partition on your SD card for this), themeable, overclockable if you want. I've tried other but nothing has persuaded me to switch.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997
this one is all stock but for the root access, but if you root, why just go for the same as you got?
Invest a few bucks in titanium backup or mybackup pro and rom manager and try some of the top roms like AuraxTSense, LeeDroid, both with Sense as you know it, or Miui and OpenDesire which run alternative launchers.
There is never just flash one rom and be happy once you have set yor foot in here
By far the greatest of all is LeeDorid.Lots of good features and a lot of updates !
Modaco Custom ROM
Should be as good as Leedroid or even better in my opinion ;-)

MIUI 10.0.29 is honest to god stunning, its fast, overclockable, excellent batterylife and the whole UI is a nice overhaul. Its clean and everything has been designed for use, the system menu has been re-organized for the better making it easier and clearer to get to all options. They have also done things like add settings to the notification panel, added kintetic scrolling (so things bounce) FM radio re-skinned all major apps. The lockscreen has also been changed to a custom lockscreen which has quick access to phone and messaging, barring that i'd suggest trying DeFrost, he does good builds of CyanogenMod, or Cyanogen Mod 6.1 rc1. Not a huge fan of CM6, its seems as slow as sense roms on my phone. OD and DeFrost dont seem to suffer this issue however.
Mr favourite non-Miui rom is OpenDesire, theyr quick and dont come with bloatware r crap pre-installed, but Adam_g has been absent lately.
For 'sense' builds try leeDroid (imo bloated with tonnes of crap), Modaco Custom Rom (www.desire.modaco.com) or Alex-V sense rom. Theres also AuraxTSense but its hideous. Imo for a good sense rom try a modaco rom with a sense kernel such as vorkKernel, or 'HAVS 2.6.32 for Sense Roms V5' by richardtrip

CyanogenMOD is one of the fastest ROM and the one with the most fixes and updates! Dont say bad things about CyanogenMOD RomĀ“s !! Without him this Community would be nothing!
Sense or AOSP? Minimalist or Feature-Packed? Depends on your personal needs...
You could start with a rooted stock, after a week try Leedroid/RCmixHD/MIUI and next week CM6.
Or you just get DSIXDA's Kitchen, learn some ADB and Shell Stuff and make your own ROM.
Go for cyanogen to get the best android experience...
This post might fit better in the Desire Q and A and not the Development section mate
this is not a post for the development section, in future please reasd the forum rules before posting
I've tried Leedroid (SENSE) and DeFrost (NON-SENSE).
Both are really good but after some experience I've decided to stick with non sense ROMs. They are by far faster but that eventually comes at the price of some higher battery drain.
DeFrost FTW !
You must be thinking, i'll find the best and most popular one and i wont be flashing again in the next few months/weeks. You're wrong. You come here, you'll be flashing all roms as the clocks ticking.
I have tried all except MIUI and Defrost so far. and am sticking on OpenDesire for the longest AOSP rom and Modaco R8 for the sense ROM.
But my personal choice;
CyanogenMod : Be it Nightly, stable or RC, i love it to the core! Best AOSP rom ever. I tried them all and they are super fast! The reason i didnt use it currently because i waited for the stable 6.1. Hehe~~ Love the nightlies before RC1 got released though.
OpenDesire : The dev(AdamG) used to have minor updates almost everyday but now, very2 long time before an update, meaning it is at the most stable version now. and it is true cuz i didnt believe it at first( I used to use the older versions and it still have some bugs) but now it is the best for me. Best after CM(cant deny CM, they are the master here).
LeeDroid : Well i've tried all Sense roms already, and this seems the most stable and fast(though i found out it become slower over time, my fault for installing so many apps maybe). I used to love NeXTSense by Neo, but when it got changed to AuraxtSense, i jumped to Lee.
I'm sorry for posting in the wrong section, but i wasn't sure where to post in the different areas.
Well, you named different roms, but which are the differences (explained to a nearly-noob)?
I'm searching for something with the same interface of the normale roms, but purified from all the (in)utilities. In fact a clean and fast rom, in which THEN i decide what i like to install and personalize...
If I can make a representation, a roms with no apps which are not native (facebook, twitter, opera and all the others), but with only the things that you nedd as a basis for all the rest.
Lol the op will still have a hard time deciding. XD
The best way for you to choose which Rom to use is to download and test each one individually. Hope you get ORD btw

I'd like to test them all, but at the moment i'm under exams and for next 5 weeks don't have enough time to test anything.
so I was searching for a direct suggestion explaining what will change and what will not change..
If you want a rooted rom similar to your current one, why don't you just use unrevoked to root your current rom?

MIUI! or Defrost!
If you want speed, then go for Cyanogenmod 6.1, DeFroST or OpenDesire. If you want a nice UI, too, you have to put a theme on it or use a Rom like RCMixHD, AuraxTSense or smth. like that.
a-ehm...are there ROMs that haven't been named yet? LOL

easy, test it while you go. thats what i did.
Here's my timeline(some are examples);
I'm meeting my girlfriend tomorrow, lets bring LeeDroid! and yeah i did it, i manage to test all features and stability while I'm in the bus travelling from my place to her(took 8 hours in the bus). i screwed up while playing around though, the phone didnt boot so i had to restore nandroid of my modaco R8 back...haha~~
This weekend is examination time(yeah seriously no joke), so last week i flashed OpenDesire. Now i'm still using it. done exploring it in a day though, and keeping it longer than i imagined since i love it.
Presentation week, damn it this week was very busy and i tried Cyanogenmod Nightly 149. Love it. but no themes for it so i flashes CM 6.0.2...but aah too many gallery crash for me so i'm back to OpenDesire.
Well those are my moments, you'll be done exploring in 2 days at max for a rom though. Be sure to test all primary function first before you begin to like them. I did all in a day only. shouldnt be too hard.
R2's rom is great but I think I speak for many users that are frustrated with the lack of updates with OMGB. Maybe it would be possible for someone to get R2's rom and update it with some CM7 fixes and other things. Is this to daunting of a task or why hasn't someone else taken up this Rom???
What's wrong w/ CM7 itself? I don't think there's anything major left not working on the recent (>= 28) builds.
He's done with omgb he's gonna make omfgb next. It works well enough for most people. There isn't really much that can be improved.

i am beyond confused. have you even tried CM7 before posting your request???? Everything there works now and its stock (no theming) with a few enhancements (because thankfully slayher, cyanogen and team are very smart). This is probably beyond insulting to all the devs working extremely hard on developing GB for our incs. If you believe it is easy for devs to whip out roms, please either contribute to the process or contribute donations.
I hate to be traffic police (because most people who do so are pompous numnuts IMHO) but this thread does not belong in dev section by any stretch of the imagination. Its just a request, nothing more.
compare cm7 vs. OMGB
There are so many fixes on there that aren't applied to OMGB.
I don't like cm7 because it feels like a could use a vanilla 2.2 rom add a custom launcher and it would be pretty similar. Just not a fan of customizations.

brad, please test out the functionality and speed of CM7. GB does add significant things. I am a tinkerer so I know why I cant go back to 2.2 anymore. There are enough functionality enhancements. And I dont understand, what customizations??? I have flashed 11 CM7 builds - trust me until you are a crackflasher, you will never delve deep enough to really use the power of GB.
I understand where the OP is coming from. My guess is you would have to wait for OMGB to develop and catch up with CM7 in terms of bug fixing.
I too wanted a "stock" GB rom.. but CM7 brought it close for me after I installed stock gingerbread launcher that someone ripped and posted on the market.
What kind of "bugs" are you referring to?
Hey guys my wife has an htc droid incredible that she wants better performance out of. As of yet she is always complaining about how it sucks and its slow and boring. I'm sure she will want something she can use a theme on, and something extremely stable..the last thing I need is to hear her freaking out that it is messing up on her.
Also I have no idea if there is a way to create a nandroid backup on the dinc like I do with the fascinate with clockwork, hopefully there is because whatever I end up doing I need to be able to go back without a hitch...
Any and all thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated guys! Thanks!

Sense or non-sense?
Its the wife..of course nonsense. Lol really though I'm sure sense but as long as i am able to revert no problem we can try non-sense. If she ends up not liking any of it I need to be able to restore to like it never happened and she can go on with all her stuff there lol

Awesome. What are the general steps to backing up and then flashing the above? (or anything else on the dinc for that matter) the most I have done is unrevoked and that's just as easy as super one click root lol

I recommend the Incredibly Re-Engineered rom. It is sense based and has been very stable and very good with both battery and performance. I am using v2.3.1 and the incredikernel kernel.
Also, I did not see if anyone responded to your question about the backup with clockwork. Clockwork backup does work with the incredible. I have had to use it a few times myself
edit: Oh by the way this is my first post. Hello to everyone here at XDA!
For "non" Sense I'd definitely go with CyanogenMod 7 RC1. It's fast, stable, and GINGERBREAD!!!

Hi.....welcome
As for the OP: After you figure out the nandroid backup stuff (which isn't too hard, esp since you have experience with your device)....
I stuck with Virtuous for a while which was basically an improved stock ROM...probably not what your wife wants if she wants it different and finds stock "boring" (but still a great rom). Unfortunately, not much development there anymore.
Skyraider sense was my next move. Loved it! Still sense, very stable, but lots of modifications and customizations available (ie: themes). A major upset was the fact that ihtfp69 stopped working on it for the time being.
However, I'm currently running CM7 (build #2) and it's great. Not a final version yet, so may not yet be as stable as she is looking for (though, I've only had 1 random reboot in 5 days of running different CM7 roms, otherwise, absolutely no other issues for me). But if you install it and set it up for her, and point her towards all the themes available, I'm sure she'd be happy.
So there's my experience, hope it provides some insight into the options for the Incredible I'm sure everyone else has their pros and cons, but I have honestly not been disappointed with any of the ROMs I've installed. These developers do a GREAT job!
Good luck

I put IncROM on my wife's Incredible as her first ROM - it was good looking, stable, quite fast, and had insane battery life w/ the stock HTC kernel.
She's since migrated to UlitmateDroid with me, as it has a whole different look/feel, and tons of options, as do many AOSP ROMs. Give AOSP a look for something different.
If not AOSP, some of the Z ROMs are pretty cool too.
That's part of the fun of being rooted; getting to try on different stuff, see what fits you best.
Happy modding!
Let me dig up the links again for ya.
Being someone who has tried a lot of ROM's and Kernels..
Sense kernels run the best for incredibles. I haven't found a non-sense (aka AOSP) that will run without a few significant bugs.
One of the quickest, most stable and clean sense ROM's would be
- Sky Raider's 3.5:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764787
An excellent Kernel that majorly helped improve my battery life
- Chad's Incredikernel :
http://chad0989.dyndns.org/2.6.32.27-incredikernel-12232010-plus25v.zip
You will need clockwork installed to create nandroid backups and also to flash new ROM's and Kernels, and additionally rooting your phone can be found below:
http://unrevoked.com/#inc
>> Everyone has their preference and I highly respect every developer on here, but there was just a few things in Lou's Kernel that bugged me.
I'm sure you will try a few ROM's before sticking with one, the above are just my suggestions. When running Chad's kernel, do not use setCPU or anything like it because it already has (a better) one built in that helps extend battery life with screen off, and performance/battery with screen on
Thanks everyone! And welcome to the forums brother
SCH-I500 - Vanilla Froyo AOSP 0.8.1/Voodoo5/NexTheme
Just a thought but if stock Sense is boring to her, she may eventually want to try an AOSP ROM. In that case, I would recommend MIUI with Invisiblek #28 and, by that time, I'm sure Cyanogenmod 7 will have a stable release. Its bad a** and gingerbread based. Also, if she decides to stay with Sense and simply wants more options for it, Virtuous is another stable Sense ROM.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Try out 'Launcher Pro' (maybe PRO if you like it). It has really cool transition effects that your wife would probably love (I love 'em)
It's what I use instead of the regular sense UI.
Check this vid out for a better idea:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIK9yBlWYt4
You can get this from the droid market for free. PRO gets you the widgets I think, not much else.
You can also adjust the speed of transition that will make your phone seem much faster. I know the stock incredible homescreens are pretty laggy.
Hey everyone!
I'll be honest; my phone has been running sprint lovers rom since late december last year and it works great. Since then, I haven't really looked at the scene or any developments (same with android). However, I started getting prompted about the OTA update, so I figure its time to look at a new custom ROM. Sadly sprint lovers no longer appears to be updated - I liked it because everything just worked.
I have the following requirements: All phone features need to work.
So, I found the AllianceROM, from what I can tell everything works with the rom. Are there any other roms I may want to look at? Will my nand unlock and root work? Most of the rom installers say to run the latest version of autoroot - is that really necessary?
Thanks everyone, I appreciate your input!!

Hello there, friend.
The previous posts have everything pretty much nailed down... but there's a few thinks I have to add.
As a Newbie that I am, I have been flashing nonstop, trying many roms.
Basically and on a quick run-down of what I remember right now..:
If you want your phone to look Apple-ish, try MIUI. not everything works, or you have to jump through hoops to get it to work. Personally, not my cup of tea, but it's light (sizewise) and quick. Too many bugs, tho.
Cyanogen is the standard AOSP (Open Source) ROM. I didn't like it that much. With it, I found I am a Sense guy. Still a little buggy but 4G works (a big downfall in many AOSP ROMS).
Virus' Kingdom REVOlution is a great Sense 3.0 ROM. MY pet peeves with it are: Browser force closes (FC) and no spanish dictionary for touch input. I am bi-lingual so I NEED this. This ROM has a carrousel (sp) home window and it REALLY LOOKS NICE. It's a battery hog, but you will get that with sense 3.0 roms and 2.1 with 3.0 elements pushed into it. It's the price you pay for nice eye-candy. If you get this ROM, make sure you partition your card as directed in one of their thousands of posts. Search will do you well here. This is because the ROM occupies a lot of space in your phone and as you install apps, you will eventually be left with very low memory for your other tasks.
Mik's ROMS are very solid, but I simply don't like the way they look. Truth is, I can't be simpler than this. If you make a ROM, make it look nice. The idea behind rooting, for many, is to be able to use the hotspot capabilities, but for many of us, looks also matter. Sometimes, a LOT.
Myn's ROMS, I define with just a simple phrase: ROCK SOLID.
* Warm Z is awesome. Landscape support for main screen, polished beautiful looks and great battery life make this a keeper... if you don't care about having 4G. Since this ROM is based off the Desire HD, it has no 4G support.
* Warm 2.2 is the most solid of them all. Everything works. Towards the end, I ran my battery close to 24 hrs with this mod and the Netarchy 4.3.4 (HAVS, aggressive yaddah plus whatever, I can't remember now) and had NO ISSUES AT ALL. It was a daily for more than 2 months. With some mods that Myn lists in that same page you can make it look even nicer.
STEEL ROMS are basically stock roms that have been tweaked to WORK, and that, they do, and they do it very well. As with these kinds of ROMS, expect heavy files (anywhere from 250 - 300 MB and maybe more).
I hope this has helped you a bit, friend. Happy wiping!
yeah and viperboys scripts are badass battery life savers
Here is the link to a ROM with sprintlover's base :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118063
Try Vaelpak's GB ROM: http://vaelek.com/index.php?/forum/47-vaelpak-gingerbread-aosp/?. I recently jumped into MIUI, and its very stable, contrary to what someone else said. CM7 may be the "standard," but Deck and Vaelpak are very good AOSP ROMs. Kernel-wise (for AOSP), I love the sz kernel and viperboy's uv scripts are great.
Hi,
I'm usually a LG Optimus Speed user but my friend got a HTC Desire. He's not that much into updating ROMs and stuff and atm he is on one of the latest official cm7 nightlys.
Now that he is here we want him to get a new ROM but as I can see there are so much of them out there and I just wanted to ask you if you could give me an advice in what ROM could be good for him. It shouldnt be a build with lots of bugs and stuff cause he can't update it etc. It should be stable and working fine without difficult tweaks etc.
Thanks for your help!
What does he want from a phone?
What does he want from a User Interface? (Does he want sense?)
What are his disappointments with the phone so far?
lol..Psychoanalysis?
Yes.
OP, ask your friend if a tree falls down in the forrest, will there be any sound? The answer to this will determine whether miui is worth trying or not.
He already had MIUI once a few month ago and he (same as me) diskliked it. Cause of the missing App Drawer and stuff.
He want a stable phone. A working camera, if it is possible smooth scrolling. I think a modern ICS rom or something like that should be fine. He is not that of a hardcore user with benchmarks and stuff.
Stable and ics don't mix together.
ok lemme try that, ics looking but I think thats gonna be no problem with go launcher etc. He is used to CM7, perhaps something like that out there?
forgive me, I was being facetious. I dont like miui either.
Well IMHO, we're looking at AOSP / Sense 2.0 (or lower) Gingerbread ROM. What do you think DZ?
Quite agree. If he doesn't want to play with dialers and launchers, get him a stock sense ROM. Else let him try Sense and Aosp Gingerbread and decide. You can flash each, take recovery images and demo them.
Yep.
Well he is on a CM7 nightly, so he probably has a reasonable idea of the aesthetics of AOSP.
If I wanted to recommend an AOSP ROM (with obvious exception of course) I wouldn't necessarily say CM7 was the best rom to use as an example for smoothness and performance. Oxygen is usually a good place to start with AOSP. Or maybe even Mildwild.
different Launchers etc are no problem. We are just looking for some easy update. Like I said, its the latest official CM7 nightly (from november I think).
What do you think about Runnydroid or MildWild?
Once again ive just had a look at the brilliant desire index: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
and the best 2.0 or lower sense ROM imho is actually SuperNova Extreme: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045824
or Cool IceCream Sense which is Gingerbread sense 2.0 but has an ICS feel to it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1279016
I dont see runnymede being particularly fast, smooth or bug free. We're looking at a rom thats for a much newer device than the desire. Its close to the boundaries of what the desire can do.
Mildwild (Oxygen based one) has reportedly good battery life and if the theme is liked, probably a good choice. Lots of script tweaks in there. Or simply Oxygen that it is based on.
I haven't tried MildWild though, but if I were to, it would be the oxy version.
OP, I would recommend the roms of the first two people who replied to you. Droidzone for Sense rom and rootSU for AOSP, take your pick.

Haha. Neither of us have recommended our own roms. We try to be impartial
ok
I just installed the MildWild and its working fine so far! Just another question. Do we have to install a new kernel or adjust ril/bb settings somehow?
RIL and Kernel packaged in the rom should be fine. Shouldnt be any need to change. Infact its a _thalamus kernel. I dont think there is any better for oxygen (Assuming you went for the oxygen version?)
What is BB?

I'm not sure that kernel can be replaced there because of the camera.
SwiftKeyed from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk.
Yep, AOSP driver. I would expect the kernel by gen_Sheiskopff would work, but not sure how its been developed recently. Dont see him around the desire forums much anymore
