Hey everyone!
I'll be honest; my phone has been running sprint lovers rom since late december last year and it works great. Since then, I haven't really looked at the scene or any developments (same with android). However, I started getting prompted about the OTA update, so I figure its time to look at a new custom ROM. Sadly sprint lovers no longer appears to be updated - I liked it because everything just worked.
I have the following requirements: All phone features need to work.
So, I found the AllianceROM, from what I can tell everything works with the rom. Are there any other roms I may want to look at? Will my nand unlock and root work? Most of the rom installers say to run the latest version of autoroot - is that really necessary?
Thanks everyone, I appreciate your input!!
kingsrom alliance is great also hyrbids sense 3.0 themed all sense 3.0 rom's are Good but have horrible battery life cuz of no custom kernels because HTC hasn't released the kernel source

Hello there, friend.
The previous posts have everything pretty much nailed down... but there's a few thinks I have to add.
As a Newbie that I am, I have been flashing nonstop, trying many roms.
Basically and on a quick run-down of what I remember right now..:
If you want your phone to look Apple-ish, try MIUI. not everything works, or you have to jump through hoops to get it to work. Personally, not my cup of tea, but it's light (sizewise) and quick. Too many bugs, tho.
Cyanogen is the standard AOSP (Open Source) ROM. I didn't like it that much. With it, I found I am a Sense guy. Still a little buggy but 4G works (a big downfall in many AOSP ROMS).
Virus' Kingdom REVOlution is a great Sense 3.0 ROM. MY pet peeves with it are: Browser force closes (FC) and no spanish dictionary for touch input. I am bi-lingual so I NEED this. This ROM has a carrousel (sp) home window and it REALLY LOOKS NICE. It's a battery hog, but you will get that with sense 3.0 roms and 2.1 with 3.0 elements pushed into it. It's the price you pay for nice eye-candy. If you get this ROM, make sure you partition your card as directed in one of their thousands of posts. Search will do you well here. This is because the ROM occupies a lot of space in your phone and as you install apps, you will eventually be left with very low memory for your other tasks.
Mik's ROMS are very solid, but I simply don't like the way they look. Truth is, I can't be simpler than this. If you make a ROM, make it look nice. The idea behind rooting, for many, is to be able to use the hotspot capabilities, but for many of us, looks also matter. Sometimes, a LOT.
Myn's ROMS, I define with just a simple phrase: ROCK SOLID.
* Warm Z is awesome. Landscape support for main screen, polished beautiful looks and great battery life make this a keeper... if you don't care about having 4G. Since this ROM is based off the Desire HD, it has no 4G support.
* Warm 2.2 is the most solid of them all. Everything works. Towards the end, I ran my battery close to 24 hrs with this mod and the Netarchy 4.3.4 (HAVS, aggressive yaddah plus whatever, I can't remember now) and had NO ISSUES AT ALL. It was a daily for more than 2 months. With some mods that Myn lists in that same page you can make it look even nicer.
STEEL ROMS are basically stock roms that have been tweaked to WORK, and that, they do, and they do it very well. As with these kinds of ROMS, expect heavy files (anywhere from 250 - 300 MB and maybe more).
I hope this has helped you a bit, friend. Happy wiping!
yeah and viperboys scripts are badass battery life savers
Here is the link to a ROM with sprintlover's base :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118063
Try Vaelpak's GB ROM: http://vaelek.com/index.php?/forum/47-vaelpak-gingerbread-aosp/?. I recently jumped into MIUI, and its very stable, contrary to what someone else said. CM7 may be the "standard," but Deck and Vaelpak are very good AOSP ROMs. Kernel-wise (for AOSP), I love the sz kernel and viperboy's uv scripts are great.

I know this question has probably been posted a million times, but Roms update so fast in this day and age that the answer to it changes daily.
I have an Evo 4G (bought on the day it was released), so it's version 0002
I used the stock rom for a few weeks and then upgraded to BakedSnack, which I really liked until it was no longer made.
Now I want to hard reset again, I already tried Azrael (which was super ugly and tacky) and now i'm on Fresh, which doesn't seem so different.
I've read through the wiki entry of all the roms but it doesnt really explain much of the differences, and I was hoping to find ROMS based on 2.3 but I didn't see any that were available.
What are the BIG names out there, the most stable, fastest roms that are the most popular. This is whats important to me:
- Sense UI (I like it!)
- No sprint bull (none of their programs, voicemail, navigation, nfl, all gone)
- Interface must be snappy
- Good Battery life
- All hardware must be functional (4G, GPS, Camera, leds, everything must work)
- Great if it can come with some useful software like- Swype, File Explorer, AppBrain, WifiTether, SuperUser, FlashLight, etc...
Any ideas?
Which roms do you guys use? and why?
mods please move to correct section
op I suggest plutonium, mikfroyo, or myns is themed very heavily, any way you go all will look the same(ish) with the exception of colors changes here and there and transparancy added in places, most will be optimized and be fast
Check out Myn's or MikFroyo
myns warm 2.2 rls5
mikfroyo 4.4
burntdroid
Check out mikfroyo. I've been using it for around 2 weeks and I love it. If you don't like the way it looks you can always flash over a theme like I did. I flashed over slate sense which can be found in the themes and apps section.
Mikfroyo is very battery friendly and the best/smoothest sense rom I've used.

You are going to get flamed posting this in development; this belongs in Q&A. Anyways you should do research as to what you like/want as you are going to have tons of issues with the rom I like and vice versa.
Currently I use Salvage-rom 0.9.6. It is gingerbread, and it is fast. But it does have problem with random reboots and the video camera doesn't work.
Check out Azrael X. Pretty good battery for a non-AOSP rom and ricsim78 (the dev) is pretty quick with the updates when sprint does a OTA.
I'm currently on EViO 1.7.7 b/c for me it's been the ROM that gives the best balance of great battery life w/ great performance.

Funny thing is, this is the same asshat that went into the Azrael X thread and trashed the dev Ric about his latest 4.0 ROM... then the genius comes and posts this? Get bent troll...
Here's another vote for Azrael's X. I've tried Mikfroyo, Myn's, and Azrael's recently, and the Azrael X 4.0 has been my favorite of the bunch so far.
Battery life is great, and the font he uses looks great on the phone!
for a sense rom, asrael X is the best hands down.
Darkstar coconut is an excellent font as well from myns thread
Jesus, so much hate.. and you're calling ME a troll??
All I said was that Azrael's rom was very ugly, his wallpapers are tacky, his ringtones are childish, it's nothing an adult could carry around with him without some extreme modifications.

Agreed
indefinably awesome, although if your thirst for blood is more on the cutting edge Cm7 or kings, fresh, mikfroyo and i know I am forgetting some but are all good in their own special ways its just what you are looking for that is important. All around though the Minions do great outstanding work and always make a complete rom fully capable and with lots of tweeks along with a very large community support network that has plenty of themes.
Currently running Myns RLS-5 with DT a2sd, Kings 11 kERNAL (diving into the salvaged kernals tonight though. I miss the 20hr battery life days lol. Any side insight for a compatible kernal with myns RLS-5?

If you want a cool look: Myns or Mikfroyo
If you want speed: Mikfroyo
Battery/Stable: EViO, Fresh, or Ava
What I personally would do is get a EViO, Fresh, or Ava and put a theme on it.

Yep, Ill have to agree with you on this one.
Hey guys my wife has an htc droid incredible that she wants better performance out of. As of yet she is always complaining about how it sucks and its slow and boring. I'm sure she will want something she can use a theme on, and something extremely stable..the last thing I need is to hear her freaking out that it is messing up on her.
Also I have no idea if there is a way to create a nandroid backup on the dinc like I do with the fascinate with clockwork, hopefully there is because whatever I end up doing I need to be able to go back without a hitch...
Any and all thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated guys! Thanks!

Sense or non-sense?
Its the wife..of course nonsense. Lol really though I'm sure sense but as long as i am able to revert no problem we can try non-sense. If she ends up not liking any of it I need to be able to restore to like it never happened and she can go on with all her stuff there lol

Try that or maybe Incredibly Re-Engineered, and maybe update to Lou's #9 for a kernel.
Awesome. What are the general steps to backing up and then flashing the above? (or anything else on the dinc for that matter) the most I have done is unrevoked and that's just as easy as super one click root lol

I recommend the Incredibly Re-Engineered rom. It is sense based and has been very stable and very good with both battery and performance. I am using v2.3.1 and the incredikernel kernel.
Also, I did not see if anyone responded to your question about the backup with clockwork. Clockwork backup does work with the incredible. I have had to use it a few times myself
edit: Oh by the way this is my first post. Hello to everyone here at XDA!
For "non" Sense I'd definitely go with CyanogenMod 7 RC1. It's fast, stable, and GINGERBREAD!!!

Hi.....welcome
As for the OP: After you figure out the nandroid backup stuff (which isn't too hard, esp since you have experience with your device)....
I stuck with Virtuous for a while which was basically an improved stock ROM...probably not what your wife wants if she wants it different and finds stock "boring" (but still a great rom). Unfortunately, not much development there anymore.
Skyraider sense was my next move. Loved it! Still sense, very stable, but lots of modifications and customizations available (ie: themes). A major upset was the fact that ihtfp69 stopped working on it for the time being.
However, I'm currently running CM7 (build #2) and it's great. Not a final version yet, so may not yet be as stable as she is looking for (though, I've only had 1 random reboot in 5 days of running different CM7 roms, otherwise, absolutely no other issues for me). But if you install it and set it up for her, and point her towards all the themes available, I'm sure she'd be happy.
So there's my experience, hope it provides some insight into the options for the Incredible I'm sure everyone else has their pros and cons, but I have honestly not been disappointed with any of the ROMs I've installed. These developers do a GREAT job!
Good luck

I put IncROM on my wife's Incredible as her first ROM - it was good looking, stable, quite fast, and had insane battery life w/ the stock HTC kernel.
She's since migrated to UlitmateDroid with me, as it has a whole different look/feel, and tons of options, as do many AOSP ROMs. Give AOSP a look for something different.
If not AOSP, some of the Z ROMs are pretty cool too.
That's part of the fun of being rooted; getting to try on different stuff, see what fits you best.
Happy modding!
Let me dig up the links again for ya.
Being someone who has tried a lot of ROM's and Kernels..
Sense kernels run the best for incredibles. I haven't found a non-sense (aka AOSP) that will run without a few significant bugs.
One of the quickest, most stable and clean sense ROM's would be
- Sky Raider's 3.5:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764787
An excellent Kernel that majorly helped improve my battery life
- Chad's Incredikernel :
http://chad0989.dyndns.org/2.6.32.27-incredikernel-12232010-plus25v.zip
You will need clockwork installed to create nandroid backups and also to flash new ROM's and Kernels, and additionally rooting your phone can be found below:
http://unrevoked.com/#inc
>> Everyone has their preference and I highly respect every developer on here, but there was just a few things in Lou's Kernel that bugged me.
I'm sure you will try a few ROM's before sticking with one, the above are just my suggestions. When running Chad's kernel, do not use setCPU or anything like it because it already has (a better) one built in that helps extend battery life with screen off, and performance/battery with screen on
Thanks everyone! And welcome to the forums brother
SCH-I500 - Vanilla Froyo AOSP 0.8.1/Voodoo5/NexTheme
Just a thought but if stock Sense is boring to her, she may eventually want to try an AOSP ROM. In that case, I would recommend MIUI with Invisiblek #28 and, by that time, I'm sure Cyanogenmod 7 will have a stable release. Its bad a** and gingerbread based. Also, if she decides to stay with Sense and simply wants more options for it, Virtuous is another stable Sense ROM.

Try out 'Launcher Pro' (maybe PRO if you like it). It has really cool transition effects that your wife would probably love (I love 'em)
It's what I use instead of the regular sense UI.
Check this vid out for a better idea:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIK9yBlWYt4
You can get this from the droid market for free. PRO gets you the widgets I think, not much else.
You can also adjust the speed of transition that will make your phone seem much faster. I know the stock incredible homescreens are pretty laggy.
Hi again everyone, quick question on ROMs. I'm currently using OMJs 2.2 version 4.5 (so it seems) and I do enjoy it. I like the stability and it seems pretty fast. I didn't even know it wasn't a stock ROM until recently (as you probably know from an earlier post).
I just read that there will be no more OMJ EVO 4g ROMs but I'm looking for something similar but as updated and stable as possible. Maybe faster and with more custom animations, etc (I'm a big fan of the sleep / wake animation). I just tried a couple of Kings Roms and ended up going back to the OMJ. I tried unleashed V6 and wasn't a fan of the layout and then Shooter, which seemed cool being Gingerbread but I had issues with certain features not working.
I guess I'm looking for something similar to the OMJ rom I have as far as stability and compatibility plus more speed and updated tweaks & effects.
I know there are alot of roms and each have their own "feel", I think I like the OMJ "feel" and would like something like it, even with different themes.
Sorry to bug you guys but I trust your opinions and look forward to any input.
Thanks much, as always,
Dan.
Omj is incredibly old. You should try fresh; they stay stock in most cases. If you're looking for something less stocky try a mik rom. Look for rom threads with most viewS. They ussualy have most stability.
I this k you should go all out against stock and use the configuration in my sig
Good luck
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.
I was just wondering what are the lightest (as in space), smoothest yet good looking roms out there.
Personally, can't go wrong with CM7. Xplod by Team Nocturnal, also AOSP, is a great rom. If you want small [as in space] then you will want AOSP, as sense roms are always bigger.
Yeah aosp for sure, salvagemod,cm like Roxx said etc. These are all pretty light rom's.

I personally love aosp aswell but everytime i flash one, my wimax doesnt go as fast as with sense roms... If it wasnt for that, id most def. Be on cm7
nExVsO
Try Deck and then flash the Savage Zen BFS HAVS kernel. The Rom is based on CM7 but with all the bling that CM ads removed. The savage zen kernel gave me disgustingly good battery life. The whole Rom as is, is under 80mb. Can't get much lighter than that. sz kernel should resolve your wimax speed issue too. I notice that 4G always seemed slower on CM's kernel (which is what most of the AOSP roms use, including Miui). SZ's kernel fixed a lot of little things like that.
O cool thnx man, does sz kernel support hdmi also?
You've got great information above. AOSP is always smaller, lighter. I'm using kushdeck's gingerbread-evo-deck 1.3d (GB v2.3.5), which is built on a solid Cyanogenmod base. It's technically still a beta of GB v2.3.5, but I have as yet to have any issue with it. Plus, if like me you like the stock Vicual Voice Mail, use the ed-gapps with vm. Note that CM did this first and has this available also.
Both the SZ and Tiamat kernels support HDMwIn, have sbc versions available, etc. I find that the latest Tiamat 4.0.8 kernel works the best for me overall but of course your phone may feel otherwise.
Oh, a nice trick if you have issues with Wifi, Wimax or GPS after flashing an AOSP ROM. Once your ROM is built, make a nand backup of it. Now, flash one of the rooted stock ROMs (I use virus's 453.651.1). Once its flashed and you boot up, immediately reboot into recovery and restore your backup of your favorite AOSP ROM. This works because some drivers (like the GPS driver) are or can be changed/updated during a flash, but are not during a restore.
This has fixed non-functioning & poorly functioning GPS for many (including me), fixed wifi issues for some, and a few say that it improved their wimax speeds. If you're experiencing any of those issues, it only costs a few minutes of your time to find out, but of course that's your decision.
Anyway, I hope that the info is useful. Thank you for your time.

What I need is a ROM with working 4g, GPS and Camera
The phone is used for work.
I drive all over place, putting 100+ miles a day, so GPS is very important for me.
All my jobs are recieved via Google email.
I rather use 4g to pick my gps loc quickly and get load my emails quickly..
At the moment, I have to wait 3-5min for the email to be recieved and/or open to read. My GPS sometimes tells me, can not find my current location and it sucks. TIME is money in my line of work. Every wasteful minutes I can cut off = more money for me.
Camera and Video Recorder is another thing mandatory in my work. Uploading and sending it to corporate. Speed speed speed (4g)
During my drive time - I use my phone as a radio..
work hours - 10-12hrs a day.. so I need a rom that will benefit me the most.
I make alot of phone calls, alot of emailing, uploading pics and videos (short under 1min). I tend to stay on 4g as much as I can before I switch to 3g or turn it off during downtimes. I would like to have 4g on all day (10-12hr) before recharging. I do have a recharger in my car though, so I would say there is atleast 1-2hrs worth of charge time during my working hours.
I was told to check these 3 roms out but can't see what the difference are.
thank you in advance.
Well. I can only speak on Nitrous as I haven't tried the others. But I will say, if you aren't concerned about having the prettiest toy, its a great one. Very smooth. Expect a stock type of rom with alot of CPU speed tweaks baked in. Very similar to the stock in terms of what it gives you visually. Some nice little graphical changes but nothing impressive.
Its very good for what you are looking for. I never had a problem with the GPS. Battery life was about on par with stock. But I would recommend rom toolbox pro and under clocking the kernel .
I actually always keep this rom on my SD in case something happens crazy with the current one. That way I can always flash back to something minimalistic and stable. Give it a shot...
...I must let you know tho CM9 has been very stable for me as well and you get 4.0.4 opposed to Nitrous 2.3.5
CM9 is so far the best rom I've flashed so far. Only downside is battery life has been iffy at best.
Give MIUI from swiper a try also. 2.3.2 was very nice. Stay away from MIUI ICS builds. They've been quite buggy for me so far.
Hope that helps. GL
With less clutter here than your other thread, I will throw a loop:
Try Cyanogenmod 7.2 everything works nearly flawless. I use gps status app, and if you need more accuracy use galandy's gps fix (search for these).
You do need to flash gapps as well, for your google services. Just download the rom and gapps from cyanogenmod.com
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I don't agree with trying 7.2 cynogenmod, a great rom, but wouldn't be good for your situation. 7.2 is a AOSP rom which doesn't give you the capability of updating your prl, which should be a priority if your traveling and on the go. Out of the three roms, synergy is outdated and the developers have moved on. Classic 0.1.0 is a optimized base rom that is strippped down and meant for performance. If you like a stock feel, definitely a good choice. Nitrous is a 1.0 sense rom that's very fast, would be my choice of the three. If you want my opinion, I wouldn't choose any of the three. Go with a senseless 1.0 rom, which has sense stripped out. This gives you more internal memory, faster speeds, and makes for a fast phone. Here's my choices based on the public's opinion of what is the best out right now for our EVO.
1. senseless - Alter RC2 rom
2. sense - tommytomatoes finale
3. AOSP - Deck's Reloaded
I simply flash 00001.prl by tecknowfile.
Prl's are fairly universal imo

Simple enough then, jump on the bandwagon and get Deck's Reloaded .44, definitely fastes rom on our evo at the moment, has working 4G, and all the google apps are inverted black to give a sexy sleek feel.
With even LESS clutter, read the threads and SEE what the differences are

GL

you lost me when you said 4.0.4 vs 2.3.5 - IDK wtf ur talking about.
isnt CM9 - AOSP?
what is MIUI? ICS?
also, what does toolbox Pro do and how do I underclock a kernel? (App? if so, name)

3. AOSP - Deck's Reloaded

this helped me out alot. also I thought AOSP doesnt have a working 4g or was it Cynmod
you have me intriqued with the senseless 1.0 rom. I could care less for bloat apps and other bs. So the less, the better. With that said, senseless 1.0 = senseless - Alter RC2 rom???

I've read each one of them, 2 of them doesnt tell me what kernel they are running and other the info that is stated, I have no idea what it means. It's not like I kept up with all the lingo and terms since I was here last time.
Last thing I remember was Gingerbread coming out.
Also, 1.5 yrs ago, each rom had a detail info of what they had. What apps they added, removed, etc... now not so much.
im slowly re-learning what is new in the evo 4g world.

4.04 is icecream sandwiched while 2.3.5 is gingerbread
Cm9 is based off ice cream sandwich(4.xx)
Cm7 is based off gingerbread (2.3x)
Tommy finale is based off gingerbread and so is any sense based Rom for the EVO. No ics for awhile
Miui has both an ice cream version and gingerbread version. You're going to have to search that. In order to over and underclock the CPU, you need a custom kernel. If you use tommys Rom (my current setup) I would use the underground kernel by ca1ne. ROM tool box will help with that. Or system tuner. Another good app
Here's the kernel thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570308

Sorry bud for the lack of a good explanation. These guys are all correct in directing you to the rom that would suit you best. Especially the last post. I was trying to say to stay away from miui ics for the time being. It's been quite buggy and laggy even with mason kernel compared to team dirts CM9. Mini is great and easy but stuck to a gingerbread base if you like it.

Senseless just means that Rosie is stripped out of the rom which takes up to much space and memory. Alter rom comes with Go Launcher Ex baked in as the launcher, but you can choose any launcher your comfortable with. The only reason why I recommend Alter rom is because it is the fastest/snappiest senseless rom available. Using a2sd, I was using less than 60 MB internal space. Great for gaming and battery life. Graynode is the developer and is releasing 1.0 later this week, but RC2 is worth it. Just to clarify, it is a 1.0 sense based rom, similar to what came stock on your Evo, but the Rosie and everything sense has been stripped out of it, hence the name "senseless".
