[Q] What ROM? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm usually a LG Optimus Speed user but my friend got a HTC Desire. He's not that much into updating ROMs and stuff and atm he is on one of the latest official cm7 nightlys.
Now that he is here we want him to get a new ROM but as I can see there are so much of them out there and I just wanted to ask you if you could give me an advice in what ROM could be good for him. It shouldnt be a build with lots of bugs and stuff cause he can't update it etc. It should be stable and working fine without difficult tweaks etc.
Thanks for your help!

What does he want from a phone?
What does he want from a User Interface? (Does he want sense?)
What are his disappointments with the phone so far?

lol..Psychoanalysis?

Yes.
OP, ask your friend if a tree falls down in the forrest, will there be any sound? The answer to this will determine whether miui is worth trying or not.

He already had MIUI once a few month ago and he (same as me) diskliked it. Cause of the missing App Drawer and stuff.
He want a stable phone. A working camera, if it is possible smooth scrolling. I think a modern ICS rom or something like that should be fine. He is not that of a hardcore user with benchmarks and stuff.

Stable and ics don't mix together.

ok lemme try that, ics looking but I think thats gonna be no problem with go launcher etc. He is used to CM7, perhaps something like that out there?

forgive me, I was being facetious. I dont like miui either.
Well IMHO, we're looking at AOSP / Sense 2.0 (or lower) Gingerbread ROM. What do you think DZ?

Quite agree. If he doesn't want to play with dialers and launchers, get him a stock sense ROM. Else let him try Sense and Aosp Gingerbread and decide. You can flash each, take recovery images and demo them.

Yep.
Well he is on a CM7 nightly, so he probably has a reasonable idea of the aesthetics of AOSP.
If I wanted to recommend an AOSP ROM (with obvious exception of course) I wouldn't necessarily say CM7 was the best rom to use as an example for smoothness and performance. Oxygen is usually a good place to start with AOSP. Or maybe even Mildwild.

different Launchers etc are no problem. We are just looking for some easy update. Like I said, its the latest official CM7 nightly (from november I think).
What do you think about Runnydroid or MildWild?

Once again ive just had a look at the brilliant desire index: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
and the best 2.0 or lower sense ROM imho is actually SuperNova Extreme: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045824
or Cool IceCream Sense which is Gingerbread sense 2.0 but has an ICS feel to it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1279016

I dont see runnymede being particularly fast, smooth or bug free. We're looking at a rom thats for a much newer device than the desire. Its close to the boundaries of what the desire can do.
Mildwild (Oxygen based one) has reportedly good battery life and if the theme is liked, probably a good choice. Lots of script tweaks in there. Or simply Oxygen that it is based on.
I haven't tried MildWild though, but if I were to, it would be the oxy version.

OP, I would recommend the roms of the first two people who replied to you. Droidzone for Sense rom and rootSU for AOSP, take your pick.

Haha. Neither of us have recommended our own roms. We try to be impartial

ok
I just installed the MildWild and its working fine so far! Just another question. Do we have to install a new kernel or adjust ril/bb settings somehow?

RIL and Kernel packaged in the rom should be fine. Shouldnt be any need to change. Infact its a _thalamus kernel. I dont think there is any better for oxygen (Assuming you went for the oxygen version?)
What is BB?

I'm not sure that kernel can be replaced there because of the camera.

Yep, AOSP driver. I would expect the kernel by gen_Sheiskopff would work, but not sure how its been developed recently. Dont see him around the desire forums much anymore

Cyanogenmod 7 vs Oxygen

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to compare ROMs from different developers with the intention of finding out which one is best. Such threads always end up with one camp bashing the other.
Instead, I just want to have a feel of which one is more widely used. CM7 is feature-packed, while Oxygen is designed to be clean and minimalist. Both have their merits, and I regularly jump ship.
While I'm on Oxygen, CM7 went out of beta, so I am contemplating going back on CM7.

Oh sorry, I thought it'd be appropriate to post here because this is where people come looking for ROM. :O
Used CM7 for the sole reason that Oxygen does not have yet the long press volume to skip track starting the official updates from N1. Once Oxygen has it, it's still my choice.
Last time I installed oxygen I couldn't uninstall the latest version of maps (which for my purposes ain't as good as that last 4 version with clearer road names as you zoom in etc). I cant sort that myself, but On cm7 you can. I find cm7 bombproof with great battery but I'm staying with an old 44 radio.
I use Oxygen because it had gingerbread at the time it came out. I tried CM7 but there is no feature that will make me switch from Oxygen to CM7.
I use cm7 because it supports arabic and rtl language.
really stupid question.
oxygen mostly based on cm development.

Why? He is not asking which is better, but which is more popular, and I don't think you can tell that from which rom is based on which. If you even bothered to read OP you'd know that.
On topic: For me it is definately Oxygen. The stock android is more than enough for my needs. The only thing i'm missing is the long press volume to skip track, but actually i almost never listen to music anyway.
Cm7. It has theme chooser

I think Oxygen don't. Oxygen is an AOSP ROM with some customization done by AdamG and _thalamus.
I posted "other"
I jump from Oxygen to Redux, CM isn't a good choice for me... too bloated, I prefer simple (& light) rom
I remove also many apps from basic Oxygen & Redux, I prefer to stay slim
both are very cured & almost bugs free even if right now I prefer Redux for a couple of features integrated in the settings rom

Wow, that's a big call... I'd like to see how Sense/HD roms come from cm???
Yes, there's *alot* of CM based roms, but Oxygen is not amongst them and it's just stupid to say that everything comes from CM.
I like Oxygen - it's slick and very good on the battery... no it doesn't have as many built in features as CM but that's not for me anyway. This is the beauty of choice though... work out what suits you best and go with that.
M.
CM7, Purely for the mods and hacks that it has, Oxygen is also a very good rom, don't be swayed by what other people are using though, use both roms and then decide for yourself.
About Oxygen
Oxygen ROM is an AOSP source built ROM (ie. not a mod of any sense based ROM), it's minimal, it's superfast and mostly bugfree.
As Oxygen is not a mod/port of any HTC/CyanogenMod or any other ROM and may not be to everyones liking, it's minimalistic and basic but I'm open to ideas and suggestions for improving the ROM.

In my opinion the question is not "Witch is the best Android 2.3 rom for HTC Desire ?", it is " Witch of these Android 2.3 roms is more suitable for me ?"
I say that becouse i try all the roms from the launch of HTC Desire until now and i like all of them. I`ve had miui rom for like an haf a year at the start, becouse i didn`t like so much Android 2.2 froyo, then i migrate to the cook of devs around XDA, and CM7, Oxygen also.
I think that, when you have a free day, you should try these roms: MIUI, CM7, the one made by baadnewz, it`s much stable than the others for now, the one made by Alex (i like his roms from when he start doing stuff for HTC Desire).
I think these is the big categories made by me.
Personaly i like and use for now the one made by baadnewz (the stable v1.0.8)
If youd like effects you shoud try MIUI first.
If youd like simplicity and speed you shoud try CM7.
If youd like sense and a little speed you shoud try the one made by baadnewz.
Without anger, i apreciate all the work from all the devs around here. I have a big respect upon them (i`m not able to do anything then flash a rom )
This is just my opinion.
MIUI of course
I think the question is incorrect. Everyone chooses what he likes, what fits his needs more.
Want latest HTC Sense, that was not designed for Desire, but theoretically can run there - go for RCMixS
Want slim and quick but naked ROM - go for Oxigen
What pros of CM I don't know. Basically it's like fat Oxygen, with added features.
Despite they look different, but have very similar concept of UI. MIUI has different approach, which for my taste is much more successful. As it claims on MIUI official website, it takes best of Android and iPhone. Totally agree. Tried latest RCMixS after I tested MIUI and couldn't keep it even couple days, returned back to MIUI.
But it's of course my opinion.
Non-existent!

Sorry, but there's no such thing as "the best ROM" for any device. There's ROM's you like and ROM's you don't. That's like asking what's the best film, or best music track, or best food. Everyone has their own opinion which is why life is so much fun!
Personally, I've been using Baadnewz InsertCoin Nightly for weeks (now on v43). Superb Gingerbread ROM and lot's of great features from Sense 3 too
I prefer insertcoin. Very fast, no lags, bugs - everything is ok
This is Development forum and I believe this thread needs to be moved.
And I rather prefer Oxygen Everyone basically likes different ROM, but better one is with smaller amount of bugs

I´m addicted to InsertCoin too.

I User IC v43, withe Alex Diaz Theme 13 (Found on IC Downloadpage too)
But i suggest, you download 2-3 ROM´s you "like", and install them, and find out which one is Great for you

stop spamming here its a dev section
Since I got the phone with Sense on it I take preference to Sense ROMS, I have also tried MIUI and AOSP ROMS like Cyanogen and GingerVillain all of them offer something that the other would be lacking.
So for me out of the 3 variants these are what I use,
• Sense ROM: Reflex S
• AOSP ROM: GingerVillain
• MIUI ROM: MIUI XJ
I use all of them and I change every few weeks when I feel for a change of scenery, they all for are the best ROM because they are made by the best developers.
As for the BEST ROM for you, thats is your decision!!!
A very generic question in a wrong section.
Hi,
I think this post is usefull so different users can state why they choose this or that ROM.
In my case I currently use MIUI (from XJ) mostly because that ROM is fast, has a very nice interface, the menus are very different from stock android, the phone/dial and messages apps are great. However sometimes I get some FCs in Camera app so sometimes I like to install the Leedroid Sense ROM as I also like he Sense UI. However in the last Leedroid ROMs the notifications area is too transparent so some notifications are hard to see (not sure if you can change that) so I get back to MIUI.
After reading this thread I'm now going to try the insertcoin ROM and maybe the CM7. The only thing with non sense roms is the phone/dial app, even apps like Go Contacts are not as fast and usefull as the one with sense or MIUI.
Of course there's no such thing as the best ROM, but for each person there are some ROMS that are better.
Cheers.
There is no best rom. It depends on personal preferences.

Ok so change the question a bit. Whats the fastest rom "Benchmark wise" the fastest i have found is oxygen 2.1.3 all others are slightly slower. Also another question i have is can you flash things from one gb rom to another like for example "Volume button music track skip?" from cm7 to gingervillian?

[Q] new to desire - whats the best rom?

hey guys,
i just bought a desire, moving from a htc hero. i am a bit confused with all the different roms available, so i would be very gratefull if someone could recommend a rom for me. i am looking for a rom with the following features:
1. as stable as the stock rom
2. has all the funcionallity of the stock roms (i noticed that for the hero some roms had problems with the camera for example, yet the camera is important to me, the same goes for gps)
3. is fast
4. has long battery life
5. sense is optional, i quite liked sense, especially the camera app and the dialer, yet i can live without it if i can find good replacements for the mentioned apps
6. gingerbread is optional - i am not quite sure how important the gingerbread improvements are and whether they come at the cost of speed and stability
thanks a lot in advance
imo the best rom was InsertCoin 1.0.5 with sense 2.1 and 3.0 parts..the new 1.0.8 with more stuff of 1.0.3 is beautiful but slowly respect the older 1.0.5
RcMixS v2.0 if you want GB with Sense 2.1 + 3.0.
Oxygen 2.1.4 / CM7 if you want pure (much faster than Sense) AOSP GB ROM.
MIUI if you want something completly different (iPhone like) with great battery life.
Also wrong forum section, this should go to Q&A...
HTC Desire --- Desire Android Development... does this look like a QnA section?

I hate to say this but given your criteria stick to stock, and don't bother reading this section, or making irrelevant posts in the DEV section
I can recomend GingerVillain (with dialer one as alternative to sene's dialer) or MIUI-XJ, both are without sense and super fast. Also have good batery life (ofc it depends on how u use your phone).
Fully customized GingerVillain - Super fast and lot of options.
Thanks

So what would be the problem with the non-stock roms?
Non apart from aosp not having sense, and some being a bit unstable, but most is very decent.
You need to decide if you want:
1. sense
2. aosp
3. miui
Try them out(just make a nandroid) and go between them till you find one you are comfortable with. Then choose a rom from either of the categories:
For sense roms, they are quite similar(all gb and sense 2.1+3.0 stuff). For aosp i personally prefer the clean oxygen, but some might consider the more configurable cm. For miui there are pretty much just the one choice

And if it is sense that your after, I would highly recommend the Insertcoin Sense 2.1+3.0 (3D) combination rom.. it feels advanced, very stable, everything works, the 3D animations are sensational (no pun intended Lol).
BTW, you might want to sort out your medical expenses as you'll soon become addicted to flashing like the rest of us!
If you are looking for stable and fast sense rom with good battery life then nothing can bit
RCMix S v2.0 Evolutionary Sense(2.1+3.0) by robocik imo.
i also tried leedroid,InsertCoin,CrystalKingdom,Cool Kingdom roms but not satisfied with performance, those who hasn't try it yet give it a shot, best sense rom i am using so far
Insertcoin Nightly is very nice, fast and reliable , and even if there's a problem it's fixed very fast as Baadnwz releases updates every 1-2 days
Has got to be MIUI-XJ for me . I tried , and liked RC Mix v2.0 but once i switched to miui -xj i found what i had been looking for.
Well basically its between sense and aosp. I dont need sense for its flashiness, advantages would be the camera and dialer apps.
On the hero I was using cyanogenmod, I was quite happy with it, with the only drawbacks that the cammera was more sluggish than on the stock-sense-rom and that the gps would crash the phone now and then.
So if there is an aosp rom that has the camera working well, I would go for that and if there was a sense-rom thats not super heavy on the cpu and the battery, that would be cool too...
Hi.
Absolutely satisfied with [ROM][Sense 2.1+3.0mix][02 June]RCMix S v2.0 Evolutionary Sense.

Ayax
LeeDroid 3.0.8.2 for me
I've used LeeDroid since before version 2.
No problems with the Froyo builds he's done - all features I need work correctly, including video capture, PPTP VPN, and no force close errors!
I'm currently trialling his GB stuff - version 3.0.8.2 is still a little buggy for me.
Search one from my sig, it's stable, fast and has good battery life
hope it helps

Which Rom?

Which rom would you say is the most stable and fasted for the htc desire?
there seems to be too much of a choice?
any specific ones?
It all comes down to personal preference in the end.
I always preferred the AuraxTSense ROMs from Neophyte but I do not like the newer Aurax ROMs so I have gone to Ginger Villain and find it to be just great.
I've tried every ROM except the MIUI ones and the Oxygen ROM. CM7 is quite good and more than enough people enjoy it's stability, but it is not for me I don't think. I like the way GV is a customised version of it.
I still prefer the old Sense ROMs but maybe it's because I just prefer the look of them. LeeDroid ROMs are incredibly stable and fast, so I suggest to start there. His LeeDroid 2.5.0 is a great build and if you feel like a Gingerbread experience, go for the GB version of LeeDroid instead.
I originally went with LeeDroid, so I feel it is a good start for others.
Hi, to narrow it down.
I would prefer a rom based on the original rom. But with mods so that it stands out, and it runs at the phones full ability?
thnks for your reply. much appreciated.
You mean ROM running on Froyo 2.2?
Then LeeDrOiD defintiely.

Best sense based rom is insert coin a2sd or cm7. both are stable, fast with sense 3.0. Go for it.

CM7 is a very fast and stable ROM.. its not Sense based but I think its very close to it. Use the s2e app to overcome the internal storage issues inevitable with Desires and you'll not only have a fast stable ROM but you'll also have a lot more space for apps
PS. this is the first ROM I flashed, for a newcomer its a very easy starter

LeeDroid
Oxygen

I can recommend the AcesMod007 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113070
It's quite new, but it's a very stable and good Hybrid ROM of Sense 2.1/3.0 and gets many Updates. Besides it's very fast and saves Battery quite a lot.
Using Leedroid from its begining now on 3.0.8.2 Data++. No problems at all.
BR
MIUI roms have useful feature and very customizable. u should try them.
You will go through several roms until you find one that you like (I have had my desire since launch so i went through loads )
As far as speed goes i would say go for rom without Sense, CM7 for example.
I used Leedroid for a long time and can not fault it.
However in the end I settled for this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988570
It does require a bit more fiddling than most roms, but as long as you read the guide/FAQ you should have no problems.
I have been running this rom for a couple of months and have had no problems at all.
I'm currently using CM7, but I really do miss aspects of Sense which I sacrificed in favour of improved battery life and speed. The browser on CM7 just isn't as pleasant to use, and I really do like and use various Sense widgets. I love the notification screen in CM7 with the wifi/BT/GPS options, but it just doesn't feel quite right to me. MIUI looks a bit much like an iOS for my tastes, though I may give it a shot at some point.
Currently trying to flash AceSRom007 and having my fair share of trials and tribulations with it. The actual look of the ROM is wonderful, but I may have to flash back to stock to try and get it to work.
on my desire I have installed sgbs rom...most reactive and stable
As was stated above, it comes down to personal preference mostly.
In terms of speed, I didn't notice big differences between the commonly used ROMs as a non-expert user.
I tried CM7, Oxygen, Insertcoin, Reflex, and now experimenting with MIUI, which fits me well for now
The best thing you can do, is try out a few of them for a few days, and choose that, which appeals the most to you.
You need to download and experiment. Oxygen is blazing fast AOSP rom, CM7 has more features and is slower than Oxygen, MIUI is the iPhone lookalike if you want anything like that, and there is this gargantuan selection of Sense roms which are slower but give you the Sense experience.
And when you say a "rom based on original rom", you mean with HTC Sense?
As AOSP you can try Oxygen and CM7. On the other hand if you want to stay in sense GUI try LeeDroid, sgbs and AceSmod007. I'm using the last of them and I'm very satisfied.

2) Whatever meets your performance/feature requirements.
Unless you specify what you are looking for in a ROM, its hard to narrow down. There are tons of these threads and the common answer is "try some".
Not trying to be a jerk, but it really comes down to what you want/like.

Best ICS ROM i have used till now - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492461 . Though this is also not fully functional.
I don't feel sense ROMs are fast enough :-/ But as biohazard said, it all depends on individual.
I've tried the ICS roms and I'm just not satisfied with them as a dailey driver yet. They'll get there, my biggest thing is the glitchy cameras. I'm excited for the time when ICS roms are 100% working.
I've tried just about all the roms out there, except sense 4.0. I keep finding myself going between CM7 and Virtuous Glite. I like the performance and customization of ILWT and I like the long battery of Glite.
I like that ILWT seems to be the only CM based rom that has a GPS fix.
I really like sense, but they're too laggy for me so far. Maybe, I just haven't found the right one?
The question of "what is the best/favorite ROM" gets asked a couple times a week. Just browse through this forum and you will find plenty of threads with opinions on ROMs.
As already mentioned, everyone has different needs and tastes. What is one person likes, may not be the best for you. Just do some reading, and you will find the benefits and features of the various ROMs, then pick one from there.
Just flashed this mod : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1495255
