Water damage - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently bought a droid incredible from my friend for 40 bucks. A few days ago he dropped it in the river. He said that when he took it out of the water and the screen worked but the touch screen did not. He then took the battery out to let it dry out. Today i got the phone from him. I am hoping to repair it and save money vs buying a working one online. Currently i cannot get the phone to take a charge. Im going to try a different battery tomorrow to see if its just the battery that is shot. Like i said im really hoping i can fix this myself and not have to take it to a repair shop. Does anyone have any ideas as to what parts i may need. Im assuming a new glass digitizer. But if anyone has gone down the same road please share advice. I did find one website that will fix it for 60 bucks but i'd rather not send it anywhere. If i missed any key imformation let me know. Thanks

You can pretty much rebuild the entire phone cheap using this website.. http://www.globaldirectparts.com/HTC-Droid-Incredible-Replacement-Repair-Parts-s/6283.htm

[Q] What would you do?

So, Yeah, I've just broken my DZ/G2. Screen's all messed up, and I can't see ****. I have rooted my phone and I'm really ready to kiss Bell's ass tomorrow morning.
What would you do to cover your ass if my situation were to happen to you?
I'd go to universalrepair....wait, can we plug sites? Well, my screen crapped out and I bought a new screen from an online store for about 49 bucks and now my phone works.
I never send things in for repair unless they give me a replacement unit on the spot. For a phone, i would rather order the screen online and fix it myself. If it was for something bigger, say a tv, then sure, warranty it. But for something as simple as a broken screen, its usually faster to diy it than ship it away for warranty. Just my 2 cents.

[Q] Temperature Warning when Booting

Hey, I found a thread on this in the SII threads to no resolution. My phone's battery has been flaky at best and when I try to reboot it I get a temperature gauge with a yellow arrow (and am not allowed to boot until I plug in the phone). Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to resolve this?
I've Reset Battery Stats and I've wiped and tried multiple roms to no avail.
I had a very similar problem. The other symptoms I had were that the phone was not recognized on computer because of the USB and the notification light wouldn't go off like it thought it was charging. By any chance do you have any of those symptoms?

If you have a sprint epic 4g touch you shouldnt be on the sII section I almost bricked my phone when I got confused about the models and tried to flash a rom from there. On to the battery issue it sounds to me like you might need a new battery or there might be something wrong with the phone. I had an issue similar to that where my phone would out of the blue say battery disconnected when I charged it. I took it to sprint and it turned out it was a bad charger that was shorting my phone out. Have you tried a different charger? Believe me they can cause problems that last long after you have disconnected them. I would try a different charger and if that doesnt work take it to sprint and they will test it out and if it needs a new battery they will give you one for free and if it is something with the phone they will replace it for 35 assuming you bought it from sprint. O ya also if you take it to sprint make sure you unroot it/ return it back to stock because when I took mine in that is the first thing they asked and when I gave it to them to look at it the first thing they did was go to about phone to see if I was running any custom roms or kernals or anything like that.
I agree with rbtrucking. Sounds like a hardware issue. what is the temp hanging at? if it's really overheating a temp program should tell you if it's really actually hot or if the sensor is just going nuts, especially considering you've already tried multiple roms. I'm new to Sprint (switched from T-Mobile) so I don't know how forgiving the insurance is about sending you a new battery, but with T-Mobile I had a similar issue and they sent me a new battery free of charge. I would start with the battery first and if that doesn't work, you may wanna consider flashing to stock and sending it back for a refurb.

Sprint is very good with customer service in my experience. Just go to a sprint store with a repair center and if you don't have insurance and the phone cannot be fixed they will give you a new one for only 35 dollars. Also they will give you a new battery free of charge if you need one. If they don't have one in the store they will mail it free of charge. I just dealt with them the other day and this is what they told me.

Good to know, T-Mobile wasn't so forgiving. They replaced my battery but tried to screw me on my insurance claiming the rates have been raised since the previous time I needed a replacement and tried to charge me $200 for a Motorola Defy that was selling new at the time for $350. What's the point of insurance if I can buy it on Ebay for cheaper ha.
Update:
So I took it into Sprint and after a night with the phone they weren't able to fix it and said there was corrosion damage on the charging port and he tried to scrape it off but it didn't fix it. He showed me the corrosion using a high-tech magnifying glass so I know he wasn't lying.
Anyway, because I didn't want to spend $100 to get insurance replacement, I got home, whipped out the rubbing alcohol, my girlfriend's hair pin, and some cotton swabs and went to town on it.... so far so good. Hopefully the corrosion doesn't come back but even if I have to do that from time to time I won't mind.

Battery swollen... Will Sprint replace it?

Today I noticed that the back of my Epic Touch is pushed out. Popped the cover and my battery is swollen. It wasn't like this yesterday. What drew my attention to it was the fact is was much hotter then normal. Also, it keeps resetting now too I've noticed a few times today.
I had noticed my phones battery life took a noise dive the past couple weeks but I figured it was something I had installed or done. I went from about 24~30 hours on Gingerbread to like...... 10~12 hours?
I've had my phone about a year, maybe a little less..? I assume it's not safe to keep using this battery but I really do NOT want to invest money into another one when I really want to find a way to get the GS III anyway. Problem is, I need a battery like today, I use my phone for work.
Take it to the sprint store. as long as it isn't water damaged they will swap it for you.

Fixed that for ya.
Since it is a year old, it is out of warranty. If it is not quite a year old, they can tell you to contact Samsung for a new battery or it will just be luck of the draw who you talk to and if they have any batteries laying around.
Brand new Samsung OEM battery, no questions asked. They never even asked my name.
I walked in, asked to speak with the tech about my battery, battery was already out of the phone and when the tech saw it he said, "you need a new battery don't you"!?
He didn't even bother with their "tests", he just went into the back and got one still in the plastic baggy and handed it to me.
Was much easier then I expected. Never even asked how long I'd had the phone.
nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never had them question me about a battery as long as it didn't have water damage. My stores must be different cause we talk about rooting and everything. When I was running AOKP the tech asked which build and everything. I like my Sprint store. It is a corporate one if it matters.

Figured I'd bring this back up in case anyone was having this problem again. Anyway, I recently noted my battery was swollen too and after reading this post I figured I'd try going to the sprint store and see what happens.
I walked in, one of the workers there saw me holding the battery and asked if i needed to have it checked. I said yes. He checked it, confirmed that it was swollen and told me that the machine that measures its electrical properties said the battery was bad. He proceeded to give me another battery that he said was better, and I left happy.
I don't think the battery he gave me was new, but it definitely performs better than my old one. I do happen to have a week left on my 1 year warranty, but it was my impression that the guy at the store didn't even check my records. Finally, this was a corporate store and it is one of the stores that is marked on sprint's website as capable of doing repairs.
Basically what I'm trying to say is, if you think you're battery's bad, go ahead and try to take it into the store. Worst case scenario you get nowhere, but if you're lucky you could end up leaving with a better battery without much hassle.
I went to three different corporate stores with my swollen battery, and got nada. One store tried hard to sell me an extend battery at full retail. I mentioned that my phone was less than a year old, and all said the warranty does not cover the battery, and I would need to contact Samsung.

I went to a corporate store that is listed as a repair center as well. They logged me in, and he could tell my battery was swollen before I even took the cover off the back of the phone. They gave me a battery from a demo phone as they didn't have any in store and they ordered a new battery that was delivered to my house a few days later. I do have TEP so I don't know if that makes a difference.
I just found out my battery was swollen and I decided to purchase an extended battery instead. I'd rather not have to deal with Sprint.
At just over a year I had a swollen battery...took it into a non-corporate store and they wanted 40 bucks for a new one. Made a 10 minute call to sprint and I've got a new one on the way. Even though I am out of warranty the TEP kicked in to cover it. Definitely worth the call if you've got the protection plan.
Ha I have the same problem. My phone started resetting its self every time I would try to use my 3g / wifi if I didn't turn data on it was fine. I checked the battery and it was swollen. Went to a sprint store and they said they were outta batteries and I could try buying one...damn them!!
spent 30 minutes at a sprint store in Philly- I got nothing! Im outside of the 1yr warranty and do have Insurance.
I ended up buying an Anker battery
I just picked up a new one from sprint last night after work they had ordered it on Monday. I didn't have TEP but I still had warranty and they wanted to charge me 35$ but luckily I went in with a friend who also has the same phone and she has insurance so what they did is placed the order under her phone even though it's actually for me and there was no charge at all so I was lucky she came along with me lol.

Does anyone have a picture of their "swollen" battery? I think mine might be ever so slightly starting to, but that could just be my eyes playing tricks on me. If anyone does, please share. Thanks in advance.

I don't have one but you can start noticing by taking your battery out and try to put it back in you'll notice when pushing the battery in its not going to be flat it will feel like there's something in between the battery and the phone also the back cover will start to be difficult to put on because of the thickness of the battery.

Water damage Gnex- India

So nearly a week ago, i was travelling by bike. It started raining ridiculously, i had kept my phone in a plastic bag in the pocket of my windcheater. Somehow, the water entered my phone, i travelled nearly 20 kms without realising the water had already done the damage to my phone.
I reached home and saw what had happened, immediately took out my battery, cleaned my phone with a dry cloth and used hair dryer for about 30 mins. I knew the damage had already been done, coz the phone flashed a red led light indicating water damage.
I opened up the phone, saw the water marker stickers were in a perfect condition no change in color whatsoever, kept my phone in rice for about 12 hours and next morning i plugged in battery to see if it works, no result. PHONE WAS DEAD.
I took it to local repair shop, gave me an estimate, the phone worked for a min and then bam display was flashing on and off. Decided to take it to samsung svc, at first they denied repairing it since GNEX isnt available officially in India. So, gave them my phone and today got an estimate. Costs almost 200$ to replace the mobo! I was shocked! Anyway, my question is should i get my phone repaired? Can i get the parts from outside and get it repaired(not in samsung svc, it took them 4 days just to tell me estimate!)
Any idea which place in mumbai is good for repairing cell phones?
Thanks!

Did you use hot air? because that might be what have killed it. Plastic and hot hair don't always mix well, just like electronics and water.
Thanks for the reply guys. Tried indraprasth, first they said it will cost Rs.2500, now they are saying will cost more than Rs.5-6k and still no guarantee if it will work! So went ahead and gave it in samsung. Estimate is around 8k! I used hair dryer in normal/mode for about 30 mins and then in hot mode for 5 mins. When i tried to start the phone, the phone just flashed red led notification light and since then never turned on!
I dont know how much time it will take, even i know spending 8k on repairs is not a good idea, but this is my second phone in a year so had no option to buy nexus 4! Well will wait for the next nexus till then.

Hi! Im also facing a similar situation. Water entered in my phone on 9th June, I tried to turn on the phone but it wont start. I removed the battery and kept my phone in a bag of rice for almost 10 days. charged my battery using an external charger but the phone wont turn on
I would like to know what exactly the repair guy told u in indraprasth and which service center did u give ur phone. I don't want my nexus to die. I stay in borivali and any info from ur side will be really helpful.

The guy at indraprasth told me that water had entered the phone internals. Including earpiece, motherboard and display. My mobo worked fine for a sec or two and then the phone wud switch off again. After many tries the phone was dead. Then he said he can repair the phone(p.s smartphones cannot be repaired if mobo is damaged, only replaced) but there's no guarantee it will work. Then i went to samsung, they gave me an estimate of 8k +-1k. I will also get a warranty for a month, strange since this phone wasnt launched in India.
All the best, i would suggest go to authorised svc first and if you think the price is too high, then go to local.

Thanks for your reply. I went to Indraprasth and the guy said my phone is 'dead'. It cannot be repaired and it has to be replaced but he said it's better u don't do anything as its gonna cost u heaven and plus spares are not easily available. So now i have no option left but to go to an authorized service center. I would like to know what exactly the service center guy told you that's not working and needs a replacement and have u received your phone back from the center and is it working properly? I have sent u a direct message pls do check it and revert back when free. Thanks.

Sent ZF2 for RMA, came back and its WORSE

Hey there, this is my second post on here. I'm amazed that it's my second time having bad experiences with the Zenfone 2 when I see everyone so happy with it. Ok, here I go.
A month ago, my (one month old) phone died, you can check the issue and answers here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/help/zenfone-2-charging-dead-t3149072
I asked for a replacement and was denied, sent the phone for RMA instead (spent around $90 to send it and another $10 to get it back, cause I live in South America and had to pay for any costs sorrounding mailing).
I was pretty frustrated already, because I had chosen to spend $200 for a phone for the first time in my life and I ended up spending $300. I expected it to return at least in better shape than how I sent it. When it got back, it had a deep scratch on the case cover that barely missed the camera lens by a milimeter (apparently someone used an xacto knife to cut the foam wrap open and did it so well it even cut through the phone, real classy RMA service indeed).
I emailed Asus about the problem and wrote a review on Amazon posting the before/after pictures and whatnot. Asus replied they'd send me a new case cover at no cost, which I was really satisfied with. The phone worked fine for 10 days.
Yesterday when I woke up and turned off the phone's alarm clock, it went dead and then it started turning on and off repeatedly on its own. I got scared so when it turned on finally, I turned it off and left it like that the whole morning cause I had to go to work. At 12:30 in the afternoon I decided maybe it was a good time to check on it and when I grabbed it I realized it was really, REALLY hot, like 'about to burst into flames' hot. I freaked out and pried the case cover open and took out the sim and memory card, left the phone on the floor so that it would cool down. An hour later it was still hot. Two hours later it cooled down but it kept turning on and off on its own.
I only use Asus accesories and I've never dropped the phone, I've never rooted it nor customized it in any way (haven't even had time to do much with it, actually) so what's happened just eludes me. I'm really mad about this and I want to ask you what I should do.
I sent an email to Asus asking for a refund, but even IF they do agree to that I'll have to send the phone back, and by the time this is over I'll have spent the price of two Zenfone 2 in, like, 3 months.
I don't even have money left to buy another phone, I'm not sure what I should do and want to ask if anyone here has experienced similar issues or knows how to solve this.
Is ASUS Customer Service and RMA always like this? Is it because I live very far away and can't sue the reason they might not be taking my case seriously?
Sorry if it's too long or rant-ish, I'm just over my head with this phone x_x
thanks!
Hello there,
Yes I had the same turning on and off problem so I sent it for repair through RMA.
You can check my post I made on Zentalk here : http://www.asus.com/zentalk/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=26940
I experienced the same issue when experimenting with smart lock. Turning on smart voice and smart location sent my phone into a series of reboots . Once I turned them of things returned to normal.
Sent from my ASUS_Z00AD using Tapatalk
Smart lock wasn't on, as far as I know (nor smart voice or smart location).
I sent my complaint to ASUS last week, it's been five days now and it should've been answered within 48hs. I'm fuming now. Phone still doesn't work.

Dear Blasterkat101,
In regards to the power issue, is the phone charging showing any LED indicator light when power is connected?
Have you tried a different USB cable?
Please visually inspect USB cable and connector port on the phone to see if there is any obstruction or damage.
Have you tried connecting to a PC to see if it can be recognized?
Sincerely,
Frank

ZF2
I feel your pain. I purchase my ZF2 in July, it failed in September with the cover sensor constantly thinking I was opening and closing the phone. I paid $25 for the advanced RMA, then sent me a replacement phone that was well used and stained.
The stained phone worked good for about a week, then the power button failed. I paid the $25 for another advanced RMA, they sent me a brand new phone (looked new in box) and this one was also a dud. Would not power on at all, and wouldn't respond to being connected to the charger.
Now I have to RMA this 3rd phone, wait for it to be processed (can't have 2 RMA's at the same time) and try to open a new standard RMA after Thanksgiving.
In the mean time, I'm using my Nokia 1520 with Windows 10 (another converstation)
I know that ASUS is not a top tier provider, but this has been an unbelievable process.
Had one do that
I love my zenfone 2 so much that when my son needed a new phone I got him one. His did the same thing after 2 days. After fussing with it for 20 minutes I was able to get it into the factory recovery. A factory reset later and his phone was fine.
I had purchased 2 ZenFone 2, 1 for me and my wife on 5/11/2015.
Well my wife's Zen2 wouldn't turn on and it had a full charge 3 days ago.
I've tired a hard reset connected to a different usb cable and also charger, messed with it for 2 days and NADA it was DEAD......
She doesn't use the phone much maybe 1 gb of data for the month and under 100 mins and she hates to text..
But I did get the extended warranty from Newegg for $25 per phone and they will email you a gift card for the same price of what I paid for the phone.
As soon as the Tracking info hit UPS the gift card came in my email within 36 hours and I ordered her The ZenFone 2 Laser which should be here Tomorrow hopefully she will be happy with it.
Zenfone2
My support experience with ASUS has been truly awful. Has anyone else seen this happen? It's almost like ASUS knows the phone is a dud, and they're just going through the motions.
