Hey guys,
So I got my G2 in January after upgrading from an N1. However, I sat on it the other day while it was in my pocket and now it doesn't work . When I turned it on I saw gray and white bars and now the phone is just black even though it's on. There's a cracked slash on the lower left of the phone but the crack is not physical. The screen is perfectly fine and theres no damaged glass so I think the problem is what lies beneath the screen. Everything works fine because I can still draw my lock pattern and since I memorized where my apps are on my home screen I tested a few apps out and everything is good, it's just that the screen is pitch black and I can't see anything.
So what do you guys advise I do? I have some important stuff saved on my Notes app and also some important texts with certain information on them. I don't want to pay 450$ or even 200$ to get a new one.
Since it hasn't been a year I'd assume the phone is still on warranty but I'm not sure if that covers physical damage ( I think it doesn't). I also pay that Asurion insurance every month, will that cover it?
I still want the same phone though so what about third-party places? Would they be able to fix it?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
Well since you have insurance it will cost you $100 to get a replacement. About getting your data backed up if its not on your SDcard (some apps save their data on there) then I don't think there is much you can do.

However if you have Titanium Backup and know the location you can somehow try and batch (backup) the app + data. Then you would be able to copy the Titanium backup folder from your sdcard and restore it on the next phone. It wont restore your text messages though.

Your other alternative is to replace your screen.

If you think you can do that, its worth a try.
Note: This WILL void your warrenty if you go this path...

Sorry, I know it's not the right forum really.
But I want software AND parts, but they are both part of the same problem so I thought here was a good bet.
If the mods want to move, please do, edit if needed.....
I dropped my phone, big whoops.
The touch part is fine, and the LCD is fine, but the glass infront of the LCD has 6 big cracks.
It works fine, no crystal leaks or dead zones.
BUT, if the glass moves and cracks the lcd film I'm stuffed.
I've repleaced the screen in an Ipod, which was easy and cost me £10
I've searched for a replacement, but could only find a bulk deistributor.
Anyone done this?
or recomend a cheap supplier in the UK?
The second part is.
I do have insurance on the phone, but I've spent ages getting it setup just the way I like it.
I'd rather fix it TBH.
BUT, if I have to send it back / get a new one.
Is there a really good and reliable bit of software than will take all my settings / apps / prefferences / files and put them exactly the same on a new phone.
I realy don't want to spend 3 days, flashing the rom and installing apps.
Thanks for any help.

For the screen repair/replacements, there's several threads about that subject and where to get parts, over in the Accessories Forum.
For the backup, the two best apps for doing a full system restore on your phone are SPB Backup, and Sprite Backup. Both are paid 3rd-party apps, widely used by many here at xda, and both have the ability to backup to a completely new device. Sprite has a 10-day trial version, details here
EDIT: I just remembered I had a copy of a step-by-step teardown guide for the Rhodium, I've attached it now below...might be helpful in your screen replacement process.
If you do have to send your device back and get another one, the easiest way I know of to get it back to the way you like it is to use Sprite Backup.
It came free with my HTC Touch several years ago
If your afraid of damaging the screen any more, use MyMobiler (google it)
to control your phone via activesync/windowsmobiledevicecentre
Install Sprite backup and make a backup of your phone, then copy the backup to your pc.
When you get a replacement phone, flash the ROM you were using onto it and then copy the you made with Sprite Backup back to the device and run it.
and hey presto, phone is restored
(ive attached a cab of sprite backup for you)
Thanks for the links.
I think I've got a copy of sprite that came with my MDA compact3
And in typical style, 1/2 an hour after my post I found a screen on ebay....
Thanks for the build/dis-assemble instructions.
I'll give it a go, and if I stuff it up I'll drive over it with my car.......
Any interest in a log of the repair?
once a gain guys, you've helped me out loads.

im ready to sell my evo, and already started a new account with a new carrier. i canceled my sprint service but they aren't disconnecting it until the end of the month. im not going to use the evo anymore except to power it on and show it to people.
can i sell it before the last week of my service ends? i assume i want to do a factory reset, but then can i wipe my phone number from it or take any other security precautions? what else would you do before selling on craigslist/eBay? might unroot it unless it would get me a lot more money rooted. thanks.

First, if your new phone is set up go ahead and wipe it. You can not sell it until you have a phone on the line to replace it.(some one correct me if I am wrong)
Don't think you will get extra money for it so best to just unroot it so who ever buys it doesn't use that as a excuse to not be able to activate it. Is your esn clean? If not you need to let that be known. Also you can continue to use it by connecting it to WiFi and use internet phone even when its not on a network.
Don't ever try to explain a rooted phone because if they don't already know about it they will just cause problem in the future!!
Sad to see ya go but hopefully you get it sold soon before those new phones start showing up!

When I was debating weather or not to sell my Dinc, I thought I was hosed since it was rooted. You may want to check out swappa. They will buy your rooted phone. I did a full factory reset on my phone, erased all contacts...etc. Then ended up selling the phone to my brother-in-law....but I have heard good things about that site. Just something to consider.

I'm not planning on keeping my number or anything, just want to sell it. I assume if I wipe and unroot it, and someone buys it and tries to activate it they will see my account has been scheduled to cancel at the end of the month? or should i wait til the end of the month to sell it? *confused*

I would sell it rooted. You can offer to unroot it.

if you're serious about buying it we might be able to work something out but let me tell you about it first. it is a replacement Sprint sent me and so it is refurbished, it has the original battery i got with my launch day evo, the battery cover has some scratches and tiny piece out of it by the little slot you use to take the cover off, from repeated removal of sdcard, battery, etc. and the letters H T and C are gone because one was coming off so i just peeled them all off. it still says HTC just looks like black depressions for the letters. i don't have the factory ac adaptor. i can't find the little end piece plug part anywhere so i have a 750mA replacement i ordered cheap on amazon. the screen is starting to show the "separation" issue, where if you push down on the bottom left part of the screen by the home key or just above it, you can feel it give slightly, although i haven't had any touchscreen issues as far as functionality. there is the typical hairline crack on the edge by the power button and its also happened on the left side of the edge in the middle. i think the screen is scratch free, i can take a really close look if you want. i can throw in a Sprint factory car charger if you want it and i think i have the original box. i have never missed a payment or anything so the ESN is clean. i can flash it with whatever rom you want or unroot it. ill include a 16gb sdcard but i think its only class 2, Kingston brand. there are some cosmetic issues, but if you can get the edge piece replaced and screen fixed at a Sprint store (this is a repair they do, but its up to you to put it on insurance and make sure you're covered before you take it in) and buy a new stock battery cover online (i would guess about $10), you'd have a pretty clean phone. let me know if you're interested and what you'd like to offer. im not looking to get rich off this because i know it has cosmetic problems, but you could get it taken care of pretty easily and cheaply with insurance. im just done with Sprint so i don't want to mess with going into the store. let me know soon because im gonna unroot it and put it on craigslist soon if you don't want it. thanks.

You may want to consider replacing the SD card. Data may be retrievable even after you wipe. As for selling the phone, not sure what price you are asking, but you might want to see what you can get if you sell parts separately. Some folks may be interested in buying the SD card (wiped/overwritten 3 times to minimize chances of data retrieval), battery, back case, camera, etc.
yeah good point. i did wipe the sdcard using diskwipe, a supposedly secure utility that will write all zeros or random data and multiple passes.

Dropped my At&t S3 at work today and the screen went black... can sometimes see a few lock screen images, but it is unresponsive to touch. I'm rooted, running CM10 and believe I have usb debugging allowed on the the phone. Is there anyway for me to locate and view the SMS's that have been sent to me through my computer? Sorry if this has been covered before, I just spent the last hour searching, but was unable to find anything. Also, does what I described on my screen sound like it will need just a glass replacement, or digitizer, and LCD? Thanks for all your help.
You can get the sms database from /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases

Thanks for your help, but I was unable to find the files this way. When I access my phone through windows explorer, I open internal storage, then data and the only file I can see is a titanium backup file. Am I going about searching my phone the wrong way?
On a brighter note, I did just find a program called myphoneexplorer which gave me quick access to everything I needed, so problem solved. Now I just need to figure out how I'm going to fix my phone.

This is definitely more than just the lens (glass), everything would still work if the lens were the only problem. Although unlikely since you say sometimes you see the lock it screen it could be just a loose cable(s). The reason i say this is if it were just a bad connection you would probably get flickers more often that just the lock screen. More likely it sounds like the LED panel is blown. I feel your pain, i actually just dropped mine today and broke my lens...argh. Depending on your skill level with electronics you could attempt to disassemble the phone and check the connections. If it comes back to life and you just need to replace the lens, they range from 10 to 30 bucks. You can pick up a lens/led assembly for around 200 bucks online, or Samsung does it for 175.

That's because the data folder you accessed is actually /sdcard/data. You will have to use adb pull to get it off.

Just took it apart and tried re-securing most of the connections, but still no luck. I think I'm going to ship it off to Samsung, as that seems like the best price. Fortunately I have an old 3gs iphone that I left unlocked just in case to get me by in the mean time, unfortunately I'm back to using ios. As much as I hate apple, I have to say I dropped my 3gs hundreds if not thousands of times over the 3 years I used it, and only broke the glass once which cost less than $10 to repair. I've had this S3 for 3 weeks dropped it once and now I'm looking at close to $200 to repair it... kind of lame. That being said, now that I've gone android I could never go back.

It just really depends on where and how it lands, i've dropped all of my smartphones, some that i expected they were destroyed, you know on asphalt with pieces flying off in different directions, and managed to get a way with just a few scratches. This time my GS3 dropped no more than 36 inches onto a carpeted floor but manged to catch a sharp corner just on the edge of the screen and that was all she wrote. One of the biggest disadvantages to larger screens on our devices is more chance of the screen being damaged in a fall.
Two questions
Just dropped my GNex and the battery fell out. Put it back in and turned it on. Everything works.... except the screen. I can hear when I get a text but that's about it. Suggestions?
Secondly, nothing software about this phone is remotely stock. Unlocked bootloader, CM10 etc. If I can't fix the screen will Verizon still replace it? (I have insurance)
Thanks

I think you don't need the screen to flash the stock images.

Maby the screen connector got knocked out of its socket in the crash. IF you're handy you could try to find a dissasembly guide and reconnect it, on your own responsability of course. If there is no external damage and you are completely stock i would turn it in for warrenty.
Edit, oops.. Just read the last part about it beeing flashed and modded

I hate to say this, but if you want your data, the toolkit have a nandroid function, allows you to make and save a nandroid to your PC, then you can flash stock and lock bootloader using fastboot..
Well I went to Verizon and in order to get a new phone I would have to drop umlimited data... not going to happen. My contract is up soooo bye bye Verizon, hello Sprint.
If you buy a unsubsidized phone (pay full price) you will not lose unlimited data.

I'm aware. But I'm not willing to pay full price and the EVO 4G looks promising.
Have you tried "Android screencast", a plug in for Android sdk. We used this on the double rainbow gingerbread for the sgs vibrant.
Screencast let's you see what"should"be on your phone, but on your PC. You can even use your mouse for navigation.

My nexus shut down and wont turn on,all i get is a blinking led . LG said they will repair it for free ,but i don't feel to comfortable sending it to them as it is with all my personnel info on it, and if i remember correctly google playstore has my credit card on file and whatever else i have on the phone, has anyone here sent it for repair without wiping their phone .
Trust
I've sent it in a couple times.
In my case the data was wiped beacouse of motherboard replacement.
But I had many other cases in which my data was intact back from the factory. Of course if you sent it to the manufacture they repair it in house
(not like apple who sents it to ****ty 3rd parties) and their policies like in every other place is to not touch your data (huge legal issue if they did). Overall even if they don't touch your data you got to make sure are covered like:
encrypting it by setting a security method in your device.
Making a security copy of your device and wiping it.
Best regards.
Thx for the advice
