im ready to sell my evo, and already started a new account with a new carrier. i canceled my sprint service but they aren't disconnecting it until the end of the month. im not going to use the evo anymore except to power it on and show it to people.
can i sell it before the last week of my service ends? i assume i want to do a factory reset, but then can i wipe my phone number from it or take any other security precautions? what else would you do before selling on craigslist/eBay? might unroot it unless it would get me a lot more money rooted. thanks.

First, if your new phone is set up go ahead and wipe it. You can not sell it until you have a phone on the line to replace it.(some one correct me if I am wrong)
Don't think you will get extra money for it so best to just unroot it so who ever buys it doesn't use that as a excuse to not be able to activate it. Is your esn clean? If not you need to let that be known. Also you can continue to use it by connecting it to WiFi and use internet phone even when its not on a network.
Don't ever try to explain a rooted phone because if they don't already know about it they will just cause problem in the future!!
Sad to see ya go but hopefully you get it sold soon before those new phones start showing up!

When I was debating weather or not to sell my Dinc, I thought I was hosed since it was rooted. You may want to check out swappa. They will buy your rooted phone. I did a full factory reset on my phone, erased all contacts...etc. Then ended up selling the phone to my brother-in-law....but I have heard good things about that site. Just something to consider.

if you're serious about buying it we might be able to work something out but let me tell you about it first. it is a replacement Sprint sent me and so it is refurbished, it has the original battery i got with my launch day evo, the battery cover has some scratches and tiny piece out of it by the little slot you use to take the cover off, from repeated removal of sdcard, battery, etc. and the letters H T and C are gone because one was coming off so i just peeled them all off. it still says HTC just looks like black depressions for the letters. i don't have the factory ac adaptor. i can't find the little end piece plug part anywhere so i have a 750mA replacement i ordered cheap on amazon. the screen is starting to show the "separation" issue, where if you push down on the bottom left part of the screen by the home key or just above it, you can feel it give slightly, although i haven't had any touchscreen issues as far as functionality. there is the typical hairline crack on the edge by the power button and its also happened on the left side of the edge in the middle. i think the screen is scratch free, i can take a really close look if you want. i can throw in a Sprint factory car charger if you want it and i think i have the original box. i have never missed a payment or anything so the ESN is clean. i can flash it with whatever rom you want or unroot it. ill include a 16gb sdcard but i think its only class 2, Kingston brand. there are some cosmetic issues, but if you can get the edge piece replaced and screen fixed at a Sprint store (this is a repair they do, but its up to you to put it on insurance and make sure you're covered before you take it in) and buy a new stock battery cover online (i would guess about $10), you'd have a pretty clean phone. let me know if you're interested and what you'd like to offer. im not looking to get rich off this because i know it has cosmetic problems, but you could get it taken care of pretty easily and cheaply with insurance. im just done with Sprint so i don't want to mess with going into the store. let me know soon because im gonna unroot it and put it on craigslist soon if you don't want it. thanks.

You may want to consider replacing the SD card. Data may be retrievable even after you wipe. As for selling the phone, not sure what price you are asking, but you might want to see what you can get if you sell parts separately. Some folks may be interested in buying the SD card (wiped/overwritten 3 times to minimize chances of data retrieval), battery, back case, camera, etc.
yeah good point. i did wipe the sdcard using diskwipe, a supposedly secure utility that will write all zeros or random data and multiple passes.

So, I'm going go to Sprint to pay the 35 dollars to get my screen fixed. Would it be a big deal if they see that the phone has Cyanogen on it? Bought the phone from Radio Shack so it's not like they would tell them about it. xP
It probably depends on the store, but I took mine in the other day for a screwed up screen, and they fixed it. I know they rebooted it, because it was off when I gave it to them and on when I picked it up. So I know they saw the CyanogenMod boot screen. I'm sure other things may have tipped them off, too, but they didn't give me any trouble about it and let me sign up for their protection plan anyway.
Give it a shot. It's not like they're going to hold your phone ransom.
P.S. I did take my SD card out before I gave it to them.
As always, I recommend you unroot. We all know that rooting doesnt cause hardware malfunctions, or has nothing to do with your scratched screen. But it does void the warranty, and there is always the possibility they will catch it. I wouldnt take the chance.

Well if they do care, and they do catch it, they will permanently void your warranty, so every sprint store will see it and you will never get your phone fixed.
Maybe hold on to your battery while they fix it?
Or just take the steps to do a nandroid backup, then unroot it.
I never bother unrooting before having my phone serviced, I just do a nandroid backup and then install the RUU ROM version. Unless they boot into recovery, they can't tell and it's so much easier to restore when I get it back.
The guys at my sprint store are always fascinated with my phones when I bring them in. I had my Evo rooted before I even activated it, put CM 6.1 on it, tried to activate it but it wouldn't so I took it to the sprint store and they couldent figure it out. Brought it back home, flashed stock RUU and activated just fine, took it back and let the guys play around with CM 6.1 and they were asking how to root theirs.
I guess it just depends on the store

Don't worry, you're rooted EVO will be just fine.. Now, if it were an iPhone and you were going to the * I have Mr job's hot dog up my azz* 'Genius Bar' .. that'd be a different story..
I Called and asked if they cared that my phone was rooted and they didn't. Doesn't sound like your going in under a warranty item your paying them to fix it. They generally only care about rooted if your having software issues. Like I said call the store DON'T give them your name talk to the tech and ask him what their policy is on rooted phones. it would seem to me your paying them to fix the screen it shouldn't matter if its rooted or not. Call them and ask it wont hurt.
If you have TEP on your phone does it still cost $35 to have your screen replaced. I have a tiny scratch on mine and I'm not sure it's worth $35 but if its free I might do it.

Nope with TEP it is free. Had my cracked camera lens fixed yesterday and they new it was rooted. Free with TEP. To be totally safe just nandroid and unroot.
Sorry for the N00B question but how would I nandroid and unroot?
Any cosmetic damage will not be covered under TEP for free you will have to pay the $35 to get the screen fixed. so if the screen just has a scratch they wont replace it for free they will make you pay the $35 fee
If you are going in for a scratched screen, I doubt they would care. Just nandroid backup and flash the stock RUU. However, for software issues, the stores and refurb people are soon to be asked to check in recovery for S-OFF and void your warranty.
Half those guys in the store probably have a rooted phone themselves.
The Sprint store I go to, 2 of the guys have rooted evos and another has a rooted samsung galaxy s. Maybe go in there beforehand and talk to some of them. They dont even care about rooting necessarily; its not like it screws the sales guys or anything.

My store, one rooted Evo, and one rooted Intercept. Here we don't care about it too much.... unless the customer is a straight up ass.
Store I use to work at, rooted Evo, rooted Epic, rooted Hero, but they don't do S&R there.
Does anyone know if Best Buy cares if you're rooted and such? The people at their store were all on XDA and such, but I never bothered to check when my phone was fixed. A friend of mine has said they don't give a damn.

A factory reset doesn't remove the custom ROM, just data and apps. Better to be safe and Odin to stock than having an issue later. The replacement will come before they see it though.

I know my phone does not have anything to do with this section (thunderbolt) but I had just turned my phone in for repair rooted. after talking with the best buy rep, he claimed that the repair center will flash the unit to a fresh start supposedly with software that customers have never seen. he was rooted as well and i asked him if they did it through bootloader or recovery or whatever else but he stated that they have a program that flashes the unit with the display of the unit being in a "black screen" state, one of which I've never heard of through flashing/rooting various android devices.
I've also asked him about returns that have come back not repaired due to root and was assured that the black tie protection is a service repair and not an insurance repair and that's why they do not replace lost or stolen phones. in the likely event that my phone gets "junked" due to them being unable to repair the phone, they will credit me $750.00 to purchase the new phone. I did not get the rapid exchange because my phone is too new and they do not have refurbished units to send me, so they will repair my actual phone.
In hopes... I hope my phone gets junked and that I get a brand new phone. anything that gets replaced by this service is not new unless they credit you the money and you buy it brand new from the store.
I just turned the phone in yesterday but if you get curious as to what the outcome is, i may have an answer in a few days or a few weeks, depending on they claim my phone to be. i say this because I'm not usually on a epic 4g forum but found this when i was going to post about black tie and thought it may be helpful as i can never find a direct answer to black tie on anything except for the horror stories.
They are supposed to give you a brand new Epic, not a refurb.

Ok so im having the loose usb port problem with my phone and im going to be sending it in for warranty exchange. One thing is i rooted my phone and the S-off shows up if you look. Also i never installed custom roms or anything so it looks like a normal evo if you flip through the menus and stuff. Superuser is also gone and no root apps or anything is on the phone just that it shows s-off if you look. So will sprint look for the s-off when i ship it back to them a charge me or anything?? im also running the OTA 2.3.3

Different stores have different standards for root. My store here in knoxville told me, of course after I've unrooted sadly enough, that they do not check for s on. They only look to see if you have a custom Rom. And especially if it is a hardware, the rep told me they don't normally care either way. If it is software related, they will not work on a device running a custom Rom.

I'm curious as to why you are sending it? Going to the store is easier. And also, if they don't fix rooted devices, all they can do is tell you no and send you away.
But personally I don't think they will check. Especially because your issue seems to be a major hardware issue.

I also have had bad experiences at Sprint stores. They all seem to treat you like you're dumb, but soemtimes you get lucky and get to speak with a nice respectful rep.
Here is what I would say/do.
First, do you have insurance? That is very important.
If you do, try this. But proceed with caution.
Take your micro usb cord and really jam up your slot. Like, really bend the attachment piece out of place.
Go in and tell the rep that your device does not charge properly and really needs repair or replaced. Ask nicely. I'm sure those peeps deal with jerks all day long. Prolly why they dish back out to some of us nice folks.
Show the repair tech the damage.
If you have insurance they will be more than happy to help you.
If you don't have insurance please please please do not take this route!!!

Oh.......
Here is the deal. I've asked several different sprint reps about this over the phone as well as in the store.
Once you purhase your Evo, sprint gives you a 30 day warranty. Within 30 days, you are eligible to return phone, trade phones, or replace phone with a brand new one if there are manufacture defects.
After 30 days, your Sprint purchase warranty ends. But HTC also has a warranty. It is a one year limited warranty. It is mainly for defects and other various issues. Basically, you send your phone ($6 shipping handling) to HTC and they diagnose it. If it is manufacture defect, they either repair or send you a refurbished device without charge. If they decide it is user error or you damaged phone, they call or email you to inform you that you have two options. A. pay full price for repair and shipping back home. B. Pay 35$ fee to get phone back unrepaired.
The deal is this. Sprint offers you the service and guarantees you service and only the service. Your device was not made by sprint but by HTC, and being so, issues must be dealt with through HTC...unless you purchase insurance.
This is my advice to you. Call sprint. Ask them about insurance. It is $7 a month. Ask them how soon it takes affect after you purchase it. Usually is immediate. Then, in the next week or so, go to sprint store. Now you have insurance and they will deal with you and repair your phone right there and then. And if you want, later after your device is fixed, you cancel insurance.

Long story short, I flashed a boatloader for the european version of the phone and my phone is bricked.
I want to know how to short circuit my phone without making it look intentional. I am not insured but I do have warrenty, if I short circuit the phone, will they be able to fix it in the sprint store? I am really hoping they don't. I just want a new phone. I was told that I was have to pay a $35 fee to get the phone fixed, what do you guys think? BEst way to short circuit this phone? (Not with water please)
UPDATE:
So my cuz and I went to the sprint store and his friend saw the phone and the first thing he asked if it was rooted, I said yeah. He couldn't fix it, but said he will take care of it when exchanging it and since I didn't have insurance, I had to pay the $35 warranty exchange. Furthermore, I added the insurance with the exhange, I am picking up the exchanged phone tomorrow because it had to be ordered.
Thanks a lot guys for the help.
This is why im glad i have insurance if i brick it its at the bottom of a lake. What warranty. As he said even download mode warns you of the possible warranty voiding. Least expensive option now is probably repair.
Besides the things I'd like to say about this situation, I'll say something else. It won't go into download mode? You could try getting a USB jig and see if that will force it into download mode. I'm holding back the temptation to say something really smartass. This was a very expensive lesson, huh? Sending it in to unbrick it, if all else fails, is your last resort. With a $500 phone, you can't afford NOT to get insurance for it?! Even if you had insurance, you wouldn't get a brand new phone.
I'm not trying to be a ****, so don't take it that way.
im referring to the 1 year warrenty that comes with the phone, it protections against defections in the phone. If I short circuit it, it will be defected... no more useless comments please, don't remind me of what I already know; I know that I should have gotten the insurance, enough said about that.
Would really appreciate it if someone could actually answer my question

If you fry the usb port theyll blame it on you using an aftermarket charger since your stock one is fine. You probably wont be lucky enough to even keep them from checking the rom status. You have a phone capable of being repaired by samsung soon you may have nothing.
The warranty covering defects was voided by a custom rom. The reason they wont honor it after rooting or custom rom is things such as overclocking. Many things can be done via software that would normally be replaced as defective.
If you cant make it so they never find out then all warrantys are null and void period. Truth and fact.

Seems like there are more people complaining about all theses cooked ROMS and how they either work perfectly...or suck some way or another or have tons of glichs.
#2 --- Always, and I mean Always get $8 insurance on a Smartphone, in the long run this will save your ass...big time...
#3 --- People look at the 2 year contact price of the phone...not the really price of the phone (which is $549 I believe) and thats what gets them in trouble...ahhh my phones only $200 or less, I dont need insurance...yet if you break your phone you have a POS brick weight...that will now cost you over $500 to replace...or you could pay $8 a month and if something goes wrong, The Sprint Repair Center will fix it free...or replace it with a refurb unit....Even if you make a claim due to water damage or something, its still cheaper than the $500+ dollars you will have to fork out...

I dare you to bring it to my store. Nothing gets passed a well trained tech. Your best bet is to go to an advanced exchange only store, the reps are not trained like the techs. Pay the 35 and call it a day. As for the microwave comment, solder points get a white residue on them after being microwaved, to a trained tech it looks like corrosion.

Sorry, not to be n [email protected]@hole here, because what happened to you really sucks, but if you screwed up your phone by doing something dangerous without doing proper research (ie: try to flash something designed for the European Galaxy S2 onto an Epic touch), why should Sprint eat the cost and give you a replacement phone? I mean you are basically asking for a way to cheat Sprint.
Something to consider. I really do feel for you and hope somehow someone comes up with a fix.
the best easy to do what ur asking and not get caught would be to take a fully charged 18v battery from a drill, 2 wires either stripped on both end or to make it easier put alligator crimps.on each end and hook the battery to the terminals on back of phone where battery usually touches and then hit the power button on your phone. it will leave no trace and even if it does get powered up its well enough outside the read parameters to where nobody can catch it. ive seen this done already to atleast 7 or 8 phones. have fun

Yes you can but it would look suspicious if the phone needed work shortly after the insurance kicked in.
So I have a phone that windows does not Recognize.
see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458176
I just did a factory reset BUT there is still the BULLET that Show up during the BOOT from Juggernaut V4.1.
I am pretty sure that I can get Tmobile to replaced the phone under warranty (already starting to jump through their hoop and dealing with techs not smarter than my 8 year old).
Everyone here knows that it is not a ROM issue but something that is screwed up on a deep hardware level.
If I send the phone back (after they send me a replacement). What are the chances that they will charge my account full price for for the replacement phone if they check it out and find that it has remnants of a custom rom on it?
OPTION 2.
I just got a text today and they have open enrollment on the Super duper protection plan. I called immediately and added the protection plan to my phone. Heck it is only $7.99 per month. Anyone know what the copay would be for complete replacement say I "accidentally" drove off with the phone on my car roof
I guess I am debating sending back a phone with remnants of a root ($5 for shipping and processing) taking my chances I don't get a charge back vs sucking it up and just going through the warranty program.
Any input is appreciated.
TIA
Hmm, you're talking about this plan right?

Also, they'll check and make sure you had the insurance added within 14 days of owning the handset. All claims will be denied if this isn't the case, and you'll just waste the $8 per month.
Edit - I haven't worked with tmobile for a couple years now...but I'm reading the terms and conditions a bit now and it seems totally the same as it was.
The chances that they'll charge you full price for the phone under a false warranty are EXTREMELY HIGH. I saw it on a load of peoples bills and they freaked every time. Trust me!! Don't try to get a free warranty exchange unless the phone looks exactly like it should. The tech support people inspect the phones like mad when they get them back at the warehouses.
$130 deductible.

Boot into reovery and flash another rom
Oh sorry just read not a rom issues sorry
Yeah I know that it usually has to be purchased within 14 days but they have a special open enrollment right now so I was able to add it. I also found that the copay information.
Your deductible is $130
Your bundle price is $7.99
Your insurance price is $4.79
Your warranty price is $3.99*
Your mobile security price is $3.99
Note: There is a $5.00 service warranty processing fee.
Either way you look at it the phone goes for $450-$500 all day long on ebay so $135 is not a terrible deal.
If that stupid bullet logo was not there I would be set. When I did factory reset it took off Clockwork recovery and without ODIN (ie my computer cant recognize the phone) there is no way to put it back on.
Thanks for your thoughts. I really don't see how they could deny the Protection plan claim but do feel that they could deny the warranty claim.
BLAH I just want a phone that works 100% normal.
Thanks for the info about the phone inspection process. The phone looks pristine but it would be hard to miss that custom boot unless you closed your eyes for 6 seconds while the phone boots.
I am leaning toward the Premium Handset Protection even if it is refurbished it should work better than the one I have.
I am not back on the stock rom and it SUCKS compared to Jag 4.1 - I got spoiled. lol

You try to connect the phone in another computer? If not try that, because I help a friend of mine to flash with Odin. His phone was doing exactly the same as yours, and after changing ports on 2 different computers "BINGO" one of the computers recognized the phone with the Odin program and We were able to go back to stock kernel. Finaly he did a phone replacement for free with T-Mobile. Well he paid $5.00 fee.

Sounds like a windows driver issue to me

Yeah I have no luck on 5 different computers. Tried all ports on all computers and still no luck. The crazy part is that they all used to work. I have installed and reinstalled all samsung drivers with no luck. Thanks for the suggestion but I am sad to say I already tried it with nothing to show for my efforts.
Why don't you download the cwm flashable zips of the stock rom and kernel?

Run it over with your car. Tell tmobile you put it on top and forgot about it. Then pay $130 and get a new working phone.
Other then that idk whats ur problem again? Bootloop?

Just flssh stock kernel through Odin. Thats it. If you cant find it reroot and flash stock kernel through cwm or flasv a stock ROM. Then Odin to stock and issue fixed. No unecessry payments.

Ummm yeah that the problem. Unless you know of a wifi ODIN I am screwed. Windows does NOT recognize my phone. ODIN does NOT recognize my phone. Nothing works regarding any type of USB connection at all.
Thanks for trying to help.

ohh okay, sorry, I didn't realize that was what you meant by factory reset. As in you put it back to stock etc. Because factory reset is also erasing data and not the recovery.
Not sure if Uve destroyed it yet and being as I own an epic 4g touch I'm not too sure of root options but have u had a look at the mobile Odin by chain fire in the market? Might b right up your alley.
Here is what I did to get a new phone. First, add the 7.99 insurance plan on it, then wait a few days to file an insurance claim saying you lost your phone, but before making the claim, take your Sim card out of your existing and put it somewhere. That's a very important step!!!! If you were using that Sim card at the time you make the claim, they would deny it!!! Don't report the old phone stolen, say it was lost do you can try to fix it backup phone, if you report it broken, u have to send it back, if you report out stolen, out well be blacklisted. Hope that helps!!!

Why can't you use Odin????????
sent from the nuke in my pocket...
If you read the original thread you would see where he had water damage and now windows won't recognize his phone anymore thus can't use Odin he is saying.

Where is the water damage indicator?
I had a VERY similar problem
Paid the 130$ to replace under insurance coverage after I got frustrated with the thing and 'missplaced' it.
Wonder what the market is like for a damaged handset...
