What Would You Do - Semi Bricked Phone? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So I have a phone that windows does not Recognize.
see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458176
I just did a factory reset BUT there is still the BULLET that Show up during the BOOT from Juggernaut V4.1.
I am pretty sure that I can get Tmobile to replaced the phone under warranty (already starting to jump through their hoop and dealing with techs not smarter than my 8 year old).
Everyone here knows that it is not a ROM issue but something that is screwed up on a deep hardware level.
If I send the phone back (after they send me a replacement). What are the chances that they will charge my account full price for for the replacement phone if they check it out and find that it has remnants of a custom rom on it?
OPTION 2.
I just got a text today and they have open enrollment on the Super duper protection plan. I called immediately and added the protection plan to my phone. Heck it is only $7.99 per month. Anyone know what the copay would be for complete replacement say I "accidentally" drove off with the phone on my car roof
I guess I am debating sending back a phone with remnants of a root ($5 for shipping and processing) taking my chances I don't get a charge back vs sucking it up and just going through the warranty program.
Any input is appreciated.
TIA

Hmm, you're talking about this plan right?

Read the fine print. That insurance still goes through Asurion. You may have to pay up to a $250 deductible to get a replacement REFURBISHED device.
Also, they'll check and make sure you had the insurance added within 14 days of owning the handset. All claims will be denied if this isn't the case, and you'll just waste the $8 per month.
Edit - I haven't worked with tmobile for a couple years now...but I'm reading the terms and conditions a bit now and it seems totally the same as it was.
The chances that they'll charge you full price for the phone under a false warranty are EXTREMELY HIGH. I saw it on a load of peoples bills and they freaked every time. Trust me!! Don't try to get a free warranty exchange unless the phone looks exactly like it should. The tech support people inspect the phones like mad when they get them back at the warehouses.

$130 deductible.

Boot into reovery and flash another rom
Oh sorry just read not a rom issues sorry

Yeah I know that it usually has to be purchased within 14 days but they have a special open enrollment right now so I was able to add it. I also found that the copay information.
Your deductible is $130
Your bundle price is $7.99
Your insurance price is $4.79
Your warranty price is $3.99*
Your mobile security price is $3.99
Note: There is a $5.00 service warranty processing fee.
Either way you look at it the phone goes for $450-$500 all day long on ebay so $135 is not a terrible deal.
If that stupid bullet logo was not there I would be set. When I did factory reset it took off Clockwork recovery and without ODIN (ie my computer cant recognize the phone) there is no way to put it back on.
Thanks for your thoughts. I really don't see how they could deny the Protection plan claim but do feel that they could deny the warranty claim.
BLAH I just want a phone that works 100% normal.
Thanks for the info about the phone inspection process. The phone looks pristine but it would be hard to miss that custom boot unless you closed your eyes for 6 seconds while the phone boots.
I am leaning toward the Premium Handset Protection even if it is refurbished it should work better than the one I have.
I am not back on the stock rom and it SUCKS compared to Jag 4.1 - I got spoiled. lol

You try to connect the phone in another computer? If not try that, because I help a friend of mine to flash with Odin. His phone was doing exactly the same as yours, and after changing ports on 2 different computers "BINGO" one of the computers recognized the phone with the Odin program and We were able to go back to stock kernel. Finaly he did a phone replacement for free with T-Mobile. Well he paid $5.00 fee.

Sounds like a windows driver issue to me
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

Yeah I have no luck on 5 different computers. Tried all ports on all computers and still no luck. The crazy part is that they all used to work. I have installed and reinstalled all samsung drivers with no luck. Thanks for the suggestion but I am sad to say I already tried it with nothing to show for my efforts.

Why don't you download the cwm flashable zips of the stock rom and kernel?

Run it over with your car. Tell tmobile you put it on top and forgot about it. Then pay $130 and get a new working phone.
Other then that idk whats ur problem again? Bootloop?

Just flssh stock kernel through Odin. Thats it. If you cant find it reroot and flash stock kernel through cwm or flasv a stock ROM. Then Odin to stock and issue fixed. No unecessry payments.

Ummm yeah that the problem. Unless you know of a wifi ODIN I am screwed. Windows does NOT recognize my phone. ODIN does NOT recognize my phone. Nothing works regarding any type of USB connection at all.

ohh okay, sorry, I didn't realize that was what you meant by factory reset. As in you put it back to stock etc. Because factory reset is also erasing data and not the recovery.

Not sure if Uve destroyed it yet and being as I own an epic 4g touch I'm not too sure of root options but have u had a look at the mobile Odin by chain fire in the market? Might b right up your alley.

Here is what I did to get a new phone. First, add the 7.99 insurance plan on it, then wait a few days to file an insurance claim saying you lost your phone, but before making the claim, take your Sim card out of your existing and put it somewhere. That's a very important step!!!! If you were using that Sim card at the time you make the claim, they would deny it!!! Don't report the old phone stolen, say it was lost do you can try to fix it backup phone, if you report it broken, u have to send it back, if you report out stolen, out well be blacklisted. Hope that helps!!!

[Q] Should I Keep My Insurance?

Hey guys.
I've been thinking if I should even keep my insurance on my EVO. If my screen breaks, it's $35 (without insurance). If it doesn't, I just spend $84 on nothing every year. I'm rooted BTW.
Can someone help me make up my mind seeing how I can't do it myself? Hahaha. Seriously, can someone who knows the insurance policy help me out?
If you plan to flash other roms, kernels, mods, etcetera, keep your insurance.

I would keep it. Yeah, it's $84 a year, but I've used mine twice so far. While the issues I had probably could've been covered under warranty, I saved a lot of Excedrin by having insurance. One of the phones had a software problem on the stock not rooted rom, which I'm sure would've been a pain to get replaced without insurance.

This is my 3rd Evo. The first 2, my screen went out. Sprint replaced them because it was within 30 days. I flashed CM7, have a nandroid of the stock rom, I know how to unroot and haven't had any problems with this one. I don't know. I feel like I'm trying to convince myself because I'm cheap, but you guys do make a point. Does anyone know how much it costs if my USB goes out (without insurance)? I'm probably going to keep it, but out of curiosity.

Worst comes to worst and you do run into a situation its better to have it than not. I'd say keep it, if you lose or someone steals your phone atleast you won't have to come out of pocket with so much.
Insurance on ANY smartphone is a MUST these days. Too many things can go wrong and it's better to be safe than sorry

BTW, the $35 for screen repair I was talking about wasn't about Sprint (I don't know how much their prices are). I was talking about a cell phone repair shop in my area. Those guys told me they would do it for $35 (this includes labor).

Ok so im having the loose usb port problem with my phone and im going to be sending it in for warranty exchange. One thing is i rooted my phone and the S-off shows up if you look. Superuser is also gone and no root apps or anything is on the phone just that it shows s-off if you look. So will sprint look for the s-off when i ship it back to them a charge me or anything?? im also running the OTA 2.3.3

Different stores have different standards for root. My store here in knoxville told me, of course after I've unrooted sadly enough, that they do not check for s on. They only look to see if you have a custom Rom. And especially if it is a hardware, the rep told me they don't normally care either way. If it is software related, they will not work on a device running a custom Rom.

I'm curious as to why you are sending it? Going to the store is easier. And also, if they don't fix rooted devices, all they can do is tell you no and send you away.
But personally I don't think they will check. Especially because your issue seems to be a major hardware issue.

I also have had bad experiences at Sprint stores. They all seem to treat you like you're dumb, but soemtimes you get lucky and get to speak with a nice respectful rep.
Here is what I would say/do.
First, do you have insurance? That is very important.
If you do, try this. But proceed with caution.
Take your micro usb cord and really jam up your slot. Like, really bend the attachment piece out of place.
Go in and tell the rep that your device does not charge properly and really needs repair or replaced. Ask nicely. I'm sure those peeps deal with jerks all day long. Prolly why they dish back out to some of us nice folks.
Show the repair tech the damage.
If you have insurance they will be more than happy to help you.
If you don't have insurance please please please do not take this route!!!

Oh.......
Here is the deal. I've asked several different sprint reps about this over the phone as well as in the store.
Once you purhase your Evo, sprint gives you a 30 day warranty. Within 30 days, you are eligible to return phone, trade phones, or replace phone with a brand new one if there are manufacture defects.
After 30 days, your Sprint purchase warranty ends. But HTC also has a warranty. It is a one year limited warranty. It is mainly for defects and other various issues. Basically, you send your phone ($6 shipping handling) to HTC and they diagnose it. If it is manufacture defect, they either repair or send you a refurbished device without charge. If they decide it is user error or you damaged phone, they call or email you to inform you that you have two options. A. pay full price for repair and shipping back home. B. Pay 35$ fee to get phone back unrepaired.
The deal is this. Sprint offers you the service and guarantees you service and only the service. Your device was not made by sprint but by HTC, and being so, issues must be dealt with through HTC...unless you purchase insurance.
This is my advice to you. Call sprint. Ask them about insurance. It is $7 a month. Ask them how soon it takes affect after you purchase it. Usually is immediate. Then, in the next week or so, go to sprint store. Now you have insurance and they will deal with you and repair your phone right there and then. And if you want, later after your device is fixed, you cancel insurance.

[Q] Warranty Replacement of Brick Due to Rooting etc.

I bricked my T989 by trying to flash a ROM for the I9100 (I somehow failed to notice that the ROM was not for T989). After unsuccessfully trying to revive it I requested a warranty replacement from TMO. Does anyone have any perspective on the likelihood that TMO will hit me with a big fee if/when Samsung notices that the phone was previously rooted? Does Samsung look for that or do they just reimage the device without poking around?
I replaced a rooted g1 with no problem. They do hit you with a $130 deductible though.

You're confusing warranty with insurance. The deductible only applies to insurance, for which there is no concern regarding rooting damage. Insurance will cover any damage or loss. Warranty is specifically for when the manufacturer has issued a faulty device. In the OP's case, negligent damage should not be covered by warranty, since the manufacturer is not at fault, however they will most likely not even look twice at the device and just replace it. I have seen countless folks brick their phones and just play dumb for a replacement. This, in part, is why they now charge a $20 warranty exchange fee.

I wouldn't waste my warranty exchange on a soft brick as its 100% fixable. the refurb unit u may receive will only hhave a 90 day warranty vs the 1yr that comes with ur origina purchase.

Don't know much as to the why's and what not's, all I know is they charge it unless you have full insurance in which case they only charge $5. Most likely to offset the cost of people abusing the system by ruining their own devices and then getting a replacement.

So is my phone hard bricked?

Basically, here is what happened.
Was flashing a new ROM with CWM, and I was using the new CWM touch (which I though was cool at the time). When I flash my ROMs, I usually have it on a SD card ready to go, format everything (ext, system, interal_sd, dalvik cache, battery stats, etc) but when I flipped my phone over to pop in the MicroSD card, my index finger hit the reset button. Oops...I thought no big deal at that moment, until I realized that my phone wouldn't do anything now.
So yeah, when I hit the power button the blue LED comes on, but screen stays black. Have to pull the battery to get it to go off. So I went to radio shack, bought some 100k resistors and made a jig...didn't work. When I pop it in, it just gives me the blue LED immediately, but that's it. I thought my jig was bad, so I bought one from usbjig.com, which does the same thing as the one I made. Either the one I made was bad as well as the one I bought, or my phone is beyond fixing? I am infuriated with CWM Touch, which I thought was great...but it's the reason I'm in this predicament. Any hope of fixing, or should I just activate my old Plam Pre until I can get a new phone?
Hope you bought insurance.
CWM touch destroys our phones. There are only a dozen or so threads telling people to stay away from it.

Hey OP, its not looking good my friend... I am a little confused though, why was your SD card out while flashing? Is that how you had been flashing ROMs: take card out, wipe, then insert card and flash ROM? As all of that is unecessary, when you wipe the phone it does not wipe the ext sd card as well. Second, does your computer recognize the phone at all, when you plug into the USB do you hear a "ding"? My guess is that a trip to the Sprint store is in your near future. Ultimately, not a huge mistake just $35 out of pocket if you dont have insurance.
you bricked it. warranty, insurance, or sell. i lost $200 due to a bricked device and no warranty.

Replaced via insurance claim, with a $100 deductible? or in store, for free?
blue light froze on me and screen stayed black. The tech thought it was an LCD issue so she replaced the screen with a white galaxy's screen. Gave a nice black/white look but the phone was bricked. Sprint replaced it for free. However if I didn't have TEP they said I had to pay $35. don't worry, you won't need to pay $100

Phone replacement you have a few options. Just as you took time to write your long story about what happened to you hopefully you will use that time in the future to research thing before you do them. To seen if you can bring your phone back I suggest you read the How I bricked my phone thread. It has alot of info

So I spoke with someone at the Sprint store, and they basically said that if it required a replacement, I would be getting a refurb and it would be Wed at the earliest before they would have one for me. Instead of going in and dealing with them, I'm just going to do an insurance claim.
per #13 use the mobile tech videos web site. i have several friends that have used them for this very issue and works like a charm.
MobileTechVideos was able to resurrect my epic 4g too! I give them two thumbs up!
i had the BLOD( blue light of death) and nothing will fix it! no jig and no JTAG
I had a problem with my USB port not recognizing mtp/Mass strorage. They replaced it for free with a refurb. No problems since. As for touch recovery, tried it once while on gb. Nearly bricked my device back then. And no ICS was available at the time. Thank goodness. Used sfhubs one click about 7 times before it finally booted . Just my opinion, and i apologize to any devs working on a touch recovery, but touch recovery is the devil to the E4GT. I won't ever use it. I do have a few versions on the pc for Library reference, but will i ever use it..even the new one, you are playing with fire. Ya won't ever find that recovery on my phone. I hope this is a lesson learned. Take it to sprint, use your insurance (that's what its for) and chalk it up to experience.

Hold volume down and power and home
Does it do anything? If so, get Odin and flash a stock tar for jellybean.
******WARNING: THIS WILL WIPE EVERYTHING ON PHONE (not external sdcard, the PHONE).*******

This ^
Also, if you did it through the app, I've heard a lot of reports lately of people bootlooping after updating their recovery.
So if you can get it recognized in ODIN, flash a recovery through that and then see if you can get into it
I think i did the same. i was installing liquidsmooth for the S3 and went to reboot it and bam! bricked. i realized i did not do a wipe i just did an install on top of the rom. I have since then tried all button combos but no luck. I have installed odin and seems like when i plug in the phone to the computer and hold VOL UP+home+power my PC recognizes it but i dont think odin does. So I plan on going and buying one off craigslist and activating it in the morning if i cant do anything by then.

Then it sounds to me like you have yourself a fancy paperweight. Where did you find the ROM you were flashing when it occurred?

They fix a hard brick

FYI if you had a hard brick call Samsung and tell them it just stopped working and they will send you a box pre paid to send your phone in and a refurbished phone for your replacement. I end up getting a new phone as a replacement as I bricked mine a few weeks after the phone can out. I did this three times and the last time got a refurbished one. You don't pay nothing and the phone come in about a week the only thing that stuck is you have to setup your phone all over again. There really nice on the phone and didn't ask me about flashing or rooting my phone they just tried to have me trouble shoot the phone which I couldn't. Oh one thing our phone I's covered for one year manufacture warranty that has nothing to do with the carrier.

Shouldn't be doing this when you hard brick your phone, that's for actual phone defects and your dumb mistake doesn't fall into that category... :banghead:

This is called fraud. It's not a manufacturer defect that you screwed up. It's a you defect  people like you are the reason prices keep going up instead of going down.

Please do not encourage other members to commit fraud.

Whether or not they do replace it is irrelevant. When you decided to root your phone, you voided any and all claims on your warranty (which covers manufacturers defects only). If all of the people who hard-brick their phones claim it on the sprint warranty, you'll see a drastic increase in one (or all) of the following:
Phone Costs
Plan pricing
TEP Costs
"Premium Data" charges
By "claiming ignorance," you are willfully misrepresenting your situation to Sprint, with the intent to deceive Sprint so that they may pay for your mistake. This, by definition, is fraud. Now, you probably won't be sitting in front of a Grand Jury because of one (or three) replaced phones, but it honestly speaks volumes to your moral character if you see no problem with this.
What you're doing is passing the buck on your mistake off to Sprint. Sprint, in turn, will pass that cost onto us. Please don't recommend this course of action again.
