First good news about WinMo after a while. I do hope that Windows Phone Classic (if the rumor is true) will be interesting for HTC and other manufacturers, because all I really need is 1 GHz+ device with big screen, hardware keyboard and of course WinMo 6.5. And about that Starter edition, I'm really not interested.
Edit - in case someone didn't noticed it, my comment is about this article: http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/17/windows-mobile-6-5-to-be-redubbed-windows-phone-classic/.
im hoping that the'll eventually update the "classic" with photon
who is more confused now? us or MS?
The thread's title "wp7s starter will me stripped down 6.5" doesn't make any sense. There's no WP7 starter...
Exactly. They say "Windows Phone Starter", not "Windows Phone 7 Series Starter". So it's 7, Classic and Starter.

No, it won't.
This makes no sense unless there's going to be some kind of compatibility between 6.5 apps and 7 apps.
So far, what we've heard is there's no compatibility, so I can't understand why Microsoft would sell 2 incompatible products designed for the same purpose.

They don't have a same purpose - WP7 is for kids and gamers.
WP Classic would be targeted (if the rumor is true) to power users and enterprise market.

Wrong. 6.x will be targeted for the low-spec cheap devices until decent hardware becomes available in lower price segments. It will also go to "emerging markets" (whatever that means) in a stripped down cheap version to fill the same niche where possible. And finally, it'll be left to live for a while to accomodate needs of enterprises who have whatever WM-based IT solutions deployed to give them time to redesign and redeploy new ones. MS Business Division head specifically mentioned in a recent interview that they have invested more than ever into WP7S, so they obviously count on it in their market as well. It would be ridiculous to bet on 6.x in medium term as it's losing market share in the enterprise segment as well.
What can you say about this rumor?
i think its true since google confirms it..
lol, looks like they are scared.
Oh come on. Let's be reasonable here. One dude at Google making a quote does not confirm anything. It's irresponsible to expect that he has any more information on the matter than we do.
The idea seems reasonable, but it also seems crazy for Nokia to go from being in total control of the entire platform to only having control over hardware, with Microsoft being so strict about software customization. I think it benefits Microsoft more than Nokia to do this unless Microsoft is paying Nokia to do it, which also seems crazy.
well i guess its true..
simple reason:
they have to make a choise:
1. android (linux)
2. iOS (guess not possible, osx)
3. WP7 (windows)
4. make new one
now which one does look the most like its still modern in 5 years without complete UI redesign. windows phone 7
now with all the power in cellphones
they are clearly mobile pc's
you need a major development team to keep the customers satisfied.
see windows has 80% of global traffic, you can see the power of microsoft there. im sure windows phone will be the most used mobile phone os in lets say 4-8 years.
zune is awesome, once you know it you will never want itunes again.
and sorry i went offtopic, but nokia does make the right choise if they get wp7 on their mobiles. look at our mobile phones as "window" into the digital world. microsoft just does that. in and out and back to life

I think that Nokia is doing this because in final step the will come back to MeeGo.
MeeGo is a big chance for Nokia, BMW or Asus want to cooperate with Nokia because of MeeGo.

I'm not sure what you're talking about here with the 80% traffic.
mmm, what is going to suddenly drive the TENS OF MILLIONS of iphone users to wp7 ?
android is growing, rim is dying, and wp7 has yet to show -any- official numbers. please correct me here, and provide a source.
nokia can make awesome hardware, why should they limit themselves to one user base ? nokia wants to sell as many devices as vpossible, beit symbian, android, wp7, wm6.5, or anything. they don't care so long as it sells.
for once microsoft has to prove and win customers, instead of being able to force hardware suppliers to install their os.
If Nokia decides to come on board, at least that would mean good things for lots of the markets where WP7 is crippled. I doubt Nokia would hop on a platform that lacks half of its functionality in their major markets.
maybe they can make it multi-task

80% traffic, of the world, of all computers in the world.
even if its forced. its the force. windows is home os#1 by choise.
check this engadget traffic report
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/02/ios-now-accounts-for-2-of-global-web-browsing-traffic-chrome-r/
well this is based on data by http://www.netmarketshare.com dont know how they get their infos...
now who is driving iphone users to wp7..
good point, but its simple again, apple will do themself
its simple math .. iphone 1 was 1000€ on release day
that was around 4 years ago. since then every year a new iphone arrived.
apple will keep this up. but now, 4 years later your iphone wont receive any more updates, you cant use the software from appstore and you are forced to buy a new phone. you think twice if you spend a fortune on that again.
this is when wp7 kicks in. its not big now, but it will be in 2 years. people dont know it yet, but everyone i showed my phone loved it. people who used iphone for some years get tiered of iOS. and people are never satisfied, they always want something new.
another point is, there is only 1 (one) iphone .. but already now plenty of wp7 devices. now people trust in nokia for quality phones. they trust in mircosoft for quality software. im not saying they will only produce wp7 devices, but would be stupid if they wouldnt do even 1.
android, well, yeah its awesome, but not for average people. people who love smartphones in general all got a droid, but what about the people still rocking sony erricson feature phones, people with not much general interrest in computers or phones.
and i dont think wp7 has to proove anymore...
if you take a look at the wishlist:

What do you think IOS wont change? Do you think it will just stay the same? What about any of the other competitors? Will they not grow?
People said they loved Zune years ago, has it overtaken anything?
Nice assumption, but its just that, and nothing realistic about it.
I would not mind nokia hw and wp7 software at all. It could be the best of both worlds plus nokia has been inching toward winmo for a while
let's be real they have and nokia has market presence that can improve microsoft awareness internationally. It's actually a good idea if executed right
this will be great! with Nokia's reach in a ton of countries, this could potenially spread WP7 around the globe and not just on select countries

Nokia build quality and engineering combined with WP7(+) software could be something really awesome. Symbian has been useless and outdated for ages, last above-average thing to come out from Nokia was E51 and that was back in 2007...
Actually, all these sources only speak about some "partnership". It doesn't necessarily mean Nokia phones running WP7.

Yeah but let's be honest here, the only thing Nokia has to offer is it's hardware - it's platform is all but irrelevant at this point. So unless Microsoft has been working on a WP7 deal, it has been wasting valuable time it should have been using to roll out a new update .

Nokia's content store will be intergrated of WP7 appstore. But my question is when? Also does this mean all of Nokia's app will transfer to WP7?
news bits: http://wmpoweruser.com/news-bits-from-microsoft-nokia-press-conference/
from what i gather (only my understanding, not direct word from MS/Nokia), they will be running the phones with windows phone 7. so once this happens, then those phones will be based on the windows phone market place. this will not open up the app market to current phones on the market (symbian driven).
Nokia has an app store up and running I'm 32 different counties. They've already gone through all the nuances and differences necessary to get a successful international international marketplace up and running.
When Nokia has their WP7 phones ready, WP7 devs will suddenly have access to the whole world for selling apps.
According to what I just read, Windows Marketplace will supercede Nokia's
I was just reading that this is more than just a OEM alliance. Nokia will be, in effect, the priority hardware R&D/partner for WP7. Nokia and MS will work together on hardware innovation to the WP7 platform. Hopefully this will mean we'll finally get some cool WP7 devices that compete hardware-wise with the top devices out there.
I think this is a smart and necessary move by MS. And I'm glad they did it so soon in the life-cycle of WP7 instead of waiting for it to almost die.

I know this very well. Because next year, WP7 is going to compete not with iOS 5, but with iOS 6. And with Ice Cream Sandwich. So MS should think straight and have some cards hidden in the sleeves, because Tango may be fine, but they need Apollo since this year, and Mango since LAST year.

Mango is already out there. And to be honest, I dont think it was a mistaken leak. I think Microsoft intentionally leaked it. Anyone can install, like Apple jailbreak. You can just go ahead and read some tutorials. It's no hard.
Right now, I have mango, in Portuguese, running perfectly smooth. I don't need to use third party apps to Facebook, MSN, Twitter, LinkedIn. And most importand than have their own apps, it's integrated with the system and working better than any iOS/Android app would do.
It doesnt have customizations indeed, but who cares? Thread message is sexy, notifications are pretty nice, though it have some flaws. The keyboard is LOT better than Android's, even if its not swype. Tiles simply rocks, fast app switch could be better, but its better than Android too.
The user experience is a lot better overall.

I count all of these features and they are still less than 100. It is still far from 500.
Most of the features are ones we do not see. Bug fixes, API updates, developer hooks and plug-ins, tons of stuff that we cannot physically touch or play with. That is until a developer takes advantage of the new features.
Once Mango comes out, you'll see much better apps on the platform, ones that are able to take advantage of many of 500 new features that Windows Phone Mango brings.
And that haters continue to hate for the sake of hating. that's politics. Your statement contains absolutely no content. You can easily replace MS with any other competitor and WP7 or Mango with any other OS.
what important functions?
what expectations?
many people? what does that mean? there are many people who don't like Android or iOS
if you want to make a statement then you need to use some facts. If you can't do that then you need to research. Otherwise I have to say that your post is off topic. Look at other posts in this thread in which the posters actually contributed something to the topic and the original post.
Found it interesting that Microsoft just released an Xbox Live app for iOS users that does almost the exact same thing that our Xbox hub does. Is it me or did Microsoft just take away one of the coolest reasons to own a WP7?
Yes I know that you can't earn Xbox achievements on the iOS app, but one of the main things I loved about having the hub on my phone was to see who was online to play, something that made all my Iphone friends jealous.
Would love to hear feedback!
http://microsoft-news.com/microsoft-releases-xbox-live-app-for-ios-users/
Yes i feel the same way, I think Microsoft lost points on this one but i guess it was bound to happen. +1 for iOS
So what are the remaining reasons to buy a WP7? Office, and thats rumoured to be coming to ios. So then with a deficit in apps, mindshare, marketshare, what would be the reason to buy a WP7 device?
What a stupid, stupid, move and when WP7 dies, no one at MS should cry. (Probably all still be on their iphones, anyway).
The integration between Windows Phone and Xbox Live isn't good enough be that much of a selling point at the moment. The parts that are, games that add achievements and what not, aren't available on iOS.
You guys are complaining about something that offers the functionality that the xbox live website offers, who cares? You that mad that somebody can edit an Avatar? Read their Xbox Live Messages?

Microsoft being a software company I wouldn't be surprised to see them do that. That's where the customers are.
I think it's damaging to Windows Phone perception wise, iOS has already the best games and now they have an Xbox Live app. Even if the games are not Live enabled, that's not good for perception.

No it wont, just gives them one more reason to stick with their platform. Xbox Live may not have been a reason to switch to WP7, but being on ios definitely makes it easier for those users to stay on their platform.
Plus Xbox Live users are already exposed to metro through their console so that argument doesn't hold up.

And what would have happened if Blackberry made an official BBM app for Apple years ago? Or if Apple had released Siri for Android too? The only difference is WP7 is too new to lose exclusive features, minor or major. 3rd party apps don't count.
uh, this has never been a exclusive feature. As stated apps have been available for years, get over it. Office, Zune are exclusive.
Software company wants more people to use it's software. Wow, who would've known.
Who didn't see this coming. Ignorance is bliss, I see.
Microsoft released WLM for iOS and made WP7 users wait a year for it while demanding developers like IM+ rip out the WLM functionality months before many users even got Mango.
They also released OneNote, which is literally the only part of Office Mobile that is better than iWorks and third party Android Office Alternatives like DTG, ThinkFree, and QuickOffice.
Then the Bing app with Vision and all that other stuff, and even updates it for other platforms when we have to wait for complete firmware updates to go from MS to OEM to Carrier to us for an update on that stuff.
Still waiting on PhotoSynth for WP7... It's on iOS, though...
Really... Why the suprised looks?
Microsoft is internally fragmented. The different devisions don't work together as well as those in Google and Apple. Google would never release a Maps app on par with the Android version for another platform, but Microsoft has no issues releasing OneNote Mobile, WLM, PhotoSynth, and ridiculously good Bing apps for other platforms. They have pretty much always done this.
The Windows Phone Team does not control what the XBox, Windows Live, and Office Teams do; and the management at Microsoft does not force them to give priority support to their own platforms, either, from the looks of it (looking back years even to Windows Mobile days).
www.xbox.com does the same thing, who cares.
And you can control your xbox with the controller. Who cares about that app?
Right?

Google releases great apps for non-Android devices and they're praised for supporting other companies and are making an attempt to take over the world through superior support and innovation.
Microsoft does it and they're the worst company in the world abandoning their operating system and are heavily fragmented.
Our app still does much more than the iOS app. Would a thread in this tone be created in the Android section if Google released a full-featured Google+ app for Windows Phone? Probably not.
