I am on my second replacement device from Tmo for my G2, and it is also messed up.
Come to find that my phones have been bricking due to an aftermarket battery, hence the exchanges. I have tossed that battery and use my original shipping battery. the first replacement the screen flickered a lot when the screen faded before turning off, the hinge was better than my new one prior, but still a tad off. this one i just got has a missing pixel, and the hinge seems a tad misaligned as well, more than the other one...it taps a bit when typing on the screen instead of hardware keyboard, which my original new one did soon after purchase but not as bad as the original one.
anyone else having issues with refurbs like this? what have you done with tmo to get the situation rectified?
That's why I don't bother sending my phones in. They give you someone elses old defect
sent from my HTC Desire Z
i agree, but i cant afford 500 bucks for a new device right now.
tmo offered me a sidekick 4g with android, a mt4g black, or a HD7 as a replacement if i didnt want another G2 refurb. for ****s and giggles i asked about the G2x they were out of stock. I really need the hardware keyboard
Sidekick 4G isn't bad... same size only downside for me is
NO FLASH for camera. But other than that its decent. I think G2 is best qwerty android smart phone.

lower quality camera and no flash is the number 2 and 3 reasons why i dont want it because i use the phone for business sometimes and need a decent camera and need to send pix on the spot, reason number one it screams teenager lol

I guess there has been a grand shift in how good sidekicks are? They were generally known to be total junk.

Supposedly yes but its still inferior to the g2 overall except maybe the processor.

I checked out the g2x today at the store, its nice and I may consider it, but I read a lot about the issues it has and makes me wonder if its worth it yet or not. Even the store reps are saying they are just swapping them no questions asked.

Well tmo for now won't budge off of the mt4g or the hd7 as my options over another g2, so ill be getting another phone shipped to me. Let's see how this one ends up doing.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
just keep sending the phone back until your satisfied thats what i did . took about 5 times till i get the right one. make sure its made in thailand too cause the one from china got some yellow tint on the screen .

I agree, but its irritating to have to keep doing it. Just remember you have to keep doing it within the first 30 days of the exchange so you don't have to pay for express or any shipping again. Eventually ill end up getting a better alternative as tmo will have to realize the cost of these exchanges would exceed the costs of a brand new phone.

#3, the one that is in my posession still, with missing pixels in the screen
#4, would not boot at all
#5, keyboard did not type when certain buttons were pressed, such as ASDKLCV etc....
#6, ready to be sent back, does not read SD cards, and the hinge is so severely loose it feels like its going to fall apart. it actully looks like its loose from inside of the phone.
seriously HTC, you suck at repairs. what in the hell is with this malarkey???

... Wow. I never had any such issues with my replacements from T-Mobile. 1st replacement I had to get was because of the keyboard was stuck on the alt key, my second one was because the camera. ( Must of broke it because of rooting.) Aha but that's all

You need to meet the seller in a Sprint store to make sure the ESN is clear it it won't work on sprint.
Thank you, how about things to look for when I'm physically inspecting the hardware?

Just make sure all the keys on the keyboard click when you press them and the keyboard slides in and out while staying in place after sliding.

Been trying to sell my BNIB Epic and interestingly enough, not a single person asked if the ESN was clear. I was however asker where I "stay at" as if Google doesn't have any data on Chicago suburbs. Make sure you can activate the phone or do it alongside the seller, otherwise you're just stimulating he economy!
2 things to keep in mind:
1> Make sure the ESN is clear (This has been mentioned)
2> Check out the glass. I got my Epic off of Ebay, and the glass had been replaced, and it wasn't with gorilla glass. It scratched up quite a bit. Luckily, my phone got bricked (I have NO idea how THAT happened ) and Sprint replaced it for $35 with a refurb that had the better glass.
Actually one more thing: If you go with Ebay, I'd suggest finding one of the sellers with thousands and thousands of positive reviews. That's a pretty good indicator that they're somewhat legit. (Not 100%, but not the worst way to try to protect yourself)
i say to meet at starbucks or mcdonalds and just call sprint to swap phones.
i have done it like 14 times now.
Just got my dinc 2 replaced by asurion and it came 2.2.2!! I'm so stoked, I was almost sure it would come with gb but guess I got lucky

If the phone was wrapped in plastic and has the do not remove thing on the screen chances are it's new. The phone I think is still too new to get a refurb but you never know.
I also believe if it's a refurb it will have to say it in the box saying something along the lines of it's "like new"
My GF got one from Asurion on Monday and it was brand new, The box was not sealed, but it had GB on it.
Well it was in the plastic bag and had a film over the screen that just said do not remove

I hate to say it but that is not true.
To truly tell if you got a refurb or a new phone, look at the top bar code on the side of the package. If there is a sticker covering it with "CLNR" plus a bunch of other letters, then you got a refurb.

Read the rest of my post. Not saying it was matter of fact, but most likely.
Also like with the barcode, they have to tell you if it's a refurb. It will be marked refurbished somewhere.

They might do that to identify replacements for warranty purposes, since replacements only carry the warranty duration of the phone they replaced.
Mine was the same way - in a retail box with all the films on the screen and camera lens. It included the battery, back, sd card, sim and the charger and cable were both sealed in their plastic bags. The box did have the CLNR sticker, but in every possible way, it appeared to be brand new. Still hadn't been upgraded to 2.3 either.
My wife got a real replacement, just the phone, back and sim in the little replacement pouch and it came with 2.3. We actually have a replacement for that on the way, since it suffers from a constant impromptu rebooting problem. I'm hoping she gets one still with 2.2 this time

Yea, I don't have my hopes up, I'll be happy if it comes with 2.2, but it's not a big deal. My wife barely uses more than e-mail and some light web browsing, so the advantages of root are totally lost on her.

Cool, thanks for the info. I checked mine and as I suspected, it's not a referb. Says "No" under refurbishment status. It does bug me a bit that the referb my wife received was clearly defective, as it's been plagued by the constant reboot issue from the minute we activated it. Obviously it was returned for that exact reason and they probably did little more than a factory reset and shipped it back out. Oh well, at least it's almost trivially easy to get them to send another.

My phone fell and hit my shiny new wood floors and the screen shattered.. I have TEP so I'm planning on having it replaced, but I'm wondering if I will get another Evo 4g or a Evo 3d?
I'd prefer to just get another 4g, but did hear about people recently getting 3d's from Asurion instead... anyone have a recent replacement that can chime in?

Most likely the 3vo...if its just the screen why not just replace it yourself if you want to keep it plus its a lot cheaper than the 100 dollar deductible

Although I've disliked this particular evo4g since I got it replaced, because it refuses to be undervolted and hates Tiamat kernels with a passion.

I cracked my screen 2 weeks ago, not shattered, but i know my sprint store people really good, to the point where i dont have to unroot to get my phone fixed cosmetically, They just replaced my screen with out having to pay the deductible, didnt even put it in the system, but sadly, i cracked my screen again playing around to much, i should invest in a case. Im wondering what thell do next, im waiting a little bit to get it fixed so i dont look like a dumbass breaking my phone twice in 2 weeks. Lol
Few coworkers of mine have T-mobile and are looking for a Samsung device for VPN support. Due to being in contract they're looking to get a good phone without breaking the bank. So that leads to the T-Mobile site selling refurbed T989s for $30.
Any refurbed owners want to offer any feedback? I think their greatest concern is the 90 day warranty - but from what I know on the E4GT it's extremely likely that if it breaks you'll notice it before then. They're not looking to root it or do anything special either, in case that's a factor.
TIA and I did search by XDA forum search on General & Q/A before posting - so hopefully that will avoid the flaming.
P.S. Hope you guys get the OTA today and that it has the eMMC fix in there as it is rumored to!
No one has a refurbed GS2 from T-mobile? Find that hard to believe....

After sending mine back once for a random hardware issue, as always, tmobile sends me a refurb in pristine condition, but clearly its not brand new straight out of the box. I've had 0 problems with it and as with any other refurb'd products i've purchased always work just as good as new.
When I had HTC's Glacier / Mytouch 4g I went through 4 sendbacks from various stupid things I had done to it, all returns got refurbished back, which all worked fine (until I broke them myself)

Person was quoted 100 for new blaze or 30 for GS2 refurbed as a few of their upgrade options. Value plan, they mainly need for vpn support, good browser and terminal emulator.

From my experience with warranty exchange, the refurb phones are as good as new. I have never had an issue with a refurb phone and would not worry about it. But for $30 that sounds really cheap for a GS2, even if it is refurbed. Do you have to sign a contract with them or something? The price just sound too good to be true for a straight out purchase NO CONTRACT involved.
I have a refurbished T989
I had a new one but it stopped working properly, it began to act as if the desk dock or sometimes the car dock was attached to it. Became very annoying. Tmobile sent me a refurbished one, though I wasn't too happy about it. The packaging was identical to a new one. I was even allowed to keep the extra battery & back cover. They asked to send the old one back, and this was earlier this year. Everything seems ok so far "knock on wood"
The one thing I'd like to say is, I used to work at Best Buy Mobile. We'd sell insurance policies where people would pick up refurbished phones if they broke theirs, and honestly, those were garbage. Too many would come back with problems again...not good.
So you know, it's a risk

I have a refurb right now. Looks brand new. Send as a handset exchange from my amaze cuz they had none to send me. Youd never get a refurb with any damage or scratches from T-Mobile. I also have the premium handset protection so its always warrentied. Dont see the need to pay extra when I always can get other ones if there is problems.
Also for the person who said Blaze or SG 2, comeon now, thats an obv answer

If you get a refurb, you can count on it being the Made in Korea version produced pre December, 2011. All of those devices are known to exhibit mediocre screens when compared to the post December 2011 versions that are Made in China.
When I say mediocre screens, I am referring to the lines, blobs and poorly calibrated color. Though for $30, it is a good deal.
