[Q] Broke phone, have TEP. Will I get an Evo4g back? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Title says it all.
My phone fell and hit my shiny new wood floors and the screen shattered.. I have TEP so I'm planning on having it replaced, but I'm wondering if I will get another Evo 4g or a Evo 3d?
I'd prefer to just get another 4g, but did hear about people recently getting 3d's from Asurion instead... anyone have a recent replacement that can chime in?

Most likely the 3vo...if its just the screen why not just replace it yourself if you want to keep it plus its a lot cheaper than the 100 dollar deductible

tbh I didn't know you could. I'l have to look into that.
Although I've disliked this particular evo4g since I got it replaced, because it refuses to be undervolted and hates Tiamat kernels with a passion.

I just got one from Asurion 3 weeks ago,it all depends on what they have in stock. You can fill out a claim online and it will tell you what they are going to send you before you submit your payment information.

I've gotten a few good used screens (whole bezel, digitizer, lcd) from ebay with great results. They are around $50 shipped. I even found a mini torx set at lowe's for a few bucks.

I have a similar issue. My screen works fine, but there is one large crack. I wanted to get one from amazon, but the ratings are either 5 star or 1 star. Anyone get one from Amazon have any luck. I trust people here, not some schmuck who leaves a comment on amazon.

I could probably sell you one from our shop, we have a few in stock right now, ill have to check on what we price it at, I need to know also as I have a deep scratch across the bottom of my screen, somehow in the past few days. Ill let you know if you are interested.

I cracked my screen 2 weeks ago, not shattered, but i know my sprint store people really good, to the point where i dont have to unroot to get my phone fixed cosmetically, They just replaced my screen with out having to pay the deductible, didnt even put it in the system, but sadly, i cracked my screen again playing around to much, i should invest in a case. Im wondering what thell do next, im waiting a little bit to get it fixed so i dont look like a dumbass breaking my phone twice in 2 weeks. Lol

[Q] WTH Sprint?? *Cracked Screen*

So last night I dropped my launch day EVO and cracked it. Brought to independent store just now and they said they can't fix it. Told to go to corporate store or file insurance.
CS guy on phone with Sprint told me it wasn't physically possible to change screen...lying &*&^(*&.
I DO NOT WANT REFURB!! Just my screen fixed! Will the corporate store do this or will I get runaround again???
i took my phone to a corp store when it had white spots on the screen. in about 45 mins i had my phone back with a new screen and cover installed
Corp store will be the same unfortunately. Ill fix it if you're from south Texas

lol.....I remember that thread. Funny stuff.
OP: I'm looking at my cracked screen right now. I actually started a similar thread recently because I couldn't find the housing anywhere but found it minutes after I posted the thread. I bought this for $34 including Priority Mail:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220671323934&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
I bought this for $25 shipped so I can replace this at the same time and have my phone looking new again:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190476872380&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
And I plan on following this to do it myself:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwDysxiiYu8
It's costing me $40 less than my deductible with Asurion and I also don't want a refurb nor do I want to start over with my phone. The digitizer comes with peelable tape and the adhesive already on it, so no mission there. If you feel like this is something you can do, then here's something to think about.

Yep. Broken screens can only be handled by Asurion, who doesnt fix phones, they replace them. If you dont want a different phone, then dont drop it.

This is true...they won't do anything for me. I went to corporate store and they won't budge. I am really mad. Terrible (change in) policy for Sprint especially since I KNOW they were replacing screens not too long ago and I was told my screen could be replaced with TPE in the past. All of a sudden I can't.
I have apps in development/testing on my phone and I would really prefer not to have to switch phones. It seems so easy to just replace the freakin screen and that is what makes this so frustrating.
Thanks to the poster who posted the "do it yourself" route but I would prefer to not have to go through all that myself...I would prefer to spend that time developing apps and spending time with my family.
Instead it looks like I am going to have to pay $100 for a pos refurb that I will have to start all over on.
To the poster I am replying to...I have protected this thing from day one but accidents happen. Mine just happened 1 month too late apparently.

You know I watched the video and looked at the components...I think I might try it. So it is for sure just the digitizer and not the lcd?
Contemplating my next move. Still pissed at Sprint though!!!!!!
The digitizer is not as easy as it looks which is why I took the route of installing the digitizer preinstalled to the LCD. FYI I bought it from gadget fix too

Yup.....the LCD screen is a separate piece from the LCD. I'm going to try it. Worse case scenario, I can always claim the phone if I can't put humpty dumpty back together again. If you can deal with the screen as is for a bit, I plan on coming back here to post my results for everyone's reference.

Why do you say that? I'm diving head first into this as soon as the parts arrive, so if you know of any hardships that come with installing the digitizer, let me know. From the video, it seems pretty straight forward.

It is was very hard to get the screen to sit at the perfect height, it was to close to the LCD causing a water effect. also if you don't get it right the first time, the tape that is included, if you could call it that, is not reusable, since you already ought it for 35 or whatever you said theres no point in my advice now but for anyone in the future, find out what LCD you motherboard takes and save yourself a bunch if time and stress by just doing a LCD and digitizer together replacement. My two cents
You're pissed at Sprint because YOU broke YOUR screen? Hardly seems fair.
I posted this in another thread, I'll post it here too:
The $35 repair fee does cover exchanges or repairs without insurance. However, the policy was slightly modified as of Feb 1st. Any LCD/lens/digitizer with multiple cracks or a single crack longer than 1 inch is considered damaged beyond repair (DBR). An insurance claim would have to be filed. If the digitizer simply stops functioning, it can still be replaced under insurance or the $35 repair fee.
For those that would want to do the repair themselves, be warned. There are two different types of Evo screens. One made by Sharp and one made by AUO. They are not interchangeable.

The policy changed due to abuse. Customers were coming in for 3 and 4 screen replacements because they kept butterfingering their phones. It got so bad that Evo screens were backordered throughout the entire company at one point a few months ago.

No, what hardly seems fair is that when I got the TPE replacing the screen was INCLUDED IN THE AGREEMENT. On top of that people with the same plan same insurance same everything had their screen replaced FOR FREE just last month. But for some reason I have to submit a $100 claim and recieve a refurb. That is why I am pissed at Sprint not because I broke my phone. I admit it is my fault that I broke the screen but Sprint changed the rules in the middle of the game and Sprint is treating me different than other customers who pay and have the exact situation that I do. NOW THAT HARDLY SEEMS FAIR.
I would be willing to pay extra on top of the insurance and everything else I pay for to have the screen replaced but it is no longer possible to have the screen replaced NO MATTER WHAT.

I agree with this. I told them I would bring the parts in myself and they could charge me for labor and they said they were "not allowed" to touch my phone because it had physical damage......even if I wanted to pay for it.

Yeah, How much I'm a buy and sell guy as some people on this forum know, give me your best price
it is a refurbished 0003 hardware version sent to me by sprint in november and is starting to show the screen separation issues on the bottom left corner, has some scratches on the back cover and pitting/scratches and hairline cracks on the outside edge (typical power button crack plus another on the left side). original launch day battery from my 0002 evo, scratched camera lense that doesn't seem to affect photos, and original charger missing but replacement generic included. sprint car charger included, and rooted with unrevoked 3. amon ra 2.3 recovery, can load whatever ROM on it if anyone cares, comes with 16gb class 2 card. i know it has some cosmetic issues but id still like to get $200 for it. i think that's a decent price since you could possibly get some of the stuff fixed by sprint with insurance and it doesn't have any functional issues that im aware of. have the wimax keys backed up for your flashing comfort, and if you buy from me you won't have to get on a sprint contract.

[Q] Tired Of Bugs with EVO.. What Should I Trade for?

My Evo has been having issues with text messages and all sorts of things. I am quite tired of it all and I am considering taking it in for maintenance. Back in the day I had an HTC Touch Pro (Raphael), one of the most buggy phones ever released, and I had to take it back twice. The second time, Sprint told me I could trade it for any phone that my plan accepted. I traded up to a Touch Pro2 (Rhodium) which was probably my favorite phone ever. After a year and a half with that phone, I bought an EVO on an upgrade just 3 days before the 3D was announced to the public (my life sucks lol). I still used the EVO when it arrived even though I had 30 days to return it. However I am having multiple issues with the EVO Running out of space for no reason and it not loading simple Apps or even making calls sometimes. I've tried rooting it and using different ROMs but it seems to be an internal issue of some kind. This phone is in amazing condition, Otterbox and Zagg Skins have been on it since unboxing and it has been dropped in the Otterbox maybe one time. If I take it in, what should/can I switch to? I'd love a new EVO 3D lol but I would take an EvoShift if I had to so I could have the battery life and the keyboard as well as Sense 2.1. I am just wondering if anyone else has run into my issue and would be willing to share what their best option ended up being. Thanks to all who reply with helpful input.
I am also curious about this. I absolutely loved this phone but a few issues have me wanting to throw this thing into a wall. I have been having reception issues lately (getting terrible/no signal in an area i know i have good coverage), and a bug that popped up randomly a few months ago that causes extremely high display usage on any sense rom (causing horrible battery life), it does not happen with aosp and I'm not switching to aosp because it has too many bugs.
Basically, i want to know if i take my phone in for an insurance claim (ill crack the screen or something), if i can get a nexus s 4g. I don't see why not since they stopped making the evo and may not even have any in stock, and the nexus is of the same value if not cheaper. Can anyone chime in on this?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I am with you. The Nexus S looks way better to me right now. Or even the Shift. It got the update to Sense 2.1. It seems as though we have been left behind with our Evo's. I just unrooted and I am going to go to the store and see what they'll offer me as a trade. As far as them being out of stock, I highly doubt it. Just because they've stopped production doesn't mean they don't have a warehouse full of refurbished EVO's somewhere. I am ready to abandon this device and move on to something more powerful.
The nexus s 4G has no notification light or micro SD slot. Keep that in mind.

Read the OP. I am rooted. Let me clear things up.. I am taking my Evo in to have it replaced because it is "faulty." In the past Sprint has let me exchange my phone (whatever it was) for one that was of equal or lesser value. I am wondering what my best choice would be. I am locked in contract until 2013 so buying a new phone is just about out of the question. I am thinking of trading my Evo for either a Nexus S or an EvoShift. I'd like to exchange it for a newer phone if I can.

Phone VS pavement= Not a good ending for my phone

I was afraid that this would happen to my phone so I bought a Ballistics case for it (since Otterbox decided NOT to make a grossly over-priced case for the T989). Anyway, I'm sorry this happened to you
I would scour ebay for parts or see if someone is selling a defunct t989 you could buy and scavenge the parts. You shouldn't have to pay more than $200 including shipping.

I use to have insurance. But after paying ten bucks a month for 22 months, plus the 100 deductible, that's outrageous for a refurbished device. They go for 200 on Craigslist in my area. Insurance is a rip off.. in my experience

Not really because you get warranty for life you can have as many exchange as you want even when you brick your phone plus it works for any phone that is or was used to your sim card so I think paying my end 5 bucks is well worth it.
And by the way you are right, if i ever crack my screen I prefer to get a new one. people the repair cell phone screens never leave as it used to be. you can tell a lot that the screen been replaced

Hahaha the only phone I got from a warranty exchange that was new from tmobile was when my sensation got a power button defect and tmobile gave me the amaze brand new in box as a warranty exchange. then a few days later i guess they figure about the glitch because the amaze was not long since it came out and took it off from their system as a alternative phone lol.
but guess what I'm kinda tik off from tmobile is that I called to change a plan for my sons phone and the rep could hear an echo so we ketp talking and she said that if I wanted a warranty exchange, my answer was there is no point on getting the same phone that my have the screen bleed or else cause of samsung defect and she had the guts to gave me these alternative phone that I was like omg I better stick to what i have.
1. HTC AMAZE 4G I already had it sold it for the sensation
2. Sidekick 4g
3. Nokia Lumia.
4. Samsung Galaxy S 4G.
5. HTC HD2
Phones that are not even compatible to the S2
Warranty exchange and insurance claim is different. You can exchange as many times as you like but you can only claim insurance twice in 365 days.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
The other difference with an insurance claim is you have to pay a deductable of about 130 per claim when you have the TMOBILE US insurance. I had the insurance on my last phone the HD2 and never used it. Have it on the SG2 as well. Have no idea what you get when you have to file a claim, lesser phone if the phone is discontinued or refurbished?
I had coverage on other phones with SquareTrade and their servce was great. Bought a used phone off eBay, put on the coverage. If something happens, they basically refund the cost for up to two years. Not considering the insurance is dirt cheap compared to the TMobile monthly cost.

Ouch! Well, if this will make it feel better, I've had worse:
Phone + Pavement + Bus # 85 = I'll leave the state of the phone to your imagination. I will, however, say that the SIM card inside was also dead.
And if that didn't make you feel better, I hope it at least made you laugh (I can tell you I wasn't laughing when I saw the result of this combo). That was expen$ive.
Ok, here's the deal: the glass on your phone is just that: glass. What makes it strong is that it's laminated: several layers of glass at tension against each other. You compromise one layer, the entire piece of glass is garbage, it cracks in a spiderweb pattern like what you see. So your glass is a goner.
What about the digitizer under it? Test it very carefully: touch everywhere on your screen and test if the phone will detect it. If not, your digitizer is gone too, you do need that $180 screen assembly. What about the LCD? Any dead pixels / lines / areas?
HOWEVER
If the LCD and the digitizer still work, there is some hope yet: your glass is broken, but your phone still works! What you need to do now is find a way to glue it together again. It will never be like new. It will never be strong again, and your phone will probably die a nasty screen death within a year or so, but that's a year you don't have to buy another phone. I think Walmart has some service to repair broken glass (at least here it does). If the digitizer works, that is. IF it works. And IF your LCD is not damaged. And IF that service is what it claims to be.
Don't expect miracles, your best case scenario is a phone with visual artifacts from the broken glass.
Damn ...
Heard they were now selling our phone for $299 brand new. Not sure how much truth there is to that since I'm in Canada but worth looking into.

[Q] Broken bracket from digitizer PLEASE HELP ME!!

I bought the evo 4g a while back for 400 bucks, within a few weeks I dropped the phone cracking the digitizer. Done a ton of research on how to fix it, then ordered a new one plus all the tools to fix it on Amazon. while I was putting it back together, I was super careful returning them to their brackets, however, a couple of the tiny little hair sized wires on the base bracket bent crossing over some of the others, I tried to straighten them out but of course this didn't work I suppose, when I got it all back together, the phone will not turn back on. I have looked in millions of online places on what I can do but found nothing, I have also called the Sprint repair store who basically laughed at me and said I threw away 400 bucks. the only thing I can think of aside from tossing my money in the trash, is hope and pray that I can find someone with some extra brackets and hope and pray I can somehow replace it without screwing it up again. Please PLEase PLEASE, if anyone can help me at ALL I would be so very greatf

If it's an OG EVO 4G , you can get a good portion of the parts to repair it online.
Lolololol if u really bought an og evo 4g (supersonic) for 400 $ u got smacked across the head. I woulda sold u mine for $200 with a 16gb class 10sd 4 batteries and 6 cases. I really hope u meant the aluminum unibody evolte and not the dinosaur og

hmm
Im not really sure, how can I tell if it is an OG, it's not aluminum body its plastic, and yea, I figured I was getting smacked in the face on price anyway, but it was worth it to me to get a good phone since I was just finally getting rid of my old G1 lol,. but here I am back to the G1. Im not really sure what to do, I would really hate to spend another couple hundred bucks for YET ANOTHER phone, espcially since my luck so far tells me I will be screwing it up again in no time lol. I really appreciate your guys' help.

I might be stupid as hell, I'm not sure, but thank you for all of your highly helpful and informative insight, been using XDAdevelopers forum for years, wouldn't have expected anything less from some members
