I Have A Confession - Windows Phone 7 General

Ok, I recently bought a used iPad from a developer, he is upgrading to iPad2.
Anyway, I have been playing with the iPad for the last couple days, and didn't touch my Windows Phone 7 until just now.
I don't know why fanbois are bragging about iOS. I just couldn't believe how smooth the aesthetic of Windows Phone 7 is. I was actually bored with it, and think I'll sell the iPad on craigslist. I wish Microsoft would do Windows Phone 7 slate...it would so awesome!

there is a lot of strong rumours going on about Windows 8 (that's right, continuation of Windows 7, not Windows Phone 7) being very tablet focused as well. And amoung those rumours are that they might take a few aspects of Windows Phone 7, but not sure at this stage. And there is also a rumour that they'll show off Windows 8's UI at the All things D confrence in June.

Future smartphone market share

In the future, what would your guesstimate be to where Windows Phone 7 would stand?(vaguely in 2012)
Will it be strongly dominate in America, but weak internationally?
Will it fail everywhere, and microsoft struggles to reach 2 digit percentages?
I personally think, by 2012, Windows Phone 7 will be stable and highly recognized platform. I'm confident it will make the top 3 in smartphone OSes in America and Europe. I dont believe it'll be able to surpass Android, ever(not bias, or showing favoritism) but Android has middle and high-end products. Hopefully not, but Blackberry may still be in top-three for business and average consumers. So to me, Windows Phone 7 would fall 2nd and third, and iOS a close forth.
So what do you guys think?
My guess for 2012 in the US:
Android
RIM
IOS
WP7/WebOS
I think its too late for webOS. Though i would love to see it succeed in tablet market

with the second resolution size ie smaller screen there will be mid range phones...
2012 is too early, but for the future...
Possibility one: (= WP7 is successful)
Android 40%
WP7 20%
Symbian/Meego 15%
iOS 10%
Blackberry 10%
others 5%
Possibility two: (=WP7 fails)
Android 70%
Symbian/Meego 10%
iOS 10%
WP7 5%
Blackberry 5%
Symbian
RIM
Android
WP7
iOS
PalmOS
2012 is abit too close but I believe WP7 can take down Android eventually, because most people I know who got an Android handset only got it because it was the only other phone they could get other than an iPhone, the others had either an ugly outdated UI/hardware aesthetics (symbian/nokia) or were too businessy (RIM). And with a wide variety of hardware, made it easier for them to choose Android. Most are regretting it now because they can't help but compare it to iOS where everything just works, some apps dont run as well on their Android handsets, and iOS' in general has better eye candy, from their icons to their animations.
WP7 brings in the best of both worlds (iOS' closed system which should bring in quality apps and just work, as well as hardware differentation)
Well i chose 2 years, because 3-4years just seems harder to predict. There may be many turns of events. But 2year contracts will expire, and WP7 should be on every major carrier with a good variety of WP7 by 2012. Basically it should be fair game by 2012
WP7 will never surpass IOS, sad but true.
Android at 70%? Come one, get serious please.
I'm saying by 2014:
Android: 40%
WP7: 25%
iOS: 25%
The rest: 10%

While Android is growing at exponential rate, it will slow down. I also think it won't chip away Symbian that quick, if your speaking worldwide.

hi i had a htc hero and desire and an iphone 3gs ..
switched yesterday to htc hd 7 ......
i will see, if it was the right choice ...... but i dont compare these 3 os ... cause win 7 is like a baby .. verry new ..
but remembering this fact, the k
I switched from an Android phone to WP7 last week.
The main reason was speed/responsiveness of the os; I never thought android was particularly slow until I used wp7. I do miss some of the apps I had on android, but so far the speed, ease of use, and overall feel of wp7 is more important to me than any missing features.
It's only been a week, so that could change; I tend to get bored and change phones fairly often. I don't think I'd go back to Android though, I wasn't loving it. I loved the palm pre I had before my android phone, If HP puts out some sick hardware in 2011 I could be tempted to go back.
I switched from an iPhone 4 to an HTC Surround (still have the iPhone, so I can switch back and forth), and I'm very impressed with WP7. Although there's a lot missing, everything there is so detailed and polished that you don't think about what you don't have. Also, I was surprised by the quality of the screen, considering I was coming from an iPhone 4, which is widely considered to have the best smartphone screen. I didn't notice a decrease in quality, and the colors actually seem more vibrant on the HTC
My previous phones were: Nexus One, HTC Hero, Blackberry Storm 2, Nokia N900, Palm Pre, Acer Liquid, iPhone 3GS, HTC Dream. So I'm switching handsets and OSes often but I was in love with Android, now I think I'll stay with WP7 some months. At least until we get cut&paste + multitasking.
The problem is that I'm in love with the HTC HD7 and the Samsung Omnia 7 but I've got a Trophy (happy with my Trophy but I want 4").
I like the responsiveness (smooooth!) of the UI and also the multimedia capabilities + Zune Pass
im switching from android 2.1. Mainly because just want to try new platform. so far i like WP7. even with all its short comings.
One thing I personally feel is that somehow WP7 feels more like a phone, while android feels like super mini tablet. not really sure why.
I also love the speed and responsiveness of the phone. definitely better then my old android maybe. although to be honest hardware difference might also played a strong influence.
I have my Iphone 4, my Optimus 7 and an Acer Liquid. Can't stan the lag with Android so it's rarely used my Iphone 4 is used solely for my iTunes library now (basically iPod touch) but this is only due to my lazyness in switching my library to Zune. Once I do that I may just sell the iPhone. We will see after the January update.
I have the epic 4g, im switching because i dont like android and wp7 looks like something new and fun
My wife had a G1 (white) and she now has a HD7. She liked what the Win7 had to offer and Netflix was a plus for her. I had a G1 (black, rooted) and now I have a G2. Im sticking with Android because it gives me plenty of options.
I have been a Windows fans for some years, but I am now an Android user. I Tested the HD7 at a HTC roadshow last week. my feeling to WP7 is that it is far from the current standard of a smartphone. it lacks of a lot of elements to be a "all-in-one" device.
I will keep my Android for some while.
My girlfriend got a galaxy S vibrant and my buddy has a Nexus One. My other buddy has an Iphone and after playing with all those phones, I went and got a HD7.
I will not be looking back as I am a patient man and trust that MS will make those updates work for us.
I mean, they managed to save Vista right?
Switching from a Vibrant to an HD7 myself soon. I'm getting it mainly to test some applications I've been developing. But the speed and UI, as well as unified updates has pushed me over the edge.
i switch from android (samsung captivate froyo). i like to tinker with new OS. i love them all. ps, for those with so call lagging android, they don't know what they're doing. switching to wp7 from my captivate was a step down especially in apps and speed.

I had a samsung galaxy s (running 2.1, rooted, with lag fix) before switching to WP7. Granted there are a lot of things android does better than WP7, but it doesn't come close in terms of speed - even with the lag fix.
This is my opinion anyway. So in your opinion I don't know what I'm doing?

then why did I have to root and install a lag fix on my buddy's vibrant? He couldn't understand why his real android phone worked worse than my hd2 running android from the card....
well i switched last just yesterday from iphone 4 to hd7. I must say i'm very impressed. It is fresh take on any OS and for what it is worth it beats all of them hands down. Ok it doesn't future some bits and bobs but mostly they well come with an update.
I switched and I am eagerly waiting for my venue pro. going back to android from wp7 I found myself growing impatient and frustrated at android's seemingly snail pace and lack of fluidity in the ue department
the ability to try programs, the zune experience, and the overall ue experience really makes for an excellent OS and microsoft should be proud of their progress thus far
Switched from an iPhone about a week after launched, I got a new Focus. Truth be told, when I went to the AT&T store (only went because I actually lost my iPhone) I had planned to buy an iPhone 4, but decided to look over the WP7 phones in person. I'd read some reviews that praised the OS but otherwise essentially said "wait for the update," but once I got my hands on the device and was able to play with it side by side with the iPhone 4, there really was no contest, and I bought the Focus.
So far WP7 isn't perfect. I'm sure we're all aware of the obvious features missing, and the fresh, new app store is far from what Android and iOS offer. But that said, there are so many things just *right* about WP7 that I really can't complain, especially hearing that the first update coming in January should fix a lot of those minor issues.
I look at the bright side of the platform's "newness": I've got lots of goodies to look forward to. It's just like when I first got an iPhone, except faster, sleeker and far more useful
Currently an HTC Hero owner (android) planning to switch to DVP WP7 sometime next year!
currently on android (htc desire z), will switch to wp7 when there is more support for the OS. From what I've seen though, wp7 is making a lot of progress despite being in its early stages. Hope MS can give consumers an OS that will leave me with no regret when I switch over from android.

No, there is not. Why would you get the worst WP7 phone and try to clear off it's one selling point? The OS.
well its not a bad one.

the big issue, of course, is the dodgy screen. Sometimes the OS will even start scrolling on its own on that phone or the 3 buttons will become unresponsive until you lock and unlock the device. Aside from that, the display is washed out leaving the blacks grayish. Aside from that, the kick stand is in the worst place on any phone ever, the speakers get about as loud as my DVP, and the battery life is horrid for such a brick of a device.
I have the screen not responding problem but not the rest. It usually happens when I plug it into the charger .. battery life is only 1230 mAh so I understand why its bad. I charge it twice a day.
Sent from my T8788 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Just check out the display compared to that of a DVP, focus, even an HD7s. The difference is crazy. That kick stand is an inconvenience in my opinion. I can't count the number of times I tried closing the phone on that for the 2 weeks I tried to use that as my daily driver.
Unfortunately display size on all WP suck. If that's really important you are better off with the Samsung galaxy nexus.. I might be switching too. not cause of the display and not cause I don't like WP. I think WP is the best mobile os but its too restrictive. Right now my Comcast is out since the past 3 days because of the snow storm. I can't tether with my phone because at&t doesn't allow it. If I had android I could root my phone and pretty much do anything.
Sure Android has a lot of flaws but I feel like its the only Os where you can actually do something about them. If something is broken most likely there is a solution on xda for it.
With wp and ios it won't get addressed,if ever, for a full year and there is no aftermarket solution.
And the specs of the latest androids look pretty tempting. Who doesn't want a dual core 720p phone. Even though WP doesn't need it, it can't hurt to have that much power for the same price.

well said buddy...that's the reason I'm switching to android...
will definitely come back here, when windows 8 and windows phone are available...alienware+windows 8 and galaxy note with windows phone 8 will be the day, I come back here...
Alienware is a joke, overhyped hardware that's overpriced. You could buy higher spec stuff at your local electronic shop for half the price and throw it all together in 2 hours.
Enjoy your transition to android, I wasn't capable of going back after such a pleasant UX. Didn't matter what I modded, WP7 just felt better.
Really?alienware sucks???actually I love the light effects and I can get the m11x in my country for about 900-1000 usd. However, will see what happens when windows 8 is releases. still comparing though...
Alienware is just slightly sup'd up dell. If you want a decent gaming computer, build it yourself. You can get better for much cheaper.

WP7 Tablets?

There are Android tablets and the iPads, are there tablets on the market running WP7?
No, microsoft products go on things called 'slates', which have existed long before tablets and the iPad, but are always better. Even the older slates are better than modern tablet...
But they cost a pretty penny. You won't find one for less than $1,000
They run full blown Windows 7.
Soon they'll run Windows 8
There will never be a WP7 tablet.
you mean something like Samsung series 7?
what you are looking at is windows 8, those will be the tablets with the metro interface(aka wp interface)

I completely disagree.
I tried one out a few weeks ago. Couldn't even get the fershlugginer keyboard to stay up. I'd click on a type area... it would freeze first of all.. then the keyboard would pop up. As soon as I went to touch it, it would disappear.
After about 4 minutes of this, I slowly put it down, walked away, and will never touch another Windows 'slate'.

so you had one bad experience with a particular slate, and you will never touch another Windows slate? Blaming everything on the OS?
I'm using a Windows 8 in my laptop (without touch screen), and I think, it is very fast.
But if we put WP7 on tablet... uhh, bizarre
Supposedly Nokia and some Chinese companies are racing to make $200.00 tablets that run Windows 8 by mid or late this year.

I've read so many claims that windows 7 on tablets is superior to ipad/android its deafening. The problem is, I've never seen one being used as a tablet, or being used period, other than in stores. Never met one person that has liked w7 on a tablet, but the internet is full of gushing reviews. Weird.
i for one don't care for 800x480 stretched over a 7" screen.
I've got a leno multitouch netbook running the developer edition (pre beta here guys) of windows 8 and it runs awesome. Even snappier then windows 7 on it. The netbook by no means has stellar specs either. Its similar to but definitely not identical to the wp7 interface. When I bring it out in public though I get a lot of interested people asking questions as they see me swiping the metro interface back and forth to open applications.

I've got a Samsung Series 7 Slate and I'm loving it so far. Its fairly powerful, and the form factor is fantastic. I set up a separate partition and loaded up Windows 8 on it. Windows 8 works very well on a tablet. Its very responsive and intuitive. It does crash occasionally but what do you expect for a beta build.

[Q] Holding off buying Note 8, see Asus Vivotab Note 8

Was all set to buy a Note 8 but the Asus Vivotab 8 has caught my eye, looks pretty good. And I love Win 8.1. Really!
Big thing for me is the pen of course, and being able to circle from one document and paste into another (eg multi windows side by side). Not certain how OneNote or the Vivotab will be with that, but of course the Galaxy handles that brilliantly. Big plus for Samsung... should do what it says on the tin.
What puts me off is the thought that there might be something new from Samsung about to come along... an improved Note 8? Tempted to hold off!
If anyone has compared the 2 side by side and can offer an opinion I'd be really grateful!
Thx

Well I chose the Note 8.0 because I could get em new at low cost. Thought about the Venu Pro 8.0 but tired of MS. I don't think I'll ever go beyond my Windows 7 X64, until Ubuntu gets better. Maybe I am harsh on Linux but I could never get it to run right with the hardware I got. Geezo it is about 10 years old, and I can't believe Windows is the only stable OS that runs decent. Well put that as a plus for your 8.1 purchase.
