What exactly happens when you get the error? What activity are you doing on the phone when it happens? And how does the error affect the operation of whatever it is that you're doing? I've never seen error 78 before, but error 67, data call failure is fairly common sometimes, usually a problem on sprint's end with that. I googled error code 78 and came up with nothing, except a post that was over two years old with some old HTC phone, and the guy said the only thing that fixed it was waiting two days, haha. Sorry I couldn't be of much help, but maybe a little more info will assist in that.
The error code reads..... "Data Call Failure. Error code 78 network error. Sign in failed. Please wait a moment and try again. If problem persits contact Sprint." It does it whenever it wants. Doesn't matter if I'm making a call, reading a text, typing a text, market, internet or even just looking at the home screen. It seems to more constant here in Syracuse, was in down state and not really an issue. The other weird thing that happens is the time stamp for text messages. Say for example, I text someone at 1200pm and they reply 5 minutes later. So the time on my phone is now reading 1205pm on the clock, but the time stamp for said reply would be 405pm. It only seems to have that issue when that error message is appering. As for the effects on my phone, it will kick me from whatever I am doing to disply message. Also when it keeps coming up back to back I drop calls or just doesnt connect.
Andriod 2.2
Kernel netarchy-toastmod-4.3.1-bfs-nohavs-nosbc
Rom VaelPak 3.2 Remastered
I was using Myn RLS 5 and then went back to stock thru restore. And figured I would flash the current software listed above. Same thing with all 3

Strange. have you tried updating your profile and prl? go to menu>settings>system updates. Then choose update profile. after it completes, choose update prl. See if that helps at all.

I just tried doing both right now. The PRL worked just fine and updated. As for the profile update I got error code 1012 follow by error code 78. I will try again later while I am down near NYC, just because I dont seem to get the code down there. I just wish I could figure this out without having to call Sprint, cause this is really getting on my nerves

I'm getting the same error. Just started this week. Not sure what it is.
Edit:
I updated my PRL and profile just fine.
I started getting the error a day or two ago. I listen to audio books using MortPlayer during my commute to and from work. Both times, it was during the commute that I got the error. It doesn't effect anything it seems, as I only notice it when I'm done driving and look at my phone.
I'm in Portland Oregon.
Also using Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS 5.
Well I figured out the problem. The nice people down at sprint was able to force my profile to update. So far it has fixed my problem
So hopefully my profile update solved my problem too. Haven't seen the error since then. If I do I will post here again, otherwise I consider the problem solved with a profile update.

i got this same message repeatedly today when i received a text message. there was no time stamp issue, but would happen with every message.
although the last few weeks, if i have a message come in and i reply within the same minute they have the same time but go out of order.
im pretty sure that error means pay your bill on time

I too have been getting this error code 78 for about a week or so and I'm in Utah so I don't think it's related to geographic location. I have also been getting the same out of sync time stamps but add to that duplicate and triplicate messages coming through. I just ran the system updates you mentioned and will let you know if the problem isn't solved. I planned to take my phone to Sprint tomorrow if this didn't work. Thanks for the self help information. I hope it works. So inconvenient!

I'm having that same exact problem. I'm getting Error 78 (as well as 106, 138, &140 which are system errors). I find that it only occurs when I'm at work where I have almost no coverage. I also get the texts with the 4 hour delayed timestamp. I took my phone (which isn't rooted) to Sprint while I am still in my 30 day grace period. The technician there said he ran a Slate program and he couldn't get the PRL to update and the 3G connection would keep dropping. He told me it was something internal that he couldn't fix and that I need to send it back to Radioshack where I bought it. I've tried a factory restore and updating both profile and PRL this afternoon but still got errors so I'll be sending it back. Thing is, I threw out the box it came in and now Radioshack is going to charge a $50 missing item fee! Trying to weigh the pros and cons...

My PRL is 60668. When I click update PRL or update Profile, it says "Checking for PRL/Profile update", then says "PRL/Profile could not be updated. Please try again later. If the problem persists, you may need to contact Customer Service. Error code:1012". This happened to me a couple of ROMs ago, any suggestions as to what this is about?

Through research all I can see is the hard reset route, and CDMA workshop. It just seems like no one cares honestly
I've done at least 5 hard resets today and nothing. It just keeps saying "searching for network" I really didn't want to waste my entire day doing this. ugh. I know it must be somewhere in the settings, but Sprint peeps don't seem to have a clue either.

No it's not somewhere in the settings, that's the problem. You went to settings, system upgrade, then update prl and got the same error as me right?
If you have another phone, go online and switch over to it, then switch back, and it will be fixed. That or sprint themselves have some other option. The only way to fix it yourself is pretty complicated
We did all of that. The Sprint rep switched phones and everything and still nothing. It's just not finding the network. LAME!!!

Oh wow that sucks IDK, I'd call em back and complain, demand free service
UPDATE!!!! I thought wth I'll give Sprint another call and see if I can get a different advanced tech that might have some more ideas and get me back up and running. Well after about 2 minutes she asks for my ESN number to validate and well......IT WAS INCORRECT! She updated it to the correct one and voile it works now! My suggestion is to call them and verify that they have the correct ESN. Good luck.
There have been issues with CDMA activation/provisioning all day today. This would include data profile issues and possible PRL updates as well. Try again this weekend.

I will, thanks for the update, and glad your problem was fixed. This seems like a possible problem, considering all of the trouble I had switching the lines over, along with selling my old phone, activating old phone, then dummy phone, then evo, then switched evo.. I'll look into it.

Ha bro this issue has been happening for a long time, check the dates
I'm having this same problem. Just did my first root and installed Fresh Evo 3.1.0.1, with the recommended newest radio/wimax. Everything but the phone works great. I can still dial and receive calls at my normal number, showing good reception, but there is tons of hiss and my voice almost never makes it to the other phone.
Tried to Update Profile and Update PRL, and both gave me Error 1012. Sprint's website is down right now (4 AM Sunday morning), so maybe the network is simply not currently serving updates.
However, if it's something that can be fixed, I'd be grateful if anyone has an idea.
I could be wrong but if i recall error 1012 is a Sprint data/vision username/password error and is correctable with a call to tier 2 tech support.
I cant remember for certain tho, But I believe thats what that is, I know i've seen it quite a few times before.
Im now having this issue. What has been the cause for most of you? If you found out.

I have been using CM6 flawlessly for the past couple weeks. However, today I realized that my phone was awfully quiet. Turns out I'm not receiving texts at all. I did a test with my GV number and I can send texts fine, but receiving them yields a big goose egg.
Should I update my PRL? I'm hesitant to do that because it would require a restore and backup. I've tried reflashing CM6 to no avail. Anybody have any suggestions?
A couple other threads I saw suggested a PRL update, but they were for phones on different carriers. Not sure if the same will work for our Evo.
EDIT: My PRL version is 60670, if that means anything

Thank you for being condescending. Yes I do know, preferred roaming list. Basically, it tells the phone what bands to use and in what order. I know for a fact that having a bad PRL can cause issues like this, it used to happen with my Hero.
Furthermore, I just flashed to DC and updated my PRL and, lo and behold, texts came in. Issue resolved. Thanks anyway.

try this:
backup your current cm6 config. flash a rooted stock rom and update prl. then restore your cm6 backup and you will have your txt messaging back...don't forget to wipe when you get off the potty boo boo...

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I'm having problems with my Evo running CM7. I can't send any text messages (they fail every time) and when I try and make a phone call, a voice comes up saying "Your authentication code could not be verified." I flashed over to the Fresh rom and updated my PRL and profile and rebooted the phone and still, get the exact same message. I'm not roaming because it's happening in my current town.
Does anyone have the slightest idea on what could fix this?
Thanks!
You should give Sprint a call on this one. Sounds like something on their end.

Flash back to a Sense ROM, call Sprint, and have them refresh your device in the system.

Happens all the time, lol. If I know they can do it and they won't/can't, I usually just call back.
About 2 weeks ago my phone stopped receiving SMS on the reg. They are ranging anywhere between 20 min to 2 hours to receive. There is no delay when I send to people, just on the receive. I've flashed back to sense and did a PRL and Profile update then restored CM 7.1. Sprint just says it's due to high usage due to the weather...not buying it. Weirdest thing about it being my wife's phone has the same issue and it developed at the exact same time. Running cm7.1, clockwork and savagedzen 2.2.1 BFS HAVS on both. I've also tried flashing to tiamat 4.0.7-799 w/sbc and same issue. Up to any suggestions
Is the wife using an EVO? Try a different ROM combo for a few days and see if this helps. How about CM7-RC1 after a full wipe?
You'll find the sweet spot
Grab the app Gingerbread SMS Ghostly, has grabbed quite a few lost texts for me.
https://market.android.com/details?id=it.sineo.android.GhostSMS&feature=search_result
Tried ghostly. Didn't work. The messages seem to come through if I place a call. I've resorted to calling my voicemail to check my text lately. I'm using 7.1 rc1. I did flash sprint lovers rom and sent myself a text with no luck either. Are there any network settings with sense based rom that can be checked/modified?
Sent from my Evo using XDA App
You will probably have to call sprint and be cranky, as its most likely a network issue.
They've reset my data a few times now and claim they've done all they can. I had the call escalated the last time and nothing really came of it. Seems like when I call them with the issue the text come through within 2 minutes. They claim anywhere up to 30 min is considered not an issue. Its BS. Since cellphone met text it's been near instant. My crappy Nokia block phone did just fine. I could understand if there was a national emergency but there is no reason for any lag. Ill call them again tomorrow. My wife sent me a message at 753pm and it is currently 10, No message

Did u change/update PRLs around the same time this started happening? Sprint changed a bunch of PRLs recently and now some people get terrible data. PRLs are mostly location based. So due to contracts with other carriers, your phone may be connecting to different towers and data is routed differently. Try a different prl for the hell of it
Sent from my HTC_supersonic using xda premium
no, hadnt made any changes to the phone. played around with a few prls and radios and no luck still. so far sprint has managed to give me $50 credit but no working phone.
I don't really know then man. Hmm. Try a data profile reset from the epst menu. ##3282# enter your msl, hit edit go to data profile and hit menu and then restore.
The phone will reboot itself and renew its data profile connection and prl etc all in one shot. Aside from that, I would think its a network type issue. Especially since its both of your phones.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Well...basically did that with my phone while on the phone with sprint last night. sat on the phone for 76 min (40 of that being on hold). I was using her phone to make the call. Got disconnected after all was said and done. Tried to call sprint back via 611 and automated message told me my account could not be authenticated or something to that nature. Long story short had to rerun activation using EPST reset. Her phone now works. Flashed it back to CM7.1 rc1 and hers is working correctly. Going to try to flash back to sense today on my phone and let it work its way through the reprogramming and I'll place a call or 2 from sense and wait a few before flashing back to CM. Thats the last thing i can really think to do.
On another note, I have found a temporary work-around on my issue for my phone. Google Voice has an option to intercept text messages. I turned that on and google voice gets them instantly. Only thing annoying is I dont have an SMS count anymore. ADW notifier will show a "?" on the icon for google voice. I guess that notification marker will do for now. Other than that, its a tolerable solution til i find the real one.
Sorry homey, I know it can be frustrating. But yeah try again with sense and see what happens. Best of luck.

Try a ##scrtn#
This will not wipe anything on your phone. It will simply reset your mobile network connection and force OTA provisioning.
By chance are you running AdBlock Plus? As it will block those from updateing.

Ok, tried this, but then my phone wouldn't activate; kept saying "Network error" when it tried hands free activation. Then, I couldn't call using the phone anymore. However, Going to settings-->activate device fixed it. But I still can't update PRL or profile.

Nope, I wish it was that easy
If you have another device laying around, try going onto Sprint.com and do a service swap to it. Then service swap back to this one. If you do not have one, you might need to call Customer Care to have them try it with a dummy device.
I recall having an issue similar to this on my wife's device. I don't remember exactly what I had to do to resolve it, but I did get it fixed.
Update in case anyone had the same problem. I called Sprint and got the run around until they finally said it was a hardware issue (ie: my phone) and not a network problem.
I decided to just live with it (and without WiFi hotspot) for a while. Then magically it started working again a couple of days ago. I bet it has something to do with the Sprint network being worked on that the techs were just clueless about. Seems to me that Sprint takes its sweet old time upgrading its towers.

Network Error, Please Try Again Later
I have had that issue for sometime now too. I only discovered it because my phone downloaded the ZVD update and for it to install properly it requires to update the profile first. I have the same "network error, please try again later" on both PRL and Profile. Spent about an hour with a higher level tech on the phone trying all types of things with no success. When I install the ZVD update it breaks the phone and wont receive calls and requires a push from sprint to reactivate. Every time I reboot now It attempts to do a hands free activation and fails but it is working. Last time this happened (ZVC update) I had to wipe the phone to fix it which I'm not in the mood for anytime soon. I've been waiting for a decent ROM with WiFi calling built in.

Yeah, old thread but thanks as this just helped me out. This is for my LG G4 by the way.
Thanks.
This is a common problem with Sprint. It's not your fault or the phone's fault. It's Sprint's rat butt network acting out. There's nothing that you, the techs you call (even if you get lucky and get a U.S.-based representative), or anybody else can do. The phone will keep trying to activate itself every few minutes until it finally does get through. Then you're set to go, except of course for the dropped calls, missed or delayed text messages, and 500k data speeds (on their alleged LTE network). That's assuming that one of the Sprint bloatware apps doesn't decide to freeze/soft-brick your phone.
There's a reason that Sprint is virtually giving away their services (i.e. the half-off your previous bill, free activation, and pay the early termination fee for the other carrier). They're Number 4 of the 4 major carriers, and that's not likely to change in the near future, because most of the MVNO's latch onto Sprint, which further burdens the resources they do have.
couldn't have said it better myself...then I keep asking myself why am I still with sprint!
THANK YOU! It was Adblock causing the error. Took me some time to find this answer.
