I have added Gmail with IMAP support to my TP2 and can choose to download only mail from the last day, last 2 days, last 3 days, etc. But I'm looking for an option to download only the new messages. I'm afraid this isn't possible?
If I recall correctly, you can also choose 1 wk, 2 wks, and 1 month as the amount of emails you want to download to your device.
Anyway, if what you want is just new mail, you set up your email account as a POP3 account and go to Gmail and enable POP3 for only new messages.
Problem with POP is that messages I will read on my TP2 keep unreaded on gmail webmail.
Is IMAP unable to check if a message is read or unread?
You're right regarding POP3. That's why IMAP is better. Everytime you connect via IMAP, your inboxes on your device and Gmail will sync. Meaning all read messages on your device will be marked as read and new messages will be downloaded.
But there's no way to just download new messages. You have to specify a suitable time period for your device to look back on Gmail's server to sync.
Well if you set it to 3 days then after 3 days it will only download new messages.

you can use outlook mail with google synch, you know, rather than IMAP and POP3, this way you can sync your mail, calendar, and even contacts....fins the settings on google website

Yes, but on day 4 there will be new messages which I have opened on gmail.com. I don't need those messages on my TP2, only the unreaded ones.

Yeah, I have used it to sync my Google Calendar but I'm looking for an easier way to receive only unreaded messages on my TP instead of visiting gmail.com on my TP2 (and mark as readed after reading them on my TP2).

If i create appointments on the phone and save them, they are put in outlook out box and not sent. I ave gmail imap setup and cant seem to get it to take over for the calendar. Current rom in sig

This will setup an Exchange-like server and will enable you to do that. At least I am pretty sure that isn't what you are already doing, because this will setup the email and sync Calendar, Contacts and Email with PUSH. Let me know if you need any help.

Part of the issue is resolved. We can now add to the calendar and it sends the email to those attendee's we add to that event, thru our gmail accounts. How i fixed that was going into the office folder and using the calendar link in there. In menu/tool/options, appointments page, there is a "send meeting requests via: (email account)". I just changed it from outlook email to our gmail account. So now it sends them out with the gmail account rather than sitting in the outlook outbox.
THE NEXT ISSUE is that when anyone sends you a meeting request, from outlook(pc) OR from the phones calendar thru gmail, if you recieve that request on the phone, there are no buttons to "accept/tentative/decline/propose new time", like there is in outlook pc. It just comes in as a regular email that looks very useless. The only way to accept or decline is to read the email in outlook on the pc where you have buttons "accept/tentative/decline/propose new time".

Actually, I did understand the issue.
You aren't setting the email up correctly. If it is showing up as Gmail, and not Outlook it isn't setup for Exchange. You need to remove that account and follow my link to setup Exchange features...
Im not following you on this exchange stuff. What does an exchange have to do with poutlook not showing an email with the same options as outlook on the pc?
ok i just set this up on phone. active sync on phone says attention required.
result: the config on your exchange server prevents you from sync'ing. please contact your serv admin.
BUT getting and sending email is working right. Syncing is working for email.
Creating a calendar event and adding attenees is not working at all now. The emails never go out. Sending an event to myself from my wifes phone somes into the phone the (no good). But comes into my outlook pc correctly
Setting up sync has its own issues. I sent an event from my phone to my wifes phone. Oh joy, i get an html page i can accept with on her imap email.
I accepted it on the wifes phone and it NEVER went onto her calendar on the phone. Which leads me to beleive she must have sync setup too. What a joke!!!!!
It would be so much easier if google mail would include the MS office option buttons for reading and responding to event emails.
Not only that, but now i have to create events either on the phone, or in google cal. I can not setup events in outlook and have them all sync UNLESS i pay and use google apps.
Google has a big problem with MS. If i send an event to a google account, if i read that event email in gmail, its also striped of any way to open or respond.
The way this works best if WANTING to use gmail and outlook, while still wanting to use outlook for events cal, is to only reply, respond or accept events within outlook on the pc.

You have to ONLY select Contacts, Calendar and Mail. Try that and let me know if you still get that Att Required... Also, if all else fails I can give you my email and we can test it that way.
I'm using Gmail Exchange ActiveSync and the HTC Mail App, because:
1. The Gmail App seems to be either Push Mail (Constant) or Manual (Menu --> Refresh), whereas I'd prefer it to check for me once an hour.
2. I dislike the Gmail interface
But when I click "Refresh", mail I've deleted via IMAP in Outlook or the Webmail doesn't disappear. It does download new mail though. This link:

Refers to using Gmail Exchange ActiveSync on the iPhone, says:
"* To delete a message, move it to the [Gmail]/Trash folder.
* To archive a message, delete it from the Inbox or move it to [Gmail]/All Mail."
I don't mind if pressing DELETE Archives or Deletes the message but surely this isn't correct? Both the Gmail App and IMAP delete mail when you click "Refresh" (that have been deleted elsewhere). I shouldn't have to "Manually" delete mail, I've already deleted elsewhere.
Surely this does too?

It's suddenly starting working. I must say Sync using Exchange ActiveSync is very hit and miss!
Last night I was finding it was trying to Sync (the white sync circle) for 5-10 minutes+, despite using Wireless and it only having to update 1-2 e-mail differences. I gave up in the end .
It's now not downloading mail in folders other than the Inbox!
I've had to move mail out, refresh, move it back in and then refresh again, it then downloads the mail but this is tricky to do for Sent Items. If it's still playing up tomorrow, I think I'll switch to IMAP. What a mess:
1. Google Sync: Has no ability to say how often it downloads mail. You either have to accept "Push Mail" (and the extra battery it needs) or Manually click Refresh
2. Gmail Exchange ActiveSync: Is proving very unreliable
Annoyingly IMAP doesn't offer Contacts/Calendar Sync, so I'll still have use one of the above methods for these two. Probably Google Sync, as Exchange ActiveSync will create a redundant Mailbox. Hopefully only Real-time Syncing Calendar/Contacts won't have too much draw on battery. I'm pretty sure it's the Mail part that does this.
Now it won't download anything in my Sent Items and instead just re-downloads the same e-mail, that isn't even in Sent Items any more!
IMO Gmail's (Beta) Exchange ActiveSync is well and truly broken! I'm off to re-configure (for the more basic but reliable) IMAP.

IMAP is so much more reliable than Exchange ActiveSync. It's annoying it doesn't sync Calendar/Contacts too though.
I'm using Google Sync for those two, hopefully battery won't be hammered too much. I'm pretty sure it's E-Mail (not Calendar/Contacts) that does this, when Push is enabled.
Something I noticed...I set my gmail to sync hourly but it does not do that at all. Both my hotmail accounts will sync hourly but whenever I go to my gmail app, the longest time before another sync was like 22 mins. I emailed myself something through gmail once and although my sync settings were still set at hourly, I got the email 10 minutes later. Idk what's going on with that. I just now put it on manually because I'm pretty sure its turning on my 3G more times than it should.

Anyhow, I have my gmail sync every 15min and think it's pretty accurate...
I actually have several gmail accounts and they sync at various times with my main personal account syncing every 15min... And it all seems fine...

He probably means the Gmail email app you get once you configure a Gmail account on your WP7.
slightly different problem with gmail sync
Hey everybody,
I'm wondering if anybody else is having the same problem as me at the moment ?
I've had the phone a few months now. I experienced a few issues with Hotmail and returned to using Gmail. It used to sync and push emails flawlessly, however it seems to have stopped working which is driving me mad.
When I wake up, i'm used to seeing new messages waiting for me (mainly XDA forum news). However, the push functionality has stopped working. I open my inbox, and see a message indicating email is up to date. However, no new messages are displayed. When pushing the sync button, the inbox is synced and the new messages are displayed, despite the settings set for "as items arrive". Highly annoying and not very productive to have to check for messages manually.
I played around with the settings trying various options, I even deleted the account and started over again (which was a pain re linking contacts etc, all to no avail.
Can anybody help me to restore my push email please ? I'm getting really cheesed off now.

Could it be possible that your phone had synced with G-mail 50 minutes before you sent yourself an email, and then you received it 10 minutes later, after the scheduled hour?

go to email account settings and check if it is showing any errors. happened to me once. I re-entered my username passoword and the error went away. Perhaps this is due to Google getting very picky these days as many gmail accounts are getting hacked.
Why not just leave it in 'push' mode? Unless you have a lot of emails every hour, push email uses less data than polling. Gmail's exchange activesync isn't exactly rock solid. Back in WM 6.xx days, I have to reset my account every few weeks.
I am getting duplicate entries in the calendar from my exchange accounts. Is this a known problem and is there a fix?
I have tried deleting the calendar storage and removing then re adding the accounts.

I had that problem once before on my old epic. If I remember correctly it was because I had 2 accounts synced to my phone, Google and Yahoo? Now I just sync everything to Google only. I was also getting duplicated in contacts.

I think it is a problem with the S3 calendar app or the exchange sync. I have synced the same accounts on other android phones and have not had any issues with duplicate calendar entries. I sync my work exchange account and a hotmail account. This gives me my work and personal calendars. I only sync contacts from my hotmail account. I do not want to use google since I already have everything setup on my other accounts.
I will try doing some reconfiguring of the accounts tonight. I will post an update if I find anything interesting.
Re-Duplicate Calendar/Contacts entries from Exchange Server
Last week my S3 started duplicating both calendar and contact entries. This only occurs on my Exchange work email. I can clear out my contact and calendar storage and then resynch and it will be fine for a few hours. Then i will get duplicate entries. I did not reset my storage after seeing the duplicates today and now a third set of the same entries are showing up. Very frustrating. I have uninstalled the apps I've loaded in the last week.
I was rooted and had not downloaded any upgrades when this started. Yesterday I went back to the stock rom thinking that was the problem. It is still happening after I reset to stock ROM and downloaded the available upgrades.
This is very frustrating and it is odd that this started recently. Maybe something changed with corporate exchange servers in the last couple of weeks that caused this conflict.
Looking forward to a resolution.
I have the same problem. Now I have 8 times every contact and calendar entry. When I delete the account is working for some hours and then start dublicating as well. I have 2 exchange accounts, my corporate that I sync everything and my hotmail that sync only email.
I now only have one exchange calendar syncing and I am still getting duplicates. I have tried to reproduce the duplication by restarting and re-syncing but neither one created duplicates manually. Next I am going to remove all of my accounts, delete all the calendar & contact storage then add back one account. I will run wiht only the one account for a day to see what happens

4. Setup synch for Gmail using the Google Account
5. Setup Hotmail with the Hotmail app.
(Dont like Gmail and Hotmail separated, because I enjoyed having all emails in a combined view)

I'm going to try this method and see if it works out. I too, had 2 Exchange ActiveSync email accounts associated with my stock email client (Corporate and Hotmail) But I'm going to try and set up the Hotmail account as a POP3 this time and see if that alleviates the multiple calendar entry catastrophe!
I made some progress in my testing. Here is what I did.
First test
1. Removed all accounts using the default email client.
2. Cleared all data for calendar and contacts
3. Restarted phone
4. Only setup one account using exchange and synced mail, calendar and contacts using default email client
5. No duplicates after 3 days.
Second test
1. Removed all accounts using the default email client.
2. Cleared all data for calendar and contacts
3. Restarted phone
4. Setup two account using exchange and synced mail, calendar and contacts using default email client
5. After the first day I started getting duplicates in the calendar and contacts.
Third test
1. Removed all accounts using the default email client.
2. Cleared all data for calendar and contacts
3. Restarted phone
4. Setup one account using exchange and synced mail and calendar using default email
5. Setup one account using exchange and synced mail, calendar and contacts using Enhanced Email
6. After the first day I started getting duplicates in the calendar and contacts.

The duplicating calendar and contacts problem was driving me crazy as well. It just seemed to keep getting worse with more and more duplicates as time went by.
I could remove the duplicates by removing my Exchange account and then re-adding it back in, but the duplicates would show up again hours later.
I removed/added my exchange account a bunch of times, and each time the duplicates came back... except this last time.
The only thing I did different this last time (that I know of) was goto: Settings, then Backup and Reset, and uncheck "Back up my data". Then I removed/added Exchange.
Since doing this, I have had no more duplicating appointments or contacts. It has been several days, maybe a week now.

I will try that and see what happens over a few days.
Workaround: Google Calendar sync option
I had the same issue on my Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. I removed my Exchange Server account -> Synced calendar -> Made sure the Exchange entries were gone from Calendar -> Install Google Calendar Sync in your PC that has the exchange server and do the 1-way sync option from Exchange to Google -> Resync Google Calendar on phone -> Add Exchange Server account on phone.
This is a roundabout method to remove duplicate entries but it works great for me and should do so for you as well. There is a one-time setup of Google Calendar sync on your PC and that's about it.

Can you please point me to the difference in setting up via default email client vs setting it up using Enhanced Email?
My Father-in-law has his gmail account and a Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync account (for work) syncing on his GS3 and is getting duplicate events from the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync account. I'm trying to help him remove those duplicate entries. Apparently his IT guy at work setup the ActiveSync account and he didn't know how to set it up, so I couldn't remove and add it back.
I'm just not sure how I should tell him to set it up differently this time. Note: I saw the item to remove the check mark for backing up items. Did that work for you as well?
Solution I found that works for my HTC Android
opened my Droid's Calendar,
then touched Menu button,
then "More",
then unchecked the box next to Calendar,
and checked only the calendar I want to sync and show (Exchange)
waited for everything to clear itself out.
done / fixed.
Why I don't have Exchange on my droid?! I have the same problem: duplicate calendar entries. I simply use S2 (Jelly bean) and my default gmail account and its calendar! nothing more. but there are many duplicates. I can't see exchange in my calendar list
