Something I noticed...I set my gmail to sync hourly but it does not do that at all. Both my hotmail accounts will sync hourly but whenever I go to my gmail app, the longest time before another sync was like 22 mins. I emailed myself something through gmail once and although my sync settings were still set at hourly, I got the email 10 minutes later. Idk what's going on with that. I just now put it on manually because I'm pretty sure its turning on my 3G more times than it should.

gmail app?
Anyhow, I have my gmail sync every 15min and think it's pretty accurate...
I actually have several gmail accounts and they sync at various times with my main personal account syncing every 15min... And it all seems fine...

He probably means the Gmail email app you get once you configure a Gmail account on your WP7.
slightly different problem with gmail sync
Hey everybody,
I'm wondering if anybody else is having the same problem as me at the moment ?
I've had the phone a few months now. I experienced a few issues with Hotmail and returned to using Gmail. It used to sync and push emails flawlessly, however it seems to have stopped working which is driving me mad.
When I wake up, i'm used to seeing new messages waiting for me (mainly XDA forum news). However, the push functionality has stopped working. I open my inbox, and see a message indicating email is up to date. However, no new messages are displayed. When pushing the sync button, the inbox is synced and the new messages are displayed, despite the settings set for "as items arrive". Highly annoying and not very productive to have to check for messages manually.
I played around with the settings trying various options, I even deleted the account and started over again (which was a pain re linking contacts etc, all to no avail.
Can anybody help me to restore my push email please ? I'm getting really cheesed off now.
Thanks
Garrickus.
Could it be possible that your phone had synced with G-mail 50 minutes before you sent yourself an email, and then you received it 10 minutes later, after the scheduled hour?
BUMP
go to email account settings and check if it is showing any errors. happened to me once. I re-entered my username passoword and the error went away. Perhaps this is due to Google getting very picky these days as many gmail accounts are getting hacked.
Why not just leave it in 'push' mode? Unless you have a lot of emails every hour, push email uses less data than polling. Gmail's exchange activesync isn't exactly rock solid. Back in WM 6.xx days, I have to reset my account every few weeks.

i'm trying to sync. only contacts and email sync..looking for calendar sync.
mine wont even do contacts just email.
Mine syncs just fine with calendar and email. Not sure about contacts. I leave that Microsoft MyPhone.
Anyway, I would suggest you to delete the Exchange relationship and start over. Sometimes that helps.
i've done that many times, no luck, does that work for u havieri23?
yes, i deleted the exchange, but only still can do contacts and email...would like to get calendar working.
i used this link for setup help http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299
but instead of user name: [email protected] which doesn't connect for me (gives error) i use [email protected]
Assume you've all followed the instructions to the word? Remembered to toggle on "Calendar" as well as "Contacts" and "Emails"?
yes i definitely have the boxes checked, they give me an error when i try to sync, and they never end up actually sync'ing. i have it setup exatly as the instructions say.
even if i set it just contacts, doesnt work, just calender, nope. just email, works fine xD
EDIT:
so.. i realized that i hadnt updated my sync times to instant, which i did, which resulted in calender syncing
heres the problem, i think google sync only allows up to 100 contacts to be synced. so if you have more, you'll get an error. i myself have 114, so i cant do it. too bad
is that true about contact limit?
is it true that the limit for the number of contacts that can be synced with Google contacts is 100? I would like to start using that sync but I have about 350 contacts.
hope this helps
I was reading this thread cause I just took on gmail as well for everything. So far I have had everything work except task, but they do say it doesn't work.
My settings for email is set to come as they arrive (both peak and off peak hours)
I have 320 contacts, all synced (and quickly I might add) i just had to sync twice for it to work.
server was m.google.com
username was [email protected]
domain was left blank and I have contacts, email, calender checked and tasks not checked (checking it cause an error with syncing)
My calender updated a test event for me... then while i had gmail open i moved the event from 2pm to 6pm by dragging it and as i was looking at my phone agenda on touchflo so the calender tab... it refreshed on its own moving the event to 6pm without me click one thing.
If i can help any other way.... in case this may help set up the server thru activesync and not thru mail setup.
it helped a lot
now clouds have dispersed.
Can someone help me here please?
I have Exchange set up on my Desire. Occasionally, the last day or so's emails will not show on the phone under the inbox. They are there on the PC which is also on exchange but not the phone!
If I move the lost emails using the pc to a subfolder then back to the inbox and then resync the phone, the emails reappear on the phone's email app!
Any clues about what is going on here?
Ed
p.s. I use 4smartphone's exchange service
Are you sure none of the clients are removing the mail from the server after reading?
We have been having this problem in our office as well, without the use of phones. Some computers see all emails and others tend to make a selection. Really really annoying.
Couldn't figure it out.
I was getting this the first few days that I had the phone, in desperation I deleted the account each time and added it again. I think I did this three times in all, but I've not had it happen for sometime now. It's my own Exchange server running Exchange 2007 - I couldn't find anything in the logs to indicate a problem, and as it's not happened since I not bothered to look any further.
My wife's phone has done it a couple of times. Mine never has. We both use Activesync against my own 2010 Exchange server.
Deleting the account and re-adding seems to sort it, but is a pain. The mails are definitely there on the Exchange side. The mails seem to appear initially on the phone and then some time after (during another sync) disappear completely from the phone.

You mention you are syncing with an Exchange 2010 server. Does your Calendar also get synced?
What makes it really weird is that touchdown running on the phone doesnt bugger it up! I may email HTC just to get really annoyed and fobbed off by them....

Yep - the Calendar syncs.
Unfortunately the Desire doesn't support stuff like setting appointments to free/busy/out of office and if you create a repeated appointment on the phone you can't set an end date.
These are issues with the phone as a whole though, not just Exchange 2010.
When I get mail its taking long periods of time (2 + hours) before the phone syncs and alerts me. Should this not be instant? If I perform a manual sync mail always comes in at that point.
Im using the built in gmail app (not mail). Background data, and Auto sync are checked. Sync Calendar/contacts/Gmail are checked. Gmail account does have IMAP and POP enabled, I had no issue with instant email sync with the PRE.
Is there a setting im missing? I really need email to be more instant than hours.
There are several of us that are having this problem today...If your phone just started doing this today it's likely that this is a problem with a gmail server somewhere.
Mine's been working fine lately. Is your Gmail set to sync as mail arrives, or is it timed?

This has been an issue since I got the device, mail delivery has always been very delayed.

Maybe I'm slow but where is this setting?
Am I the only one who's disenchanted with the Gmail app on Android? I was hoping it would be better with my Nexus, but nothing has changed.
It doesn't seem like true push. If I set Gmail up as an exchange account in the mail app, it receives my e-mail and notifies me within seconds of sending a test message. The Gmail app randomly notifies me within about 15 minutes or so. Call me anal, but I like to receive my e-mail as soon as possible (sometimes it's important) and I don't see why there's a delay on the official Gmail app.
I know this has been an ongoing issue for some time with Android and my co-worker claims that he's perfectly happy just using the Gmail app, but my experience is that the Email client receives e-mail faster and that's important to me.
I've been using the gmail app for a while on 4 different devices (N1,G2,Sensation,GNex), and I've never noticed more than a couple second lag receiving emails. I have noticed something since 4.0.4 or possibly the latest gmail update. When I mark an email as read on my computer, the notification no longer clears itself on my phone. I have to manually clear it.
It can be strange, and in some cases frustrating. More often than not, my emails come really quick (as they should). There has been a few occurances where an email was delayed by several hours.
And it does seem as though the mail app works better than the gmail app for push email.
Edit: I only use the gmail app, but have used the mail app in the past.
Never had more than a 30 second delay personally.
See, my co-worker swears he doesn't notice a delay either, but I have tested it over and over. When I have notifications on for both the default e-mail client and Gmail, I will get a notification immediately from the e-mail client and nothing from Gmail. More troubling, when I open Gmail, the e-mail is not there yet. It's like it's on periodic check, instead of push.
Currently, I have notifications turned off for the Gmail app and use it to sync everything, then have Gmail set up as an exchange account and only have it pulling in e-mail (no contacts or calendar). It still seems a tad redundant, but its' the only way to ensure that I get my e-mail reliably.
I've not noticed any delay with using the app.

No delays here either. I relay email from POP3 accounts to Gmail for the push functionality and it works flawlessly.
All good here too. Matches my desktop Gmail timing. Btw I love the Gmail app its the best damn email experience I've ever seen on a phone, I use it constantly.
I can't be the only one having this issue. Is it possible that no one here knows any different simply because they haven't tried it as an exchange account through the regular e-mail app? Again, I have had this issue on pretty much every Android phone I have owned. And I can duplicate it any time.
Would anyone care to add Gmail as an Exchange account through the e-mail app and then send themselves a test message? Let me know if you get it in both apps around the same time. In my case, it shows up instantly in the e-mail app and won't show up for several minutes in the Gmail app unless I push the sync button manually.
i've noticed delays too. really frustrating because i have no idea what can be done about it...

Nothing that I know of, because it only seems to affect a small percentage of users. I can find a few posts on the internet with other users complaining about the same issue, but most people who reply say they have no problem (just like this post). It makes me wonder if I created a completely new Gmail account and tied it to my phone, if I'd get e-mail instantly on that account.
Unfortunately, that's not an option. I've had this address for years.
How long is your delay, less than a minute? I send myself a test email from my corp work email and it comes thru in less than a minute.

The delay varies. Sometimes it's instant, other times it's anywhere from a 5-15 minute delay. I always get the e-mails instantly in the e-mail app when Gmail is set up as an exchange account.
The moral of the story is, it's not reliable. I can never count on getting my e-mail in a timely manner in the Gmail app.
Sign in to the Google Talk application and make sure you're always signed in. I believe that the gTalk-connection is used for push-messages, so if you're signed in into gTalk, push should work.
I also had the delay once, after I restored a backup of the gmail data after a factory reset(actually, yakjuxw -> yakju). I deleted the gmail data and re-configured it. That fixed the problem for me.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I have the gmail issue (won't ever recieve push email...have to manually sync) AND I cannot sign into GTalk from my phone.
I wish I could fix.
Sorry to revive a dead thread, but was there ever a resolution to this? I'm having the exact same problem on my HTC One X (AT&T).
Gmail or Gtalk delays are due to router (firewall issues). Just forward the necessary Google ports, and you'll be good to go.

I am struggling with this issue as well
Me too, lately it's been brutal for me
Stock ROM, Gmail stopped syncing. No more email comes in unless I manually go and hit refresh in the Gmail app, or go to settings and force sync it. This just started happening. Have the phone for almost a month without any issues, then as of say an hour ago, it just stopped syncing emails. No error messages in the sync menu. Normally if there is an issue with sync, there is a red exclamation mark stating an issue, but there isn't any. It just shows that Gmail was last synced at the last time I manually synced it.
Any thoughts?
Upon further testing, I see that Gmail does have an active connection to the server. If I mark an email unread in Gmail, it immediately reflects on the Gmail client in the Note II. If I send a test email, my Gmail.com shows the new email, but the Note II Gmail app does not until I manually sync it. It's very weird.
Clear data. Should work.
also you might try opening up your settings in gmail, and go through those settings. There is an option there to have gmail sync on or off. I was going to suggest clear data in the gmail app, but that already been suggested.
I used to have this problem frequently on my last phone. I never found a permanent fix but did notice that somehow the settings in gmail would change by themselves and gmail sync on/off was one of them as well as the one where you can decide to let it notify you for every email or just once for the initial email.

+1 -- usually fixes issues.
