Stock ROM, Gmail stopped syncing. No more email comes in unless I manually go and hit refresh in the Gmail app, or go to settings and force sync it. This just started happening. Have the phone for almost a month without any issues, then as of say an hour ago, it just stopped syncing emails. No error messages in the sync menu. Normally if there is an issue with sync, there is a red exclamation mark stating an issue, but there isn't any. It just shows that Gmail was last synced at the last time I manually synced it.
Any thoughts?
Upon further testing, I see that Gmail does have an active connection to the server. If I mark an email unread in Gmail, it immediately reflects on the Gmail client in the Note II. If I send a test email, my Gmail.com shows the new email, but the Note II Gmail app does not until I manually sync it. It's very weird.
Clear data. Should work.
also you might try opening up your settings in gmail, and go through those settings. There is an option there to have gmail sync on or off. I was going to suggest clear data in the gmail app, but that already been suggested.
I used to have this problem frequently on my last phone. I never found a permanent fix but did notice that somehow the settings in gmail would change by themselves and gmail sync on/off was one of them as well as the one where you can decide to let it notify you for every email or just once for the initial email.

I want to try using the Mail app instead of the GMail one, but is it actually possible to disable the GMail app without losing all the other functionality you get from logging into your Google account? - there seems to be a unified log in used by GMaps as well, for example. And when I try to remove the account in settings, it says I have to do a factory reset, this seems bonkers to me.
I couldn't manage to get my Google Mail account to sign into the Mail app...

Turn off sync for Gmail under Settings->Accounts & sync.
You might also want to switch of notifications in the Gmail app too.
Regards,
Dave
Will the phone sync google mail contacts via imap on the mail app or do I need to stick to the gmail app for that?

I think you must have a different version from mine. I have
Settings - Accounts& Sync
Background Data (tickbox)
AutoSync (tickbox)
Manage Accounts
Google
Stocks
Weather
If I tick Google I get a new screen:
Sync calendar
Sync contacts
Sync Google Mail
Sync Picassa Web Albums
(These all just trigger a sync)
At the bottom there are 2 buttons, Sync Now and Remove Account.
If I try remove account a box pops up warning that it will delete all the data, I say OK, then another box that says it can't do it, I have to factory reset because it is required by some applications.
I have been using the Google Mail app since I've had my phone, but today came across a problem - I could not copy & paste a tracking # from an email. I then quickly set up my gmail in the Mail app, & was able to perform this action very easily.
So my question is: has anyone used both apps extensively, & could they give me a quick "pro's & cons"?

Here you go someone has already done that:

The only thing that really annoys me is the fact that your Mail widget does not update the list of emails unless you open the Mail application.
Even if you already updated the email list in your GMail appl.
For example: I receive an email. I get a notification in the notification bar. I open it and it takes me to the Gmail appl (by default). I check my emails, read them, exit the application.
However, my HTCMail Widget (sitting on the desktop) does not show any updates. I have to open the HTCMail manually, sync (again!) and only then can I see the updated list.
Aaaargh!
I've been tempted to move to using the mail application over the gmail one as well.
I think ill setup the mail application with my other gmail account then compare the 2
I much prefer the gmail app. I think its quicker and easier to reply, and it syncs straight away unlike the mail app.
Only downside is the lack of widget, but with the number of apps I have on my homescreens, this isn't an issue.
I always feel it's worth mentioning k9mail at this point, if only because it supports IMAP IDLE.
Hey there
I have a rather annoying issue since I switched to froyo (proper OTA) with my gmail app:
it does not auto-sync, nor tell me instantly when a new mail arrives. Actually, it only tells me, when I manually sync the accounts.
I reckon to have set it up the right way*, rebooted the device, deleted and re-added the accounts, but still no notifications when I receive mails.
Yet, is there maybe any point I missed?
Thanks
*Application's allowed to sync data all the time; allowed to sync automatically; accounts set to sync their mail
Do you have more than one Google account set up on the phone?
If so, this is a known issue
Something I noticed...I set my gmail to sync hourly but it does not do that at all. Both my hotmail accounts will sync hourly but whenever I go to my gmail app, the longest time before another sync was like 22 mins. I emailed myself something through gmail once and although my sync settings were still set at hourly, I got the email 10 minutes later. Idk what's going on with that. I just now put it on manually because I'm pretty sure its turning on my 3G more times than it should.

Anyhow, I have my gmail sync every 15min and think it's pretty accurate...
I actually have several gmail accounts and they sync at various times with my main personal account syncing every 15min... And it all seems fine...

He probably means the Gmail email app you get once you configure a Gmail account on your WP7.
slightly different problem with gmail sync
Hey everybody,
I'm wondering if anybody else is having the same problem as me at the moment ?
I've had the phone a few months now. I experienced a few issues with Hotmail and returned to using Gmail. It used to sync and push emails flawlessly, however it seems to have stopped working which is driving me mad.
When I wake up, i'm used to seeing new messages waiting for me (mainly XDA forum news). However, the push functionality has stopped working. I open my inbox, and see a message indicating email is up to date. However, no new messages are displayed. When pushing the sync button, the inbox is synced and the new messages are displayed, despite the settings set for "as items arrive". Highly annoying and not very productive to have to check for messages manually.
I played around with the settings trying various options, I even deleted the account and started over again (which was a pain re linking contacts etc, all to no avail.
Can anybody help me to restore my push email please ? I'm getting really cheesed off now.
Thanks
Garrickus.
Could it be possible that your phone had synced with G-mail 50 minutes before you sent yourself an email, and then you received it 10 minutes later, after the scheduled hour?
BUMP
go to email account settings and check if it is showing any errors. happened to me once. I re-entered my username passoword and the error went away. Perhaps this is due to Google getting very picky these days as many gmail accounts are getting hacked.
Why not just leave it in 'push' mode? Unless you have a lot of emails every hour, push email uses less data than polling. Gmail's exchange activesync isn't exactly rock solid. Back in WM 6.xx days, I have to reset my account every few weeks.
Hello,
I updated my Sprint Galaxy S III (SPH-L710) to CyanogenMod 10.2 yesterday.
I flashed the latest gapps, and I updated my gmail apps to the latest one on the play store (4.7.1).
However, when I receive emails I don't get any notifications. However I still receive emails, and if I press refresh, then I got notifications.
I read lots of posts about it, but most of them told to check synchronization. Which I did.....everywhere.
I went to Account -> Google and checked GMail.
I went to Data Usage -> Menu and checked Auto-sync data
I went to GMail apps -> Settings and checked Sync GMail
I went to GMail apps -> ... @gmail.com settings and checked label notifications and set ringtones
I checked that gmail was not checked in Privacy Guard, and that the app was allowed to push notifications.
I tried to revert to gmail apps 4.5, clear data, remove google accounts and add it again, reboot the phone, re-update the gmail apps.
I tried from WiFi and 4G.
Nothing worked.
I don't feel like it's a sync issue, as I well received email (even if it's not instant).
I did a fresh install of CM 10.2 (stable), wiped cache and everything (I had stock ROM before).
I also think I do not receive facebook notifications.
Does these applications need to run in the background to get notifications ? Because when I come back to desktop after checking mails for example and goes to Manage Apps -> Running, GMail is not in there.
Thank you.
Edit: Could it be an issue with GCM ?
Edit: At some points I received notification (30min after I sent the test email).
A question is, how does gmail app works ? Is it synchronizing and emitting notification if new messages, or the other way around, if receiving new messages, emit a notification and synchronize ?
To test GCM, I downloaded Push Notification Test, and I can trigger the notification (step 3), but the system never receive it.
However I'm not sure why. Is there a way to restart gcm ? (I already tried to reboot, but it doesn't change anything.
I tested to disable profiles, just in case one of the profile overrides notifications. No luck.
It seems I sometimes receive notifications but sometimes after a long time after I receive the email.
Did anyone already got this kind of issue ?

Your not alone. The one thing i loved about the GMAIL app was the instant email notifications.
Now it takes hours (if it all) to notify me of an email since the update of 4.7.1.
Really would like a fix too (using a Galaxy Note 3)
EDIT: Seems to be working for me now. I updated all google apps on the phone, and in chrome i was logged in under another email, and relogged into mine. Then i tested it and appears to be working for now.
Hope this helps

In the changelog of 4.7.1 they said they fixed the sync, but I'm not sure it's completely fixed.
All my apps are up-to-date on my phone, and I don't have chrome. I'm never logged on my gmail with my browser and I don't have other gmail address.
That's annoying.
But I think I don't receive FB notifications either. I think it's more an issue in the CM. Do you use Cyanogen too ?

The problem is happening to me again. Its only since the update a few days ago which is really annoying. I am using stock so shouldn't be your mod. I had no sync problems before the update, but now the inbuilt email app beats the gmail app every time, to the point the gmail app doesnt even send notifications anymore.
Im at a loss as to what to do

As for me, I'm not sure this is the app, because as I said I also don't receive FB notifications.
And I also tried with gmail 4.5 and it didn't work either. After I revert to 4.5, I sent myself a test email, and I got the notification immediately, but after that, I sent other email, and this time I got no notifications anymore.
Hello,
I have a note 3 and galaxy gear. After updating to kitkat I have this problem with the phone constantly notifying me of new emails, even though I have already acknowledged the email. Prior to updating, I was able to swipe the new email notification and It would not renotify me until a new email was received, now after about every 15 mins I get a notification to my phone and my gear saying there is a new email even though its the same email as before.
The only way to stop my phone from renotifying me is to delete the email completely. I have ensured that Gmail notifactions are off, and am only using the email samsung app.
This was working fine before but now I am going crazy and not even wearing my watch because it is so damn annoying.

update.
I have removed the gmail account from the 'accounts' area of settings and re added it. I am still getting a notice of new emails every 15 mins (the sync setting) regardless of having a new email or not.
I cannot find anyone else having this issue... and i have 5 email accounts tied to this phone, and only the primary/default account is having this persistent notification issue.
Any ideas?

I have also cleared all data and cache for the email app.... as soon as I add my gmail account it starts notifying me every sync of the first email in my inbox.
I guess I am going to go to tmobile and get a new phone unless anyone has any other ideas.

I checked my gmail settings from a computer, and it shows IMAP and POP enabled.
For some odd reason it appears the issue may have been resolved, and I have not modified anything since again deleting the data/cache.
Should POP be disabled and only IMAP enabled? the phone is set up to utilize IMAP not POP.

Your phone had a hiccup. Not a hardware issue. It happened from time to time. It self fixed itself when it got caught up.
