Hi All,
Sorry i have a slightly noobish question.
is the moto defy hardware capable of running android 2.3 gingerbread ?
regards
Ani
I have an old HTC Hero that has lower hardware than Defy and it handles GB just fine. Custom made GB that is, as the last update HTC did for Hero was Eclair(2.1). The problem with Defy is the bootloader if Motorola won't upgrade Defy to GB.
Ofcourse it's capable of running 2.3 but it's going to take about a year from now lol because there are still 4-5 months before 2.2 comes out...and btw Optimus one is getting 2.3 (slower then defy) so ofcourse defy can get 2.3
Gingerbread 2.3
Defy is fully capable of running GB. You can easily overclock it upto 1.2 ghz. Has plenty of RAM and space like other high end smartpohones.
And so far the leaked version of Froyo 3.4.2 is fairly snappy, fast and pleasure to use. The biggest problem is that motorola won't make any GB ROM for Defy, so we have to wait for some moded ROMs.
Defy has the potential to 2.3, yes ... but this will probably take us a time.
EDIT: Yes, Motorola is "very close" in this area
Sorry for my english...
The HTC Dream is capable of running Gingerbread and it's not crawling, nuff said.
Any maker who tells you that its phones aren't capable is probably not because of the hardware.
Is there any chance that we could get official 2.3 gingerbread ? I would not like to use any custom ROM's coz' Im bit newbie with android....
^ no Motorola releases new phone and Defy will not get official 2.3
If LG P500 can handle GB, Why not DEFY and Spec wise Defy is far better than P500

We may not get it officially but the leaked Gingerbread firmwares for The Defy+ work perfectly on the original defy(red lens). I'm currently on it as the matter of fact.

I use to have an old HTC TyTn II (aka HTC Kaiser) which has 400mhz and 256 mb RAM (i think) running windows mobile 6.1 officially... it was possible to install CM7 (Android 2.3) ROM on it and it ran quite OK!!! Not much of a lag, i used it as my day to day ROM for some months after finally getting a new phone.
So i guess you can say that the Defy DEFINITELY has the hardware for 2.3 maybe even honeycomb and ice cream sandwich (if a port was ever possible)

if you happen to have the green lense, it works great as well. i am on green lense with the leaked 134 gb supposedly for mb526. easiest way to know is to flash the leaked gb, and if camera doesnt work then you are on green lense. if you are, use the greenbread patch to enable camera (you will lose the live wallpaper function). the best gb so far for me is the leaked 134, very stable with magnificent battery life.
Motorola DEFY has a 1GHz TI 3630 chipset on it. but it will be functional if u install a 2.3 version. i have tried it, it works. because TI(Texas Instruments) doesn't produce a 800MHz 3610 chipset. that chipset doesn't even exist. the DEFY with the stock rom uses a downgraded 1GHz 3630 chipset. DEFY is very powerful... I don't even think of buying a DEFY+
The only problem to defy was the Gingerbread rom itself. But now we have some good gb roms that works very nicelly!

I'm asking this because i heard on other forums and also saw it on youtube that some people who got 2.2 update on defy (o2 germany i believe), some of them have 1ghz cpu on stock...so if someone can confirm this if o2 2.2 update actualyl increases the clock speed to 1ghz?
no reply? does anyone even know anything about it?
Feel free to read the Android dev forum. Instructions on there to flash your phone and up your clockspeed, at your own risk! People already running at 1.2 ghz.
2 separate things:
1 . You can have 2.2 on the Defy via leaked ROM => see Defy dev section
2. You can very easely overclock your Defy to 1Ghz => read the forum
This 2 things are not related, 2.2 ROM are not the cause of the overclocking. Overclocking is an user settings
I've seen that there's Gingerbread for Milestone that, just as Defty, has that nasty bootloader. Can Gingerbread ever come to Defy?

I join the question...
i'm using one of the leaked versions and it's working pretty well ...
Actually many reported the leaked Chinese Froyo was default to 1ghz.

Not as long as the bootloader remains locked. One of several things needs to happen: Moto releases a Gingerbread for Defy (or it's leaked), the bootloader is cracked, or a new bootloader that is not locked is released.

Well, if yur queston is thatDefy will be able to hanle Gingerbread then:
http://androidcommunity.com/lg-optimus-one-series-will-receive-android-2-3-20101209/
LG optimus one is getting 2.3 update ad it has half the performance compared to Defy, so yes. BUT as you can see Motorola is takingAges just to release 2.2 for Defy, i doubt they'll release 2.3 and that might be when the Defy would be quite old so i really doubt it.
I wonder which cellphone gets HoneyComb (3.0) pre installed xD

That's got nothing to do with whether or not the Defy actually gets Gingerbread though.
It all comes down to the choices made by individual manufacturers, not the relative specs of various handsets.

Google have stated that Honeycomb is for tablets, not phones.
Then again, Froyo supposedly isn't for tablets but that hasn't stopped companies releasing ones running it, so who knows.
Certainly the proper dual-core utilisation that Honeycomb will bring would be useful for the likes of the Optimus 2X or the Atrix, so there'd be some motivation for manufacturers to use it.
But, at the same time, I have no doubt that Google will release a handset-oriented version of Android that will add features like that.

You just repeated what i said by proving me wrong lol. Read what i actually wrote.
I said that performance wise, yes defy can handle 2.3 BUT when it's taking ages just to release 2.2, what do you guess about 2.3 comming to defy and we actually don't know if they plan to do that or not. That is motorola's choice
I understand that you said it can handle it but linking to an article about LG is a waste of time, it has nothing to do with the Defy in the slightest.
All you're doing is confusing matters.
Hello all.
My free defy turns up tomorrow.
Hope cm7 is at the same level as it is with the SGS.
I'm sure you will all be seeing me lurking around the forums.
Sent from my phone
@iammodo I don't know at which level in CM7 for SGS, but for Defy it's pretty close to perfection (except few minor bugs). You can start by reading the development or the faq thread.
yeah..CM7 final is on the way, just wait for few bugs fixed.
From what i hear, cm7 on defy is better than on many other devices, including some officially supported ones.
Might give stock a chance.
samsung really smegged up on stock rom.

If you want to give stock a chance, you should at least try the stock 2.3.4 (leaked of course)

Yes, 2.3.4 leaked is awesome!
Despite the ultra-bright softkeys ( and data disabled icon which is fixed in the status bar ), it's worth giving a try .
I've done some mess and i had to downgrade to froyo, and so i couldn't avoid installing CM7 RC1 which is really great.
And, of course, I suggest anyone installing CM7 ( on Defy )!
Luckly I have my SGS and Xoom to use while getting my defy how I like it.
Seems lots of fun flashing.
Hopes its a simple as Xoom or SGS.
Find htc's rather annoying with their ruu.exe update applications.

Yay got the phone before work. No orange logo on the back.
Orange branded software 2.2.2 not to much bloat ware.
Rather happy

Something to check also is the camera module in your defy: BAYER (red one, the newer) or SOC (green one, older). I just received my defy 2 days ago, but unfortunately got the old SOC green camera. :-( From what I gathered here, it means that leaked 2.3 roms are a no-no (camera will not function), and 720p mods will not work either. Not sure the SOC camera is intrinsically worse than the BAYER one, but it is not as well supported (not part of the new leaked rom, probably because defy "replacement" always use a BAYER).
Mines red.
But haven't checked the logcat to double check yet.

They released defy+ with android 2.3.3. (latest Leaked was 2.3.4) I think with greenbreadmod we can use all defy+ roms on green lens defys.
Android 2.3.3. can rooted direct.

AFAIK, It is not possible until the bootloader is unlocked (I wonder why they want to complicate things for themselves ). Again, from what I have seen here (after a long gap of inactivity ) greenbreadmod is not fully compatible with CM7 (if that's what you are talking about, and I don't know about nightlies. The RC1, which my friend has doesn't seem to have it). So, even if defy+ roms are ported somehow, onto defy, those with green-lens have to wait till someone gets the mod up and running on CM7... or Motorola themselves upgrade defy to gingerbread (which is possibly not happening, cuz defy+'s sole marketing vantage point lies on 'gingerbread').
Hope I have answered your question...
who said anything about cm7? we were talking about using the stock gb mb526 rom on a green lens mb525.

Not really. I think the average everyday Joe would see 1GHZ over 800MHZ as the selling point. GB would be secondary if at all. People I talk to are more concerned about speed than what OS it's running. IMO

Is there any source for Defy+ having Bayer camera? I'm starting to wonder if Defy+ will be like regular Defy, meaning that some phones will come with SOC and some with Bayer if at all. Recently manufactured Defy phones come with SOC only after all.

The leaked roms are the proof: they support only Bayer...so it is highly probable that defy+ will use only bayer. The fact that all the new defy comes with SOC is maybe because moto is clearing its stock of soc modules (and 1500 mAh batteries). When it is done, no more defy will be produced...or, instead, only defy with bayer will be produced, but flashed with new gingerbread rom and sold as defy+ (which is imho the defy with a bayer cam, a new supplier for oem battery, and the use of a different colored plastic in the same injection molding lines for the frame. I am 90% sure bayer defy using a mugen equivalent battery IS the defy+. You'll know if I was right in Septembre, when first defy+ get dissassembled side by side with a defy ;-) )
I wonder if the new battery will fit the original defy.

hi guys, i currently own an ideos x5 and would like to buy a new defy+ but i have a major question.
Is there an overclocked kernel to flash without losing the stock rom or flashing a custom rom?
and what is the latest kernel for defy+, is it based on .35 or .32?

I shouldnt buy it... These are my reasons:
Motorola updates (I think we will not see official ICS in DEFY+)
Locked Bootloader = No "perfect" or "easy" ICS CyanogenMod 9
Motorola lied about it ( Its a defy with "stock" clock processor values.. )
It only can use signed kernels (by motorola --> bootloader locked)
About your questions... No.. overclocked kernel doesnt exists... Only motorola's kernel overclocked from bootmenu or setvsel. Kernel is .32 i think...
In my opinion... You should look for a samsung or Htc phone...
dissapointing...
There is a petition for unlocking the moto bootloaders.
Sign it and spread the word.
Still, if nothing happens, maybe get a sony xperia active. It has ip67 and hd recording and i think its a good alternative if you look for a strong smartphone
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Luckily the CyanogenMod developers are very strong so we will get ICS unofficially. But if you don't need the IP67 certified case I would buy a Nexus phone (the Nexus S isn't that expensive any more) or a Sony (Ericsson). The XPeria Neo or Ray are at the same price level than the Defy but will get ICS in the next months. And because Sony (Ericsson) supports CyanogenMod all devices got CyanogenMod 7.
I would get something with 4" screen and unlocked bootloader. Other then that its just not worthed....
LG 2x come to my mind right now... or something similar.. for a long term...
So let me get this straight, the defy+ cannot be rooted at all??? I had a defy and I loved it tbh. I liked the small size and it did everything I wanted it to do. Mind you, it is still an excellent phone. Can be overclocked to 1.3GHz even without an unlocked bootloader and custom kernels. Also it is a very safe phone to play around with, physically cos of its relative ruggedness, and software wise because the locked bootloader means chances of bricking by doing something related to custom ROMs are nil.
I just have bought a Defy... should I have waited for the Defy+? Or Defy+ is not as good as de Vanilla one?
I would not buy another motorola defy by the locked bootloader, my next phone will have unlocked bootloader

Defy+ is great!
I'm also really satisfied with my Defy+. Rooted, MS2Ginger 2.1 with all patches (except the ones which have something to do with Blur), V6 Supercharger, now it is quite fast, good for playing around (testing different ROMs, nearly unbrickable) and really sturdy (even more with Otter Box Commuter Case). The size is also perfect.
May not be state-of-the-art hardware but has the potential to be a good phone even alongside the next generations of smartphones.
So basically i found this through the news on xda-dev main site :

Its how to port Jelly bean to your device, if someone could just do that, we would have jelly bean..right?
could someone with experiences please try it out? Would be kick-ass if it worked!:victory:
We don't have JB because the source hasn't been released; sure, someone can port a JB build to our device but since no drivers have been released it would be buggy as hell. What would be the point of having JB if it rendered your device unusable?
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda app-developers app
Simply put, the best luck the Vision/DZ/G2 has of getting JB is if there is an official Rom released for it (or released to hardware that is very very very similar to the phone's own hardware).
Thus why it took a while for any 'decent' ICS roms to show up on the DZ, and even then some stuff still doesn't work as well as gingerbread (i.e.: the camera and other hardware that HTC has not released the source for yet, or may never do so).
So it's going to be a while before you actually see an 'alpha' quality functioning JB rom for Vision/G2/DZ. Especially since HTC has no plans to release ICS for this phone, everything after gingerbread will most likely have to be reverse engineered.
If it was just easy as all that it would have been done already.

Turns out HTC's own staff are idiots, they're talking bout 512MB RAM or less will not get ICS. ROM wouldn't make much sense, since even the Desire-Z can have either 409MB /system or 549MB /system depending on which hboot used.
The DHD has 768 MB RAM, and the HTC blog already confirms that DHD will get it:
http://blog.htc.com/2012/03/ics/
detailed dates here : http://www.htc.com/www/help/android4faq/?cid=android4blog
July-August for the DHD, June-July for the Desire S
But I'm not sure how much of the hardware components in say the DHD is close to that of the Desire-Z so time will tell.
I guess the idea is the device would need enough ram to run smoothly with a stock ICS possibly Sense-Style and default launcher/etc without any sd-ext, ram tweaks, etc. Though I'm already running ICS on my G2 right now, just lacking a smoother camera functionality (in comparison to when on gingerbread), but can shoot pictures and record videos just fine (Can't think of anything else I'm missing exactly).
Jellybean, probably a long way off.
I disagree. By the time the JB source is out, the 3.0 kernel will be even better and a complete replacement for the 2.6 one we're using now. CM will update to 10 and so will the respective ICS roms we have right now.
The only obstacles would be ones related to project butter, but we need the source first in order to really tell.
I would expect beta quality JB roms by August, assuming the JB source is released in the next few weeks.
