Suggestions for a overheating phone plz

I have a cuzin of mines having overheating problems with his evo and I don't know what else to tell him to help...We have tried different roms, kernals, setcpu profiles, wiping everything...He still has this issue he dosen't have full protection plan from sprint (he messed up there I know) only the warranty...I can reroot his phone and send it away but I was wondering if there is a way around sending back...Thanks in advance for any help.
You could try running a different battery to see if the problem still exists.Ive had several in the past that start to constantly over heat right before they stop holding a charge.

Try turning off your radios, or just enable which ever you need to use. He may have too much stuff running which is putting a heavy load on the battery causing it to heat up.

Evo restarts

I've searched and searched here and elsewhere for an answer to this question but haven't found an answer.
My Evo restarts "randomly" from time to time. Usually it's in the middle of the night while on the charger. It has, however, restarted either during or after a phone call but that is far less frequent.
I'm new to Android but my Evo is hardware 004 and have the stock rom unrooted.
I've dropped my evo once our twice, mind you not big falls but falls none the less. Also, I'm using the sprint extended battery.
Only reason why I know it's restarting is because I can check the juice plotter graph and the uptime.
Also since I've seen this question in other threads, no task killer but I'm using watchdog with just alerts you if something is going wonky
Is this an issue with the Evo, or should I be worried that it was dropped at all? Hope it's just an app issue
First and foremost, randomly restarting is the #1 complaint I've read on XDA in the EVO 4G section. I've suffered from it here and there and while other times I haven't the last set of threads I read regarding this implied that leaving WiFi on was to blame for some/most reboots. That being said, I am curious, have you left wifi on when rebooting occurred?
I have wifi enabled during the night when it is charging. The two times it restarted after or during a phone call wifi was not enabled.
I have juice defender and only recently set it up to leave wifi on when I'm in a wifi area because out really doesn't seem to drain that bad. I'll have tho disable wifi when my screen is off and see what happens.

I would try what I've seen mentioned in other threads; turn your wifi sleep policy to never sleep and see if that helps.
Have it set to never sleep, just checked.

Ok then welcome to the restart club
That being said, I am leaving my wifi off when not in use (SMS still works) and running the latest cm7 nightly and have yet to have a restart since I started doing this the other day. *shrug*
ok, well I'll set my wifi to disable when the screen turns off and see if I have any luck. I'll check to see if it restarts tonight or during the day but it usually happens in the middle of the night when it's charging.

Post back your findings, if any, tomorrow... I am quite curious now.
Will do, but I'm unsure that this will fix it. My brother just recently got an Evo too and he leaves his wifi on nearly 24/7 and his uptime is 161 hours as of now. He restarted it himself 7 days ago because his wifi was having trouble staying on. I'm debating on whether I should exchange it for a new one since I'm still within my 30 days...I think

Had wifi off and put it on the charger, restarted again in the middle if the night. I'm starting to think it's the charger. It's my old pre's charger. I'll use the htc one tonight and see what happens

I am interested in this as well...my gf's evo is an unrooted 003 with the. 97 hboot....only reason she isn't rooted yet is because of the reboots....incase she needs to swap it out..... I doubt she has her wifi on, but she isn't home for me to check that.....are there any other thoughts on this or do the majority need to get a new device? I have tep on both phones...
Well mine restarted last night and wifi was off. My brother leaves wifi on nearly 24/7 and doesn't see restarts.
I'm going to switch the charger and see if I get any restarts. If that doesn't work, I may try reformatting

I was getting a ton of reboots but then I rooted, not one reboot in 5 days.
Well, had a restart apparently an hour ago while the phone was in my pocket. No radios on. I guess going to try formatting.

I had the same problem, started with few times and was getting worst, rebooting every time that I played youtube, slingbox pandora, anything that uses a lot of 3g, so I went to sprint I after 4 hours they trade my phone for a used one and two days later at 3 in the morning a reboot again two times, so what I am doing is turning airplane mode on when I go bed and no more reboots for now, is something with the 3g radio, is my guess but now I know never never never htc phone, After I payed $500 for I new phone I ended with I used one. BS.
flash calkulins format all, then flash rom and everything else fixed when that was happening to me
Anyone have tips for an unrooted evo? I am holding off on rooting my gfs evo in case I need to have her exchange it....
I reformatted so I'll have to see how it goes tonight
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
No restart last night but I didn't have it charging at all and I had restarted it myself about an hour before I went to bed because i had backed up some data. I'll see how the next 24 hours go.

[Q] Extremely Slow Screen Wake Up Delay?

Just picked up the phone today and noticed a long delay between pressing the power button and the screen waking up. When it is plugged in there is no delay at all. The delay occurs whenever the phone is disconnected from a power source. It is about a 2 second delay. Is anyone else experiencing this? Best Buy didn't have another unit and the Sprint store was useless and wouldn't unplug their demo unit to compare.
I saw a thread concerning the standard Galaxy S II, but nothing Epic 4G Touch specific.
Thanks.
*update*
Just to make things perfectly clear, here is a video of the delay time:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqJc_nYuwac
*older update*
Downloaded Soft Locker Free and it allows the phone to instantly wake with no delay by bypassing a deep sleep mode. I'm unsure about how detrimental this is to the battery, but at least it's a fix. I'd still like to know if all Epic Touch phones have the wake up lag, though.
mine is doing this too.. are you using a SD Card wallpaper? I am. not sure if thats affecting things.
I have not noticed any delays on mine.
I have noticed this as well. I'm using a stock wallpaper.

You shouldn't do that, it will be detrimental to your battery. Deep sleep mode means that the processor is technically off, provided the phone doesn't have any tasks to run while the screen is off.
Its perfectly natural for your phone to wake up immediately when plugged in, because that's how samsung designed the galaxy's. No need to deep sleep when the phone's getting a charge.
By restricting your phone from sleeping (affectionately referred to as wake lock),your forcing your processor to run for nothing, most likely at 200mhz. When it's all said and done, I estimate you'll end up shaving off about 5 hours of battery life. Not worth it to me, just learn to deal with 1 sec it takes to wake up the phone.
On a lighter note, I find it amusing that you've installed an app that now makes the phone do something that is commonly known as a bug and a lot of people spend their time trying to squash. Lol.

The amount of threads I have read, the hundreds if not thousands of posts I have seen the hundreds of developers that have all chased wake-lock bugs are all disgusted right now. Thousands if not tens of thousands of man hours have gone into chasing the wake-lock bugs down on many many many devices....in roms, in kernels in conflicting apps. For years. Sometimes its simple, sometimes it's given up on completely.
You are right. Wow, just, wow.

I've noticed it too, but it isn't too bad of a lag. Not snappy like the EVO 4G, but not a dealbreaker, not on this.

Thanks for all the responses. My past Android phones (Evo and Evo 3D) didn't have any delay whatsoever, which is the origin of the original post. The power of the Galaxy S2 phones is pretty much legendary, which is why I'm surprised about this power saving feature. Reviews boast quick boot times, but I would argue that a regular wake time is much more useful and realistic to have. I do understand the basic premise that a powerful phone consumes more battery, but that didn't make any other dual core phone I've seen require this precaution.
Therefore, why is it that others forego this feature if it ultimately saves so much battery that Samsung has made it a default feature on their latest phones?
Updated the OP with a video. Please view and tell me if this is the norm.
I watched the video, mine is not that slow delay.

Funny how mine has all my apps on it... (over 40) and a **** load of music... And for the life of me I cant get it go lag like that.... I had a refurbished evo 3d that did that... I called sprint.after factory reset and.a few battery pulls... Id just return it.
roms dont fix all bugs let alone one random wake lag problem and the op may have to deal with it as most of us dont have lag like that...
@op if you got it from a store id bring it in.... if a rep says its suppose to do that.... Tell them your older android phone didnt do it... Then ask to speak to a manager
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Yeah... I had a feeling it was worse than it should have been. Though it's true a custom ROM could fix it, it would probably implement a fix similar to Soft Locker (which is obviously shunned for its battery draining ability). Also, I'd much rather have a device in proper working order to begin with. The Best Buy I got it from only had 2 on launch day, so here's hoping I find one that has it in stock.
Thanks for all the replies.

Menu randomly popping up

Road trip yesterday, using telenav app for GPS on my E4GT and noticed when cell signal was low, the menu button seemed to go crazy and phone was unresponsive. Searched here, but it doesn't seem to happen to everyone.
Is it hardware related? Should I get new phone? Does it happen with ICS?

This happens to me when signal is low, my thought process is that if it's searching for signal, the cpu is prioritizing that rather than keeping track of the menu button.
Was your battery life terrible, by chance?
I have the telenav app too - I haven't really used it much, I usually use the Google navigation.
However, right after the update, on first boot, Telenav appeared and said "updating" and hung - I had to battery pull, which made me nervous about Telenav on ICS.
And, my first day, I got about 6-7 hours LESS battery life than I had previously.
I'm strongly leaning towards simply uninstalling it.
Barry life great, 10-15 hours on EL29 rooted, CWM. thinking about rooted ff18 w CWM, but love good battery life. I use it all day for work.
Freaking menu spaz is driving me crazy. I'll get rid of it if its a normal problem in low signal areas.
It did it without using telenav as well. Heck, its doing it right now. Very frustrating.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Its a problem with the screen itself. I had that but it would happen regardless of battery life.
Just ask them to replace the screen/fix the screen.
Took it to sprint store today, they wanted to know if I had rooted it, said they would have to factory reset it. then if the problem continued, I could come back. Left the store, walked around a nearby big box store and it started again. Went right back, they said a replacement phone would be here in five to six days. Forgot to ask if I could have one in a box there. No charge, just got the phone two weeks ago.
Tech did mention that lots of people were bringing in the E4GT to have the ICS upgrade removed because it wasn't working as good as the GB.

I went a couple of days ago and was told that I was the second person to arrive that morning mentioning an issue with the newest update causing issues. I had 3 problems going on with my phone but this was the main issue. I had unrooted the phone and reset everything before I walked in so I wouldn't have them go through the trouble of doing that and waste time. I told them I have tested many things: flashing roms, modems, even PRLs (I knew the tech, so I was open about these things). I've had this issue for well over a month now and I got used to it but wouldn't mind getting it removed. I have done my own experiments and none seem to resolve it.
Their internal forums don't know what exactly is the cause of this "phantom menu press" but they are aware of the new ICS causing it. Their 2 solutions was either replacing the screen or a new phone. Although I was happy about a new phone (my phone has seen the concrete a couple times), I was hoping to see a fix at that moment.
Next time you go to the store, ask them to have the screen replaced. It could be that it is a faulty screen (sensor wise). I work for an engineering company and it is unbelievable how many new parts arrive faulty or with intermittent problems from the manufacturer.

I have had this problem since GB, it seems to happen when you have low signal and on 3G...I hardly use 4G but I have noticed this issue doesn't happen on WIFI...try a day or two without using 3G in the areas where you get low signal and let us know

burn in?

Hello,
I've been googling for days in order to avoid a repost out of respect for the community and to avoid redundancy, but my searches have yielded inconclusive results, with varying answers. Additionally, I couldn't find one in this particular subsection of the forum.
My problem stemmed from using Cyanogenmod while the screen is hot. I was texting on maximum brightness while also downloading several files so the entire AOSP messaging app got imprinted on the screen. The keyboard is faint but noticeable. I had a samsung epic 4g before this with similar problems that went away after I completely stopped usage and turned in on one day. The one on my old Galaxy SI was much more severe and visible from reasonable distance. This one is faint but enough to bother me.
Some searches said the handful screen burn in fix will help, other threads say I should just replace my device (I hope not to go through the hassle of that one) and others say that I should leave a white screen on and a few other searches say that such problems do not exist.
If this is a repost I apologize. All help appreciated.
First, have you shut the device off and let it cool down? If not, that could fix the issue. If that doesn't fix the issue, download LCD Test from the market, set it on the white screen, making sure that you keep the backlight on, and let that run for several hours. Sounds like a pain, but it can potentially fix the issue. There are other methods, but try these two first and if they don't work, let me know and we can try something else.

Never had that issue or seen a phone with that issue. never even had anyone come into the Tmo store I work at with that issue. Sounds to me that if you have had it on your past 3-4 phones maybe you should look at adjusting the way your using them.
As far as fixing it. Do the white screen thing or get it replaced

That's odd since this is a fairly common issue among those who use AOSP keyboard. To be frank I had my ex's name burn in on the screen as well because we messaged so much. Poetic justice perhaps.
I have successfully returned the phone and gotten a new titanium grey one. Thank you both.
