Hello,
I've been googling for days in order to avoid a repost out of respect for the community and to avoid redundancy, but my searches have yielded inconclusive results, with varying answers. Additionally, I couldn't find one in this particular subsection of the forum.
My problem stemmed from using Cyanogenmod while the screen is hot. I was texting on maximum brightness while also downloading several files so the entire AOSP messaging app got imprinted on the screen. The keyboard is faint but noticeable. I had a samsung epic 4g before this with similar problems that went away after I completely stopped usage and turned in on one day. The one on my old Galaxy SI was much more severe and visible from reasonable distance. This one is faint but enough to bother me.
Some searches said the handful screen burn in fix will help, other threads say I should just replace my device (I hope not to go through the hassle of that one) and others say that I should leave a white screen on and a few other searches say that such problems do not exist.
If this is a repost I apologize. All help appreciated.
First, have you shut the device off and let it cool down? If not, that could fix the issue. If that doesn't fix the issue, download LCD Test from the market, set it on the white screen, making sure that you keep the backlight on, and let that run for several hours. Sounds like a pain, but it can potentially fix the issue. There are other methods, but try these two first and if they don't work, let me know and we can try something else.

Never had that issue or seen a phone with that issue. never even had anyone come into the Tmo store I work at with that issue. Sounds to me that if you have had it on your past 3-4 phones maybe you should look at adjusting the way your using them.
As far as fixing it. Do the white screen thing or get it replaced

That's odd since this is a fairly common issue among those who use AOSP keyboard. To be frank I had my ex's name burn in on the screen as well because we messaged so much. Poetic justice perhaps.
I have successfully returned the phone and gotten a new titanium grey one. Thank you both.

Have a major problem with my screen when turning phone on or rebooting the screen looks fine. But when I get to the actual home screen it's looks crazy with vertical lines on it like a white noise effect but when I shut the screen off and then turn it back on it's gone. It's freaking me the hell out what could be causing it? Is there something wrong with my phone? Is there a setting somewhere that's out of whack? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like a hardware issue, which ROM are you using?
Try reflashing.

I had this problem right after I flashed a kernel. Try wiping your dalvik and cache and rebooting, thats what fixxed it for me.
I have this same problem, and it only happens with certain kernels. I think it's an Epson thing. My last phone was a Novatech and had no issues and my current one is an Epson. Sometimes it's that crazy vertical line garbage, others times it's horrible tearing. It only happens after a reboot and ALWAYS goes away after turning the screen off and on. I stopped caring about it a while ago because it always goes away.
Thanks guys I rest easy now I was worried I was going to have to deal with sprint.

No prob man. With my last phone I was very limited with which ROMs and kernels I could run. It wouldnt run any AOSP ROM and most if not all HAVS kernels were a no-go. My current one will run anything I want it to run, and runs MUCH smoother and snappier than my last phone. So, I deal with the weird screen thing and I get a phone that blows the socks off my last one. It's a fair trade off IMHO.
Ya I got worried as I'm still at noob status with this whole rooting thing and thought I fried my phone. I tried searching the forums but couldn't find the issue anywhere I had talked to sprint and they told me that it was a hardware issue. Glad that its nothing to worry about. I'm loving the boosted speed that I get from my phone.

Are you running a custom ROM/kernel or are you still stock?
Running cm6.1
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Yeah, definitely don't worry about it then. If that's the only issue you're having then let it go, it's not a big issue at all
Have you tried MIUI yet?
No not yet.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Well if you are a fan of AOSP then I recommend at least trying it. I thought I was going to hate it but tried it on a whim and have never looked back.
This is a fairly common issue with cm6.1 rc1.
There's a thread in the cm forums where multiple people are getting the same thing. I would post the link, but apparently I'm too new here.
I have an extremely annoying issue. I've seen some posts reporting this on various boards, but it seems most people throw a default answer out there that it's a hardware issue. I'll explain why I don't think that's the case.
The menu that comes up with you press the "menu" capacitive key has been popping up and down rapidly and repeatedly when I'm in a low signal area. This didn't start happening until after Samsung/Sprint fixed the LOS issue. I'm thinking it has something to do with the way they fixed it, which I don't have any technical or general knowledge of. Most of the time, the screen and keys will not be responsive unless I hit the power key to turn the screen off and turn it back on. It's even more annoying since it vibrates everytime the key is "pressed". I don't think this is simply a hardware issue as the only time this presents itself is the same times the LOS issue used to. I'm sure it's tied to that fix somehow.
Is anybody else having this issue? This may be a long shot, but I installed the LOS Checker zip, (I forgot which dev created it), and never uninstalled it, but I've upgraded many roms since then and don't think it would still be installed.
If any of you do have this issue, did you ever install that LOS Checker zip?
Rom= Blazer Rom EL29 v3.8
Kernel = rogue 1.4.1
Started happening to me recently as well. Im running Calks still on GB with ICS theme. I haven't paid attention to my signal when it happens but you are right, turning off the screen does stop it momentarily. I agree this may not be a hardware issue as well. I've just been bearing it because I plan on changing phones soon anyway.
Edit: It just started happening after this post. Signal was at 1 bar...

I have this same issue. I never realized it correlated with low signal. The issue cropped up 3 times today and each occurrence was with low signal. Good eye sir.
Do any of you undervolt or use a kernel that runs less than standard voltages?
My device is undervolted quite a bit and was wondering if it may be part of issue as i don't remember having this problem prior to that.
I am removing my undervolts and will report back if i still have this issue.

I think its a hardware issue. Im running the same setup on my replacement phone and haven't had the issue since.
I experienced this ever since I got the phone back in september but I didn't wise up until the 14 day period ended. there are two threads in the Q&A section concerning this, one that i started and another that i contributed to.
I would be trying to text and the menu button would pop up and i would accidently hit something on the menu that came up bc the button spazzes out randomly and consecutively and sometimes for a solid 5 seconds, but like the rest of you im sure, it wasnt confined to any single app so it was impossible to find one thing to blame. it would have to be something system-related or hardware-related (btw i did flash the LOS checker some time ago)
I believed the low signal theory for a while, as well as having a corrupted flash. but I experienced the spasms with full bars of service AND after a complete Odin restore to stock everything without restoring any of my past data whatsoever. thus I deferred to the "default" that it is hardware-related.
that was months ago.
I got so fed up with it, i decided to do anything to make it stop. So, I recently opened up my device and took everything apart and found that the water indicator just above the capacitive buttons had been activated. keep in mind I DID NOT EVER have any encounter with water. in fact, the other water indicators were perfectly undisturbed. this pissed me off because that means there might have been an accident or something while they were being manufactured that would have damaged the button - idk just another theory.
This is my main piece of evidence supporting my claim that it is hardware-related:
I ended up breaking the screen trying to separate the glass from the digitizer (stupid, I know bc theyre fused together) so I ended up buying a new screen/digitizer. put it in myself. i haven't had it since. I'm running the EXACT same set up as before I replaced my screen and its been about a week and no instances. I would be experiencing the sporadic menu button randomly, several times a day but it has completely disappeared.
i suggest to you all: bring it in to Sprint if you bought it from them or invest in a new screen off ebay if you bought it from a 3rd party seller (Amazon, wirefly, letstalk), i got my new screen for $65 shipped and it was in pristine condition. now im living a happily-ever-after ending
i'll keep a close eye on this thread to help you all with your endeavors/theories though
if any of you plan on opening up ur device, i suggest you do some homework so as not to destory your phone - its still an amazing device. or you can just ask in this thread and i can give tips to everyone
good luck!!
Thanks for all the updates.. I've noticed I'll sometimes get this error, but my phone will be showing full bars where I KNOW I have a poor signal.. for instance, my elevator at work..
Is there any sort of logging app I could run and go into an area I know this will happen to find out what's going on?

sometimes the signal bars are inaccurate (like you described). your true signal is found in settings>about phone>status>signal strength. 0-1 bars is really about -90 to -100 dBm
devs use logcats to analyze issues with the internals
http://forum.samdroid.net/f38/tutorial-how-get-logcat-example-check-battery-drain-2543/
I just checked a few other boards and it seems a number of people have confirmed it correlates wih low signal. There are a few people that keep popping up on multiple threads stating it's a hardware issue, only because a new screen fixed it. I would be fine with that logic if there weren't so many people stating it correlates with low signal. Also, it seems most people haven't really experienced this issue until after the LOS fix. Now, at the same times I used to have LOS issues, I now have this. I'm guessing it has something to do with internals and whatever they did to update it may be separate from modems or roms, since people have gone back to stock and still experienced this issue.
I haven't done a search, but is there an information source that states exactly what Samsung did to address the LOS issue?
I'm going to ODIN back to the original shipped EG30 package and test it out.. I never did OTA updates.. always through ODIN, etc. I'm going to see if I update through OTAs if anything is different. I'll report back.
I had experienced it since around the 1st week of october. i didnt have los fixed until i flashed chris41g's experimental kernels, not sure when all that was though. i was convinced it was related to signal too, but i would still happen on the highway/in public with 3 bars of 4g and ~50-60 dBm
would be interesting if you figure it out though
Yea I ODIN'd back to EG30 and now OTA'd to EL29.. no issues yet but we'll see tomorrow when I'm in elevators. After doing all this, I realized I probably need to do a full EEPROM reset and then go through this... don't really feel like doing that tonight though.
Im pretty sure this is in fact a samsung phone issue in general. I came over to sprint and the e4gt from verizon and the fascinate. I loved that phone, but it had this exact same issue. I have not in fact had it happen to me so far with the e4gt yet. I have a sneaking suspiscion that this issue goes hand in hand with undervolting, but thats just my own personaly theory.

Happens to me on the rare occasion as well. Might be an issue with the phone?
I called this one during the LOS era. It definitely occurs in low signal areas. I could never get LOS so I went into known dead spots and sure enough those random pop ups happened

I noticed there were a few other threads on Samsung devices with issues.... hmmm. Did you ever try limiting your underclocking to a higher clock speed? This may be a noob question but for the EG4T, is anything less than 800mhz considered underclocking?

I believe I remember seeing your post haha... I'll see what I can do if I mess around with clock speed.
I have a very strange wifi/bluetooth problem that seemed to come out of nowhere and I think it may be hardware but I'm not too sure. When I format the system and install a new ROM everything works as it should for a little while but then within a few hours the software toggle switch grays out and wifi and or bluetooth don't respond. Bluetooth always seems to go out first but wifi follows soon after. I thought originally I had a corrupted driver or something but no matter how many different ROMS I try, going from gingerbread all the way to jelleybean and the phone always acts the same after a seemingly random amount of time. I don't know too much about how bluetooth/wifi drivers work so this may still be the issue.
Sometimes by toggling the various switches off/on a bunch wifi will go back on, and even more rarely bluetooth will work without a system format but it never stays working. If anyone knows what the problem may be I would appreciate some help or if you can point me to a component level diagram that would be helpful too. I have been looking around for a few weeks now with no luck. I never dropped the phone and it looks like I just pulled it out of the box. I did take it apart and look for loose connections and cold solder joints (I have quite a bit of experience at component level repair) but found nothing.
I did try to go back to stock GB with Odin and that was about the same, it worked for about a day and then the problems crept back up.
I thought for sure someone would have an answer.

I have a very similar issue but it only affects my Bluetooth. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I haven't been able to pin point it. I've done the exact same steps as you. I just chalked it up to it being a hardware issue since I got my S2 from a lady that ran over the phone with her car. I just replaced the glass. She knew it could be fixed but she wanted me to have a better phone. What a sweet old lady. ANYWHO, I would love to see some more input on this.

So I searched this thread, and googled this issue, but found nothing. I've had my s3 for about 2 months and since day 1 it seems that when I press app icons or widgets, (google search for example) nothing happens. Not all the time, but many times I have to press the icon/widget 2 to 3 times to get it to work. I've had 2 captivates and several S2's and never had this issue. I've been on complete stock, stock rooted, and AOKP and it is the same each time. Considering I googled this and found nothing should I consider this to be a problem with the phone I have or does anyone else experience this, is this just how this phone works?

Have you tried utilizing your warranty? Are you using a screen protector and/or case? There are too many things to list. If you are using a screen protector (or a case with one built in such as the Otterbox Defender) have you tried without the screen protector? If this does not work then a warranty call to AT&T is your best bet.
No screen protector. I'm still under warranty, and I have BB Black tie protection, just wanted to see if this is the norm for this phone or not. Pretty sure I've got a messed up phone, just wanted to see what others had to say. Thanks

That happens to me too sometimes. It's happened to my SII as well. I think it's normal (.. sort of?).
Hello about a month ago I purchased two of these devices one was for my friend one was for me. Mine had a loose frame that when you would push slightly on the bezel near the volume button you can hear it goin in and creaking as if it was not solid. I compared to the other device I bought and with other s4s and it felt more solid than mine so I changed for another. My girlfriends on the other hand lives in New York and she bought one on her own terms from a store I purchased mine through online. My exchanged device came in and with a purple tint on bottom half.of screen its slight and noticeable on grey backgrounds while brightness is low. My phone also randomly rebooted once and has had multiple camera failures..it seems to have gone away tho for me. On the other hand my girlfriend has now exchanged her phone once because it was rebooting constantly and having other problems and now the phone that they gave her for a replacement has tons of random reboots while doing pretty much anything it's very random I have been on the phone with her and it suddenly rebooted on her causing our call to end. She is also complaining about camera failure and reboots aren't seeming to fix it.. As it comes back and anytime she switches to front camera..so pretty much all of our devices have issues and even the exchanged ones do too. And they were purchased in diff states and one in store the other online. I have had every galaxy phone since the s2 including the note series and I have never experienced so many problems out of the box and I was an early adopter for all the other devices. I converted my girlfriend from the iPhone to this phone and now all she is having problems and is getting frustrated because she says that she's been in important calls and her phone has just rebooted for no reason amongst other problem she is facing. Her first device didn't have the camera failure and neither did my first device but now both of our exchange devices are giving us, failures.. Not really sure what to do I'm already out of buyers remorse I feel like calling to mobile to get yet another one but not sure if it will give it to me.. I'm a huge fan of samsung galaxy 9 but this phone has more issues than I thought and they are real issues this isnt just lag were complaining about or that thephone isnt quick enough or something dumb these are real problems. while on my vacation I had to deal with random camera failures..my gf with tons of reboots and camera fails.. These are issues that now make you go out of your way for the phone instead of the phone making itself go out of the way for yourself. It's honestly unacceptable.. So I want to know how many people with the T Mobile version: have experienced any of this. Take off the battery of the phone and just press around the plastic frame and see if you hear any pops like mine did.. Or has anybody had continuous camera failure whether resolved or not has it happened.. Random reboots to? I am aware that a new kernel or rom could fix this problem but my girlfriend lives in New York and she doesn't have the time to do this or knowledge and really shouldn't have to. So it's been at least four of these devices that have had issues from purple tint to loose frame to reboot to camera failure...really disappointing. Will T-Mobile send me a new one even out of buyers remorse?? I love this phone and so does my girl but we like using our cameras everyday and can't deal with these other apparent issues...what to do?
O forgot to mention that the phone flickers the screen while hit by Sunlight.. While keyboard is up and in white backgrounds as well as using the camera.. Screen looks like its blinking really fast..I know this issue is in ALL s4s but thought I'd throw it in to another set of problems... This one I can deal with though..reboots and camera failure?? Can't deal with that
These issues I've experienced personally and I'm speaking of my experiences only I don't make up stuff or use other members issues to add to mine. Those issues are present for me and my girl and we have now exchanged our phones twice.. We would be getting our 3rd s4 if we exchange again.
