[Q] Extremely Slow Screen Wake Up Delay? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Just picked up the phone today and noticed a long delay between pressing the power button and the screen waking up. When it is plugged in there is no delay at all. The delay occurs whenever the phone is disconnected from a power source. It is about a 2 second delay. Is anyone else experiencing this? Best Buy didn't have another unit and the Sprint store was useless and wouldn't unplug their demo unit to compare.
I saw a thread concerning the standard Galaxy S II, but nothing Epic 4G Touch specific.
Thanks.
*update*
Just to make things perfectly clear, here is a video of the delay time:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqJc_nYuwac
*older update*
Downloaded Soft Locker Free and it allows the phone to instantly wake with no delay by bypassing a deep sleep mode. I'm unsure about how detrimental this is to the battery, but at least it's a fix. I'd still like to know if all Epic Touch phones have the wake up lag, though.

mine is doing this too.. are you using a SD Card wallpaper? I am. not sure if thats affecting things.

I have not noticed any delays on mine.

I have noticed this as well. I'm using a stock wallpaper.

You shouldn't do that, it will be detrimental to your battery. Deep sleep mode means that the processor is technically off, provided the phone doesn't have any tasks to run while the screen is off.
Its perfectly natural for your phone to wake up immediately when plugged in, because that's how samsung designed the galaxy's. No need to deep sleep when the phone's getting a charge.
By restricting your phone from sleeping (affectionately referred to as wake lock),your forcing your processor to run for nothing, most likely at 200mhz. When it's all said and done, I estimate you'll end up shaving off about 5 hours of battery life. Not worth it to me, just learn to deal with 1 sec it takes to wake up the phone.
On a lighter note, I find it amusing that you've installed an app that now makes the phone do something that is commonly known as a bug and a lot of people spend their time trying to squash. Lol.

The amount of threads I have read, the hundreds if not thousands of posts I have seen the hundreds of developers that have all chased wake-lock bugs are all disgusted right now. Thousands if not tens of thousands of man hours have gone into chasing the wake-lock bugs down on many many many devices....in roms, in kernels in conflicting apps. For years. Sometimes its simple, sometimes it's given up on completely.
You are right. Wow, just, wow.

I've noticed it too, but it isn't too bad of a lag. Not snappy like the EVO 4G, but not a dealbreaker, not on this.

Don't wakelock the phone.

Voluntarily wake locking a phone? Haven't heard that before lol

Thanks for all the responses. My past Android phones (Evo and Evo 3D) didn't have any delay whatsoever, which is the origin of the original post. The power of the Galaxy S2 phones is pretty much legendary, which is why I'm surprised about this power saving feature. Reviews boast quick boot times, but I would argue that a regular wake time is much more useful and realistic to have. I do understand the basic premise that a powerful phone consumes more battery, but that didn't make any other dual core phone I've seen require this precaution.
Therefore, why is it that others forego this feature if it ultimately saves so much battery that Samsung has made it a default feature on their latest phones?

Updated the OP with a video. Please view and tell me if this is the norm.

I watched the video, mine is not that slow delay.

Funny how mine has all my apps on it... (over 40) and a **** load of music... And for the life of me I cant get it go lag like that.... I had a refurbished evo 3d that did that... I called sprint.after factory reset and.a few battery pulls... Id just return it.
roms dont fix all bugs let alone one random wake lag problem and the op may have to deal with it as most of us dont have lag like that...
@op if you got it from a store id bring it in.... if a rep says its suppose to do that.... Tell them your older android phone didnt do it... Then ask to speak to a manager
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

Yeah... I had a feeling it was worse than it should have been. Though it's true a custom ROM could fix it, it would probably implement a fix similar to Soft Locker (which is obviously shunned for its battery draining ability). Also, I'd much rather have a device in proper working order to begin with. The Best Buy I got it from only had 2 on launch day, so here's hoping I find one that has it in stock.
Thanks for all the replies.

My delay is similar to the video. How does everyone else compare after seeing the video?

Does your phone have a delay when turning the display on?

I noticed that there would sometimes (50% chance) that there will be a noticeable 1 second delay when pushing the power button and when the display actually turns on. It's annoying because sometimes i'll want to check the time, and i'll push the button as i'm taking it out of my pocket only to be met with a black display still.
i tried turning off the pattern lock thinkng that was it but still having the same problem.
i'm completely stock.
No delay here...when I press the power button, my display comes on instantly.

Still thread ****ting on every topic about the delay?
Its obvious why the delay doesn't bother you; you already have too much time on your hands.
Otherwise, it's an obvious flaw in the phone. Why don't you let other people worry about their own lives and how many seconds are wasted.

thanks for the link, i'll check it out.
yes its terrible anyone have a fix to this yet
If it's because of the SD card, trying increasing the SD Card Read Ahead Buffer. It can be built into the kernel or changed with a few market apps, or even a script. It'll also make photos/videos/anything from the SD card load faster.

Isn't this forum built for people who want to get the most of their devices? If everyone just decided things were 'good enough' you wouldn't have devs here writing custom kernels and ROMs. If the issue doesn't bother you then don't bother posting in the thread. And if you absolutely must, don't be a douche about it.
OT: I noticed it too. This is my first smartphone, but it stood out. I assumed it was normal. It's not huge, but I definitely wouldn't mind a fix that didn't require abandoning my SD card.

Agreed, especially since it's a 32GB card and it's transferable between phones...
Screen lags reminds me of pre-pay gas purchases.

It's not a HUGE issue, but it is something that should be fixed.
In fact, just to move things forward, I tried increasing the SD Read Ahead Buffer with an app "SD Card Booster" or some name like that, which doesn't decrease the speed of the screen coming on, but does drastically cause photos and other things to load faster when you, say, open the Gallery. That was expected though. We used to increase it on the OG Evo.
Ive owned a few smartphones noticed ET lag after 3rd wake up.
First thing I thought of was Sprint Blackberry curve 8330-M.
It did the same thing drove me crazy lol
I tell you what...take your phone back to Sprint and tell them you have a 2 second lag and see what they say...maybe you can get a new phone...its obviously a defect...

Most likely something that you have installed on your phone isnt liking ICS. Hard to narrow down if you have alot of apps installed.
I have had mine for 6 days now and not had a single Sleep of Death and I havent seen too many comments about it so I dont think its a problem with ICS directly.

Well its still worth noting. SetCPU never did this on my DHD
I had exactly the same thing last night, I even made my own thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360847&page=2
I even wrote a simple app for logging the battery temperature and time, so I'll leave it on next night and I'll see what happens. Because I'm pretty sure my phone switched off due to overheating, as it was really, really hot in the morning, after I switched it on the battery was at 46C.
I'm afraid I can confirm that I have experienced the same "sleep of death" problem twice now. I can't remember what I was doing the first time, but the second time I was only browsing and I know I didn't have any apps installed because I had previously reset my phone. I've only had the phone for two days now and if it does it again I might have to send it back.
I expected a glitch or two, but with the volume bug and other annoying things like the lack of flash and poor camera quality, I'm beginning to regret my purchase. Although I love the ice cream sandwich experience, I'm now thinking of getting the Galaxy Note instead, and waiting for ICS to arrive on that next year. At least then I will be able to watch iPlayer in the meantime.
Mines done it about 4 times. Pre installed Movie maker seems to induce it.

Had a sleep of death for the first time yesterday - the only "different" thing I did during the day was use spotify so there maybe something in that!
Same again last night, woke up this morning and phone was on but wouldn't wake. Notification light was on solid. Was plugged in at wall all night, didn't seem too warm when I held it.
Time to start debugging I guess
I've had this issue twice too.
I do not have spotify installed, and the phone was NOT hot at all. Not even warm!
I was just in gmail, sent a mail, then pressed the home button, and black.... gone.
Had to pull battery.
Thinking of having phone replaced by Handtec. I know this is probably a software glitch, but the volume bug, and the fact my unit was one that handtec had "tested" etc, I might just ask for a brand new one from the new flashed batch due next week.
Wtf! Just how wide spread is this??? Seems like too many people are having this issue.
Phone hasn't even arrived yet and I'm already starting to question my purchase.
1 more bug and im cancelling my order !
Well, it's the first device with ICS so I expect there will be a few bugs in the future which will need to be fixed. That's the reason why I'll go for the Nexus ... it's a nice piece of hardware but even more important is that it will be the device which gets the fixes first.
Did anyone check to see if you've had an OTA for the volume ghost fix and this problem has spawned instead? Seems like a fairly new problem if you have followed the forum.

Wlan_wake in Better battery stats

Hi all,
So my phone recently started giving me some battery issues that I just cannot for the life of me get resolved. I noticed that under better battery stats, my phone was avoiding deep sleep. Looking at the kernel wake locks shows Wlan_wake with nearly non stop wakes. I've done just about everything. I've wiped totally to stock Blu Kuban, tried different radios, kernels etc. I get these even on a fresh wipe with no apps installed and no sync on. It doesn't seem to be related to any application in particular. If I turn off wifi and just use 3g,the phone goes into deep sleep immediately and stays. The Wlan_wake stops and the wake counter doesn't keep ramping up. The phone once again gets great battery life while sitting idle. This occurs on both of the wifi I use predominantly, home and work. I'm really at my wits end since when I go to bed, my phones battery gets knocked down a good 20-30% in the 7 hours I go to bed. Attached is just a small sampling of what it's doing.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

While I can appreciate people who want to hamstring their phones to save battery life, turning off WiFi is not an option for most people who actually use their phones for grown up things.
Sprint data is horribly unreliable for me... Without WiFi on, I would never be notified of important emails from work, done of which are time sensitive.
It's too bad that ICS has such bad battery life when compared to a similarly configured GB device.

Is there some specific reason you can't charge your phone while you sleep? It seems like that's the most obvious and easiest solution to your complaint...
I'll take a look at that wifi idle time thread, thanks man.
To the rest, when I suddenly have a glaring issue with my phone, I usually don't include "pretend the problem doesn't exist" as a troubleshooting method. If that's what has to be done, so be it. Charging the phone while sleeping is fine, depending on my schedule/battery level, but that doesn't answer the question of why the battery is absolutely horrific when the phone is doing absolutely nothing. It's not syncing, it's not pulling down data from apps etc. I guess I'm just having trouble coming to terms with the fact that Gingerbread idles, with sync on, about 3-5 percent in an 8 hour period (on blazer) while my ics experiences have been literally 10 times worse. It's hard to just say "oh, ICS battery life just isn't as good", when the disparity is that large.
I want to make sure I'm an exception, not the rule as far as idle drain is concerned.

Since I'm included in the "rest" ill say that I was not suggesting that you ignore it, I was simply suggesting that by charging while you sleep you would remedy the issue for the time being, as there is absolutely no logical reason your phone can't be charging while you sleep... including battery level... im assuming from your post you wait till the battery is low to charge, that is unecessary as Li-Ion batteries do not have a memory, so incremental charging will not damage them, in fact ive read that its actually better for them than full power cycles.... if you want more possible solutions perhaps you should start by following revampers link and using the damn search bar, as there are 10's of ics battery threads, and I'm pretty sure phaker posted a solution to a very similar issue in one of them, as opposed to starting yet another thread about an issue that's been beat to death and replying condesendingly to those who offer you suggestions not entirely to you're liking....also use the thanks button at least for revampers post as you seem to have found at least that useful, its considered common courtesy around here...

Stock T-Mobile S3 Starting to Run Bad

I'm about 3 months in and its already running terribly. Totally stock. I mean I can't be the only person that had these issues Haha. This is my 4th Android phone since the G1. I've rooted and tried tons of custom ROMs on all of them except this one so far. Every time whether its stock or a ROM I get to the couple week or couple month point (never more than 3 months) and boom... lag, freezing, reboots, more lag, more freezing.
Do I just suck at owning an Android phone? The only thing I can think of that I might be doing "wrong" is having lots of apps/games installed but what good is a smartphone if you can't have a lot of apps/games installed?
I have 3 active widgets. A live wallpaper but I've tried getting rid of it and things are no better. A 64gb SD card that's mostly empty. 1-2gb internal storage free at any given time (I try to go through and delete games I'm never gonna play at least once in a while).
Battery life is abysmal. Like i said tons of freezing. Sometimes getting from my home screen to the dialer can take like a solid 10 seconds. Chrome freezes up constantly where nothing will happen for like 10-15 seconds. And today I just started getting random reboots.
Any thoughts or suggestions. I'm gonna try that carbon app to backup my game save data soon so I can bother myself with a restore but its gonna be a real pain and I just really hope it makes a difference.
Thanks for your thoughts
Dave

I suppose it was mostly a rant. I can move it when I get home (out on the phone now).

I commiserate. I really do. But, with the 2 in my possession I've kept for a long time there just aren't issues like that.
The g1 was first smartphone, too.
If I recall buying a new battery and doing tune ups (new software/apps), clearing the cache, etc. helped back then. And probably would, now.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Since it's working fine for a time, I'm going to say it's a software issue. Do you have Lookout (the security app)? It's either a poorly coded app or a malicious one. Can we see some of those battery stats?
have you tried removing the games from your phone?
I don't have lookout. Should I check it out?
And like I said, removing my games kinda defeats the purpose of having this big awesome smartphone. Although I do delete games on a regular basis...
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Did you update from ICS to JB without wiping? My wife's s3 (bone stock) had the same stuff going on after updating. It was all resolved with a factory reset.
It could also be other things.. Such as a rogue app eating up your ram.
Removing the games isn't supposed to be permanent. Just to help troubleshoot. Still haven't seen your battery stats. And yes, get Lookout, it's free.
Not sure which info you need to see regarding battery but heres a screenshot. Gonna check out lookout now. Also keep in mind leg/freezing is definitely more the issue than battery. Battery is terrible lately but I can live with that since I have chargers in every room, car, work, and one of those recharger packs haha

I think it's likely that the two are part of the same problem. Get Lookout and run a scan. Also, pick up the free version of GSam Battery Monitor and see if that can provide any clues.
If you aren't using Maps, disable it. Likes to eat battery when it shouldn't even be running. I use Titanium Backup to make an enable/disable widget for Maps and Google Play Music. GPS will work fine without Maps. Don't need it.
Also, do a battery pull. If the battery isn't seated properly, it can cause atrocious life. Didn't think that could happen... until I saw it happen.
So the main lookout app found no issues but the lookout ad detector found 4 collect location information and 11 collect network information apps. I'm gonna go through them tomorrow. Some from a quick look are big games I play daily which obviously I dont want to remove but I'm sure that some I can.

I do tend to use maps almost every day so not sure if I should disable it. Then again it does seem to run CONSTANTLY which i always found kinda ridiculous. Also I use play music every day but not the widget.
Had to do a battery pull earlier today when the device just shut off out of nowhere.
After looking at these ad network apps I'll check out that gsam battery monitor. Thanks for the suggestions so far everyone.

Idk you might be having too many apps and games lol idk.. Like others have said factory reset, also you may have a lot of apps that demand notifications that could greatly affect battery life such as Facebook etcc.

I agree. Might be a bad app. Save your data and do a factory reset like it was mentioned. Should clear issues right up. If not then take the next step and exchange it if possible.

Besides the apps and games do you get a lot of pic messages and text from many people? Did you leave the auto delete after so many pic messages and text on or did you turn it off?

No such issues on my phone, and a cheap $25-$30 hyperion battery will solve your battery woes.

Quick update. Woke up this morning and my phone was just off. Turned it back on, went to the bathroom, came back, it was off again. Got it back on and its running slow as hell but its on at least. This shutting off / rebooting stuff is new this week. Its terrible.
I guess im gonna try out carbon to back up my game data and see what I can do. It just really sucks if it turns out the issue is that a 16gb smart phone can't really store a lot of games. What a waste. Might as well carry an iPod touch and a flip phone Haha.
BTW I do get tons of text but I try to go in and clear those out every so often too. I never let my internal storage get below 1gb, 2 if I can help it.

faulty nexus?

i ordered a verizon nexus off ebay for a decent price. physically it looked great but the battery life has been pretty bad. overnight i can get it down to 3% an hour discharge just sitting there, but when i actually use it i'm lucky to get an hour and a half screen on time. and that's using an underclocked kernal.
also, it seems that no matter what rom or kernal i use i get a freeze once a day where i have to pull the battery. not an SOD but the screen is on and frozen and the phone is totally unresponsive. stock or custom rom, stock or custom kernal.
did i get hosed with this phone?
PS i ordered a new samsung battery just in case but it didn't help
We need more information. Sound like user error?

how in the world did you come to that conclusion? and what other information would you like? this isn't even close to my first android phone
ok more info.. LTE off. bluetooth off. wifi off. screen on auto (i know the auto isnt' the best but i need to be able to see the screen when i'm out in the sun) couple of phone calls, couple of texts. checked FB a few times. if i'm using the phone for 5 minutes i can watch the battery go down 2 ticks.
also some times when i wake the phone up it lags like mad until i turn off the screen and turn it back on. raised the minimum CPU speed but it still does it. also the phone does go into deep sleep and doesn't seem to wake itself often
ok my phone just froze in recovery too. something is not right here
My guess is main board. My first GNex had little flaws that I thought were just software/New technology problems - NFC tags were often hard to register, reboots at random, power button taking a few tries to activate from time to time, device freezing at odd times. Then one day it just wouldn't turn on. Still under warranty, got it replaced, and now realize how defective it was.

i guess since i'm not the original owner i'm probably out of luck. guess i'll contact the seller and see what happens
i think i kno whats causing the lag ! i cant really say but battery life ! to get rid of the lag install this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5rb3ZpdC5wLmZvcmV2ZXJnb25lIl0.
let it fill ur sd card and when its about 90% or so done ! stop the filling and do "release free space" then reboot bout 3-4 times ! ur lag should be gone !
it worked for me , cant really say it'll work for u ! but give it a shot
edit- DO NOT USE THE PHONE (no sms, calls NOTHING) while this procedure is going on, or else itll freeze and get stuck on bootanimation (at times ) ! and prevent it from going to sleep ! do 10 min for screen timeout in display settings !
That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.
Someone else try it! lol

Can attest to the app "Forever Gone" doing its job. :good:
well it looks like its a moot point anyway. i bought this phone so i could go prepaid when i left my job but verizon is ridiculous with their plans. they won't let me put the nexus on a prepaid plan , but they'll let me get 300 mb of data for 80 bucks a month! bunch of thieves. i guess i'm gonna get a nexus 4 and tmobile prepaid
I feel ya man, this is probably my last Verizon phone, bought it off contract too so I can leave anytime B)
Verizon's 3G has gone to hell in many places, like Sprint-speed, I mean 4G my record is about 33 Mbps down, but I live in an "Extended 4G Coverage Area", A.K.A. no 4G and barely any 3G, where I'm lucky to pull 200 kbps down...
T-Mobile doesn't have this problem, and I don't need the exclusive Verizon coverage anymore... Looks like I made up my mind lol, no I'll be here for a while.

That doesn't matter. The warranty goes with the phone, not the owner. As long as its under warranty they will replace it.
