Tep - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My charging port is getting kind of loose my charger and usb is real easy to slip out. My usb sometimes disconnects from the computer but doesn't do it often. Will sprint just fix it or will I need a replacement? I don't feel like rooting hwd 004. My hdmi doesn't work and my data is horrible but I use verizon prl that made it better but my data is always disconnecting, when I first got the phone it was always around 1.0mbps now on sprint prl .20-.56mbps. Should I try for a replacement or just deal with it?
Swyped from my Rom but will always be a Mynion!

Just went through this with sprint. They are very adament in not replacing the device w/o the $100 deductible.
They say it's wear and tear and wont fix it and you need to contact assurion.
I got mine replaced as I did alot of *****ing.
Good luck to ya

Thanks. Lol why is sprint being so greedy lol we are already paying the tep+wimax fee when I barely use both. 4g isn't even in michigan and I have two lines so they are getting double from me lol I think I covered that $100 already lol just by paying that lol and lets not talk about my phone bill lol. Greedy Sprint

My store would replace that device for you.

I walked in told them me charging port was broken, left it with them for about an hour so they could verify it. They filed a warranty claim for me as a defective device and shipped me one that arrived the next day. No $$$$ out of my pocket. No *****ing, no being irate or making demands.

Just a thought....
Have you tried a different cable? Seems the HTC cables do not plug in as tight as other brands. Mine was very loose and wouldn't charge right so I switched the cable out to another one from an LG phone and it is way tighter of a connection. I have to pull it in with a small bit of force to get it to unplug.

Is your store in MI

All the guys in my local sprint is rooted and one of them have a extended battery like me but he was jealous of Myn's RLS4.95 when it was in beta lol he was on fresh.

Hey i work for sprint too in Mi, but i am about 4 hrs away from you. TEP will cover it because there is a known issue with the charging ports. Also you shouldn't have to go w/o a phone for the day, i would suggest kicking it back to stock to avoid issues w/ the repair techs. But that would only be with the stores that know what they're doing. lol Feel free to PM me if you have any other q's.

[Q] Question about getting a replacement phone

Over the last few days I had my phone plugged into the factory charger and it over heated.
The batter actually swelled up so fat that it pushed the cover off the back. It left green splotches the size of quarters on my screen that have gotten smaller over the last few days. The phone is still acting a little crazy, but it is useable now that I have my spare battery in it.
My phone is rooted.
My question is:
How is the best way to approach sprint regarding replacement of this phone. Since it didn't get wet, and didn't get dropped I don't think it should be an insurance replacement.
If I have to take the phone to a sprint store, is there a way I can brick this phone so they can't tell it was rooted?
Thanks
A
If it was me, I would go completely back to stock and take it in.
Were you running a SBC kernal that does that trickle charge thing? Might have overcharged the battery.
No need to brick the phone. Just unroot, return to stock rom, and take it in. You are still under warranty. They will likely give you a new phone and battery and charger. If they try to tell you otherwise, talk to a manager. Don't take their crap about making you pay 100 bucks for the insurance deductable, this isnt an insurance issue, its a warranty issue.

SBC K-e-r-n-e-l-s have been around for months and there has been 1-2 users with wild accusations about batteries blowing up with really nothing to back them up.
I am running a Fresh rom, I was also using the wireless tether for about 5 hours straight, I believe that probably had something to do with it.
I was camping and needed to get online for work, I don't usually use the tether that much..

I am almost certain sprint insurence covers water damage. please verify before taking my suggestion. If it does just give your evo a bath and fry it ith water damage! software tampering will be impossible to detect and if it is possible, highly unlikely.
If your going the insurance route, just report it stolen

Water damge and lost or stolen u HAVE to pay the 100$ deductible. Return it to stock and u should get a free replacement or repair.

Warranty has nothing to do with in-store stuff, only pertains to batteries.
Your problem could have been caused by an SBC kernel. As a knowledgeable tech and fellow tinkerer, I'd turn you away if I caught wind of any rooting or flashing.
That being said, if you flash back to stock and unroot, your problem is covered under the ESRP portion of TEP, if you have it.

No, that's insurance fraud, and is illegal.
Exactly. Asurion will cover "any" physical damage, ie rooting phone flashing SBC kernel and the battery exploding. Go to store if they deny ESRP claim you can file ERP claim.

Update:
sorry for the delayed response, I don't seem to get notifications to this thread even though I'm subscribed..
My work hasn't given me the time allowed to unroot my phone and **** with sprint over warranty, I'm just going to file a claim. my last one was July 8th, so this will be my 2nd in a 12 month period and puts me in good shape for further claims if necessary.
Are yall positive I don't need to brick the phone before sending it back to assurion?
They won't care that it has been rooted?
Thanks for all the info, I'll be sure to keep this thread bookmarked, because I'm sure with my luck with phones I may need to follow the un-rooting process in the future..
Also:
They went back and forth about not being able to send me a new battery (which is what damaged the phone in the first place, likely because of the extended wifi tether in a 100+ degree truck), but, alas, the last person to 'process' my claim said they were throwing in a new charger and battery too..
saweet..
any chance I'll still get a new in box phone, or is this Evo way too old for that?
Thanks

Again, NO. That's insurance fraud, and it's illegal. Your phone is out of warranty, and it's broke. That's exactly what insurance is for. Just call them, tell them your phone is broke, and pay your deductible. You do not need to brick your phone, they don't care what the problem is. As long as you have a problem, and you pay the deductible, that's all they care. Intentionally bricking your phone to make a claim is illegal.
They won't care that it has been rooted?

No, Asurion doesn't care. Sprint DOES care, because rooting voids your warranty. But Ausurion isn't sprint, and they dont care.

Umm no. If you left the phone on wifi tether in a hot car in summer for over an hour, then it's YOUR fault it overheated, NOT the battery's fault.

Another "option"
I would reset my Droid...remove the M-SD card and eat (pay) the deductible... I know it is a warranty issue...but sometimes the lost phone scenario is the best way to get around them (Sprint) from asking too many questions about WTF happened to this phone. In whereas lies answers that will not abode well to them on you having the desired outcome; which is a new (refurbished) phone for you.

Sprint service and repair policy FACTS

Copypasta from the Photon forum:
If juggs knows how to flash a pre-rooted on an unlocked phone he hasn't shared it and would much rather post that the workaround is bull****. I'm not really in the mood for this crap. I put up with a lot of BS when working on HDMwIn and FullHDMI. I have deleted the guide, Evo Desktop, Sprint S&R policy threads and other contribs. Don't expect any other projects from me to be posted on xda.

Agreed. Considering the level of experience I have with deving and testing it's even more frustrating as an ISC tech. ISC techs are generally ignored and denied Sprint forum access simply because they don't work at a corporate location.

I agree with this point as well however it can be very difficult and time consuming to dig through the phone to see if it's a corrupt ROM, incompatible app and so on or just user error.
what about if you have a hardware problem (usb port) and you've already taken the phone apart?

If the tamper sticker is missing that puts the burden of proof of "customer tampering" on the service department. Expect the phone to be thoroughly inspected for signs of tampering. If no evidence can be found then it's treated as any other device.
My two questions to you are: Why was the phone disassembled and are the solder points (aka pads) on the board intact? The first one is because I'm curious but the second determines if the device damage is classified as defect (pads intact) or abuse (pads missing or pulled up from the board).

i didn't think to check the usb port while i was inside the phone but i know it's my fault. i used a cheap off-brand car charger one time and ever since then it's been loose.
my question mostly leads to, is it worth it keep my TEP for $7/month when my phone won't be able to be repaired because the tamper sticker is gone and it shows very awesome and visible signs or customer tampering.
once you like do something like that, WHY ON EARTH would you pay 7 bucks a month? LMAO! OMG. lol. However, YOU CAN just say you lost the phone. haha. But if it is a cool tech, maybe he'll cut you some slack if you tell him you'll pay up whatever is needed to fix the issue.
Thanks for the info guys
Sooo, I have a question for you. I've been trying to deal with this for over a week now. The battery life on my Evo has been horrid as of late. I've had the phone for a little under a year now. I'm not exaclty a n00b. I know how to flash ROMs, kernels, ect. Battery life was never really a problem (not the best, but I knew what to expect). I could get around 22-26 hours with moderate use on a normal day. All of a sudden (since flashing a sense 3.0 ROM) my battery life was took a complete dump. I'm lucky to get around 6 hours of use now. The battery drains almost 15% in about 5 minutes after being unplugged from the charger and exponentially after that.
I already unrooted the phone, rooted it again, flashed a new ROM, and nothing seems to help. I took the phone to Sprint and they said the phone and battery checked out perfectly fine. Well, I'm not buying it as obviously something here is not right. If it's not the battery then it's the phone and they should be able to give me a replacement as I'm stil under the 1 year manufacturer warrenty that they do indeed cover correct?
Well, I dropped off the phone today for over 2 hours only to have it returned, not replaced, and told they "updated" it. I'm still having the same exact issue so what do I need to do/tell these people to have the phone replaced!?
Thanks!

To clear some things up. A proper battery test takes 6-8 hours, any store tell you otherwise they're full of it. It's also generally agreed that any ROM/Kernel change needs atleast 2 days of use before you can trust battery life results. In addition, a battery calibration should be the first thing done with a ROM/Kernel change.
I personally feel that if a user flashes a custom ROM/Kernel and it has an adverse and unresolvable effect on the phone that it should not be covered however Sprint rooted phone policy says otherwise. You also have to consider that any replacement will end up being a refurb and I'm not sure how things are where you are but I wouldn't take a refub in my regoin unless I had no choice.

Lokifish Marz said:
2. You are not eligible for replacement/repair because you device is scratched, dirty, or the paint is wearing off
4. TEP, ESRP covers, at no charge: defective/cracked screens with no more than 2 cracks that are less than 1 inch long, mechanical or electrical failure, broken hinge/lens/port (provided the mainboard still functions and in the case of ports, the solder pads are not missing from the board). If you don't have TEP or ESRP or it's $35.
5. TEP/ERP covers device replacement with the payment of a $50 or $100 deductible in the following cases: screen has more than two cracks, screen has cracks more than 1 inch long, liquid damage, housing has more than two cracks, flip assembly or keyboard is separated or missing, total device failure, circuit board damage (like the microusb connector's solder pads missing from the board), smashed, lost/stolen. If you don't have TEP or ERP, you have to buy a new phone.

in reference to # 2,4 and 5. I dropped my phone (EVO 4G) and got it replaced with TEP and paying the $120 deductible about 3 weeks ago. The phone now has a 3/4 of an inch long curved scratch on the screen. (i thought it had gorilla glass) so would this be covered as per # 4 or is it once again a deductible for the phone as outlined in # 5 above.

The screen, as I was told, has a higher silica content than Gorilla Glass so it is more prone to cracks and scratches. The bad part is that scratches, even on the screen, fall under #2.

Updated first post regarding Nexus/Shift replacements for defective Evo's
this is very interesting. I am a care rep, and we always get 90000 different stories about the stores. The real bad ones are the indirect stores... i have heard some horror stories from customers about them that i can hardly even believe... But thank you for clearing some of this up. AND!!! i hope you guys call NSS instead of having the customer calling us when they come into your store with issues.
Lokifish Marz please help!
My EVO is having screen separation issues. It started as light leakage and has gotten worse. When you press the capacitive buttons you can feel the glass move and squeak. I currently do not have tep and was wondering what my options are. The phone is 8 months old. I know there is a signup window for tep for any phone starting August 1st. So if geting my phone repaired or replaced will require tep that would be nice to know. Also since this is a known issue would this qualify them being able to trade up a Nexus s or shift? Thanks for your help!

Screen broken need help

Okay guys... Well Long story short my phones screen doesn't work anymore.
Long story: I was using my phone like usual and when I was finished I put it in my Pocket. I dIdnt realize I had a credit card in that pocket as well, next thing I know I take the phone out and between the screen and the keyboard is the credit card wedged between. I take it out thinking it'll all be fine but when I slide the keyboard Out I hear what sounds like crumbling paper and I look at the back of the phone and there is this black tape looking thing sticking Out From the phone. And now my screen doesn't come on...
I have no warranty I'm just under the one year. What will I have to pay to get this fixed?
I know on inssurance its free but for a new screen its around 50 but what you describe is like you unattatched the whole top half of the phone almost and you'll need a new phone. =[ I think the paper sound is the connection of the display to the phone board.

[Q] How do I short circuit my E4GT? (serious)

Long story short, I flashed a boatloader for the european version of the phone and my phone is bricked.
I want to know how to short circuit my phone without making it look intentional. I am not insured but I do have warrenty, if I short circuit the phone, will they be able to fix it in the sprint store? I am really hoping they don't. I just want a new phone. I was told that I was have to pay a $35 fee to get the phone fixed, what do you guys think? BEst way to short circuit this phone? (Not with water please)
UPDATE:
So my cuz and I went to the sprint store and his friend saw the phone and the first thing he asked if it was rooted, I said yeah. He couldn't fix it, but said he will take care of it when exchanging it and since I didn't have insurance, I had to pay the $35 warranty exchange. Furthermore, I added the insurance with the exhange, I am picking up the exchanged phone tomorrow because it had to be ordered.
Thanks a lot guys for the help.
This is why im glad i have insurance if i brick it its at the bottom of a lake. What warranty. As he said even download mode warns you of the possible warranty voiding. Least expensive option now is probably repair.
Besides the things I'd like to say about this situation, I'll say something else. It won't go into download mode? You could try getting a USB jig and see if that will force it into download mode. I'm holding back the temptation to say something really smartass. This was a very expensive lesson, huh? Sending it in to unbrick it, if all else fails, is your last resort. With a $500 phone, you can't afford NOT to get insurance for it?! Even if you had insurance, you wouldn't get a brand new phone.
I'm not trying to be a ****, so don't take it that way.
im referring to the 1 year warrenty that comes with the phone, it protections against defections in the phone. If I short circuit it, it will be defected... no more useless comments please, don't remind me of what I already know; I know that I should have gotten the insurance, enough said about that.
Would really appreciate it if someone could actually answer my question
newalker, would sprint be able to tell that the phone is rooted if i shorted out to the point that it wont turn on? was thinking about using a 9 volt battery to do so.

If you fry the usb port theyll blame it on you using an aftermarket charger since your stock one is fine. You probably wont be lucky enough to even keep them from checking the rom status. You have a phone capable of being repaired by samsung soon you may have nothing.
The warranty covering defects was voided by a custom rom. The reason they wont honor it after rooting or custom rom is things such as overclocking. Many things can be done via software that would normally be replaced as defective.
If you cant make it so they never find out then all warrantys are null and void period. Truth and fact.
how do I get this 35 dollar exchange done sir? How can I get the 35 dollar exchange w/o them finding out I rooted the phone? :/ been such a stressful week, been bricked for a week. What's the BEST thing I can do right now in my situation?>

If you haven't read these two threads, I'd suggest doing so. Neither thread has lead to a solution yet (other than getting the phone replaced).
help - I did something bad
I screwed up / Installing ICS for international SGS2
Good luck...
I will leave this here as well. This is the SGS2 i9100 USB driver. It is a rar file. You will need to extract it and install. See if Odin will recognize the phone after installing. Please report back....

#1 --- Avoid Flashing Cooked ROMS on your phone...live with stock!!! I do and havn't had any problems at all..
Seems like there are more people complaining about all theses cooked ROMS and how they either work perfectly...or suck some way or another or have tons of glichs.
#2 --- Always, and I mean Always get $8 insurance on a Smartphone, in the long run this will save your ass...big time...
#3 --- People look at the 2 year contact price of the phone...not the really price of the phone (which is $549 I believe) and thats what gets them in trouble...ahhh my phones only $200 or less, I dont need insurance...yet if you break your phone you have a POS brick weight...that will now cost you over $500 to replace...or you could pay $8 a month and if something goes wrong, The Sprint Repair Center will fix it free...or replace it with a refurb unit....Even if you make a claim due to water damage or something, its still cheaper than the $500+ dollars you will have to fork out...

Your one smart guy John. You have helped me a several times with some responses to my questions and I really appreciate it. If your idea works you’ll make a quite a few people happy on here. Seen a handful of these issues with people flashing the Int versions. If this doesn’t work I would use the 9V battery idea and run it across the board.

edit,... not worth the time
This is why you READ, and READ some more!!!
I dare you to bring it to my store. Nothing gets passed a well trained tech. Your best bet is to go to an advanced exchange only store, the reps are not trained like the techs. Pay the 35 and call it a day. As for the microwave comment, solder points get a white residue on them after being microwaved, to a trained tech it looks like corrosion.

Sorry, not to be n [email protected]@hole here, because what happened to you really sucks, but if you screwed up your phone by doing something dangerous without doing proper research (ie: try to flash something designed for the European Galaxy S2 onto an Epic touch), why should Sprint eat the cost and give you a replacement phone? I mean you are basically asking for a way to cheat Sprint.
Something to consider. I really do feel for you and hope somehow someone comes up with a fix.
the best easy to do what ur asking and not get caught would be to take a fully charged 18v battery from a drill, 2 wires either stripped on both end or to make it easier put alligator crimps.on each end and hook the battery to the terminals on back of phone where battery usually touches and then hit the power button on your phone. it will leave no trace and even if it does get powered up its well enough outside the read parameters to where nobody can catch it. ive seen this done already to atleast 7 or 8 phones. have fun

So sprint covers rooted phones but doesn't cover physically damaged phones......try telling the truth and not being an idiot and listening to almost anyone else here. 9v battery? Really?

Aren't you able to add insurance on your phone at any time??

Yes you can but it would look suspicious if the phone needed work shortly after the insurance kicked in.

[Q] Omaha Jig

Is there anyone in the Omaha NE area that has a jig? I lost mine, bricked after using calk's format all (don't ask me how) and can't get another one until Tuesday night. I might be able to survive but with the next 2 days off, I may not. Does anyone in the area have a jig that they would be willing to lend out for a half hour or so?
Make one if you need one asap. I don't know where the link is but there's a YouTube video for them too. There was a how to post somewhere in this section months ago. I think once you know which wires go to what pins on the connector, it's just a matter of a resistor or two across specific leads and you're done.

ezzie, I'm in Bellevue. I don't have a jig but I found this video....it looks pretty simple. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jKRrTZayRxU#!
You can't get your phone into download mode?
Nope, it is well and truly bricked. i found that video too, but I'm afraid I'll do something wrong and screw it up worse. I don't really trust my soldering skills. Thanks for the link, I just need to learn how to be patient. (not one of my strong suits!)
Things can get worse than a brick?
oh yeah. I think they may refer to this as a cement brick. even a jig isn't bringing my baby back. On the up side if anyone in the Omaha area ever needs a jig, I'm your girl. I decided to get a spare this time, too bad it didn't save me this time.:crying:
Give Samsung a call and tell them it just stopped turning on, they will send you a label in your email that you can print for 2 day shipping to have it repaired. Send it to them and you should have it back in about a month, maybe sooner. My repair has been on hold waiting for parts for 2 weeks now but it will be repaired and get expedited return shipping.

A little off topic...but which sprint store do you go to for your repairs? I have the best luck at 114th street and dodge. But for the most part, they are all douche bags!

You could send it into that place that can jtag, replace power button and USB port. Their prices looked cheaper than paying the insurance deductable of a hundred bucks. www.mobiletechvideos.com A lot of people have good things to say about them.
Got my E4GT back from Samsung the other day. Well not MY E4GT but because my repair was on hold for 2 weeks they sent me a brand new E4GT with overnight shipping.
If you haven't figured out what you are doing with your brick I would suggest sending it in to Samsung for repair since it is warrantied for 1 year. Either way you have a brick, pay mobiletechvideos to JTAG or you can go the repair route.
