[Q] Root after 2.2.1 update - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have foolishly accepted the 2.2.1 update (I wasnt previously rooted or had S-Off) so am safe in that my phone isnt knacked but does this now mean I cant root? (at least not for now....or indeed the forseeable future)?

if you want root you should read up here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_G2
and also here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855764

The 1.72 OTA update on a Desire Z ? If so then yes, unfortunately you are locked out of root for now. If you already had full radio S-OFF via gfree, then you can downgrade. Otherwise you are stuck, for now at least.

Bear in mind that any replacement phone might well already have the update on it anyway.

And considering HTC's track record on updates you will have a hard time rooting again if you update to official froyo

no, but the hboot is différent, i have read and compare the code with hboot 0.80.

so it's best to stay rooted instead of updating to the official froyo?

What's the safest guide?

Sup guys just got my G2 and I'm set to perm root it. Just a quick question though,
with all the different guides and the wiki which is the most thorough and safest?
I'm not new to android or rooting. I've owned and rooted a G1, N1, and a MT3GS.
So I don't necessarily need a noob guide. Which method do you say is the best?
Definetly the rage method. Visionary is quite dangerous and a lot of people ended up semi-bricking their phones. Not sure about this gfree a lot of people are talking about is.... just go with rage aka the method in the wiki.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
Use the Wiki. The Wiki uses the rage exploit for temp root, then gfree to lock in that root (permanent) and to get full radio S-OFF, SuperCID and SIM unlock.

I feel like this is going to be the stupidest question but is the "wiki" you refer to the xda-developerscom/wiki?
Meaning refer to the HTC Vision section, and once inside the "Rooting the Vision (G2/DZ) and DHD" guide?

"official" updates from tmobile or any other service provider or the hardware vendor... are DANGEROUS. They may make it difficult/impossible to reroot.
Note that despite htc/tmobile having NOT provider a 2.3 image for vision, you can, nevertheless, use 2.3 on vision. Community is faster than OEM.

No, what he is saying is that you still get the OTA updates. But you will likely need to re-root if you install them.

I thought that you couldn't even receive the via an OTA. And if you did, the Clockwork Recovery would block them from installing, right?

Tried to downgrade, but keep getting a Model ID error, so I can't downgrade... was doing the downgrade instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261 but I'm stuck at step 11, which is installing that lower version rom.... tried to create goldcard, still no... was reading further and maybe a little info should help
Bought phone, rooted through visionary... and that's it... no s-off, no supercid, etc... so I guess I'm screwed (or stuck with this) until they get a workaround about this... am I right? or can I still downgrade?
Whoa, I think I was able to downgrade using the official 1.34 update posted here on XDA... I'm not sure if I can root and s-off, but I'd do my best to see if I can....
Android version:
2.2
Baseband:
12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.18_M3
Kernel:
2.6.32.21 Oct 18 2010
Build:
1.34.66.1
eff yeah, I think I got root and s-off (I don't care about sim unlock, I "unlocked" my phone way back already, where I had to pay and didn't know I can unlock this for free)
gotta check it out now, will report back
** what I did, well, I did the tutorials, and failed.... did a little bit of research and said that I can "probably" downgrade by "updating" to an older version,... so I went ahead and tried,.. I downloaded the 1.34 posted here at XDA, and installed it on the PC.. it went through it's thing... phone restarded like new, went through the setup, checked "about phone" and I did downgrade to 1.34... so now, not wasting anytime did the rooting and s-off process.... WIN!

Downgrading to FROYO

Yes, it can be done. There is an RUU floating around, and I just successfully downgraded. That said, while recovery was removed, S-OFF was NOT removed.
What I do not know is how this would affect those who did OTA or the .3 release. I did flash down though from Gingersense.
More to come, as I now have to read about how to get Clockwork Recovery back into place.. That's critical now.
EDIT: Blah.. Just FYI, it doesn't look like the RUU I was using was the stock release. But it's Froyo regardless.
EDIT 2: Big Blah.. If you're S-ON, it won't work. Works fine if you're S-OFF though.
What was the name of the file?

Looks like 1.34.605.4 is the stock release, but I'm not positive.
And I'm back to where I was before I ran the RUU. Everything appears to work. No issues getting CWM recovery back on.
This may be an option for those who went OTA and want to get root...they just might not have it with OTA.

dunno, just called Verizon and getting a replacement, i hope it doesn't have gingerbread on it - that would be sweet.
Ok. I'm wondering if this will work. My incredible 2 has 2.3.3 with HBOOT of .97. Now AlpharevX works with that HBOOT its just that it can't can't get root because of gingerbread. Would downgrading to froyo fix this? Love this phone. Hate the ****ing bloat.

It looks like it's an issue of security checking. If you could get it downgrade to Froyo, then it should work. But because of S-ON, it won't downgrade. At least, that's the best I can figure.
So the solution would be to just wait until GB gets S-OFF?

Yes. For whatever reason, despite being signed updates, HTC and/or Verizon won't let you downgrade the device. It worked for me because I was S-OFF already though, so it's a "security" issue.
I also have s-off on mine but after I got it I did factory reset and then it downloaded and installed update while it was charging and i never knew untill i looked and was like o crap it updated by itself so i hope this works.

Damn that really sucks. This is exactly what happened to my sister. I wonder, when did pushing updates with no confirmation become okay? I thought the OTA needs your permission to install?

install OTA update?

Hi all,
I am new here after retiring my broke dinc 1 and getting a replacement dinc2 from Asurion. I am still completely stock except for a hack on the phone to allow me to tether (no download was required).
My phone currently has software # 5.10605.9 and I was not able to run the s-off tool. I read there is an ICS OTA due soon so I thought I would just wait for that before going s-off or rooting. My only immediate need for root is so I can have Nandroid and Titanium backups. The sooner the better for that but I can wait for stock ICS before considering any custom ROMs.
I have an OTA update now that I have rejected. It says :
ADR6350_6.01.605.05-5.10.605.9
I assume this would upgrade me to 6.01.605.05 So should I let it install?
Thanks!
If you want to root/s-off dont apply that update!! You loose the ability to until you downgrade the software again which is a pain in the ass. As for not being able to currently get s-off you're gonna have to wait for some other people here to help, they can help you troubleshoot the problem.

Thanks Triscuit,
That is what I suspected from looking around the forum. What confuses me is that I already could not run the Revolution s-off. If i don't have that latest firmware why can't I s-off now? Is it more a root issue?
You have to downgrade to 2.3.3 and hboot 97 first.

If I wait for the ICS update with this issue go away or is the downgrade going to remain a necessity to root and s-off?
Each OTA is making s-off much more difficult. Honestly, I would downgrade your. 98hboot & s-off now. We have a very stable ICS sense 4 ROM.

Thanks, I will take your advice. Just to be certain, the warnings about not downgrading due to bootloops is for those who have the 6.01.605.05 installed so I should be fine?
That's not an issue anymore. It was in the beginning. But it was a problem that occurred after downgrading and s-off. So how knows if the ICS ota will be worse or even down-gradable.
Great, question resolved. I will happily be going s-off and rooting soon. As always the XDA community comes through for me. Thanks guys!
Actually being on the newest firmware is still an issue. Once you have been on the most recent OTA you have to run the most recent radio to run any Sense rom. The 0312 radio really sucks and does not have near as good of reception as previous ones. Do as these guys have said S Off and root now. This way you dont have to worry about it and by all means dont take the ICS OTA when or if it ever comes. Im sure once its out it wont take long before we have a flashable version.
