Yes, it can be done. There is an RUU floating around, and I just successfully downgraded. That said, while recovery was removed, S-OFF was NOT removed.
What I do not know is how this would affect those who did OTA or the .3 release. I did flash down though from Gingersense.
More to come, as I now have to read about how to get Clockwork Recovery back into place.. That's critical now.
EDIT: Blah.. Just FYI, it doesn't look like the RUU I was using was the stock release. But it's Froyo regardless.
EDIT 2: Big Blah.. If you're S-ON, it won't work. Works fine if you're S-OFF though.

Looks like 1.34.605.4 is the stock release, but I'm not positive.
And I'm back to where I was before I ran the RUU. Everything appears to work. No issues getting CWM recovery back on.
This may be an option for those who went OTA and want to get root...they just might not have it with OTA.

Does this downgrade HBOOT so you can root the device? I just picked up a new Incredible 2 on Craigslist, 2 days old. Came with Gingerbread installed

dunno, just called Verizon and getting a replacement, i hope it doesn't have gingerbread on it - that would be sweet.
Ok. I'm wondering if this will work. My incredible 2 has 2.3.3 with HBOOT of .97. Now AlpharevX works with that HBOOT its just that it can't can't get root because of gingerbread. Would downgrading to froyo fix this? Love this phone. Hate the ****ing bloat.
Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk
It looks like it's an issue of security checking. If you could get it downgrade to Froyo, then it should work. But because of S-ON, it won't downgrade. At least, that's the best I can figure.
So the solution would be to just wait until GB gets S-OFF?

Yes. For whatever reason, despite being signed updates, HTC and/or Verizon won't let you downgrade the device. It worked for me because I was S-OFF already though, so it's a "security" issue.
I also have s-off on mine but after I got it I did factory reset and then it downloaded and installed update while it was charging and i never knew untill i looked and was like o crap it updated by itself so i hope this works.

I'm sending my Incredible back to Verizon for a new Inc. but I'm rooted with the new update. Want should I do so they don't know I rooted this phone. OK just check my phone I guest when I did the official update it unrooted me. I' still S-OOF. But I got to go back to original stock before I sent the phone back my phone should get to me in 2 days. So I need to put back 2.1 and S-ON.
Have you done unrevoked forever and turned off the S-off, if so you should probably not send it in.
The best thing you can do is look for the stock 2.0 firmware. Also look on YouTube for a unroot video. I have unrooted and re-rooted this phone so it can be done.
Sent from my Rooted Droid Incredible
I'm S-OOF right know. So I should go back to S-ON and try to find 2.0 rom. Where can I find the right programs to this before 2 days.
I'll help you out.
It does NOT matter if you send the phone back with 2.1 or 2.2, they don't care.
They care about two things you need to worry about.
turning it back to S-ON
and having the stock recovery.
to achieve this. You MUST be rooted to do S-OFF or S-ON, so first off get rooted if your not. Then visit unrevoked
the unrevoked3 is for root, unrevoked forever is S-ON, S-OFF.
once you are rooted, follow the instructions to turn it back to S-ON. **(the same exact way you turned it to S-OFF, but using the new S-ON file.)**
Once this is completed now you will have S-ON, but you are still rooted, and have the ClockworkMod recovery. You need to un-root by downgrading using the 2.1 OR 2.2 RUU. your pick and like mentioned above. don't matteh. This will get you to have the stock recovery, and S-ON. Go in that order. Hope you get it. Peace.
If your S-OFF then you are screwed. There is no way to turn it back on. You are SOL man. You can always restore it to factory but the S-OFF will ALWAYS remain

Unless there has been a break though in getting HTC's and Verizon's super secret security code then I doubt it. The reason its called unrevoked forever is because there is no way to turn it back on. Check other posts in the xda to prove my point. If you return a S-off phone you will void the return and have to pay full price for the new one.

Also, the reason its called forever is because it forever allows our phones to truly be ours, unlocked and how it should be.

Download S-ON file from unrEVOked's website and run that so that you get S-ON back onto the phone.
Then download either the 2.1 or 2.2 RUU (find them in the Android Development Section) and run that and it will wipe the phone and bring it back to factory state.
If it says your phone is not found when using the RUU, try downloading the HTC Sync software for the Incredible and installing that first. You need the drivers for "MY HTC" on the computer for the RUU to recognize it and HTC Sync will install that for you. I had that issue, but remedied it with the HTC Sync software install first.

I was Flashing the OTA 2.2 Froyo Leak a while ago and it just didnt finish for some reason. Now when I try to turn it on it Vibrates 5 times and has a green blinking light.
Also it is S-ON now for some reason as well.
I have looked everywhere and cannot find a solotion.
Any help is appreciated.
Edit* I have tried flashing other roms and still nothing, (I can access HBOOT but not Recovery) and I cannot flash recovery either. Everything but Hboot is gone. And i tried flashin Ruu and it says main system too old.
5 Vibrates is usually some kind of hardware issue, where-as 3 vibrates is usually a software issue.
BTW, if you're S-On, how are you going to flash any recovery or ROMs? You need to be S-Off before you can flash anything.

this is EXTREMELY weird. I had the phone plugged in because I wanted to root, but i was first getting the SD Card files off and when I unplugged the phone the same thing happened already....
So then I plugged the phone on again, went into HBOOT and ran the image until it told me it cant be read, and rebooted and back to normal....
Any idea what happened? I just wanna get opinions out of curiosity.

Like I said previously, 5 vibrates is usually a hardware issue, meaning you're most likely going to have to send it in for replacement. There's been a few people to recover from a 5-vibrate brick, but they had gotten lucky. You can search the forums and try to find how they fixed it (can't remember the thread off hand, just do a search for 5 vibrates and you'll get lots of results).

That said, it's a pretty safe bet that it's being worked on. Remember, it was only about 3 weeks ago that they achieved S-off on 2.2. It was just bad timing that the 2.3 OTA came out pretty much at the same time. My phone came with 2.2 last week, my wife's just arrived with 2.3.
I just went in to the irc channel today what it comes down to is multiple devices that have gb are not able to be rooted so I'm sure its being worked on but I wish we at least had a way to revert back to froyo so we could root and then update for now it is just a waiting game

Let me confirm since some people are indicating different things.
I know you can get s-off on gingerbread using xtc clip. Does that allow you to install cwm, roms, kernel? If it is possible, wouldnt that also mean you are rooted?

There's two parts to the answer, and they're both yes.
You need root to be able to turn s-off with software. With s-off, you can install CWM, and with CWM, you can flash already rooted kernels and roms. So with a clip, you get s-off and can install CWM, but at that point, you're not rooted. But you can just flash an already rooted kernel and you're good to go.
So to do it in software, you need root to get s-off. But if you take the hardware route (because you're stuck on unrootable 2.3), you need s-off to ultimately get root.
Make sense?

Very clear, thanks.
So I just got a droid incredible 2 and was planning to run revolutionary on it to get S-OFF and root it. I tried to get started but apparently I have HBOOT .98 rather than the supported .97.
Does anyone know if the latest OTA is to blame for this or something about new dinc2's?
Is there a way to downgrade HBOOTs?
No, you cannot downgrade, not without root anyway, which you cannot get since it's not supported yet (see here). No clue when it will be, and I doubt anyone else does either
Didn't this forum already go through this once already before the GB root was available? Feels like deja vu
Wow, that was quick... Verizon must've already had a batch of new Dinc2's already updated and shipped before they did the OTA update a few days ago... .98 Hboot is what is coming in the latest OTA updates.
Looking like a new wave of XtcClip buyers again till the Devs can achieve S-Off again for the .98 Hboot.
So not knowing anything about HBOOT, besides the version, I know the Desire S is supported on HBOOT version .98.
Are these completely different or the same across all HTC phones?
I don't know if it has been confirmed that HTC clip supports .98 hboot either. but hopefully it works!
Will the HBOOT .98 ever be unlocked? I just got the INC2 and it automatically installed when I left the house for a few minutes!!!! Is it possible someone will unlock this?? I got the phone mainly so I can OC it and put on custom roms, WTF!! (

DInc II arrived on Friday.
I got soo lucky when I pushed customer service to give me an early upgrade.
It cost a total of $99.99 billed in Oct.
I worked real hard at rooting it, and come Monday I see it payed off.
I'm sure that it is only a matter of time that devs will discover, test, test and distribute the magic that they are soo good at.
I tried to donate to them but PayPal or AMEX was not an option and it has been so long that I looked at a money order that I don't think it would be worth the $0.60 USD + a postage stamp to mess with it.
Does any one know of a NORMAL way to donate to AlphaRevX or Revolutionary?
I plan on trying to get another DInc II in January (if it is still around).
me too
+1 stuck with S-ON and the 0.98.0000 HBOOT from OTA...
FYI
I just sent my Dinc2 in for warranty and the replacement has Hboot .97
now that XTC clips (everyone) are now unlimited, from beta to actual unlimited clips, so should try to find one.
Im pretty sure alpharev is working on s off for our 98 hboot they where asking for just that hboot or a link to the ota.... Pretty good sign

Workaround for 2.3.4?
Apologies if this post outs me as a total noob, but I'm only a week into my budding love affair with the DInc2 and Android, and I've already made one stupid misstep, as my phone came with HBOOT .97, and I foolishly took the OTA, realizing about a day later that yes, I would like to root this phone.
Being impatient, I was googling around to see if there were any solutions, when I found a link to a guide to unroot the Incredible 2 (which apparently I'm not allowed to link to yet). Basically, what this guide does is reflash the phone to 2.2 via an official signed update package (which should be able to be dropped on the SD card of the phone and flashed via the power/volume down method), gain temp root and manually reflash the HBOOT with .97 (via a dd command), and then upgrades (via another package to be flashed from the SD card, not OTA) to 2.3.3. At that point, I believe I could use the current version of revolutionary to gain S-Off, root the phone via the normal method, and be set to go.
Now, my question: is this going to result in a bricked device or a lot of wasted effort? Can the phone even take a signed update from the SD card without being S-Off? And will it trip me up when I try to flash to 2.2 because it's older than what's currently on the phone? Has anyone thought to try this? Waiting for Revolutionary to update is probably the smarter course of action, but I am one to push the limits of the technology around me, so unless someone out there knows that this won't work, I'll likely give it a go.
You will need to update to 2.3.3 leaked ruu to s-off anyways

Waiting for Revolutionary to update is probably the smarter course of action, but I am one to push the limits of the technology around me, so unless someone out there knows that this won't work, I'll likely give it a go.

Nevermind lol.
Hi all,
I am new here after retiring my broke dinc 1 and getting a replacement dinc2 from Asurion. I am still completely stock except for a hack on the phone to allow me to tether (no download was required).
My phone currently has software # 5.10605.9 and I was not able to run the s-off tool. I read there is an ICS OTA due soon so I thought I would just wait for that before going s-off or rooting. My only immediate need for root is so I can have Nandroid and Titanium backups. The sooner the better for that but I can wait for stock ICS before considering any custom ROMs.
I have an OTA update now that I have rejected. It says :
ADR6350_6.01.605.05-5.10.605.9
I assume this would upgrade me to 6.01.605.05 So should I let it install?
Thanks!
If you want to root/s-off dont apply that update!! You loose the ability to until you downgrade the software again which is a pain in the ass. As for not being able to currently get s-off you're gonna have to wait for some other people here to help, they can help you troubleshoot the problem.

Thanks Triscuit,
That is what I suspected from looking around the forum. What confuses me is that I already could not run the Revolution s-off. If i don't have that latest firmware why can't I s-off now? Is it more a root issue?
You have to downgrade to 2.3.3 and hboot 97 first.

If I wait for the ICS update with this issue go away or is the downgrade going to remain a necessity to root and s-off?
Each OTA is making s-off much more difficult. Honestly, I would downgrade your. 98hboot & s-off now. We have a very stable ICS sense 4 ROM.

Thanks, I will take your advice. Just to be certain, the warnings about not downgrading due to bootloops is for those who have the 6.01.605.05 installed so I should be fine?
That's not an issue anymore. It was in the beginning. But it was a problem that occurred after downgrading and s-off. So how knows if the ICS ota will be worse or even down-gradable.
Great, question resolved. I will happily be going s-off and rooting soon. As always the XDA community comes through for me. Thanks guys!
Actually being on the newest firmware is still an issue. Once you have been on the most recent OTA you have to run the most recent radio to run any Sense rom. The 0312 radio really sucks and does not have near as good of reception as previous ones. Do as these guys have said S Off and root now. This way you dont have to worry about it and by all means dont take the ICS OTA when or if it ever comes. Im sure once its out it wont take long before we have a flashable version.

Thanks Zack, that is what I will do. Haven't checked since I got the phone a month or 2 ago but what is the latest/recommended tool. I was planning on using Revolution for s-off based on what I saw before. There are usually multiple tools available for rooting.
BTW- love your neck of the woods. I lived in Blowing Rock for a short time.
You have to downgrade first. I like this thread:
