You could try that...

Oh yea, on Windows, just start the install, it loads the drivers first, then when it starts in for the program, click cancel.... that way you get the drivers without the VZW access manager.

Thread should probably be moved to Q&A forum.

[Q] Rooting help.

Hey guys. I have an Incredible, and I have been rooted over a year now. I'm helping a friend root his Evo, and it's proving to be a hassle. Unrevoked will not find the phone. It keeps saying "Waiting for device". I'm on Mac OSX 10.6, USB debugging is enabled, Froyo, HBOOT 2.10.0001, Radio 2.15.00.11.19.
Any ideas/help would be great.
Are you using the unrevoked version that you used to root your DInc? If so, you cannot. Go to unrevoked.com and specifically select the one for the EVO 4G.

Are you using unrevoked3 or unrevoked forever? Also, does your friend's device password protected? If so, make sure it is disables until you're finished. Does your Mac detect the device outside of unrevoked?

try to unplug the phone and replug it this worked for me. Each time i have rooted has been different. Also did you boot the phone intu HBOOT USB first to allow the computer to reconize it before launching the reflash utility?

It is Unrevoked3. His phone does does not have a password. And my Mac detects it if I mount the SD card.
UPDATE: According to the unrevoked FAQ, if the program hangs on Mac waiting for the phone, setting the phone to "Disk Drive" instead of "charge only" helps.

Maybe.....I rooted a Droid Incredible and my EVO 4G using unrevoked3 on my MacBook without a hitch. You can always redownload a fresh copy of reflash from Unrevoked and start over. Just be patient. It'll eventually take.

I know! When I rooted my Inc it took like 20 seconds. After I told him that he let me try and as time went by I think he started to worry. I currently don't have access to it til tomorrow, ill try mounting and waiting, and going through hboot.

Problems rooting Incredible

I rooted my phone with no issues, but I can't get my brother's to take.
I have debugging enabled, I have it in charge only, htc sync is not installed on the computer, and I am running Windows 7. I installed the hboot drivers, run unrevoked3, it does its thing, but then it says "failed to flash recovery image". Then the phone reboots and works like normal. It does not get S-Off and there is no recovery. What's going on? His is an SLCD.
It did that once when I rooted a friends inc. Just retried it and it worked fine.

I have never been able to use Windows 7 to use Unrevoked to get root. I have always had to use an Ubuntu live cd to get it to take.

I tried 3 times with the same result every time. I know windows 7 used to be a problem, but I figured they fixed that issue. Is there anything else that would be causing this?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
With Windows it's all about the drivers that are installed, and making the proper satanic sacrifices.
Give the Ubuntu live CD a try, since it wont have to worry about windows drivers, couple other people I work with had to go that route because Windows was being a pain.

You don't have to install anything. You can run the OS from the CD itself.
Sent from my Droid Incredible running CM7.0.3.
Try hard reset & then unrevoked. I had the same issues until I did this.
The problem is he doesn't want to lose all his apps/game data. He about lost it when his SD card was unreadable - though I was able to fix it.
I appreciate all the suggestions. If it comes down to it, I will just do the hard reset.
With the ubuntu CD, I can just run the OS from the CD, download Unrevoked from within ubuntu, then run it?

I read that suggested on androidforums as well... The instructions say to keep it on charge only, so that's why I didn't try 'disk drive'. Seems logical to try that though...

[Q] Can't Odin: Computer doesn't recognize the device

What can I do if the computer isn't recognizing the my device?
Rebooted the computer
Redownloaded the drivers (at least I think I did)
Tried with a brand-new cable from Radio Shack
Anything else that could be tried?
Running bamboozle 1.1 on EF02 modem. Does the modem matter? Will it help if I do a nandroid restore from another modem?
Thanks to all!
Try to reinstall the drivers again. Try different USB ports and make sure your phone is in debug mode.

Drivers for Odin are not installd automatically unless someone put together a complete set. With USB debugging on connect to your computer. Go to Control panel>system>device manager and under USB go to Android Samsung. Hit update drivers through windows update and wait for it to find and install all 5 drivers. Takes over a half an hour.

Because Odin needs the drivers that are loaded with usb debugging on as I mentioned in my post to you. Dude, if you are not going to try what we suggest exactly as we suggest it why do you post asking for help? Not to mention there have been like 30 other threads exactly like this. If you don't have all 5 drivers loaded you will not connect to Odin.

I'm not the one with the odin problem from the op. I just suggested a fix I've been using recently because of a nagging problem I've had. I don't enable usb debugging, yet I get all the drivers to load.

Hmmm...it's possible it loaded the drivers previously and the extra needed drivers for Odin were already on your computer. Unless you loaded it from a driver package that had them all. If so a link to those drivers would be helpful to the OP since I don't think he has all the drivers needed.

Try This.
Sometimes, only 1 port will get the proper recognition...
As I odin'd to EG22 today. I had my old laptop not recognize my phone, after trying all ports, and checking each, uninstalling, reinstalling, scanning for plug and play devices in device manager with little luck. Anyway, I ended up using my dad's awesome Win 7 laptop, no issues, recognized immediately after installing the samsung drivers.
If another laptop/desktop is not an option for you, try different ports, also, have device manager open, go down to usb ports, and uninstall the 'unknown device' and just scan for plug and play.
Device Manager is found by typing it in on Vista or Seven. And on XP by going to Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->System-->Select the Hardware Tab--> Click on the Device Manager Button. Enjoy and I hope I helped.
for some reason I only one USB port that i can use. The other 3 will not work at all. This is on a Dell laptop.

[Q] Manually update EVO4G without root?

I was handed down an EVO4G after my friend upgraded to an iPhone. Playing around with the EVO, I've realized that it's never been updated and is still on Android 2.1. I've tried to update OTA, but it does not find any updates, I'm assuming because the EVO is no longer connected to Sprint's network (yet, I'm still connected through wi-fi).
I don't want to root the phone because the screen is cracked and my friend still has TEP, but I still want to have Gingerbread on my phone. I've tried searching and reading around XDA, but I can't seem to find anything about updating to Gingerbread without having to root.
Should I try this?

Download this 2.3 gb ruu to your PC and hookup your phone via USB and run like any other program and follow instructions. The reason I'm giving you the 2.3 and not the 2.3.5 which is the latest evo update is because its less of a hassle to root when you're ready.

Downloaded an OTA update.zip file on my SD card as well and Recovery would not let me either.
