[Q] Manually update EVO4G without root? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was handed down an EVO4G after my friend upgraded to an iPhone. Playing around with the EVO, I've realized that it's never been updated and is still on Android 2.1. I've tried to update OTA, but it does not find any updates, I'm assuming because the EVO is no longer connected to Sprint's network (yet, I'm still connected through wi-fi).
I don't want to root the phone because the screen is cracked and my friend still has TEP, but I still want to have Gingerbread on my phone. I've tried searching and reading around XDA, but I can't seem to find anything about updating to Gingerbread without having to root.
Should I try this?

Download this 2.3 gb ruu to your PC and hookup your phone via USB and run like any other program and follow instructions. The reason I'm giving you the 2.3 and not the 2.3.5 which is the latest evo update is because its less of a hassle to root when you're ready.

Thanks again! Already bookmarked.
Just as a recap, I should make the phone go into the bootloader by pressing the power button and down on the volume rocker, then I can run the RUU.exe?

No need, just connect via USB to PC and run the ruu like any other PC program.

Tried to run the RUU and it would not connect to EVO. :C
Downloaded an OTA update.zip file on my SD card as well and Recovery would not let me either.
Man, am I stuck on 2.1 forever?

Best method?

Just wondering if you guys can tell me what's the best method of rooting my phone with hardware 003 Hboot 2.10 ? Sprint sent me a refurbished phone because my other EVO died.
Unrevoked, I think it works for all evos. Google it or search xda. I can't post the link
We're comin from a pure power source.
Search feature ftw...Anyway as of today, EVERY Evo can be rooted with unrevoked 3 don't let anyone tell you otherwise
The last time I tried unrevoked I got a error saying something was missing and didn't work. I'll download and give a try again, Thanks for the responses

Just follow those instructions, and you'll be good. Just be sure to have the hboot drivers installed correctly.
I used unrevoked, worked great for me. I'm new to flashing roms and it was easy. Just google it and download it from their site. Happy rooting!

Hmm. So you installed the hboot drivers successfully? You have USB Debugging checked, right? There are a number of things that can interfere with the Unrevoked process, such as HTC Sync, Anti Virus Programs, PDAnet, doubletwist, etc etc. Basically, you want to be sure that there are no programs running that can communicate with your phone or interfere with it when it's plugged in, other than the Unrevoked program. Be sure all other things are disabled. Also, which version of Unrevoked are you using? Just to be sure, it's the newest one, correct? Version 3.32, right? ( http://downloads.unrevoked.com/recovery/3.32/reflash_package.exe ) Once you've confirmed all of those things, try running Unrevoked a second time, and see if you have success. I've used unrevoked a number of times, and it's succeeded for me every time, it should definitely work.
Edit: And I just double checked the links in the thread I linked you to earlier, and the download links are current and up to date. So if you downloaded from that link, then you are on the current Unrevoked version of 3.32. So that answers that question. I would temporarily disable your anti virus, be sure that no other programs that can interfere are running, and try running Unrevoked again.
~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v2.4 (works with all US EVOs)(3/12/11)
I believe autoroot works with ALL evos. I've used it to flash several evos flawlessly. Make sure you have htc sync and the android SDK installed before you do to ensure you have all the necessary drivers.
[Q] Rooting help.
Hey guys. I have an Incredible, and I have been rooted over a year now. I'm helping a friend root his Evo, and it's proving to be a hassle. Unrevoked will not find the phone. It keeps saying "Waiting for device". I'm on Mac OSX 10.6, USB debugging is enabled, Froyo, HBOOT 2.10.0001, Radio 2.15.00.11.19.
Any ideas/help would be great.
Are you using the unrevoked version that you used to root your DInc? If so, you cannot. Go to unrevoked.com and specifically select the one for the EVO 4G.
try to unplug the phone and replug it this worked for me. Each time i have rooted has been different. Also did you boot the phone intu HBOOT USB first to allow the computer to reconize it before launching the reflash utility?
It is Unrevoked3. His phone does does not have a password. And my Mac detects it if I mount the SD card.
UPDATE: According to the unrevoked FAQ, if the program hangs on Mac waiting for the phone, setting the phone to "Disk Drive" instead of "charge only" helps.
Need advice please
I've been trying to root my incredible for some time now. I first tried back in February and got a back up cid missing error message, after searching the Internet for answers and coming up with nothing I decided to wait for unrevoked to get updated. So recently I decided since I haven't got 2.3 I would try again still getting same errors, I've tried 3 different computers. I at a lost as to what to do. Any suggestions?
I would try flashing the stock Verizon 2.2 Froyo RUU from your computer and then try to root again. Make sure you have the USB debugging checked in menu/settings/applications/development before you try to root. That's what I would start with.
Also what OS are you using to do this?
This was my last step that I tried last night before bed. I downloaded the zip from Doug piston and renamed it PB31IMG, booting into hboot nothing happened. By that point my battery was dying so I gave up for the day. This morning I used astro to double check the zip. It was listed as PB31IMG only so I tried to rename it PB31IMG.zip. Astro said that file already exists so I left it as is. I tried hboot again and it says something so fast I can hardly read it. I tried to read it about 20 times but it happens so fast, I think I need to video it so I can pause it. But what I could make out it was looking for something other than PB31IMG.zip
You may have to install the Android driver manually. I had to when I rooted my Incredible. For some reason when Unrevoked tried to do it, it failed. But it installed fine when I ran the standalone driver installer.
if you had been reading up on rooting and really doing your research then you should have learned that you never accept an update right when it comes out because you lose the ability to root until a fix is found (and it often takes some time).
Here's what I came up with. Still may do a video. Hope it makes sense, it was very early/late when I wrote this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458491
Slightly off this topic, but along the same lines, so I didn't want to start another thread.
I rooted back in November, prior to the latest OTA update - and had a pretty good understanding of what I was doing - I think.. heh
I NEVER flashed a new ROM, Kernel, Radio, etc. Only backedup, rooted, removed some bloatware, and that's it.
I still have superuser su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip (I think?) in my root folder of my SD Card. Nothing else.
I backed up my Nandroid to my computer, as well as all the TitaniumPro backups of bloatware.
I saw Brad560's two posts - both Barebones and Stock ROM's.
In the Stock post, he listed Deodex'ed, Odexed, and Original UnRooted ROM. This confused me, as I'm still trying to wrap my head around the flashing part. Then I saw a reply about Radios?
I think at this point, I definitely want to remain rooted, but would like the "official" release from HTC/Sprint (in root form, stable, as close to the original as possible, for now).
Which ROM should I grab?
Will I need to flash a new kernel? I don't have any desire to overclock or anything.
And will I need to update the Radios separately?
Thanks, sincerely appreciate any help.
Just read in brads thread and all your answers will be there.
Thanks for replying.
I have read it. That's the first time I had heard of those things, which is why I asked here.
I think some folks forget what's it like to learn this stuff.. and while many here have been around for awhile and have absorbed over time, there are people like me (a military pilot btw lol) who has a tough time grasping some of the verbiage. I had the rooting thing down. Flashing a ROM seemed easy enough, though hadn't done it. Then someone throws up 3 versions in that post and 2 in the other. I get his barebones stuff - for the most part - he stripped stuff out.
Anyway, I suppose I will take the plunge and pick one of the ROMs, then suppose flash the latest radios.
Thanks!
For the time being, only way to "root"/unlock is via HTCDEV method which requires you be connected to your computer via USB sync cable.
