Help rooting after update to 2.3.5? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I've been wanting to root for a while now but never did, so I could read up on it more. If anyone knows how to root my Evo 4g after today's update to 2.3.5 I would be very greatful. Thanks everyone very much.

Actually just came to my senses if you have hboot needed for revolutionary then you should be fine I believe it was 2.16 and 2.15. To check your hboot pull battery out hold power button and volume down at the same time

Nah h-boot version like 2.18.000. After the new upgrade.

seems like another htc gotcha! so if your not rooted before the ota, and you updated, no root/unlocking for now i think is the consensus.

if you had been reading up on rooting and really doing your research then you should have learned that you never accept an update right when it comes out because you lose the ability to root until a fix is found (and it often takes some time).

just tried htcdev method to unlock phone. phone now shows unlocked. success with booting twrp recovery, will try to flash rom utilizing same method as EVO 3D users with HBOOT 1.50, should be the same. will update.
Edit: Okay, just booted up SWAG ROM. Unlocked using HTCDEV method. Pushed the kernel via adb fastboot, boot.img from the unzipped ROM folder. Then flashed the zip which was on the root of the SD card, just as described in the EVO 3D development forums, using twrp1.1.1.

Here's what I came up with. Still may do a video. Hope it makes sense, it was very early/late when I wrote this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458491

Slightly off this topic, but along the same lines, so I didn't want to start another thread.
I rooted back in November, prior to the latest OTA update - and had a pretty good understanding of what I was doing - I think.. heh
I NEVER flashed a new ROM, Kernel, Radio, etc. Only backedup, rooted, removed some bloatware, and that's it.
I still have superuser su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip (I think?) in my root folder of my SD Card. Nothing else.
I backed up my Nandroid to my computer, as well as all the TitaniumPro backups of bloatware.
I saw Brad560's two posts - both Barebones and Stock ROM's.
In the Stock post, he listed Deodex'ed, Odexed, and Original UnRooted ROM. This confused me, as I'm still trying to wrap my head around the flashing part. Then I saw a reply about Radios?
I think at this point, I definitely want to remain rooted, but would like the "official" release from HTC/Sprint (in root form, stable, as close to the original as possible, for now).
Which ROM should I grab?
Will I need to flash a new kernel? I don't have any desire to overclock or anything.
And will I need to update the Radios separately?
Thanks, sincerely appreciate any help.

Just read in brads thread and all your answers will be there.

I had to go to htc update 3 x first was a security patch, phone rebooted, then back to htc update little larger file this time, phone rebooted, went back to htc update and finally got the 35mb 2.3.5 update, phone rebooted. I have new hboot now to as well. If my usb port dont work at all is there a way to root just from the sd card and is it even possible?

Thanks for replying.
I have read it. That's the first time I had heard of those things, which is why I asked here.
I think some folks forget what's it like to learn this stuff.. and while many here have been around for awhile and have absorbed over time, there are people like me (a military pilot btw lol) who has a tough time grasping some of the verbiage. I had the rooting thing down. Flashing a ROM seemed easy enough, though hadn't done it. Then someone throws up 3 versions in that post and 2 in the other. I get his barebones stuff - for the most part - he stripped stuff out.
Anyway, I suppose I will take the plunge and pick one of the ROMs, then suppose flash the latest radios.
Thanks!

For the time being, only way to "root"/unlock is via HTCDEV method which requires you be connected to your computer via USB sync cable.

Trying to avoid a brick! Quick help.

I got myself into a interesting situation. A quick answer would be greatly appreciated:
1. I'm rooted.
2. Trying to install the OTA so I can run 2.2 the right way.
3. I started a thread asking for help because I was confused on unrooting my phone. Didn't get much help, a quick flame, and last someone chimed in to install the OTA from Rom Manager. I asked if I could do this with Root and the thread was killed.
4. I did. The boot screen was the new one. But the radio wasn't updated.
5. I then attempted to unroot my phone. Followed the PB31IMG.zip method. Phone booted normally. Root was lost.
6. This is where I am now.
7. My question is, if I install the OTA now renamed update.zip on my SD card, will I run the chance of bricking my phone because I installed it once from Rom Manager while I had root (#3/#4)??????
Please advise so I don't MOD EDIT up my phone.................
And if you're going to flame and insist I should of just followed the 2.2 leak instructions, you're correct. But I took someone's quick answer and tried it assuming they knew a better method.

Well, "the right way" would be to wait for the actual OTA. Verizon would also have your back if you brick. But, anyway...
If you're still on the 1.00.03.04.06 radio, you can probably follow the instructions in that thread now that you've flashed back to the stock ROM. However, there still seem to be a few cases of people bricking their phones or being stuck in a bootloop after flashing leaks.
If you are confused/concerned/afraid of bricks then you just shouldn't flash the leaked OTA. This is not a flame, this is sound advice. Wait for the real one.
I'm fine with flashing. I just keep hearing about this "double install OTA and brick your phone" issue and I'm trying to avoid doing that. If the one guy didn't chime in with the suggestion to use ROM Manager, I wouldn't of had this issue.
My radio is still 1.00.03.04.06. I just want to make sure I don't run a risk of bricking.

I personally have had a .77 HBOOT since I got my phone in April. My mom's phone, on the other hand, had the .79, which she has had since May, and she sure as hell didn't have no 720p camcorder. I don't think that the OP's phone having .79 means with any certainty that the OTA already applied once. I think the radio version listed on the HBOOT screen would be a better indicator.
But absolutely, running the PB13IMG should ensure that he's as far back as he can go, so why not try it just to be safe...

That's what I just did before I posted this thread. I installed the PB13IMG and restored everything back to stock. You asked about the HBOOT version and that's .79. I'm comfortable flashing and doing the update. What should HBOOT say? Has anyone successfully updated the OTA from .79 HBOOT?
Thank you for the help. Sorry for the questions. I completely comfortable with rooting, flashing roms, and kernals. This is going back to unroot stock is just new.
I want to install the OTA and I'm good to go. Just making sure it's safe now....

Agreed, however, I noticed after running the PB13IMG, my HBOOT was also .79, which could have only come from the PB13IMG since I hadn't tried to do the OTA yet. Just trying to add pieces to the puzzle to get a better picture for future reference...I'm sure this guy wont be the last to ask...

I appreciate the help guys. I guess my question would be if I ran PB13IMG, lost my root, back to stock, my HBOOT is .79 and my radio is still 1.00.03.04.06 and not 2.05.00.06.11, I should be at the same point as everyone else for installing the OTA from my SD card. Right or wrong?
When you read these threads and people are installing the OTA twice and bricking, are they installing the OTA again when the radio is already updated to 2.05.00.06.11?
Yep. I think you can flash it again, but be real cautious, as this is your second time flashing it, but if the radio is still the old versoin, you should be safe.

[Q] NewB needs Help installing Rom =(

Ok.. so I'm absolutely new to this rooting and flashing roms and stuff. I want to install the SkyRaider 4.0 ROM. I believe the first step I need to do before I can install this ROM is to root my phone? Do I do this through Unrevoked or through ADB??? Like in this link? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709220 . I checked the WIKI for DInc and it doesn't mention anything about ADB.. So do I need to do that??
So lost. Thanks so much for your help guys
Use the unrevoked program, its so simple, literally one click. Once you have root you'll want to make a backup in recovery before you flash skyraider.

Thanks. So what's up with ADB? Will I need it at all? Do I need to follow the guide as in the link I posted above?
First root using the unrevoked program as mentioned above. Then post back for more help on the ROM flashing.
I wouldn't worry about adb right now. Don't need to use it for rom, kernel, radio flashing.

Honestly, I've never even had to use ADB. Definitely not required. It's nice to have sometimes. But usually something like root explorer will suffice.
*should have refreshed first.

Gotcha. So what's the diff between Unrevoked 3 and unrevoked forever? http://unrevoked.com/#inc
Unrevoked forever gives you permanent root. That is definitely the way to go, and the best way to get your ROM successfully flashed. ( And stay that way ).
Also let's you flash unsigned files in hboot, like radios and splash screens.

Just thought I'd add that you can also go back to stock S-ON later on if needed (warranty replacement, etc).

And in case he doesn't know what S-ON and S-OFF means, it refers to the state of the security "flag" on your device. With S-OFF, your warranty is void, however you can turn the security back on as well if you need to take it into verizon or something.. Using unrevoked forever, it will turn S-ON to S-OFF.
Can SkyRaider work with S-ON? aka without dealing with Unrevoked Forever at the moment?

You should be able to. S-OFF is the way to go through, you can still revert S-ON later.
The whole "security" title it has is meaningless against actually security of your phone, with S-OFF you're more free to tweak your phone.

You may have to install the Android driver manually. I had to when I rooted my Incredible. For some reason when Unrevoked tried to do it, it failed. But it installed fine when I ran the standalone driver installer.

You can root with it but you cannot achieve s-off. To get s-off back you will need to downgrade first to 2.2 gain root and s-off then upgrade to a gb based ROM.

[Q] Will 2.3.4 OTA break S-Off?

After searching the forum and reading many posts, it still is not clear to me if the 2.3.4 OTA (I'm being prompted for 4.06) will break S-Off.
When I rooted my Incredible using Unrevoked3, the custom recovery wasn't out yet or otherwise wasn't included. I believe that I am still running stock recovery (haven't flashed any ROMs).
If I do this update will I lose S-Off or lose root?
I know this topic seems redundant, but I haven't read a clear answer.
Thanks.
I'm wondering the same thing.
I just got the last issue on skyraider 4.3 working again, and I don't really want to start over.

What if your phone is only rooted? If you update will you lose root? I don't actually own a dinc but my friends wife keeps asking me if she should update and if she will lose root if she does. Also if she has to reroot after the update do you know of any issues doing so?

If the OTA actually can be accepted with your custom recovery (debatable), you would lose root IMO. I think what Stang means is that if you're s-off, you can reflash clockwork and superuser, and reaquire root easily. So it doesn't break your ability to root again.

HELP!!! Gained root access on 2.2.1?

I have rooted my Dinc2 before but messed it up, so I just unrooted it to get used to the phone first. Then I kept having memory issues because of all the bloatware. Last night I decided to root again and downgraded to what I thought was 2.3.3 and rooted using revolutionary, after that I found out I had an old radio so I updated that. Finally Root Access!!! But the kick is my software shows 2.2.1 and I tried to flash MikRunny v1.1 deodex and it shows success while flashing, but there is no difference and the software still says 2.2.1 and yes I cleared dalvik, cache, and wiped data. What am I doing wrong? How can I flash roms "completely"?
P.S. I have done tons of searching but can't find anyone with a similar problem.
Oh, and yes I have SU 3.0.7, S-off, CWM Recovery, and actual root access.

I have rooted my Dinc2 before but messed it up, so I just unrooted it to get used to the phone first. Then I kept having memory issues because of all the bloatware. You should RUU the 2.3.3 verison instead of the 2.2.1. You can still use revolutionary to root. See if that fixed your issues.

So I should flash the rooted leak of 2.3.3 Rom and radio? Sorry I haven't researched ruu and from some of the empty info I've been coming along I kind of thought that's what I needed too. I just never had any hard info to where I felt comfortable risking my 2 week old phone.
Sorry I can't post links yet, because I'm a new member. Although I am a long time lurker.
I first updated to the 2.3.3 radio, then flashed 2.3.3 ruu through CWM. I still have CWM, still have superuser, still s-off, but still have the same problem. I am running 2.3.3 now though.
You will flash the ruu or p32img.zip (something like that) from boot manager not recovery.
After that follow the root process and happy flashing.
PS.. the ruu should be places on root of SD card not in any folders.

In that case, don't facepalm too hard. It might come back.
