[Q] Can't Odin: Computer doesn't recognize the device - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What can I do if the computer isn't recognizing the my device?
Rebooted the computer
Redownloaded the drivers (at least I think I did)
Tried with a brand-new cable from Radio Shack
Anything else that could be tried?
Running bamboozle 1.1 on EF02 modem. Does the modem matter? Will it help if I do a nandroid restore from another modem?
Thanks to all!

Try to reinstall the drivers again. Try different USB ports and make sure your phone is in debug mode.

4) Reboot computer.
5) Put phone into download mode then plug it in usb port. Wait for windows to install drivers.
6) Then start-up odin.
I run windows 7 and i have to do this each time i odin the phone.

Drivers for Odin are not installd automatically unless someone put together a complete set. With USB debugging on connect to your computer. Go to Control panel>system>device manager and under USB go to Android Samsung. Hit update drivers through windows update and wait for it to find and install all 5 drivers. Takes over a half an hour.

Because Odin needs the drivers that are loaded with usb debugging on as I mentioned in my post to you. Dude, if you are not going to try what we suggest exactly as we suggest it why do you post asking for help? Not to mention there have been like 30 other threads exactly like this. If you don't have all 5 drivers loaded you will not connect to Odin.

I'm not the one with the odin problem from the op. I just suggested a fix I've been using recently because of a nagging problem I've had. I don't enable usb debugging, yet I get all the drivers to load.

Hmmm...it's possible it loaded the drivers previously and the extra needed drivers for Odin were already on your computer. Unless you loaded it from a driver package that had them all. If so a link to those drivers would be helpful to the OP since I don't think he has all the drivers needed.

Try This.
Sometimes, only 1 port will get the proper recognition...
As I odin'd to EG22 today. I had my old laptop not recognize my phone, after trying all ports, and checking each, uninstalling, reinstalling, scanning for plug and play devices in device manager with little luck. Anyway, I ended up using my dad's awesome Win 7 laptop, no issues, recognized immediately after installing the samsung drivers.
If another laptop/desktop is not an option for you, try different ports, also, have device manager open, go down to usb ports, and uninstall the 'unknown device' and just scan for plug and play.
Device Manager is found by typing it in on Vista or Seven. And on XP by going to Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->System-->Select the Hardware Tab--> Click on the Device Manager Button. Enjoy and I hope I helped.

for some reason I only one USB port that i can use. The other 3 will not work at all. This is on a Dell laptop.
not sure if this helps

any help would be much appreacited thanks in advanced
With USB debugging on, plug your phone in and go to Device Manager and under samsung android choose update driver from Windows Update. Let it find all the drivers. You could also try Odin with the battery out.

Try plugging your phone in after its already In download mode... odin never recognizes my phone unless it was in download mode before I plugged it in....
use a different usb cable
i bet you are booting the phone into download mode while being connected to odin. correct? if i'm right, you can't do that. do what flastnotes says
I've tried connecting while already in download mode still nothing tried different cables still nothing I'm lost

Uninstall and Reinstall the drivers.... this phone can be very finiky... sometimes you gotta just uninstall and reinstall drivers and try different cables... its annoying but eventually it will connect.... idk why everyone has problems with odin... never once had a single problem... every phone and cpu is different though... just keep trying, it'll connect eventually...

If you uninstall the drivers and then just replug your phone in your cpu "should" install them on its own... that's how I did it and it worked for me....
Can you connect to your phone via your computer when your phone is on and you select USB?
If yes, then your phone should not be broken, and it should be a cord/usb port/driver issue
Did you try a different USB port as well?
Also, did you try a different version of Odin?

It is definitely a driver issue. Do what was recommended and remove the drivers. Then turn on usb debugging, plug in the phone and let Windows rescan for drivers. Wait until it gets all of them. There are 5 I think.

PC Doesn't Recognize USB in Recovery

I'm on Task AOKP with the latest TWRP installed. Whenever I boot into recovery my PC doesn't recognize my phone. I get the USB error sound and the device manager shows SAMSUNG_android_SGH-I747 with a yellow exclamation point and it says the driver isn't installed. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers. The phone connects fine and all the drivers are installed properly when the phone is booted.

I used to (on my Captivate) be able to access the internal SD in recovery. I used it to transfer files/completely wipe SD then transfer and install a new ROM.
I've also tried a different USB Cable and tried CWM. The USB is plugged into the back of the computer.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever tried connecting my phone to my pc in recovery so I don't know what to tell you. Mine has only been connected when booted up or in download mode
Out of curiosity i had to try.
Right cable, USB debugging on, correct drivers blah blah... Boot into recovery and nothing.
This isn't the captivate. Unfortunately what does work on one phone doesn't always work on another.

Waiting for device no matter what

I have installed and reinstalled the usb drivers like 4 times with reboots in between. I was about to root, but after root i cant do anything. The main thing i want to do is flash a custom rom. I have the gnex tool kit, it says waiting for device (option 6), and the most recent drivers are from that toolkit. I tried command pront, Fastboot reboot-bootloader, it says waiting for device. I tried adb flash recovery recovery.img it says waiting for device. I tried 2 different cables and all my usb ports on my computer.
Im at a loss. I can still transfer files from my computer to my device. My computer detects it just none of these commands... god i wish i had an sd card slot... lol
Edit:
I also tried putting it inot fastboot mode by pressing the power and wolume up / down keys. It goes to the screen and says start. All commands still say waiting for device.
I feel like this is a driver issue but idk why.... i have tried all drivers...........

Unplug your phone from computer install the drivers from Samsung's website. (Google USB drivers for galaxy nexus i515) reboot computer and try again. Maybe u should install android SDK with adb and do it manually instead of using a toolkit. Those cause problems.

Ohhh the universal naked drivers. I never even thought of that. Actually i did. I have installed them same issue. I have fallowed the instructions in your first link prior to starting this thread. I appreciate the help but your attempt to call me lazy is wrong. Still unable to flash cwm or anything from the computer however i was able to flash cwrm touch today after buying the rom manager premium. Still doesnt explain why i cannot do it from my computer. Mind you i attempted this on my laptop (slackerware) and i did still have issues.
I think it is somthing with the port on my phone ror maybe somthing else. Regardless, im not lazy for i do know where google is and how to abuse all of her abilities. I know where the forum search button is also.
Drivers i have tried.
Naked nexus drivers
Windows native drivers
Slackerware mobile drivers
Samsung drivers
And what ever the gnex tool kit installs. No matter what i get waiting for device...

Are you confusing adb with fastboot, or was "adb flash recovery recovery.img" a typo? Anyway, forget the toolkit. Get adb/fastboot binaries from the 101 & FAQ, and try:
1) booted into Android: adb devices
This should list your device with a number. If the list is empty, adb cannot interface with your gnex.
2) booted into the bootloader: fastboot devices
This should also list your device with a number. If the list is empty, fastboot cannot interface with your gnex.
Note that the adb and the fastboot interface are different. If you installed drivers and got adb running, this does not automatically make fastboot working. Boot into fastboot, connect and use device manager to scout for unknown devices. Update using naked driver if necessary.

you are lazy. you're relying on a toolkit.
please root your phone the manual way, or at least try fastboot alone so we actually know what the problem is.

Again, driver issue. 'fastboot devices' should return your devices serial number. that command is the tell-tell sign that communication between fastboot host (PC/Mac) and client (device) see and recognise each other.
And please try to be flawless on the transcription of the exact commands used, to exclude the possibility of typos.

[Q] Help! Think I softbricked my phone

I had touch recovery installed on phone. I then proceeded to install cwm based recovery because that is what author of the rom said. I just see the Samsung boot logo, then the screen goes black. I am able to boot into recovery mode though. I see there are guides. They mention to hold both the up and down volume button, but nothing happens. Am I missing something here. Any help is appreciated.

I have the same issue where I installed the CWM based recovery and was able to install the ROM successfully without any problems. Couple of days later I decided to go into recovery mode to take a backup before I flash a newer nightly. I was not able to get into the recovery mode at all and it just goes to the Samsung logo and stays there. Can't boot the phone either!! It's just weird that the Vol up + Down combos or the Vol Up + Power combos do not work either.
What are the other options that I should try?

I have the same problem, but despite reinstalling the drivers and using kies and more than one version of odin, I can't get odin to recognize my device in download mode, the com port never turns yellow and windows won't assign a com port. Anyone know a solution to that?

Try different com ports on PC and make sure ur using the factory usn wire, Odin is funny like that, oh and if u have lies installed on the PC Odin will not recognize the phone, Odin and lies don't play well together, remove any and all traces of it or use a PC that doesn't have it install because as long as its there u won't get a connection

It's not a matter of trying different com ports, I can't get the PC or Odin to recognize the phone in download mode despite uninstalling kies, installing the latest drivers twice, 3 different OEM cables, multiple usb ports, nothing. when I plug it in, Windows doesn't make any sound like with other usb devices, nor does it try and search for drivers. Are there any other options short of JTAG repair?

Try a diff PC then because if u can get it into download mode it doesn't need JTAG, idk why ur PC isn't setting it but if u can get into download mode u should be able use odin, I'd DL mode works it's only a soft brick, JTAG would be a waste

I think infamous superwipe fouled it up to where it's not recognized as a usb device, my ps3 no longer read it as a device either. Know of a way to reverse that ?

That's strange because as long as u can get into DL mode Odin should work, all JTAG does is force the phone into DL mode so u can flash the firmware, but since u can access DL mode JTAG won't help u, and if it was hardbricked it would show up in window as qcom-dsload or something like that, the ps3 maybe won't recognize it because there is no recovery installed but I would try a new computer, search drivers for t989 and install that driver and use Odin 1.85, if none of that works then idk man but it should work...

Trying to root SGH-T999L, Odin won't recognize phone while in DL mode

Exactly like my subject says, Odin won't recognize my phone while it is in download mode, and every attempt to flash sonething has, according to Odin, neither failed nor succeded. (success 0/fail 0) Could it be something so simple as drivers? I would think not, as Odin will actually recognize my device as connected while the phone is on.
