[Q] Help! Think I softbricked my phone - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I had touch recovery installed on phone. I then proceeded to install cwm based recovery because that is what author of the rom said. After I was done installing CWM on phone, I then started installing the custom rom along with the gapps that came with it. Now my phone doesn't boot into the custom rom at all. I just see the Samsung boot logo, then the screen goes black. I am able to boot into recovery mode though. I see there are guides. They mention to hold both the up and down volume button, but nothing happens. Am I missing something here. Any help is appreciated.

How did u flash your rom? I'm guessing it was a 4.3? Did u remember to wipe? Also remember to flash the rom and gapps from your ext SD card not your internal cwm is a lil touchy

I have the same issue where I installed the CWM based recovery and was able to install the ROM successfully without any problems. Couple of days later I decided to go into recovery mode to take a backup before I flash a newer nightly. I was not able to get into the recovery mode at all and it just goes to the Samsung logo and stays there. Can't boot the phone either!! It's just weird that the Vol up + Down combos or the Vol Up + Power combos do not work either.
What are the other options that I should try?

Try putting the phone in DL mode, get ur USB wore and connect it to PC, now with ur phone off hold vol+vols while plugging in the USB wire, u should get a screen with a warning of some kind, follow directions and press continue, now ur in DL mode, use Odin to flash twrp 2.6.0.4 from techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules now u should have a fully functional recovery capable of flashing 4.3 roms without any hassle, soft bricks are an easy fix with this phone ..

Thanks a ton... I used your exact method to get back TWRP recovery back onto the phone. Also followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195283 to get the ODIN, Drivers, steps, etc in order to get the phone to boot back into my ROM.
Hope it helps the OP or someone else with similar issues.

I have the same problem, but despite reinstalling the drivers and using kies and more than one version of odin, I can't get odin to recognize my device in download mode, the com port never turns yellow and windows won't assign a com port. Anyone know a solution to that?

Try different com ports on PC and make sure ur using the factory usn wire, Odin is funny like that, oh and if u have lies installed on the PC Odin will not recognize the phone, Odin and lies don't play well together, remove any and all traces of it or use a PC that doesn't have it install because as long as its there u won't get a connection

It's not a matter of trying different com ports, I can't get the PC or Odin to recognize the phone in download mode despite uninstalling kies, installing the latest drivers twice, 3 different OEM cables, multiple usb ports, nothing. when I plug it in, Windows doesn't make any sound like with other usb devices, nor does it try and search for drivers. Are there any other options short of JTAG repair?

Try a diff PC then because if u can get it into download mode it doesn't need JTAG, idk why ur PC isn't setting it but if u can get into download mode u should be able use odin, I'd DL mode works it's only a soft brick, JTAG would be a waste

That's strange because as long as u can get into DL mode Odin should work, all JTAG does is force the phone into DL mode so u can flash the firmware, but since u can access DL mode JTAG won't help u, and if it was hardbricked it would show up in window as qcom-dsload or something like that, the ps3 maybe won't recognize it because there is no recovery installed but I would try a new computer, search drivers for t989 and install that driver and use Odin 1.85, if none of that works then idk man but it should work...

I did a factory reset on my galaxy nexus. I also by mistake erased my internal SD card. So now my phone only boots as far as the google screen because there is not ROM to boot into and when you connect to a computer it doesn't recognize the phone. How do I get a rom on my phone so it works again.
Thanks

Can you boot into fastboot? (Hold the power button and both volume buttons). I would boot into fastboot and reflash the Stock images. Also want to specify which variant you have.. GSM or CDMA if CDMA, verizon or Sprint?
Factory reset from stock or a custom recovery will not wipe the system partition. If you formatted the system partition from a custom recovery you can boot back into the custom recovery and adb push a ROM to your sdcard
Install the drivers on the computer. Then put the phone in fastboot mode like uber mentioned. Then push the rom to the phone and flash it in recovery. If you didnt install a recovery either, youll need one of those too.
Yeah hard to tell by her post if her bootloader is unlocked or not. I didnt think it was possible to wipe system without unlocking the boot loader and flashing a new recovery. Which means she needs knowledge of fastboot to even set that up.
The more i read the OP the more it sounds like unless she bought a used rooted phone off ebay. This thing is stock and just needs to boot to stock recovery and perform a factory reset from there. And that her system is fine.
With then phone off, hold down both volume buttons. Then hold down the power button, once it boots , use the volume keys to cycle and the power button to select. Navigate to recovery and perform a factory reset.

Doesn't matter if its GSM or rooted. Fastboot is independent.
I can boot into fastboot and clockworkmod recovery, but the SD storage is blank. The computer won't recognize the phone. I can't seem to fix it and it's driving me crazy not having a phone. Please help!!

Plug in your phone via USB, in Fastboot mode.
Does it show in the device manager? It might not be called 'Galaxy Nexus', might be called something Fastboot related. It might be in the USB section.
XP:To open Device Manager, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
7: Hit windows key, type in "Device Manager"
If there's a yellow triangle next to the device, the drivers on your PC may be not working correctly.
If it is working correctly, the easiest option is to load the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit, and flash stock ROM.
You installed the drivers as mentioned I take it?

[HOW-TO] [GSM & CDMA] Convert to latest yakju/takju/mysid (incl JB) / Return to stock
Take a look at step A. Install the drivers. Note you should also be able to set up the adb drivers while your phone is booted into a custom recovery.
follow the instructions here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Install the drivers, then flash the stock image in fastboot, nothing to it.

THIS. IS. NEXUS.
Ash just install the drivers for the galaxy nexus, download a rom like aokp (the "maguro" version is the gsm version. Dont flash "toro" versions those are for cdma ) and then push it to the sd card using fastboot. All those steps are listed in a lot of posts in great detail by the author mskip and are stickied in the dev section here. Just read his posts for questions or drivers . Its all pretty straight forward once you read the right posts. Id avoid using any toolkits though, its all fairly simple stuff. And dont worry about the geeks here being surprised about seeing females. Some of them have never left the basement before. ( no offence guys , i got no problem with the homosexuals )

Can you pull the battery and restart in download mode? Hold power, the home button and volume up to try and get into download mode. You should then be able to flash with Odin.

[Q] Bricked GNex?

I was doing a lot websurfing and the phone got hot but didn't think much of it. Then my screen imagine became distorted and a loud noise came out of the speaker. I had never seen it before. I figured the phone crashed. The power button didn't work, so I removed the battery and put it back in. Now the phone can't get past the "Google" screen (which blurs after a few moments). My phone is unlocked and rooted. It's been so long since I've flashed my phone that I don't know if the usb debugging is turned on and here's where my problem lays. I can't get the phone to be recognized by any of my computers. I've tried a bunch of tools, installing different drivers, and Odin. All of them can't see my phone. I can boot into Fastboot and Odin. I can sometimes boot into CWM, and if I do, all I see is "ClockworkMod recovery v5.8.0.2" and no other options. After 15 seconds, the phone will exit CWM and reboot.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
Can you boot into recovery and maybe full wipe and re flash? Have you tried a backup? Have you tried mounting in recovery? Should be SD or USB mount try that maybe. I'm not a Dev. But I would try all those first. Post back if possible.

Download the galaxy Nexus toolkit and that will apply the stock image vai google. You can restore your phone from scratch back to stock.

Okay, I figured out why my computer couldn't see the phone. The USB cable was bad. It charged the phone, so I assumed it worked. Tried another cable and now the computer sees the device. Stupid cable!
So, I got going using fastboot but now I have another problem. I can connect to the phone and my computer sees it, but when I try a flash command like "fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img", I get "Failed (status read failed (Too many links))". I've been doing some reading and see this is not a good thing.
I haven't tried Odin, because I read in another post by efrant, not to use Odin if I'm getting the "Failed (status..."
I probably have a hardware issue, right? Any suggestions?
Thanks to everyone for their input!!!
I tried using fastboot to boot into the latest recovery .img file. Again, all I got was the title "ClockworkMod Recovery Mod 6.0.1.9"

Try using fastboot to flash TWRP recovery image not CWM.
Download it from here if you have GSM GNex (Maguro), otherwise, just choose your device from the same website
And what about returning to stock using fastboot? You changed the USB cable so seems this should work with you now.

Well, I searched for that error and found this thread. I checked it quickly and there are many suggestions up there to solve the issue like changing the cable, ports, and so on. So please take some time to read through it and try the various solutions so hopefully this error will be solved
I too have had issues with cables. Never that same error but I've had read and write errors. I've resorted to using a 3yr old Motorola Droid power cable because it seems to be built the best. I've also had success using different ports and computers.
Also instead of updating the drivers to the newest try deleting the device out if device manager and rebooting and then installing the device new. That has fixed a "hardware component ID" error I had

Well you can only get into download mode. So you need to install a custom recovery using odine. CWM is short for clockwork mod recovery. Find a how to and install cwm using odine.
Another custom recovery is TWRP. I like using TWRP. Has a nice touch interface.

If you have a computer download a Rom of your liking then install meaning find the file on your sd card then flash it? I recommend something close to the stock Rom then try new ones btw make a back up of your stock rom!!!!!! P.s. Look at YouTube for tutorials on how to?

To be more clear.
You said you can't boot into recovery. You can only boot into download mode. What download mode means is that you have to install cwm from a computer using odine. You connect your phone to a computer using a USB cable. Boot your phone into download mode. Open odine on your PC select the cwm odine file and push it to your phone. Disconnect your phone from your pc. Then you can put a ROM on your exSDcard and boot into recover and install the ROM.
Do a search on xda on how to install cwm using odine. I'm not going to write how to do it here cause you can search and do it your self. Good luck

[Q] PLS help! Bricked my phone very weird.

Hello everybody im not to sure what happened. Ill say everything from the beginning. I have a gt n7100 and i was rooted. I had twrp 2.5. I was on 4.1.2 and flashed via recovery DN3 rom. I was happy that it worked but there was a problem with wifi. So i tried to flash the wifi fix via odin. And heres what i did. The phone was normally turned on and plugged in the computer (odin 3.09) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2531965&highlight=wifi+fix . i DOWNLOADED THIS FIX EXTRACTED IT AND VIA pda i tried to flash patch.tar.md5 .
nothing happened i think it didnt even find the phone. It said succed/failed 0. So i downloaded odin 3.04. Put phone in download mode and tried to do the same thing. It said leave cs. So what i did is i unplugged the phone from the computer, holded volume up and power up tryin to get out of download mode. I did a battery was shown and it tried to boot after that but it was stuck on thhe samsung galaxy note II display. Now what happens is the recovery cant turn on. The phone cant turn on but i can get in download mode. What should i do to save my phone. Pls help
Oh i forgot to say that I have backups form the phone. On my PC

If u are not able to go in recovery then try to reflash it via odin. It should work.. try this way or wait for an expert. .

I am so sorry if i sounded rude. Never meant to my english isnt too good. I am ver happy that someone is trying to help me. Sorry if you understanded me the wrong way.
We are not specific and are not spoon feeding you because this not done that way. You HAVE to spend time and learn what is what. The answers you need and the help you need are already here. If you're expecting download links and screenshots you shouldn't be modifying your phone. The whole point of this community is to learn and share the knowledge - not spoon feed.
Go to the TWRP thread, read up and download the tar that you need to flash through odin. Look for the MJ5 bootloader (hint: look up Wanam's ROM thread, that's one of the many places). After you got these two, boot to TWRP and flash the ROM.
Finally, as long as your phone gets into download mode, it's not bricked. And you got to do something incredibly foolish to make it not boot into bootloader. That said, it would be prudent to learn and act rather than blindly execute what you read - I said the same thing in not so many words in my reply to you in the DN3 ROM thread.

If you have used ODIN before to flash anything using this computer you are trying with now, you don't need to reinstall the drivers.
