If I import a T-Mobile G2 from the US that is SIM unlocked, does it have the correct radio bands to work with 3G on UK networks, specifically T-Mobile UK? Providing I enter the correct APN settings, of course.
In case anyone else was wondering about this, I just sent an email to a friend who works at HTC asking him about this, and he confirmed that even though the radio bands differ slightly between the G2 and the Desire Z, an American SIM-unlocked G2 would indeed work on UK 3G networks with the right APN settings.
Mods, you can go ahead and close this thread if you need to since I have my answer.

Hey,
I've spent forever trying to figure out which Desire model (A8181/82/83) will work best for 3g on Fido, but the info I get is confusing.
Can someone comment who actually uses the Desire on Fido in Toronto or knows for sure what frequencies Fido uses here?
I've seen people say in this forum that the A8183 (Australia) works for them. The A8183 works on 850/2100. That seems to work since Fido is listed as using 850/2100 (not allowed to post links yet: gsmworld . com / roaming / gsminfo / cou_ca.shtml).
BUT, I keep reading that Fido uses Rogers' network, which apparently uses 850/1900 (that would be the European(?) A8182.)
I'm looking into buying from Telus, they list HSPA as 850/1900.
So,
1. What frequencies does Fido use, and does it differ between locations/cities?
2. Can Fido users use the Rogers network?
3. Is the Telus phone ok for Fido? (Let's forget for a moment that they're out of stock and that BB has dropped the $449/no contract offer for it from their website )
4. Is it enough to have one of the supported frequencies? I read that networks may use one for upload and the other one for download only.
Thanks much!

I am using an unlocked Telus Desire on Fido and it works great. Telus uses the same 3G bands as Rogers/Fido (850/1900) so 3G will work. I got mine without contract from Futureshop last week. Best buy refused to sell it without contract. I rooted it and installed LeeDroid 1.9 and so far I'm loving it. My only problem is I cannot get mms to work for some reason.
Have you tried maually inputting APN settings on your Desire. I have and MMS works great on Rogers. Desire8183 from Aus.
Thanks guys. Still confused why different models should all work But hey, as long as it does... Gonna take the plunge asap.
I got mine, unbrand A8181, from UK. It works well with Fido but won't work for Rogers.

Hi there, I have a Telus HTC Desire and unlocked it so it works with my Fido SIM card (e.g. can make phone calls). But, I haven't been able to get GPRS/Edge and 3G working for me. Would you mind sharing your APN settings?
Also, do you have your "Network mode" in "GSM only" or in "GSM / WCDMA auto"? Do you need "Data roaming" on for GPRS/Edge/3G to work?
I have an iPhone 3Gs and have GPRS/Edge/3G working perfectly there. I am using the same Fido SIM card now on the HTC Desire.
Thank you in advance, any assistance would greatly be appreciated!

I turned on "Data Roaming". Didn't work. =( I also tried switching "Network Mode" to "WCDMA only". No luck still.

I finally found the culprit -- my Fido SIM card. It's very unusual. I got the SIM card just March this year from Fido, and it works well with GPRS/Edge/3G when placed back in my iPhone 3Gs....but is totally crippled on my HTC Desire, except for voice.
I went to a cellphone store for help. The tech guy used his Fido SIM card on my HTC Desire and GPRS/Edge/3G worked fine. So, I just bought a new Fido SIM card from the store, and they helped me activate it. In 15 minutes, I finally got my HTC Desire working with GPRS/Edge/3G.
The APN settings I used were:
Name: fido internet
APN: internet.fido.ca
Username: fido
Password: fido
APN type: default
First of all, the desire you want is the 8183 if you want full functionality. The TELUS units will potentially work if unlocked but data will be crippled as they are built for different network types (cdma vs 3g). I am using a Telstra unit from Australia on Fido as it is the only one produced that matches all specs for use on Rogers/Fido or AT&T. To my knowledge, HTC has not released and unbranded/unlocked unit.
On another note, not sure why that guy said that something would work on Fido but not on Rogers as they are the same network.

You are wrong TELUS is gsm only now so 3g bands are the same as Rogers, just have to change settings ..

Hi all,
I have been searching these forums and the net for the past two days and I can only find rumor of what I am looking for.
I am trying to find out how I can go about getting the G2 to work on Rogers 3G. The phone supports the frequencies but merely doesn't know what to do with them.
It looks like the phone can access bands I, II, III, IV, V, and VIII.
It uses Bands II and IV for phone and edge.
It should be able to use Band I for 3G
HTC and Rogers tells me that Band I should work for me but I cant even get Edge right now. My APN settings should be correct.
In the *#*#4636#*#* menu you can change the radio bands it uses. Would this imply that the software determines the bands used to connect to the network?
I read rumors that people have successfully flashed the DZ radio to the G2 but I can't find any details on the matter. Has anyone seen this done? would that change the bands the phone uses for 3G?
The bands are set in hardware, you can't change them. If you flash a DZ radio to the G2 (I've no idea if that is safe or not), then it won't change the bands.
The G2 supports Bands I and IV.
The DZ has Bands I and VIII
The NAM DZ (Bell) has Bands II and V.
Sorry, but there's no way a G2 is going to work on 3G on Rogers (Bands II and V). It'll do EDGE at best. You need to sell the G2 and buy a NAM DZ if you want to get that working.
Hello fellas. I've been with my G2 for about a month now, awesome phone, but the thing is I only can use EDGE network and not 3G.
Since my carrier here in Venezuela is Movistar, which operates in these bands: 850, 1900 Mhz.
Is there anyway to make my T-Mobile G2 work with my local carrier? Thanks in advance for the help.
Yes --- check out the HUGE APN thread here.

you just need to find the right apn for your area...
No, the T-Mobile G2 is not compatible with those UMTS bands (it only uses 1700/2100). If you wanted 3G to work, you would need to get the Desire Z NAM instead (i.e., the Bell Canada version). Probably too late since you already have the phone, but maybe you can sell your G2 and pick up one of those instead?

Yes, I made some research and the only way I can enjoy 3G is if I get the DZ Us Version...
I mostly blame the carriers in this POS country, they're so behind in technology.
I got this really cheap T-Mobile G2 in the US which worked perfectly alright and brought it to to my own network overseas. I know the handset uses 3G on a totally different band but I believe edge connection should work, right?
Anyway, I unlocked it using the downgrade method. Then I installed CM7. I put my own sim card and it does pick up signal and I am able to make and receive phone calls but there is no EDGE. I already set the APN options correctly.
Any thoughts?
You sure the APN info is correct for your carrier? Ability to make calls, but no data are pretty good indications of wrong APN.
Yes, as long as the phone has the same GSM bands used by your local carrier, and you are unlocked, you should be able to get data via EDGE.
Isn't there a reason the us has G2 and the rest of the world has desire z? Aren't the bands different between the 2?

Just different bands for 3G. Your G2 has the proper GSM (voice and EDGE) to work in most parts of the world.
And the G2 name is just T-Mobile's branding and to signify the vanilla (no Sense) ROM. The Canada, Europe, Asia versions of the Desire Z all have different bands from each other.

Completely sure. Used the same sim I use in my main phone which is also android based. Could it be a radio issue? I was tempted to flash a new one but since Im not that familiar with this particular phone I don't feel like messing up, especially when all I want is the phone to work so I can sell it.
BTW, anyone interested PM me - although I believe I shouldn't post this here.
I have rooted and installed CM7 on my Defy. I bought an unlocked Defy from ebay after a google search revealed that it would work with ATT.
So far, I am only able to connect to the EDGE network and only make calls. I can't get text messages to work, but I can get about 40kbps when I run the speedtest app. Anyone have any insight? Thanks.
The Defy from T-Mobile is not compatiple with AT&T 3g bands. Also your texting problem is connected to your APN settings not being correct.
You are correct, sorry I meant to say that the 850 band is the only one reported working
Several other forums report that the 850 band works on ATT 3G.
a tmobile defy definitely works on att. I am on one right now.
did you check the band changer? since you're on edge you should be on the correct bands. maybe the person sold you a non tmobile defy?
also i've seen a 3g fix floating around but i'm not sure what it's for.
with my tmo defy that was unlocked i just popped in my sim and it worked. when i changed to cm7 i had to change the bands and then it worked.
It is a non t-mob defy.
Or at least I suspect this based on the European style plug.
Which baseband are you using?
i am using the americas us t-mo 3.4.2-107-4
