[Q] 4g Roaming? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am wondering if there is a way to get the evo to roam on other 4G networks, being that I just read that Sprints long term plans include some LTE and WiMax 4g deployments, and T Moble has LTE and considering adding Wimax I am assuming the signals must work on the same antenna.
Now when I don't have Spirnt signal my phone connects to Verizion, What I would like to see happen, (although I don't think it will yet) is if sprint 4g isn't available for my phone to roam on Verizion 4g. Anyone know a way to accomplish that, Basically I just need to add a few Verizion 4g towers to the tower list (easier said then done is my guess)
IMO it would make sense for all carriers to work together to deploy one 4g and allow roaming (trading Bandwidth) while they build up the technology much like they do now.

Solved!!!
I just finished having My evo use Verizion 4g.
1. Have the Newest Flash 10.2 installed and make sure u have the hulu hexedited so file installed (the one for hulu)
2. Turn your WiFi On
3. Tell your co-worker* that Hulu looks much better now with flash 10.2
4. Your coworker will want to see since hulu dosen't work on his thunderbolt, convience him to turn on his hotspot and use ur wifi to connect
Ch131 plays awesome, so does hulu. Looks like wifi tether is capped at 5 meg that is the best the speed test could do, Sprint needs to get their act together and get 4g rolled out, Now that I got a taste I want more 4g
*Coworker must have Thundebolt and 4g service

That's not roaming.

I use roam control to force roaming and I'm fairly certain that even tho its says 3g it isn't so i doubt it'd work for 4g

It was more of a joke, since our phones can't connect to lte, but sprint can upgrade their equipment to lte with software, I think the best we can do is tether off some one else's phone, until wimax comes

Wimax vs. wifi hotspot?

Does Wimax relate to only 4G? And what about wifi hotspot? 3G or 4G?
Wimax is the technical term for 4G (well, one of them)
LTE is also a popular 4G technology.
The hotspot option works in 3G and 4G areas as long as your paying Sprint the $29.99 fee or if you are rooted and have wireless tether
Hmm. Ok so no 4G here, but with wireless tether app I can't connect my PC but with wifi hotspot I can connect my PC.

The Wireless Tether app will only work if you've rooted your phone. Have you done that?
Correction:
WiMax is 802.16e. WiMax and LTE (Verizon, AT&T's, and possibly T-Mobile's "4G") are not actually 4G, as they do not have the speed or latency requirements to be called such. Calling these technologies "4G" would be like calling GSM EDGE "3G" just because it's one-step better than regular GSM.
Real 4G has a >100mbps connection and fully backwards-compatible (see this page for detailed information). Current LTE and WiMax technologies do not fit either of these requirements (nor the other requirements for 4G, such as a fully IPv6 and VoIP network). However, their successors do fit these requirements: LTE-Advanced, and 802.16m (also called WiMax, but a noticably different version. To give an example, 802.11b and 802.11n are both called WiFi, but calling them the same thing would be far from appropriate).
So why do these companies call their "new" networks "4G"? It's a marketting term. That's all. Just like the stuff the GSM-based carriers (AT&T, mostly) pulled back when EDGE came out: Calling it more than it is, to try and look better than everyone else.
Just clarifying for everyone.

i mean thats all fine and dandy, but the average person doesnt really think about that stuff, 3g in theory is specs alot faster than it actually does in practice
Still, if you're going to call LTE and 802.16e "4G", let's just extend that and call EDGE "3G" and 56kbps dial-up can be "broadband." It's sorta like the whole "I run CM6 because I believe in OSS" deal.

Sprint hotspot...no 4G?

So I did Calk's tweak to get Sprint hot spot working. Tried it today but it seems to kill 4G? Does it not work with 4G?
Via EVO on XDA app...
Greetings,
I'm not sure it's related. But I just installed the XDA app, and found every time
I attempted to login, the 4G link would drop, and XDA threw the error;
service unavailable.
I simply blamed it on being a bad night for 4G in my area. But thought I'd respond
here just in case. I'll know better by tomorrow.

OK I just tried again and as you can see, XDA app works on my sprint 4G.
sent from my rooted EVO
Not quite the same...I have no problems with 4G. It's just when I use the SPRINT WiFi router...the one in the market works fine on 4G. I also talked to a co-worker who said her (paid) sprint router works just fine with 4G, so its clearly an issue with my phone or ROM.
Via EVO on XDA app...
I noticed this too, when trying to use Sprint's Hotspot w/Calkulin's fix, the 4g icon drops and I only have 3g.
Can someone confirm that if they are paying for the Hotspot that it connects with 4g?
Same thing here, can't use native tethering with 4g. So I just switched to Easy Tether and Wireless Tether, they work fine with 4g.
I'm sure the native tethering would work over 4g if you were paying for it, I mean, they advertise it in the commercials, so I'd sure hope it works.
Hey... this thing makes phone calls too!
I tried the Sprint Hotspot app through Myns RLS2 to tether last night on 4g and it dropped down to 3g every time. Turned it off and right back to 4g. Maybe sometime soon that might work.

Don't count on it...I found in another thread that it registers the WiMax MAC when it connects and supposedly there's no way around this.
I just ended up buying an Overdrive...WiFi tether for Root users is toooooo slow as well.

[Q] Epic4g to MetroPCS. Metro claims they dont have 3G???

I just went through all the necessary steps to get my shiny new Epic 4G to work on MetroPCS. I realize that LTE 4G wont work because of differing technologies but was willing to settle for 3G.
I got to the metro store to have them add my ESN to their database and they told me they do not have any 3G network whatsoever. Is this true? What is a good course of action here? seems like my only two options are get an LTE phone or try Boost Mobile instead.
My more important question is are these guys yanking my chain to avoid work or sell me something?
Thoughts?
3G is only in a few cities and when I say a few I do mean a few that can be counted on one hand I believe. Dallas and Miami I think were of the few that were supposed to recently have reactivated the 3g temporally to relieve some traffic in other areas.
Flash to boost or cricket I was Able to get my Epic on cricket with there 45 dollar plan with working 3g cane it to a lil under 50 a month with taxes
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
thanks guys, I'll look into what's available in my area!
Also are those Metro guys just lazy as hell or can they really not add an ESN to the Metro inventory without flashing it themselves? They claimed that their flashing program did the adding and they had no other way to do it. Sounds like a hard sell or a lazy excuse to me
I would lean more towards they are not as experienced in that area. I think any opportunity to provide a service for a customer within your ability that would lead to the customer returning to receive more services from your store should be an automatic move to make. No brainer. I'm sure if they knew other methods they would.
Well the manager was who I was talking to about it at the time. I figure if anyone in the store knows he would :\
They do have 3g, I just manually updated my prl and its blazing fast. Not capped right now either. Although I havent left the house so not sure how the differnt towers are going to work. I just downloaded 2000kb in 2.83 secs, prl 3022 evdo rev a moto droid 1. Daytona

[Q] Questions

Yes I recently did an early upgrade with Sprint I got the Evo 3D but my question is i still have my HTC EVO 4G phone, i did not want them to have it because it's Rooted would Sprint know if I use Mobile Hotspot as wifi to connect to my Wifi only Tablet its a Toshiba Thrive Tablet and to remind I have no service on my Evo 4G no more so any suggestions and no im not going to root the Evo 3d phone if you guys are wondering.
First off, punctuation is your friend.
Second, if you aren't paying for service on your evo, you wont get 3g/4g, therefore you cannot use it as a hotspot.
Okay thanks but I just connected my Tablet and it work from the Evo 4G that's the phone that is rooted but no service on that phone but service on my EVO 3D
Again, if you aren't paying for service on that phone, you won't get 3g. If you ARE getting 3g, then it's likely the Evo is your active phone, and the 3d isn't active anymore on the account.
umm My 3d phone is active that is the phone that is new and My EVO4G is not Active but some how I can still use wifi portion of the service. For the HTC EVO 4G you are correct their is no 3G or 4G but wifi Yes.
Ok I don't think you understand how tethering works. Tethering takes your phone's 3g service, and sends it out via wifi for other devices to use. Yes, you can still use wifi on your old Evo 4G, nothing is stopping you from doing that. And yes, you can still turn on the hotspot. However, since the phone does not have 3g service, you wont actually get any data off the wifi.

Wait. what?
Your tablet connected to your Evo 4gs signal via mobile hotspot, but your Evo 4g doesn't HAVE a signal?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
That is correct see i am using wifi only Sprint hotspot I kept the EVO4G rooted so my Toshiba Thirve Tablet can connect to it when i am out and about and my EVO 3d phone is not rooted and no i am not paying for the service for Hotspot. Long Story Short or do i need to upload a video lol on youtube EVO4G no service or no 3G or 4G but only Wifi and my EVO3D phone has the service thats the phone I upgrade it too.
Again, if your 4g has NO service, you can still use the hotspot, and your tablet will connect to the phone, but you will NOT get any internet, as the phone has no internet source (3g).
And again, please use punctuation. It really helps us read and understand your questions.
Agreed. Punctuation is sssooooo important. Trying to read with no punctuation honestly makes my head hurt,....makes me feel like my head is just spinning and I'm going crazy. :banghead:

Porting the Epic to Republic Wireless?

Hey, all. I recently got a notification that I'd receive an invite to Republic Wireless next week. For anyone who doesn't know what this is, it's the best thing that has happened to me:
http://republicwireless.com/
The only issue is, the only phone they have for it right now is some crappy LG Android phone. Startup Fee is also $200, as you need to buy their phone. I was wondering...I will obviously need to port the 3g/MMS settings over to my Epic, along with other things...but what else would I need to do? I assume they have their own software to use Wifi for calls, but I really haven't heard about anyone looking into this. I mean...$20 a month for unlimited everything when within WiFi, and outside of wifi you have a soft limit using Sprint's towers (depends on how much you use within wifi). Verizon and Sprint charge rape, so I'd like to get away from them as soon as possible.
Edit: Just thought about it. Will have to get the PRL from the phone. It's the LG Optimus. It probably wont be a big deal to get it. Since it's an Android phone...do you guys think I could get the package that allows wifi calling somehow from the phone? All speculation until I actually get it, of course.

The LG Optimus probably has something similar to the Sprint's Connections Optimizer pre-installed to prefer Wi-Fi over 3G, so I imagine you could root the Optimus and copy from /system/app/ and try to install it on your Epic. Would Wi-Fi calling be integrated into the dialer somehow? You'd have to do some poking around to see how they integrated VoIP into the phone.
To make your Epic work properly, you would need to do what many Boost/Virgin users have already done to flash their phones to a different carrier. Copy MEID and the usual NAM programming including MMS gateway, data usernames and passwords, HDR auth keys, etc.
[edit]
Another XDA user made a dump of the Republic's Optimus, so you can have a look.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460996
It's interesting to see Republic using a modified version of CyanogenMod 7.
By the time you sign up for the service this summer there will be a second phone option. It is expected to be a much better option than the Optimus. I'll probably be jumping on the new phone unless it is ridiculous $$$ (currently have RW).
Look how much time has past and the best phone is a Dumb Motorola Defy with only one band and the next phone is a Defy Dual band. I think they have an amazing idea but the must make a way to port a sprint phone and download and app tha flashes the phone to there service. But i heard you can tether so it the cheapest wireless hotspot with true unlimited internet. Not sure if its 4G or 3G ?

Uh, you can't tether. Your "limits" are based on how much you actually use the phone. If you just eat up your data and don't use wifi, they'll drop you. I got the Motorola Defy, found out it was SIGNIFICANTLY worse than even my Samsung Epic (e.g. I could not text because I had no cell signal and texts are not done through wifi), and dropped them like a bad habit. I love the idea. The follow-through is terrible.
Anyone have any progress on this? I have an Epic Touch 4G and would like to use it with Republic. I'm sure I could get one of their phones as a donor and put the meid in the ET4G (already did this successfuly with Virgin and another Sprint MNVO I can't remember atm) and then have it working on their network. The difference here is we would need the part of the software that handles the automatic switch from wifi to phone calling. Is it some modified voip software? I have wifi calling on my ET4G with Grooveip or Talkatone but they both have lag. Unusable.
This is not the Epic Touch forum. You might want to ask there.
XDA Moderator
Well I'm still curious if anyone has done this with an epic 4G then. Whatever progress is made with that phone, I could apply to mine.
