Porting the Epic to Republic Wireless? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, all. I recently got a notification that I'd receive an invite to Republic Wireless next week. For anyone who doesn't know what this is, it's the best thing that has happened to me:
http://republicwireless.com/
The only issue is, the only phone they have for it right now is some crappy LG Android phone. Startup Fee is also $200, as you need to buy their phone. I was wondering...I will obviously need to port the 3g/MMS settings over to my Epic, along with other things...but what else would I need to do? I assume they have their own software to use Wifi for calls, but I really haven't heard about anyone looking into this. I mean...$20 a month for unlimited everything when within WiFi, and outside of wifi you have a soft limit using Sprint's towers (depends on how much you use within wifi). Verizon and Sprint charge rape, so I'd like to get away from them as soon as possible.
Edit: Just thought about it. Will have to get the PRL from the phone. It's the LG Optimus. It probably wont be a big deal to get it. Since it's an Android phone...do you guys think I could get the package that allows wifi calling somehow from the phone? All speculation until I actually get it, of course.

The LG Optimus probably has something similar to the Sprint's Connections Optimizer pre-installed to prefer Wi-Fi over 3G, so I imagine you could root the Optimus and copy from /system/app/ and try to install it on your Epic. Would Wi-Fi calling be integrated into the dialer somehow? You'd have to do some poking around to see how they integrated VoIP into the phone.
To make your Epic work properly, you would need to do what many Boost/Virgin users have already done to flash their phones to a different carrier. Copy MEID and the usual NAM programming including MMS gateway, data usernames and passwords, HDR auth keys, etc.
[edit]
Another XDA user made a dump of the Republic's Optimus, so you can have a look.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460996
It's interesting to see Republic using a modified version of CyanogenMod 7.

By the time you sign up for the service this summer there will be a second phone option. It is expected to be a much better option than the Optimus. I'll probably be jumping on the new phone unless it is ridiculous $$$ (currently have RW).

Look how much time has past and the best phone is a Dumb Motorola Defy with only one band and the next phone is a Defy Dual band. I think they have an amazing idea but the must make a way to port a sprint phone and download and app tha flashes the phone to there service. But i heard you can tether so it the cheapest wireless hotspot with true unlimited internet. Not sure if its 4G or 3G ?

Uh, you can't tether. Your "limits" are based on how much you actually use the phone. If you just eat up your data and don't use wifi, they'll drop you. I got the Motorola Defy, found out it was SIGNIFICANTLY worse than even my Samsung Epic (e.g. I could not text because I had no cell signal and texts are not done through wifi), and dropped them like a bad habit. I love the idea. The follow-through is terrible.

Anyone have any progress on this? I have an Epic Touch 4G and would like to use it with Republic. I'm sure I could get one of their phones as a donor and put the meid in the ET4G (already did this successfuly with Virgin and another Sprint MNVO I can't remember atm) and then have it working on their network. The difference here is we would need the part of the software that handles the automatic switch from wifi to phone calling. Is it some modified voip software? I have wifi calling on my ET4G with Grooveip or Talkatone but they both have lag. Unusable.

This is not the Epic Touch forum. You might want to ask there.

Well I'm still curious if anyone has done this with an epic 4G then. Whatever progress is made with that phone, I could apply to mine.

Evo On Boost

Is there any I can use evo with boost mobile. I know a lot of people question this, but please. Prepaid is the only way I can have a phone. Thanks
nope sorry
Have you tried going into a boost mobile store (authorized retailer only, not corporate) and asking them to activate the phone on their network? You will NOT be able to purchase one from a sprint store unactivated and bring it to boost. You will not have 4G service, if you do a lot of people are going to try this and it will get fixed, so dont tell anyone if you do (except me).
A boost authorized retailer would love to do this for you because then he can pocket the normal subsidy on the phone which would be sold to you. Call a few authorized retailers and ask them to do this they should know how and be very willing.
boost is owned by sprint they would not allow evo on boost network
The easiest way to get a sprint phone working on BOOST isn't by calling them its getting a BOOST CDMA phone and activating an account or switching your Iden account to the new CDMA phone. Once you have that done you need to have the MSL code for your SPRINT phone and just reprogram it using your MDN which is your BOOST cell# and the MSID thats given to you by BOOST when you activate your phone. Once thats done the phone resets itself and your done, I did this myself and have had my Touch Pro2 working great since Feb. As far as the EVO i want to get it too so it should be the same with the exception of 4G which isnt even available in certain areas like here in NYC yet anyway but everything would be workiing norally in 3G and being that SPRINT owns BOOST i sure they'll be getting 4G really soon. Motorola already has an Iden android phone for BOOST so newer phones and way better service should be comming along too. I had my phone with SPRINT and now that im using BOOST i have the same service with a way better plan and for much less. So if i have to pay BOOST an extra $10 when they get 4G then so be it and i'll have a better plan with the same service instead of paying SPRINT at least $100/month with taxes&fees. Only disadvantage BOOST has is they dont offer a equipment protection plan other than that its much more economical

One sold on ebay for ~USD$1200
The only way to do it I know of is to change the MEID to one Boost would except.

Flashed EVO on Boost
my Evo is flashed to boost but my phone keeps getting a Data call error 67 when i try to update my phones data profile and PRL my phone also send calls striaght to voice mail when my mobile data connection is enabled Does anyone know how to fix this?
I imagine it won't grab the update/prl since it wants to get it from Sprint, but you are running Boost. When you are using data, all calls will go to Voice Mail, since CDMA doesn't currently support voice/data simutaneously. You can try to uncheck DDTM mode, this will interrupt data and push the phone call through. It will disconnect your data connection and resume it after terminating the call, however if you were downloading or doing something else, it won't automatically resume the download.
Menu---> Settings---> Call---> DDT Mode (uncheck box).
My phone doesn't have full data connection my phone wont stay on the internet when i receive a call and when my wifi is on my 3g connection gets disabled how do i fix this? does anyone know how to fully flash the EVO to run off sprint 3g too?

So wait.
You are complaining about the phone doing EXACTLY WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO?
You did do at least SOME research before buying this particular phone, correct?
And what do you mean "flash the EVO to run off sprint 3G?"
That's what it does stock!

Actually thats not what the phones suppose to do cause i know there's a number of people that actually got their EVO's to act like a smart phone on boost and not disconnect their data when calling. Did you do your research? i was actually hoping that someone who knew how to fix the problem would respond rather than someone with just a mere comment that says nothing.

Not possible.
There exists no CDMA service in North America that allows simultaneous DATA and voice.
In theory if you had a good 3g connection and was doing VOIP it could look like you were doing both

How to Surf and Talk on EVO 4G

Hi Guys I'm starting this thread hoping somebody out there knows how to do this or please point me in the right direction. I know it is possible to talk on the EVO and Surf in 3G at the same time. I know this can be done on 4G. The reason why I said it can be done I have a friend that has a Sprint Palm Pre they told me they can do this without being on WiFi. If we can figure this out video Calling will go alot smoother and better by using Knocking Video. If we can pull this off calling the other person on EVO or even the IPhone using Knocking video your voice would be channel through the 1x while the video without voice traveling through 3G and 4G for those who has it is. Now this is how its done overseas out of the USA every phone comes with two camera we are the ones behind. Now I know its a setting in the ##DATA# that has been disable or turned off. My thoughts are that Sprint either turned it off and not allowing this to be done yet "why" to promote 4G. Now Voice and Video consumes alot of data from both Parties Knocking Video do not as of yet have audio so therefore if we can Somehow turn this on calling your party puting them on speaker or Bluetooth video will go alot smoother. AT&T has this option where they can talk and surf but they have Face time only on WiFi. thank you guys for taking time and reading this post hope we can figure this out. I have Faith in you guys. Thanks for your hard work all of you..

I was completely deceived by the Title.
Perhaps you should have edited your Title to say "Can you use Data and Voice at the same time on Sprint?".
Your friend lied.. It can't be done..

Wrong forum. This should be in q&a. But to reiterate, with CDMA this is impossible. The network is not made for this.

Connect to Wifi or 4G. Those are your only options.
Yes you can do this but you have to be on 4G. As the others said, its not a setting you can just tweak. Sprints nor Verizons network support this on 3G.
I used to do it all the time from my Touch Diamond on Sprint - routinely, actually.
I was surprised when I couldn't do it on my Evo 4G, but eh - it wasn't that big of a deal.
your friend with a pre is a liar, I've got a pre sitting on my coffee table that can attest to it if you want
I remember being able to do this on my Mogul thought....
It is not physically possible for any CDMA phone to do this, I have no idea why you would think anything but. Using WiFi or 4G you can, but otherwise you can't.
3G is plenty for video calling anyways, voice/video run about 1Mb/sec according to fring.

nope. It's just like when you get a call or text message, anything you were doing on the net is paused. I would routinely tether to my laptop and stream netflix. A call stops that in its tracks.

Those of you saying you were able to do it with your previous phone... You're not recalling it correctly. It cannot be done. You cannot surf and talk at the same time, with EV-DO, period.
It's impossible and there is absolutely no proof that this was ever possible.
Like other people said, this is a limitation of the EV-DO technology. So unless your windows mobile handset was so slow to the point that it was showing you delayed data during a phone call , it is simply impossible.

Yes but that's one way calling and 3g for sprint is 1.something so it will be choppy. Pocketnow did a test on the iPhone tethering sprint phone with the iPhone face time and it was choppy only At&t stood up to smooth video calling. See we can send text while talking and text is data yes it is data. Before we couldn't send text while talking. And on the pre some phone where able to do this some wasn't due the the update. I'm thinking it was a test sprint was doing. Early or mid last yeah cmda purchase the technology for this to happen Its all a money thing in USA think about it. See sprint charging. Us extra $10 for this phone and future phones. I believe its a setting somewhere on this phone. Because you can turn. Receive text off while on a call and send to voicemail I was thinking somebody out there would know more about the ##data# settings. Than I do please help in anyway

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE! I don't know why you can't understand this. You might have been able to use the browser while on the phone if the page was CACHED, but 100% there is no CDMA phone that can browse and talk at the same time without being on 4G or connected to Wi-Fi.
Also, SMS is NOT data - it goes over the voice network.
To those who have done it previously with Windows Mobile phones, It was because you were connected to ActiveSync sharing your computer's internet connection, not surfing and talking on 3G at the same time. It is impossible, as it is a limitation of the CDMA technology used. Different EV-DO/EV-DV Revisions could have made this possible. However, neither Verizon nor Sprint took advantage.

Agreed with this response 100%. Simultaneous data/voice is a technical limitation of cdma/EV-DO and no amount of software hacks/settings/whatever can change that.

Leaving sprint, want to keep my E4GT, what are my options?

Sprint has sent me a termination letter for excessive roaming and cutting me off July 3. This is probably for the best because my new job has 0 sprint coverage (deep inside a building) and i've been roaming on verizon for the last 2 months while at work. Anyway, I do love my epic 4g touch and while there are other phones that are now "superior" I'd prefer to keep it if possible.
So my quesiton is:
What other providers can I use with an E4GT, and how much work does it take to switch? (Flashing, odin, etc). And also, what would I lose in terms of 4g/3g/MMS, etc I'd prefer prepaid services like boost or cricket but of course, I don't know if they have coverage where I work but having all options on the table would be helpful!
Thanks in advance XDA!
I think it can be flashed to metro pcs, boost mobile, and virgin mobile. There's a couple threads around here giving you exact instructions in how to do so so check those out. I believe you'll lose 4g except with metro and everyhing else should be good.

Virgin Mobile is launching their 4G WiMax service at the end of the month. Something to look into.
Page Plus (VZW) is really your only option as the rest of the MVNO's listed here are Sprint. So same/no service.
Best off selling it and getting a new phone honestly.

You can flash it to anything cdma. You would need a donor phone though. you would most likely only lose wimax.

Ok time to give it to you raw..... (No Homo!) This is what you need to do my friend, go to google type in prepaid services and your zip code. See what pops up for your area then make some phone calls to them and ask them about their service in your area. Secondly you can then go to all of their respective sites and check out the deals. You may find like mentioned that selling the phone and purchasing lets say a T-mobile branded Galaxy 2 and using Simple Mobile may work better for you.
I understand trying to ask your fellow members but honestly what we are going to tell you I am sure you already know. Lastly, check with others in your area and see if one of the other big 3 work extremely well in your area that you desire the coverage and then check out their prepaid services
T-Mobile - Simple
AT&T - H2O
Verizon - Page Plus
Sell your phone for $250 purchase another Galaxy 2 for around $300 or work a trade out with someone.... Time to do some homework my friend... Get close with Google...
Happy searching!
if u get good boostmobile covarage in ur area then flash it to boostmobile
So it seems the only cdma carriers that use/resell verizon are pageplus and of course, verizion. Can an epic 4g touch be flashed to either of those?
I currently have my epic 4g touch flashed to straight talk 45 unlimited on Verizon coverage way better than sprint faster data far as 3g goes around 1.5mb a sec and signal is awesome

Awesome! How hard was it to flash it to straight talk? Any links would be helpful! I've never done a flash to another carrier so i'm not sure how hard it is exactly. So so far to get verizon coverage I can use:
Verizon resellers that work on an epic 4g touch (flashed):
Page Plus
Verizon Prepaid
Straight Talk
Sprint resellers
Boost Mobile
Cricket
US cellular?
MetroPCS
Virgin Mobile
If any of that is wrong let me know.
I flashed mine to Page Plus. Followed this guide, talk text and data work, but I am still working on removing the hidden Sprint APN settings to get MMS working.
It might seem a little intimidating, but it was pretty easy.

If you dont have a donor phone thats ok, but dont expect to get full 3G speeds without it. If you use the vzw password, you get 1x data. At least I am not getting raped on the monthly fee, so I can save up for the S3 and will probably move to straight talk.

question is, if he had to roam at work because Sprint obviously did not have tower close enough, then wouldn't Boost be a waste of time because you can't roam with boost, or virgin mobile for that matter, meaning he would just not have service where he works.

Thanks for that link, its awesome. I will likely go the page plus route though after googling the new phones im on the fence now, lol. The Galaxy note may be coming to t-mo as is the SIII. I don't want to spend $700 on a new phone, but if I can get $275 for my E4GT i'd be willing to pay maybe $500 and just eat the difference. I have until about June 20 to make my decision. At this point it'll either be new phone or page plus / straight talk flashed E4GT. I am pretty sure sprint doesn't set my ESN to bad on my epic just because they are booting me. If they do I'll be pretty irate.
if 4g is available in your area you can purchase a modem for it (clear wire, time Warner, net zero, etc) and use its MAC addy on your et4g as to still have 4g, I'll edit my post when I'm on my laptop to link to the thread with instructions to do that....

Letter of death workaround...
Have the same issue, you may want to try and port to Google Voice, terminate your Sprint account this will automatically happen once a port takes hold of the account number. Let the account terminate; start a new line of service from one of the big three or back to yellow shortly after. If you love the E4GT, go back to yellow the next cycle with a new bis/indiv. account and port your number back. Not happy or locked into the contract just prl flash back to the reason you most likely got terminated and then go over to big red when the SIII is released. Done and done... you'll keep the same phone if on yellow with little loss, and no ETF...
Can you explain what you are saying more for me? im getting kicked off due to a roaming issue on the 18th (tomorrow) and this is my business number so i need to keep it, however the 2nd line is fine on yellow which doesnt make any sence since its a business share plan so they told me that i can keep the 2nd line but will need to go to another carrier with the primary, dont care for limits on data so verizon seems like my only option but are you saying to take the number back to yellow after switching to another? cause they told me i could try after the new carriers 2 year contract but cant gaurentee ,,,but i thinkk that might have been a wink wink in the conversation from the yellow lady. i wouldnt mind switching to ver. prepay with my E4gt just to keep things smooth for now so if anything can you point me to a thread to do this (preferably wo a donor but i do have an old verizon prepay, its the one that flips both regular and landscape style, so would this one work as a donor, it has been activated before tho....thanks

[Q] Data while on phone?

This is something I just discovered the other day and it kinda bugged me out cause as far as I knew data while on voice wasn't possible on CDMA.. But I was inside a cafe getting lunch, and while on the phone I had to look up something on ticketmaster and was amazed that I was actually able to surf the web while on the phone. I have had blackberries, WM phones and an Evo prior to this and it was never possible (unless on wifi) I'm in NYC so there is no LTE available yet.. Has anyone who is in a non-LTE market able to do this?
I've seen this mentioned before by some others. Here's a link to one such thread.

Thanks! When I saw this I kissed my phone, LOL.. But really this is why this phone is so damn amazing.. It makes it so much easier to quickly look something up then to have to say "lemme look this up real quick I'm gonna call you back".
Yep it's great isn't it. The newer phones on Sprint or at least Galaxy 3 and Evo LTE are svdo capable aka simultaneous voice and data. Thank God cdma networks can now do this (Sprint, Verizon) as the gsm networks (TMobile, and AT&T) have been able to do this for a long time.

Yup! And don't forget the LG Viper it was the first LTE phone to bring the feature. Kinda messed up the Galaxy Nexus is the only LTE phone that don't support it.
yeah, I found this out today and I about screamed out of joy!. I was downloading G Maps and had to call my wife, so I called her and realized the 3G icon didn't go away, like it does on the Epic 4G (my last phone). And I had to tell my wife "hold on" and went back to my notifications and realizeed GMaps was still downloading. What a great feature on a CDMA phone. One more reason to love my GSIII I wish i could find out who thought of this, so I could buy him/her a beer. Peace!
i never even paid attention... usually the only time im using data while on the phone is at home with wifi or occasionally when im on 4g which of course is not cdma... never new this feature was implemented... good to know gsm no longer has the one up on us...
Does this chipset use a different 3G technology?
I remember when the Thunderbolt came out for Verizon everyone was amazed that it could do this and the reason was Verizon/Thunderbolt's Chipset was using some different type of EVDO revision that allowed it to work or something. Maybe I'm wrong on the technical details lol, but the general idea is right.....

Wifi Calling With AT&T on N900-T Unlocked...Possible or not?

As I have experienced first hand, T-Mobile's wifi calling feature works amazing on my Note 3. The problem is, where I live, work and play we do not get any T-Mobile service above 2g, and mostly nothing at all. I'm actually confused as to why local stores are even selling the service. It simply doesn't work here. Anyhow, I had purchased a month of prepaid service with them because I don't get ANY service from any provider at my home (except Verizon, who comes in at 5 bars in my basement). The wifi calling feature was amazing for this one reason. I never missed a call, or text and life was good. Of course, the moment I left the house my $800.00 Note 3 turned into a very expensive makeup mirror for my wife because, like I mentioned, we don't get T-Mobile here, at all. I still have 2 weeks of the service active, and put the sim into my i-747 S3 for testing.
I'm currently running Hyperdrive RLS3.1 (NB4) on AT&T Go-Service on my Note 3.
What I'm asking is simple, or maybe it isn't -
I would like to know where I could find info on a REAL wifi calling service. Not these 3rd party apps that give you a new free #, etc. I'd like something that integrates into the phone, like TM Wifi calling does. After searching this topic on XDA, I found a few threads on SIP VoIP. I'd even be willing to give that a shot. If I have to invest a few dollars, that is also ok. Has anyone else successfully done this? Any better idea's or suggestions? I'm tired of not being able to make calls from my cell phone at home. I have looked into repeaters, extenders, etc, but that is for another thread, I suppose.
I know that the native wifi calling on my Note 3 will not work with AT&T, but there must be something that can work....
Thanks for any info or help anyone can provide.
Real WiFi calling has to be supported on the back end by the carrier.
You are going to be limited to a 3rd party solution.
That's what I use. I have to use magic jack.

I also started using magicjack on my phone. After trying out several voip SIP services with the native android app, I realized that it would never have the sound quality I needed.
This is all null and void now though. I retired my N900T and bought the Verizon Note 3 and never drop signal or lose LTE, even in my basement.
100% not possible. It relies on servers at T-Mobile's end. Plus the settings in the Wifi Calling app are set to T-Mobile's servers on top of that.
