[Q] Best wired Tethering app? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, Im lazy, My laptop is fine. But I have two desktops. One is hardwired into the router but the other one is to far away for my liking and im too cheap to buy a wireless card for it. I am going to use my Incredible to tether. Just wanted to know what apps are out there (easytether, pdaNET, etc.) I know before 2.2 There was a way to fool the Mobile broadband Connect to connect but not have to pay for it. But I have forgot how to do it. pdaNEt works but like I said im cheap. I need to connect to https for certain reasons. not to mention that I have a server that I have to take care of with that computer. So what does everybody think?

here you go, stop being cheap lol

But what if, say, you need to get the interwebs onto a computer with no wireless card? For a machine that isn't yours. Like a school computer.
I'd really like to have this as well.
My engineering team has powerful computers (like, powerful as ****) but the building has no internet. And so, things cannot be researched or ordered on the spot. It's a major inconvenience.
Although that's a nice alternative, I don't think that's what he's asking for.

Your school is foolish enough to give you admin rights on their computers?!?!

Psh, our school doesn't even let us right-click.
But our engineering computers on the other hand.... THOSE we have total control over.

Any updates on hdmi out?

Sorry if this has been addressed but I searched and have not seen any updates in days, and those were just interested people no developers. Have all the developers given on this? Very disappointed here.

What are you asking about it?
I have fresh rom and hdmi out works great, just wish there was a way to see the whole thing instead of just pics/movies.
last year I had the htc omnia with windowsmobile and could connect it to tv with av cables and see whole system on tv, it was only cool feature about it....lol
Sorry for not specifying, I meant full external monitor support. I bought a bluetooth keyboard and mouse specifically for this purpose and feel completely ripped off. Thought one of the devs would have a solution a week after the phone came out but no one seems to care at all

I'm pretty excited about this too. Hopefully it will happen eventually.

Not to sound disheartening or anything, but I just don't think there is that much of a demand for this.
I am sure that one of the devs will get it going sometime though, just might be a while.
I think if the demand's not there, it's only because people haven't thought much about the possibilities. I'm thinking of a future where you don't own a desktop computer. Instead, you come home from work, drop your phone into a cradle that charges the phone and makes a video connection to a monitor. The phone then pairs with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse literally becoming a computer and when you leave for work the next morning you take your computer with you as a phone.
Granted, the Evo is a little short on specs to be a main computer for most (it's probably about equal to a '02 Compaq Presario 5400) but I expect the performance will improve dramatically in future models considering some of the tech that's rumored to be on the horizon. I'd really like to see it happen with the Evo just to show the possibilities if nothing else. Besides, with the bluetooth changes in CM6 allowing the use of input devices, we're halfway there. Just need to get that pesky video out problem solved.

You & I buddy, we see things the same way.
Maybe we should take a poll of the community to gague interest on who might actually use this feature if the dev's got it working.
Personally I would love to see this technology paired with a USB HOST driver so that we can dock our EVO's into something and actually energize not only the monitor but also be connected to anything tethered to the dock via USB. (keyb/mouse mainly, but also storage!)
I hope you don't feel 'ripped off' by the development community who seems to give 110% almost all the time, and instead feel 'ripped off' by HTC not providing this type of functionality out of the gate, which in my mind would TOTALLY be a game changer.
Anyhow, you're not alone, it just seems we've got no developer to champion our cause just yet, or if we do, i'm not aware.
--- Now, I know it's not gonna help us with the EVO/HDMI interaction we're thinking about here but i'm personally hoping that by the time Intel's LightPeak lands in cell phones that manufacturers start to grasp this "cellphone centric" world view that we have.

USB host is a great idea. Not only for input devices and storage but also optical drives, scanners, and printers. Imagine ripping a DVD to mp4 for your phone using your phone (while docked). Of course the apps would have to be there to support those devices, but surely they would follow. Right now I'd be extremely happy just to see the basic groundwork in place (which it is excepting full UI out over hdmi). As to feeling ripped off, a few months ago I wouldn't have even thought it possible that a phone could do this. I don't feel ripped off a bit, definitely not by the development community, not even by HTC really. If anything I'm just really excited by the possibilities and willing to lend my voice to express support/interest so that hopefully the devs won't overlook this as something nobody's interested in.

What do you mean see the whole thing? Please elaborate for those of us who have yet to buy an hdmi cable.
I thought it would simply go into "mirror" mode, so whatever you see on your evo is mirrored on the TV, like how desktops work. Is that not the case?

Its not that no one cares, its that it is going to RIDICULOUSLY HARD to get full HDMI out on the EVO. I've looked into it a fair amount with the intent of coming out with an app similar to Real HDMI for the EVO. The trick for getting full HDMI out for the Droid X won't work at all for EVO due to the way HTC (and possibly Sprint) have the software stack configured for HDMI output. Long story short, it will take a dev with massive experience/knowledge to get this working since it will require a hack at the kernel/ROM level as it looks impossible to get it working at the app layer.

Yeah I guess it is just my ignorance showing through, or maybe I just had my hopes too high. The attitude around here seems to be that our friends here will find a solution to any problem they throw at us, and I may have taken a little too much stock in that. Its not so much that I am saddened by the lack of success, it is just that with lots of searching, I can't seem to find one prominent developer working on this (barely mentioning it). I suppose I am just being a cry baby, but it is just a bummer when I look at the changelogs on roms/kernels, and I see some of the issues they spend their time working on vice things like this. I suppose if CyanogenMod didnt have to be elbow deep in WIMAX (the only other remaining feature I am dying for) this might be a different story. /Cry over
@timmymacnj: You could also post on HTC's facebook page and write to them as well. After all, if the Droid X can do it, then that's a feature that makes the Droid X better than the Evo.

The industry as a whole is very short sighted. I use a Clarion Mind running XP SP3 as my carpc (800Mhz Atom, 512MB Ram) with no issues. Smart phones now are not to far off in specs. I've been waiting for some time for a "workstation in my pocket" type solution.
The EVO hardware supports "USB Host", HDMI (or DVI w/ an adapter), Bluetooth, WiFi, and others. All we need is USB Host (w/ HID ,mass storage, USB hub and LAN dongle support), full UI out via HDMI and bluetooth HID support. I have drawings for a dock on my workbench that has 2 usb ports, 10/100 port, 2.5" HD and DVI out. Throw in an office suite and a couple other apps and you end up with that "workstation in your pocket". Have the phone manufacturers charge $150 for it and buyers would still save money over an EVO plus netbook combo. There are a lot of companies that would benefit by giving their employees laptops but can't afford, this is an answer to that problem.
Real innovation is generally left to devs and hardware geeks. Then a couple years later the manufacturers say "Look at our cool new thingy aren't we the smart ones!"

When you say that smartphones today aren't too far off in spec from your Car PC, the EVO actually bests it (unless I'm missing something)!
Seriously. Talk about Eating Microsoft's lunch!
I'm glad to hear that i'm not living on a planet all by my lonesome wanting this to come true. I know it's a mountain and a half of work but at this point, it makes me sad to think.
"It really is just software"
I feel like I missed my calling when I could have learned how to code that software but chose another path instead.
Does anyone have any connections to dev's who have thought about tackling this? Specifically might the mountain be made into a little more like a large hill if we could apply some of the HDMI code base from something like the DROID X and apply it to the EVO? Is this just too much wishful thinking?
So, the FM radio is now working in CM nightly 116. I expect that means 4G will be coming at some point in the not too distant future and hopefully with those out of the way we'll see HDMI out getting some attention. I remember reading some articles back in July saying that full HDMI out was going to be a feature in CM6. Obviously that didn't happen, but hopefully it was just postponed and not abandoned. If full HDMI does make an appearance on the Evo, I expect that a later CM rom is where we'll see it first.
I believe a lot more people would be running CM ROMs if that happens...

ClubMz's Extreme Cell Phone Spy Gear 2010 Platinum???

Ok, so my wife claims to have installed ClubMz's Extreme Cell Phone Spy Gear 2010 Platinum on her laptop and cell. She claims to have been watching me for the last 5 months. I know I havent done anything wrong but find this creepy. I'd rather save the fight and not get upset or call her a crazy %$^ch. Is this legit? And how can I block her from spying on me? lol
looking at their website i would say it's not going to be very reliable software.
i've always found that if they need flashy graphics and they SCREAM at you what they do, it's probably crap.
here's a better question. if your wife is saying she has it on her laptop...why not look at her laptop and see what it does/doesn't do?
Use your own laptop and phone?
EDIT: So wait, how does this even work? Do both devices need Bluetooth enabled to get the data or what? And it doesn't look like you put it on your computer, so I'm not sure what she means by that. Looks to me like you'll have to have Bluetooth enabled on your phone and be close enough to hers for it to get the data. I wonder if just turning it off on your end will hinder her efforts.

I think you're right. It may only install on the laptop then you transfer it somehow to your phone. From what I read, it does require bt. But mine is always off. Did it only require bt to be enabled to install some hidden spyware on my phone? Maybe she turned bt on my phone while I was sleeping to get what she needed? I have no clue.

[Q] anyone with a galaxy nexus + apple computer

i saw a video review and the guy mentioned bluetooth tethering is an option and i am HYPED on that, it's the thing i miss most from old school windows mobile. can anyone with a galaxy nexus and an apple computer confirm whether or not tethering over bluetooth is possible on an apple? thanks so much, and please know i'm insanely jealous of you over here in the states until they get here! lol
bump.
eric b
You can bluetooth tether. Its just very finicky in my experiences (you could bluetooth tether with apps on 2.3). You have to make a bluetooth DUN network profile, pair the devices, and set it up. Similar to what you have to do in order to USB tether.
It ended up being so much trouble that I just wifi tethered. Its faster anyways (setup and network speeds).
Any specific reason you'd prefer bluetooth tether?
thanks for replying!
yeah, it always seemed to be much easier on the battery when i used it on windows mobile. the bottleneck of bluetooth never bothered me too much when i tethered before. i never got usb tethering to work on my apple notebook before, is it possible using the native tethering method or do i need something like pdanet?

It will work with the built-in USB tethering option. All of the hackery needs to happen on the computer side. It takes some interesting steps and a lot of setup to get it to work. There are lots of guides online though.

My Macbook has been nothing but great for college no slow starts, its there when you require it, will not freeze or let you down when you most need it. Theres less malware viruses ect for it so you feel a little more secure. Apple support is a plus this guys will fix any problem you have within warranty and aslong as you did not brake anything on purpose. Besides you can install virtual machine and run windows 8, xp, vista ect its like you have two computers in one.

Or you could build a hackintosh for home. Sandybridge has made building and using one with lion a piece of cake. Under 300 bucks for a nice mac mini performance machine. It's funny how people won't admit to owning any apple products in these threads for fear of being pounced on. At least this section seems better than most.

I work in IT and use them all the time. Actually fixing one right now. And from an IT stand point Macs are no good for buis. And you can run multiple OS's on any PC. That is not a Mac thing they just advertise it because they know you will need windows for something
Once you go MAC you don't go back to "PC"
been in IT since 1982.. been on MAC at my home office for 4 years now. I have 6 laptops of my own and 4 MACS also. 2 mbp, 1 macro, and 1 new while unibody for daughter at college.. I have serviced all pc's from Southern Cali to Washington DC. I have yet to fully need to break down a mac any place ... only hard drives if that. When I repair PC'S laptops at Colleges its always a windows' machine. The reason I switched over was the virus issues with PCs and the constant WTF i need to update today before I start working on my PC. Sure they both have trojans and mail ware. But PC's have viruses and MAC's do not. Meaning PC's can be made inoperable by malicious software a lot more often were as MAC will be used as pons in a greater hacking plan with implanted trojans.... but still operate. Many times without the user ever knowing. Last reason .. economics... take a look at the income scale of MAC user's .. usually a lot higher than your typical PC user. By no means am I saying PC users don't make more money than MAC users.. just are usually in my field experience in a more lucrative high paying career position than a trade "job". Granted you defiantly have infinite more options of software and best of breed hardware options building PC's. If you want to do what you want how you want .. build your own PC box. If you want to power up and get to work on the reason you power'd up every time you power up with out having to restart our machine after using it for extended periods of time opening and closing apps.. going in and out of hibernation/sleep mode for days on end..... MAC is the way to go. .................... on last note.. the pc are great .. mac's are great... the internet is bases off UNIX not DOS. MAC is based off UNIX. If dos went away.. PC would rule hands down. truly its not the hardware man.. its the software that's the issue. I for all OS's merging closely into one within the next 20 years... each upgrade of windows it becomes more MAC. its just how it goes. even Ubuntu with its unity desktop is following suite as well. out of all the computers in my home only one 2 year old Sony has Windows 7 Ultimate on it to flash my GPS and Pimped out Epizzal 4G's Touch.. LOL.. everything else Runs on OS-X and UBUNTU... .. http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

Sorry PC's.. since I'm not a big PC gamer.... My switch has been a long time coming.. I wish they would start the IM A MAC / PC commercials again too funny.. but all of them true. LMAO.:highfive:
No it's not true because you're comparing computers with intel processors that are far superior to all its predecessors. I can do the exact things you stated with my Core i7-920 machine with no hiccups as well because the jump from Core 2 duo/quad to first gen i7s was 20% increase in performance on average. 2nd generation and 3rd generation are 10-20% better than the first gen nehelams (depending on task).
It does not matter if it's a PC or a Mac. You'll be hard pressed to make any modern CPU from Intel or AMD choke in any way unless you're doing the most demanding of tasks where intel completely dominates.
An updated windows 7 machine from a QUALITY manufacturer (not the cheap hp/dell stuff in retail stores) will last as long as any MBP. There is a reason the commercials stopped. It just didn't work anymore against the improvements in Win 7.
Also i live in the state capital of CA and have family with seniority positions within the gov't and let me tell you. Even though literally everyone has an Ipad...
Out of the thousands of computers, I did not ever encounter mac's in huge quantities. Only windows or custom OS's.
Side note #1 - MBP's use SSD's which allow for insanely fast response times.
#2 - They do get viruses / malware and are usually the fastest to be hacked in any hacking competition due to extensive security vulnerabilities that they take forever to patch which is also one of the main reasons the PCvMac commercials stopped when MS got its act together.

been in IT since 1982.. been on MAC at my home office for 4 years now.

Mac desktops are PCs... You know a personal computer. Just like Dells, HPs, Sony and the like. OSX is pretty but I'm not paying an arm and leg for a name brand. It's like Air Jordan sneakers. Every year its the same hing different colour higher price. Sometimes add some need giltz and glam.

Just bought both an MBA 13" 2012 edition and the Asus Zenbook UX31A. It's my first time using a Mac and I've been a pro-PC person all my life, but I can honestly say that the Air is better than the UX31A, which is the top Ultrabook out right now. The specs are pretty identical, but this is a lot more intuitive and they are basically the same price.
But since this thread is about Android phones, I'll say that I usually just run Parallels to Windows 7 for my Android stuff because I CBA figuring out how Heimdall works instead of Odin haha. Otherwise, I think it's basically the same. Macs are pretty good with automatically finding drivers.

Windows was never meant to be used with the internet

Mac & Android

So android and mac don't play well together. Apple doesn't allow mtp to work on mac and google have not updated their android file transfer app in ages and it's extremely buggy. What apps and methods you guys use to make your life easier? I have been using an app called handshaker, it's a decent app but still not as simple and solid as plugging your phone on windows.
Install windows using boot camp. Problem solved. Best of both worlds then.

I dont want to install windows as i have a macbook air with 128 gb ssd and dont want to waste 30 gigs on windows since i dont really need windows at all.
the main problem is neither apple nor google is concerned with this matter which kind of sucks. i know there's probably a very less number of people using androids and macs together but i'd still love to see some solid solution.
Yea! I've been living with this problem too! Handshaker is nice. But transfer speeds are damn slow.
Well after 20 years of using Macintosh and about 5 of using android, the only way to get things working properly to install windows. Either using boot camp or parallel desktop emulator. Those are the only two fool proof solutions sadly, like it or not.
I agree, android transfer is completely crap for Mac. Having to disconnect and reconnect all the time in order to get one out of three times it works.
It used to work fine on Sony Z1 using 5.1 but marshmallow seems to be the issue to me.

This is sad. I gave up my Mac 2 years ago after trying to get a replacement screen for a 2010 Mac book pro and they told me $400. Bought a touchscreen Dell on sale for same price, windows 10 free upgrade, better processor and RAM, SSD, etc... Apple has always made a sleek looking, good product, but their lack of support without shelling or a ton of cash is why i left their desktop/laptop products. Android is why I left their phone products. They will probably never make anything to work with an Android device unless you pay them. Strictly apples to apples (pun intended).
I do hope you find a solution, cause I was thinking about replacing my wife's I Mac with a newer one, but if I can't use it ever, I'm going to find another win 10 machine.

I just use "File Manager" from cheetah mobile, downloaded from play store. Turn on wifi transfer, type the IP it shows you into your browser or ftp client, transfer files at 10-100x the speed of mtp.
Of course, both devices need to be on the same wifi, which isnt a problem in most cases.
Im sure some other file managers out there have the same function.

yes exactly i too had a 2010 macbook pro and motherboard died. apple customer service asked to pay 36k inr ($500) usd to get the motherboard replaced. he told me apple doesnt allow them to repair motherboards and they have to replace them. i ended up getting a macbook air but even i've decided when my current mac dies i'll switch over to windows.

That is outrageous! And the unibody design was so easy to work on, seriously, 9 screws and you could do anything your self. The price I was quoted was for just the screen, the installation I was going to do myself. Unfortunately, at the time I was looking, there really weren't better prices floating around. I was finally lucky enough to find a decent priced screen just this year, resurrected my MBP and daughter is using for school.
One day people are finally going to realize everything they (apple) make is from China, costs them nothing to manufacture, then they markup like 400%. People complaining about the EPI-pen lady, but she just took a look at a business model and decided to copy it... I'm personally very happy to give my money to a company like one plus where they obviously markup the price, but just don't rip you off straight out the gate, and then make you pay out the nose if something goes wrong.
Haven't had a single issue with my old OnePlus one, which is also under the control of my daughter, and my three is phenomenal as well. Samsung is also another company I'll never give money to in the phone department. My brand new note 3 bezel broke after I put it in one of the "authorized" cases they had. Asked them to fix, and they tried to charge me a ton of money. But the Samsung TVs, wow, no one can compare, so they've got me hooked there.
After writing all this I guess I'm just becoming some sort of hippie or something. Just tired of the greedy companies taking advantage...

I agree with you. Companies like oneplus and xiaomi have proved that good products can be made and sold at resonable prices. Samsung is same as apple, they launched note 7 at 60k inr which is equal to 900 usd.

To each their own. Ive never had a single problem transferring files this way. On the other hand Ive had problems with plugging it in an using mtp, either with drivers or just how ridiculously slow it is.
The wifi method, theres no drivers involved, is about as fast as you can get regarding transfer speed, and I dont even have to get off my chair to find a cable.

I've used airdroid but i didnt really liked the apps interface, i tried a few others (dont remeber the name) apps like it. I'm really loving commander one, its simple and clean and since it supports mtp mode its as easy as it is in windows to tranfer your data.
